One of the most exciting transport projects anywhere in the UK is the South Wales Metro which is now fully taking shape and promises to transform travel in and around the Cardiff Capital Region. In an extended interview, Christian hears from the person widely acknowledged as the visionary behind this metamorphosis - Mark Barry, Professor of Practice in Connectivity at Cardiff University - about the commitment and determination needed from him and many others to reach this point as well as lessons which can be applied elsewhere in Wales and the wider UK [1:40]. In his final thought from the departure lounge, Christian questions whether tougher punishments for reckless cyclists really should be a priority for legislation [31:30]. In recent years transport - and especially rail infrastructure - has been among the most hotly debated policy fields in Welsh politics. Following the disastrous franchise awarded to Arriva Trains Wales, the creation and subsequent nationalisation of the rail operator under Transport for Wales, longstanding under-investment in the network, and the infamous decision to decline full devolution of rail in the 2000s - one that has seen Wales miss out on hundreds of millions, if not billions of pounds from the UK Treasury in the years since - we are finally seeing some of the Welsh Government's investment paying off. So we're delighted to be joined by Professor Mark Barry to discuss his own contribution as the instigator and campaigner for the South Wales Metro and core valley lines electrification, as well as his recent book on the matter. We also discuss the 'missing billions' from the HS2 project, the ongoing injustice of the UK Government's refusal to devolve rail in Wales as it is in Scotland, the debate around building Cardiff Parkway station, and the Welsh Government's plans for reforming bus services in Wales. In the sixth episode of our series Wales: A Work in Progress, the IWA's Policy and External Affairs Manager Joe Rossiter talks to Professor Mark Barry about the future of Wales' transport networks. Wales: A Work in Progress is the companion piece of our project on the constitutional future of Wales supported by the Legal Education Foundation. In this series, we explore options for Wales' future in conversation with experts and people interested in shaping the way forward for our country. In keeping with the IWA's independence, we don't take position - rather, we want to give voice to different options and examine the evidence to understand what the best path might be for Wales, and why. Welcome painter Mark Barry to In-Focus Podcast Number 90. Mark paints ordinary things, things that he's discovered aren't so ordinary at all. As he relates, “In a world that often seems to be twisting, turning and chaotic, to capture just a second in time or a fleeting glimpse of motion in a painting allows for a semblance of stability. Figures in a landscape, working in a garden, sailing a boat or an interior scene of a family at dinner, in each painting I try to make the connections between the human forms and the environment.” Whether it's through his emphatic use of color or line, the exaggeration of an arm, a facial expression or a gently curving road, guiding a cyclist through a country landscape, each element of a painting is connected. This week on What's the Story we take a little trip to one of Ireland's most famous places, Carrigstown, as we get an inside look at a basketball rivalry that makes The Chicago Bulls v The New York Knicks look like a tea party. The Ballybrack Bulls v The Carrigstown Condors. We're joined by RTE's Fair City star Steve Gunn (Dan Keating of The Condors) who tells us about life on both sides of the camera and his days before landing his gig with the award winning serial drama. From taxi driving to busking, selling cash registers to working in a German circus, there's not a lot Steve hasn't tried - including tap dancing. We also had Irish Wheelchair Association Sport Development Officer, Mark Barry, along with us to tell us about the storyline on Fair City which involves Steve and of course our very own Graham Merrigan. Mark dishes the dirt on Mero and also tells us about his own journey from competing at the Barcelona 92 Paralympic Games to going on a J1 to Alaska and everything in between. As usual the lads discuss everything and anything including smelly Glasgow Celtic fans, the Rugby World Cup, Robert Durst The Jinx and loads more besides. As always rate, review, subscribe and let us know what you think! You can check out all our previous chapters on iTunes or any podcast app for android, just search WTSpod.
