Healing at the pool of Bethesda (Sermon Series on John) - Sunday, 31st May 2026[Episode 21 - John Chapter 5 KJV]1. Jesus visits the Sanatorium.John 5:1-4 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.2. Jesus asks a strange question.John 5:5-7 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.3. Jesus heals him on the sabbath.John 5:8-10 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.4. Jesus reveals himselfJohn 5:13-15 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.5. Jesus is persecuted.John 5:15-17 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole. And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day. But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
Pastor Belonga preaches on John 5:1–18
Do you currently experience suffering or difficulty in your life? When Jesus met a man who had been disabled for 38 years he asked him one simple question, do you want to be healed? This might seem like a simple question, but it has a profound meaning. Jesus was offering healing, but not in the way the man expected and it would change his life forever.
What if the places where we feel most stuck are the very places Jesus wants to meet us with His power? In John 5, Jesus encounters a man who has been paralysed for thirty eight years, stuck in the same place, carrying the same disappointment, and unable to imagine anything different. In this message, we see that Jesus does not only heal paralysed bodies, but paralysed minds and spirits as well. He meets us in our hopelessness, speaks freedom over what has held us back, and invites us into a deeper wholeness than we could ever find on our own. Jesus still heals today, and He is still able to renew what has felt stuck for far too long.If you need prayer, we're here for you. John 5.1-18, Healing at the Pool of Bethesda - Ken Rucker - 3-22-2026 by NewBranch
The reflections today are on the Gospel of John, specifically the narrative of Jesus healing a paralyzed man at the Pool of Bethesda. A historical and geographical context regarding Jerusalem's landmarks, such as the Sheep Gate and the Church of St. Anne are given, while explaining the significance of the miracle occurring on the Sabbath. Beyond the biblical analysis, the emphasis is about the danger of spiritual blindness and the importance of avoiding judgmental attitudes toward others. By weaving in personal anecdotes about gratitude and hidden human suffering, I encourage listeners to look past external rules to recognize divine blessings and maintain compassion for their neighbors.
In our John Series, we're focusing on encounters with Jesus. Join us for this episode where Pastor Susan Elsmore teaches through John 5:1-15 about Jesus' encounter at the pool of Bethesda.
What happens when Jesus meets someone who has been stuck for 38 years? In this message from John 5, Susan Elsmore explores the encounter between Jesus and the man at the Pool of Bethesda—a moment that reveals Christ's compassion, authority, and power to bring healing to body, mind, and spirit. Many of us know what it feels like to be stuck in patterns of thinking, fear, disappointment, or physical struggle. Yet Jesus asks the same question today that He asked that man: “Do you want to get well?” _____If you need prayer, we're here for you. We step into the scene at the pool of Bethesda in John 5:1–6 (NLT), where crowds of sick people are waiting for healing. Jesus notices one man who has been sick for thirty‑eight years and asks him a piercing question: “Would you like to get well?” Today, we slow down and let that same question search our own hearts.
If we want to learn and apply the lessons of the Pool of Bethesda, we must ask ourselves some questions: Are you waiting for the Lord no matter how long it takes for your miracle? And, are you willing to be the first to get in when he troubles the water?
Human hope often anchors to external systems and religious rules that foster competition rather than true restoration. Lasting wholeness is found when the focus shifts from waiting for external change to activating the internal presence of Christ, who mandates a life of freedom over legalistic stagnation.

Do You Want to Get Well? | John 5:1–18What if the question Jesus asks is more important than the healing he offers? In John 5, Jesus meets a man who has been stuck for nearly four decades. Rather than starting with a command or a miracle, Jesus begins with a question: “Do you want to get well?”In this message, Tammy Melchien unpacks how Jesus meets us in our stuck places with compassion and authority—exposing our learned helplessness, redirecting our misplaced hopes, and inviting us to trust him as the restoring I AM.This teaching explores:Why Jesus asks relational questions instead of giving quick fixesHow we settle into patterns of “nothing can change”The difference between looking for healing and trusting the healerHow Jesus restores not just bodies, but agency, dignity, and freedomIf you've ever felt trapped by your past, overwhelmed by your circumstances, or unsure how to move forward, this message is an invitation to hear Jesus' question for yourself—and to take a step toward the healing he longs to give.

Welcome to the Grace in Focus podcast. Today, Bob Wilkin and Sam Marr are answering a question about the pool of Bethesda mentioned in John 5:4. Was there an actual angel who periodically stirred the waters to give healing as described in this verse? Or was this some other phenomena that people just mystically believed

This is the third great 'sign' of Jesus in the Gospel of John and is packed full of powerful insights concerning who our Lord is. Come and join us for a great time of worship and fellowship!
Pastor Swenson teaches from John 5:1-17
In this episode, Ronn Mike Chu discuss the man healed at the Pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-15). They describe how this story ultimately illustrates loyalty to the correct deity, as this pool had traditionally been understood to be dedicated to Asclepius, the Roman god of healing. Thus when Jesus cautioned the man to “sin no more” (5:14) he was warning the man to never appeal to another god for healing from that day forward. The episode concludes with a discussion of the implications of the Sabbath, as well and Jesus' authority in relation to contemporary faith practices.
