This week, Drewby and Yergy travel to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium to discuss the case of Maddox Derkosh, a toddler who, while on a trip with his parents, fell into the African Painted Dogs enclosure after being boosted up by his mother, Elizabeth, for a better view. Maddox was killed after 11 of the dogs eviscerated him. What happened next was a legal battle between the Zoo and the Derkosh family over who actually was at fault for the incident. Hospitality Leaders - Interviews with hotel, event, and food service experts
On this episode of the Hospitality Leaders podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Jeremy Goodman, President & CEO at Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. Jeremy is one of the few people who is literally living his childhood dream of wanting to run a zoo. He was an animal sciences major in veterinary school, and worked his way up from small zoos to his current position in Pittsburgh. Like everyone, the onset of the pandemic was scary for Jeremy and his team. Unlike many other businesses, they couldn't keep the animals in their charge healthy and happy while working from home. This meant developing protocols to keep the animals and the team members safe and healthy. Many think of a zoo as just a place to see exotic animals, but it is also a mission-based education and conservation institution. Jeremy prides himself in using creativity to drive that mission. He encourages his staff to use their creativity to come up with new and better ways to do things. They're using that creativity to think of new ways to create a sense of ownership in the community — and it's working. People throughout the community are getting involved. @Dr. Jeremy Goodman @Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Chris Cano Upshift If you enjoyed today's show, please leave a 5-Star review. Dr. Barbara Baker the president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium for thirty years spoke at the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums annual meeting in February (just as the COVID-19 pandemic was arriving in the United States) as part of a panel discussion made up of leaders of major zoological organizations from around the world. She also serves as the Board Chair for the trade association known as the Zoological Association of America. Dr. Baker shares her insights on Expedia's decision to support ticket sales to zoos and aquariums accredited by a few trade groups but not others. Given the resurgence in activism by well-funded companies like PeTA and HSUS, Dr. Baker warns of the federal, state, and local legislative bills targeting such aspects of zoo operations as animal ambassadors, transports, breeding and public display. She argues these efforts are intended to force zoos into adopting a sanctuary model and eventually into extinction. She stresses the need for all zoo and aquarium accreditation organizations to work together and to resist activist efforts to divide and conquer zoo and aquarium professionals. Also, Dr Jo Fava from Animal Necessity returns with a great way for zoo and aquarium fans to support their local facilities struggling with the loss of revenues during the pandemic. Matthew Murphy is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Salem State University in Massachusetts, and will be a Visiting Assistant Professor at UMass Lowell this upcoming fall, teaching statistics and research methods. He earned his B.S. in Interdisciplinary Psychology/Biology in 2005 from Southampton College of Long Island University, mentored by Dr. Paul Forestell. Research experience there included work at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, and work at Brookhaven National Laboratories on a NASA-funded project on radiation's effects on auditory cognition. Matt moved on to Tufts University in Boston where he earned his M.S. in 2009 and Ph.D. in 2014, both in Psychology, under the mentorship of Bob Cook in the Avian Visual Cognition lab. His work with pigeons included absolute and relational control of auditory sequences, auditory entropy, rule-learning, spatial frequency perception, and intraocular visual memory. Matt's research interests include intraocular visual memory and self-recognition in animals. We talked about what got him into the field, why Bob Cook's lab is full of people who give great talks, about a life in science and his dissertation work as well as some of his recent stuff that he just published in JEP with Dan Brooks and Bob Cook. Thanks again to Red Arms for letting me mash up their music in the closing theme. Buy their music now.
