Artown Festival este cel mai mare festival de artă murală din România, un manifest urban și social pentru o lume diferită, plină de viață și culoare în organismul urban. Anul acesta, între 4-20 Octombrie, a 3-a ediție de la Ploiesti, aduce peste 100 de artiști invitați, peste 30 de evenimente în spațiul public, sculpturi, un pavilion arhitectural și multe altele. O discuție despre Artown, unul dintre proiectele Asociației buchARTest, fondată în 2019 de Livia Florea. În perioada 4-20 Octombrie 2024, Ploiești devine scena unor intervenții artistice care depășesc formele obișnuite ale realității: Artown Festival este de data aceasta un simplu punct de plecare din realitate, având ca temă *suprarealismul*. Anul 2024 marchează centenarul suprarealismului, celebrând acest curent artistic revoluționar care a transformat percepția asupra realității și rolul imaginației în artă și literatură.O invitație deschisă la transformarea realității prin fragmentare vizuală, dar și la nivel conceptual, ediția a III-a aduce peste 15 picturi murale, peste 60 intervenții de street art care vor prinde viață pe străzile orașului, un circuit de sculpturi, remodelarea spațiilor verzi, evenimente în spațiul public și o nouă direcție ce constă în instalarea temporară a unui pavilion arhitectural, însumând direcția festivalului de activism artistic, toate concepute pentru a stimula experimentarea: de la basorelief și paste-up la sticker și colaj.Ploiești este Capitala Tineretului din România anul acesta, astfel că Artown Festival aduce în prim plan o nouă categorie, NextGen murals, adresată muraliștilor emergenți. Artiștii selectați vor participa la transformarea spațiului public și vor învăța din culisele festivalului despre accesul la spațiul de lucru, perfecționarea tehnicilor, constrângerile administrative sau legate de timp, dar și despre necesitatea construirii unui portofoliu și stabilirea unei identități artistice bazată pe colaborare și feedback.Pentru că arta nu necesită un spațiu anume, și fiindcă ne place să o avem atât indoor, cât și outdoor, lucrările vor putea fi descoperite în cele mai diverse spații: de la calcanele clădirilor la interioare surprinzătoare, iar asta pentru că suprarealismul vine cu posibilități infinite. Artown Festival nu este doar despre artă; este despre comunitate, colaborare și asumare creativă. Break 1: Peggy Slappy STORY 1: Man laid to rest 80 years after his death in World War II First Lt. Edward T. McGuire, a World War II pilot who died in 1943 when his B-24 Liberator bomber crashed near Ploiesti, Romania, during Operation Tidal Wave, was honored with a military funeral 80 years after his death. The recovery of his remains in 2017 marked the beginning of a multiyear identification process. Operation Tidal Wave aimed to take out German oil refineries in Romania but was fraught with errors, including flying low over the targets. McGuire's great-nephew, Mike McAuliffe, said the ceremony brought closure to the family, and the procession was attended by community members and veterans. STORY 2: Commentary: It's time to say goodbye to changing clocks twice a year On November 5th at 2 a.m. local time, daylight saving time ends in the United States, and clocks are set back an hour. This practice, involving biannual clock changes, has a long history dating back to Benjamin Franklin. However, there's increasing support to end it permanently. Various factors, including the digital revolution and flexible work schedules, have made clock changes obsolete. In 2021, the Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act, making daylight saving time permanent, but the House didn't follow suit. Senator Marco Rubio reintroduced the bill this year, and a 30-minute permanent shift between standard time and daylight saving time is a potential compromise that could find bipartisan support. The goal is to eliminate the need for biannual time changes. STORY 3: Oregon cites equity in suspending graduation requirement The Oregon Board of Education unanimously voted to extend a pause on graduation requirements, including basic reading, writing, and math tests for high school students, which were previously halted during the pandemic. This move is criticized for lowering standards and creating lower expectations, particularly for minority students who are disproportionately affected. Critics argue that disparities in student performance on these tests are seen as proof of racial bias, though other factors, such as poverty rates, family structure, and school quality, also play a significant role. This decision is viewed as a misguided attempt to address educational disparities, with the ultimate consequence of setting up struggling students, especially African American and Hispanic students, for failure. They discovered that 'transposable elements' (TEs) in DNA can destabilize the genetic code and cause aging. However, the researchers also identified a specific process called the 'Piwi-piRNA pathway' that controls these TEs. When they enhanced this pathway in experiments with a worm species, the worms showed a lifespan increase of up to 30 percent. By controlling the activity of TEs and understanding epigenetic changes in aging, this research may lead to potential methods for extending human lifespans and determining biological age from DNA. This groundbreaking study was published in the journal Nature Communications. STORY 5: Americans born in 2019 will spend nearly 40 years taking prescription drugs: study New research indicates that Americans born in 2019 will spend a significant portion of their lives taking prescription drugs, surpassing the time spent married or in education. For males born in 2019, it's projected to be 48% (approximately 37 years), while for females, it's expected to be 60% (about 47.5 years), with many women starting prescription drug use at age 15. The study, using data from nationally representative surveys, emphasizes the central role prescription drugs play in Americans' lives. Rates of polypharmacy (taking five or more medications) have also risen, with healthcare costs associated with prescription drugs steadily increasing. Alii is balancing studying in two universities simultaneously, working in a kindergarten, and running a youth hub in her hometown of Ploiesti, Romania. For the fourth year, Alii is responsible for managing the youth hub where young people engage in personal development activities through non-formal learning methods, where the main initiators and designers of activities are young people themselves. In the episode, Alii shares her experience of reaching 400 active members in the Youth Hub, re-structuring selection processes, how they involve adults in the youth hub, and what role international youth work activities play in the development of the Youth Hub.
