Matthew Murphy, front-man of the iconic UK band The Wombats, joins us in our first VulnerabiliTea House of 2025. In this episode, Murph answers one of life’s most terrifying questions, “In what ways do you fear you could negatively impact your children?” He also shares his experience with panic attacks, anxiety and depression and is extremely honest detailing how alcohol became a crutch. Becoming sober, which Murph describes as the best decision of his life, was not easy. Murph goes into detail about what the withdrawal process was like and how he began to find joy in activities again. Murph, thank you for soundtracking our youths (and current lives), and thank you for this incredibly helpful conversation. In this episode of "Sara Gonzales Unfiltered," Sara breaks down the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. With eight years of dangerous rhetoric from the Left calling Trump “Hitler” and a “danger to democracy,” Sara, along with special guest Matthew Murphy, a U.S. Army Green Beret sniper, asks some tough questions about the apparent shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, the failure of the Secret Service in removing Trump from the scene, and counter-snipers letting Crooks get off multiple shots before being “neutralized.” Did Crooks act alone? Hello and welcome to episode 177 of the ACPG Podcast. This week Ben is in Newcastle and zooming with Matthew Murphy of The Wombats and Love Fame Tragedy who is in LA. Ben and Murph talk about his second album from his side project Love, Fame, Tragedy. We talk about writing for this project and The Wombats, talk about the heritage of great scouse bands (there's a few), playing live, living in LA, and much more. Even for a writer beloved by his fans for being so frank and open about his romantic failings, tempestuous marriage and issues with drugs and depression, Life Is A Killer is Murph's truest and most lyrically raw album to date, documenting one of the most difficult years of his life. As the now sober songwriter navigates his way through balancing life as a new father of two and touring the world with The Wombats, he explores the mental struggles of managing family life amid self-destructive excess. Written in between London and LA, Murph enlisted the help of producers Jacknife Lee (U2, The Killers) and Mark Crew (Bastille, Rag N Bone Man, The Wombats) to push his sonic boundaries further than ever, with new sounds and even voice notes from his wife Akemi. As singer, guitarist and primary songwriter of The Wombats, Murph has sold over a million albums, garnered nearly 2 billion streams, and, in 2022 secured his first ever UK #1 album with the acclaimed Fix Yourself, Not The World. Thank you to Murph, Charlie and Murph's dog for coming on and support with this episode. See you very soon for season six.

People weren't aware that there was a history that could define what's in the glass in front of them. By meshing those two together, the awareness drove itself and it has allowed people to talk about the product saying, ‘I don't like gin, but I like this Jigger and Jones stuff.'” – Matthew Murphy, President, Director of Operations and Co-founder of The Devil's Half Acre Distillery. Keep in mind this interview was conducted just BEFORE Christmas 2021. The new Wombats album is officially out titled Fix Yourself, Not The World. Stryker welcomes Matthew Murphy aka Murph to the Tuna on Toast studio where the guys begin their day hitting tennis balls and golf balls in the backyard (checkout Youtube) This leads to a chat about golf and playing golf on the road. Murph shares his feelings leading up to the album release and hitting the road in the crazy time we live in mixed with balancing his home life and professional life. Stryker asks Murph about the making of the new album, Fix Yourself, Not The World. Both Dan and Tord came out to Los Angeles before the world went mad to work on the new Wombats album. During lockdown, Murph talks about finishing it up at his home in Southern California mixed with many zoom sessions with the guys. Murph also discusses the album title and how it came to be. Stryker then asks Murph about the Wombats song "If You Ever Leave, I'm Coming With You". Murph and Strykler discuss the longevity and success of the band and how it's been a slow build, but a very consistent and successful build! Murph tells Stryker he sees the Wombats as a very Pixies (esque) band in terms of their career. Stryker asks Murph about his love for Los Angeles and why he makes LA his home. Murph also talks about the early shows the Wombats first played in Los Angeles and how they had to cancel their next show because as Murph said "he went for it".

Andrew Norlen is a New York-based artist and performer, most recently on stage in the national touring company of Broadway's Kinky Boots. During lockdown, when Andrew was at a loss as to what his performing career was going to look like when things opened up, if indeed they were ever going to open up, and when he'd ever get back to see the people he loved and worked with...he felt he needed to do something to both get creative, express himself and serve as a catharsis to acknowledge and work through the feelings he and his fellow professionals were experiencing. His book When The Lights Are Bright Again started as a little seed of an idea and grew into a book with stunning photography from Broadway photographer Matthew Murphy and over 200 contributions from theatre veterans, theatregoers, theatre dreamers, ushers, designers, creatives...they're all in there. During the pandemic, Jen Fitzgerald, a poet and teacher, became a statistic, forced to find an apartment under duress as the city closed down around her. The situation the fifth-generation New Yorker and single mom found herself in has everything to do with what has happened to her city—and other hyper-prosperous American metropolises—during the last decade. They are now built to exclude the poor and even the unstable middle class, and certainly most of the poets. In COVID lockdown, Fitzgerald was thrown back on her resources, which included poetry she wrote about her period of homelessness. Her greatest asset might have been her robust social network, which she reached for in her desperation. And it was through community that the light poured back into her life.On this episode of Going for Broke With Ray Suarez, Jen tells her story, and shares her profound poetry that came out of the experience. We also hear from Matthew Murphy, executive director of the NYU Furman Center, a think tank devoted to trying to solve the housing crisis.Want more from the Going for Broke team? Happy new holiday drink menu at Starbucks day! Let's talk trash! And babies. And Timothée Chalamet for some reason? While also peppering in a quick argument about whether or not ghosts can smell or taste. We have a lot of ground to cover in this episode. Today, Elyse discusses the logistics of baby-napping - I mean the best ways to prevent your baby from being baby-napped - in her prelude to her chosen show this week, Switched at Birth. As the first mainstream TV show to feature the deaf community in a centered and significant way, this show has a lot of positive things going for it. However, we'll see that it does fail to hit the mark on some important parts of that representation. Claire then takes things away with a show off-the-beaten-path that captured their heart within the first several episodes - Ghosts. This show is about a quirky group of characters, some living, some dead, as they attempt to live together in harmony. Cheeky and fun, Ghosts is a can't-miss for all our fellow trashy TV lovers out there. P.S. Timothée Chalamet starring in Statistics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvWefB4NGGI P.P.S. The names of the characters Claire was struggling to think of were Samantha and Jay :) Before we go: Elyse: The musical 35mm: A Musical Exhibition, by Ryan Scott Oliver and Matthew Murphy. A multimedia production performed anthology-style, where each standalone song is paired with a connected photograph. Elyse recommends checking out the song "The Ballad of Sara Berry" in particular if you're looking for somewhere to start. Watch either on Youtube for the full multimedia experience, or listen to the songs wherever you get your music. Claire: The musical Come from Away by David Hein. Hey strangers! It's been a minute but we are back! This week I sat down with Andrew Norlen to learn more about his process for creating the book 'When The Lights Are Bright Again'. It began as an artist's desperate desire to express himself inside a worldwide pandemic, but in one year's time it has grown into a theater industry and country-wide outlet for healing, grief, justice, and hope in the theater community during the pandemic. When The Lights Are Bright Again immortalizes the stories, struggles, and successes of an industry that was first to be shut down and one of the last to return. Andrew Norlen weaves 200+ letters from Broadway theater veterans, devout theater goers, teenage dreamers aching for their day in the spotlight, long-time ushers, designers, creatives and countless other arts workers in tandem with a brand new breathtaking photo series by Broadway photographer, Matthew Murphy. Not only has the creation of this book allowed the theater community to grieve and express themselves in a new way, but for every copy purchased, a portion of the profits will directly benefit The Actor's Fund. This book will continue to help support arts workers to thrive and maintain financial stability for decades to come with every copy sold.

Ryan Scott Oliver is one of the most prolific musical theatre writers of our generation! He and I go back a long time and I didn’t think I could respect the man more until we had this conversation! Of course *you* know RSO for his tremendous, game-changing musicals such as WE FOXES or JASPER IN DEADLAND, but did you know one of his musicals actually made an appearance on a certain former presidents reality TV show??? And I'm sure we’ve ALL jammed out to his song-cycle “35MM” with songs inspired by his husband, photographer Matthew Murphy, but I bet you’d never guess which cartoon gave Ryan his sexual awakening! OF COURSE we are *allllll* excited about his musical adaptation of the novel/film “Hugo” but I bet you’d be surprised to hear who Ryan chooses to off in our Broadway edition of F***, Marry, Kill! Well we go deeper than a canyon on this episode discussing all of this and much much more. I love him, you love him, so tune in and turn it up because NOW we’re talking with Ryan Scott Oliver! Sore knees? Can't run? Bad hip? Need replacement? Shoulder injuries? Why doesn't the body reproduce cartilage as it does when you are a teenager? Well guess what, it does. New research from A Stanford University study shows a breakthrough in stimulating stem cells and actually regrowth of cartilage. Maybe you won't need that knee or hip operation one day in the future. We talk to researchers Dr. Matthew Murphy currently at The University Manchester, and Charles Chan Assistant Prof. at Stanford's Palo Alto campus in California.
We had the great opportunity to visit with MacKenzie Davis, a Managing Partner at SailingStone. SailingStone is a well-known, highly regarded global natural resource investor based in San Francisco. The firm has recently completed some fascinating research on the changing energy world and that was the focus of our conversation.MacKenzie walked us through a summarized version of SailingStone's whitepaper entitled "The Energy Transition: Outlook and Implications for Upstream Commodities." For a link to the complete report, please click here. Get ready... the energy transition discussion has more assumptions and variables in it than you can think through in one sitting. We loved our conversation with MacKenzie as his real world demeanor made it easy to pause, question and sometimes debate.Matthew Murphy made his first COBT appearance to discuss the recent BP news on a new strategic course for that company. We also had Craig Webster, TPH's Head of ESG join. The regular cast of COBT, Mike Bradley, Colin Fenton, and Matt Portillo, also contributed to cover oil and crude prices, earnings season, and the future of electric vehicles. It was a content-packed day!

One of the most effective ways Broadway productions share their stories is with what are called “production photos.” These are images captured on a theatre stage, with the sets, costumes, lights and makeup. They are meant to give viewers a glimpse into the world of the play with just a singular image. Think back to your childhood. What plays and musicals turned you on to a love for theatre? I bet as you’re thinking of shows, you’re imagining specific moments - those captured in the show’s production photos. Is it the cast of Rent proclaiming “Viva La Vie Boheme?” Elphaba raising a broom above her head as she defies gravity? Just like cast albums or televised performances, these production photos are an important calling card for a theatre production. Not all the time, but often these calling cards will feature the show’s ensemble. Think back to Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 and those images of its whirling ensemble. Or the current campaign of Moulin Rouge! Featuring four actors with the bohemian ideals tattooed on their bodies. Those both happen to be shots by my guest for this episode, Matthew Murphy. As one of Broadway’s most in-demand photographers, he’s shot everything from the Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda pointing toward the sky to Alex Brightman’s creepy, kooky glare for Beetlejuice. I asked Matt into the studio to talk about what makes a great theatre photograph and stories behind creating some of the most iconic theatre images of the last decade. Here’s our conversation... A move to Los Angeles may have mellowed Matthew Murphy out a bit. The warm weather and sunshine has tends to have the effect on people, and the results have certainly begun to manifest themselves on The Wombats’ fourth album. But as the title Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life, clearly indicates, for all the talk of slowing down, the biting sarcasm that has come to define the Liverpool group’s output is still clearly in tact. Murph certainly won’t go so far as calling himself “happy,” but at the very least, he appears to be doing a valiant job keeping those demons at bay. The frontman joins us to talk about the trio’s 15 year journey and the importance of playing well with others.

ON YOUR FEET! The musical is a story of rhythm and resilience. It covers the lives of Gloria Estefan and her husband Emilio Estefan to and through success, and tells a story of setbacks and love. The foundation is built upon music and at its core is the legendary Miami Sound Machine. We sat down with Jorge Casas and Clay Ostwald of the original members of the Miami Sound Machine, who help bring all these iconic songs to the Broadway stage. We talk about the tour and the transition of pop-Latin-jazz to theater, the accident that changed everything, and the recovery and success of “cross over” Cuban American Music that Gloria, Emilio and the Miami Sound Machine brought to the world. The show is currently playing at the Boston Opera House through April 29th, 2018. Go to www.boston.broadway.com for more information. Relationships seem to be more difficult to maintain today than in the past. Is this because of social media? Or is it because it’s difficult to trust other people? And why does the Bible say that I’m supposed to love our enemy? Matthew Murphy, a member of Holy Cross, and I tackle these questions as we talk about relationships in this 56th episode of the Praying With The Eyes podcast. Matthew Murphy, a member of Holy Cross, lives in Black Forest, Colorado. He was a certified EMT by the time of his high school graduation and is now continuing on to become a Director of Christian Education next fall at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska.
