The author may not see or respond to comments on this post. They're imperfect agents of change The world's three largest animal welfare groups are under attack. Their antagonists are not factory farmers, but other animal groups. And the ASPCA, HSUS, and RSPCA stand accused not of hurting farmers, but of hurting animals, through their work with GAP and RSPCA Assured, which certify animal products as being less cruelly produced. The attacks began last summer when the UK animal rights group Animal Rising released a report and footage showing abuses on RSPCA Assured farms. They've since forced the RSPCA to cancel its 200th year celebrations, plastered portraits of RSPCA patron King Charles, and persuaded the ceremonial president and two vice-presidents of the RSPCA to resign in protest. Does hospitality translate from restaurants to pet care? Ken Botts, owner of Creekside Critters Pet Sitters, shares his journey into the world of pet care. He discusses the importance of community engagement, effective hiring practices, and the parallels between providing excellent service in restaurants and pet sitting. Ken emphasizes the role of heart-driven hospitality in building trust with both human clients and their furry companions. Main topics: Transition from food service Importance of hiring practices Community engagement strategies Marketing and brand presence Leadership and team management Main takeaway: Every interaction counts, from the smallest pet to the largest, it's all about heart-driven service. About our guest: My life's mission has always been to help make the world a better place. For the first 35 years of my life, I did that working in the food service industry. Like many in the food service business, I got my start washing dishes - the most important job in the kitchen. Over the years I worked my way up the ranks by managing restaurants, developing training programs, designing concepts, creating process improvement programs, leading marketing and sustainability initiatives, and owning two world famous cafes. Little did I know, my career in food service would allow me to make an impact on such a large scale. As the Special Projects Manager for Dining Services at The University of North Texas, I helped open the Nation's first vegan dining hall on a university campus. With national attention on the success of the vegan dining hall, I was recruited by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). There I created an international culinary training program and helped institutional food service operators develop menus, design concepts, and create training programs focused on plant-based menus and taking animals off the plate. During my time with HSUS, I became very interested in animal welfare issues. I traveled internationally and often spoke at conferences about the connection between our food choices and animal welfare issues. In 2020 I decided to leave the food service and give my full attention to caring for animals and started Creekside Critters Pet Sitters. My business allows me to give pet parents peace-of-mind, and bring happiness to their pets while their parents are away. It also allows me to create fun and meaningful jobs in the communities that we serve. When I am not taking care of animals or developing an awesome team of pet sitters, I enjoy spending time at home with my beautiful wife, Saundra, being involved with my church, volunteering in the community, and hanging out with my three orange cats. You will often find me on my bike going the distance with hopes of someday riding across America or relaxing on the back porch with a cup of my favorite coffee. In episode 77, Marissa Martino interviews Jessica Dolce about a very important topic in our profession, compassion fatigue, or what we're now calling it - empathetic distress. We explore what empathetic distress is, why it is common to experience as a caregiver, and what to do to avoid burnout. This episode is for anyone who cares and feels a lot and takes care of animals (and their people), whether you're a dog trainer, animal welfare professional, or a devoted pet parent. Jessica Dolce, MS CCFE, is a Certified Compassion Fatigue Educator, receiving her training from TEND Academy. She brings more than 20 years of experience working with and for animals to The Compassion in Balance® Program, her online education platform for animal welfare professionals. Jessica is also an instructor at The Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida and has worked with organizations around the world such as the IAABC, National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association, HSUS, Animals Asia, and the ASPCA. She holds a Master of Science in Adult and Higher Education degree and certificates in mindfulness facilitation, positive psychology coaching, and Mental Health First Aid. She lives in Maine with her husband, dogs, cats, and ducks.
Whether you're potty training a new pup or struggling with positive reinforcement, you might want to consult a qualified dog trainer and/or enroll your pooch in a class. “A lot of people say ‘I know how to teach a dog to sit. Why would I go to a class?' And it's so much more than that,” says Lindsay Hamrick, director of shelter outreach and engagement at the Humane Society of the United States and a certified professional dog trainer herself. She advises dog owners to “reach out for help anytime they don't know what to do.” Animal behavior websites can vary greatly in quality, Hamrick adds, but dog trainers can too—so here are some tips to get you started! Starting the search Start your search for a dog trainer at the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, which makes locating a qualified dog trainer near you as simple as plugging in your zip code. You might also try searching "canine behaviorist" and "dog behavior consultant." Making a match Contact potential dog trainers to see if they'd be a good fit. Trainers' websites typically describe their expertise, allow you to submit a form explaining the concerns you have about your dog's behaviors and give you an idea of the cost. It's also important to determine if they have the bandwidth to work with you. Good dog trainers “know what they can and can't handle,” Hamrick says. Some don't work with aggression cases, for example, and focus solely on obedience training or non-aggression behavioral challenges. Setting realistic expectations Remember that dog trainers aren't miracle workers, and behavior change takes time. “If you are talking to a trainer and they think they can fix your issue in a 30-minute television show … you should find somebody else,” Hamrick says. However, while a single session may not solve the challenges completely, we know that access to behavioral support can be pricey unless you have a low-cost option in your community. One consultation can still be helpful in identifying the root causes of your dog's behavior and some initial ways to help them choose new behaviors. And just like when you were in school, homework matters. “If you only practice during those training sessions, it's not going to stick,” says Jessica Simpson, a senior companion animals public policy specialist for the HSUS. A consistent approach is necessary to help dogs generalize the new behavior from the classroom to the home. Virtual training Online dog training options have exploded in COVID's wake. It's possible for dog trainers to size up a dog's issues through virtual chats with the owner and videos of the dog's behavior. After an initial video consultation, trainers can give the owners homework and then watch videos tracking the dog's progress. GoodPup is a great online program for those looking for this approach. Red flags Ideally, you'll find an affordable, certified dog trainer who's knowledgeable about your dog's issues, practices humane techniques and is available either in person or online. But if the training sparks concern, you can simply leave. “If you don't feel good, then remove your dog,” Hamrick says. “If you go to a local obedience class, and the trainer is yanking on leashes or making your dog scared, if your dog is not excited to go to class, then you absolutely have the right to cancel and remove them. You will do more damage by trying to be nice and stay.” BY JAMES HETTINGER
New Bill Stops Landlords from Denying Housing to Tenants with Pets The chair of the California Legislative Renters Caucus, Matt Haney (D-San Francisco) has introduced legislation that prohibits blanket pet bans in rental units in California. AB 2216 will require landlords to have reasonable reason(s) for not allowing a pet in a rental unit and only allows landlords to ask about pet ownership after a tenant's application has been approved. California has the second highest number of tenants in the country, with 17 million families and individuals renting — close to 12 million, or 70% of these renters are pet owners. Unfortunately only under current law only 30% of available rentals in any given city are pet friendly. In San Francisco only 21% of the available rentals currently on the market allow for pets. Similarly, despite having close to 3 million pet owning renters, only 26% of Los Angeles rentals allow for pets. “One of our main strategies to address the housing crisis has been building more housing,” said Assemblymember Haney. “We have to keep building housing, and much faster, but we won't be able to solve this crisis if 12 million people across the state are being denied access to that housing because they have a companion pet. The majority of renters in our state, pet owners, are denied access to the majority of rental units. That makes no sense at all and it's dramatically exacerbating the housing crisis.” The lack of pet friendly housing is causing more than 829,000 tenants to have pets in their units without the knowledge of their landlord. This leaves landlords without adequate coverage for potential damages that could be mitigated if they knew their tenants had a pet such as pet insurance, or reasonable pet restrictions. “My partner and I searched for over a month for a 2 bedroom rental unit that would allow for my small cattle dog mix,” said Andrea Amavisca, a Sacramento resident. “Landlords that initially liked our application would suddenly stop answering our calls once they found out we had a dog. Or others would require a pet deposit close to $1,000 that would put the unit totally out of our budget. Every rental had a different pet policy with fees that varied based on discretion. It felt unfair.” “Like it or not humans have pets, they always have and they always will,” said Haney. “Blanket no companion pet policies are causing landlords to miss out on good tenants who get rejected without even getting a chance to apply for a place to live. The current system is bad for everyone.” “Along with millions of pet owners across California, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) firmly believes that household pets are an integral part of our families. Housing is a fundamental right that should not be limited because tenants are forced to choose between keeping their pet or putting a roof over their head,” said Jenny Berg, California State Director of the Humane Society of the United States. “As we've shown through our prior legislative efforts, HSUS supports removing barriers to accessing housing, like unnecessary and unwarranted pet restrictions, and are proud to sponsor AB 2216 with Assemblymember Haney.” Many tenants are being forced to surrender their pets to already overrun shelters that don't have adequate resources to take care of more animals. A survey of 240 California based shelters revealed that 67,881 pets were surrendered by their owners, with the leading cause being a lack of access to pet friendly housing.
