A waxing and waning discussion (punctuated by much 'clean and jerk' action) of this extraordinarily powerful feature of the cultural landscape. From impressionistic organ pieces and (yet more) French poetry through to the Norse myths and the vocal stylings of Cat Stevens, Chris and Maurice ponder what it is that makes the moon such a magnet for creativity. Anna Lapwood, if you are out there, please take the call. First recorded on 10th October 2024.
Battling metaphorical waves and showing metaphorical physical strength, Chris and Maurice swim the channel in this week's maritime themed episode. Covering the music of Debussy, the poetry of Baudelaire and Arnold, not to mention a discussion of the compositions of Hans Zimmer, the discussion looks at melancholy, restlessness and the enigmatic possibilities of the sea. We also name-drop Anna Lapwood for no good reason.

"I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have here accomplished, I will never achieve again." So said child prodigy, virtuoso pianist, intellectual, conductor and composer Camille Saint-Saëns about his wildly successful 1873 ‘Organ Symphony'. Famously featured in the 1995 porcine Disney film Babe, it's still immensely popular today. But where did it come from? What was Saint-Saëns trying to achieve and how influenced was he by his Parisian contemporaries? With organist Anna Lapwood on the thrill of playing ‘that chord' in the Royal Albert Hall at the BBC Proms. Producer: Ruth Thomson
Jess brings out the fizz and party poppers for a New Year's Eve listening party with the organist and conductor Anna Lapwood, as they introduce each other to their favourite music for this time of year. The award-winning social psychologist Dacher Keltner believes he's found the answer to happiness: finding awe. In his new book, Awe: The Transformative Power of Everyday Wonder, he shows how this elusive, but powerful, emotion can have physical and psychological effects, impacting our bodies and brains. Anna Lapwood is an organist and conductor, and currently the Director of Music at Pembroke College, Cambridge. She is also a great believer in the transformative power of music. She regularly plays the Royal Albert Hall's organ – described as ‘the voice of Jupiter' – and believes listeners can feel the wonder vibrating through the music. Looking up at the night sky and contemplating galaxies far away is often seen as a sure way to elicit wonder, but the physicist Felix Flicker argues that it can be found much smaller and much closer to home. In The Magick of Matter he shows how truly inspiring crystalline specks of dust can be, and when they're combined the sky's the limit. Anna Lapwood compares recordings of Benjamin Britten's Four Sea Interludes and picks a favourite. When Peter Grimes premiered in 1945 it immediately put Britten, uniquely among his compatriots, in the first rank of the world's opera composers. As well as the consummate solo vocal and choral writing, the orchestra, too, plays a vital role in Britten's dark drama of alienation and hypocrisy in a small Suffolk fishing community. Several purely orchestral episodes sometimes punctuate, sometimes push forward the narrative and four of these were published separately as the Sea Interludes. Much performed and recorded, Britten's dazzling orchestration vividly conjures up Dawn, Sunday Morning, Moonlight and a Storm.

In the spring of 1942, Benjamin Britten and his partner Peter Pears left the United States on board a Swedish cargo ship to cross the perilous waters of the North Atlantic. On a stopover in Nova Scotia, Britten picked up a book of medieval poems and whilst the ship navigated ferocious winds and dodged U boats, he used some of them in the first draft of what was to become 'A Ceremony of Carols'. From the confines of a miserable and airless cabin he created a work of such joy and energy that it has become a Christmas staple for the high clear voices of boy trebles - or women's choir - and harp. To discuss the enduring appeal of the music and the spiritual meaning of 'A Ceremony of Carols', Ernie Rea is joined by a distinguished trio of musicians. Michael Berkeley is a composer, broadcaster, and crossbench peer. Benjamin Britten was his godfather. Anna Lapwood is a conductor, organist and Director of Music at Pembroke College, Cambridge. She was a professional harp player. And the Rev Lucy Winkett is Rector of St James Piccadilly in the centre of London. Before becoming a priest, she trained as a singer at the Royal College of Music. Producer: Helen Lee

This week's guest is one Britain's most talented young organists Anna Lapwood. Anna joins me to chat about two great organ traditions, the music of J.S. Bach and the world of French Symphonic Organ and also about how she's reinventing the Organ with both the repertoire she's chosen for her new CD and her projects in the Organ community.
On this week's Gramophone Podcast, Editor Martin Cullingford spoke to Anna Lapwood, Director of Music at Pembroke College, Cambridge. They discuss what life is like for the college's choirs - both the Chapel Choir, and the Girls' Choir which Lapwood founded in 2018 - and explore their beautiful new album released on Signum Classics, 'All Things Are Quite Silent'.
Tom Service takes on the largest instrument created by human hands: the organ. With the help of organist Anna Lapwood, Tom asks: what makes the organ so mighty? Why has it fascinated musicians from Bach to Procol Harum? Along the way, Tom will delve into the Delphian roots of the organ and we'll hear what its ancestor the Hydraulis sounded like, created in ancient Egypt. And we'll drop in on Madison Square Garden where Gladys Gooding entertained huge audiences at sports events for over thirty years, starting in the 1930s. Finally, we'll hear what makes the organ timeless and immortal in music by John Cage and Olivier Messiaen. All hail: the organ!
Anna Lapwood talks to Alex about classical music by living composers. Anna and Alex discuss music by Owain Park, Ben Ponniah, and Caroline Shaw.Subscribe to New Notes on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts and you'll be the first to hear new episodes each week.
