How to Strategically Create C-Level Talent Pipelines for Your Clients, with Lee Ann Howard, Ep #245

The Resilient Recruiter

Imagine this: being so meticulous in your candidate screening process invites an unexpected face-to-face investigation from Federal Agents. That is what our special guest, Lee Ann Howard, had to go through when starting as a recruiter in her early 20s. The secret to her 'suspicious' expertise? Simply asking the right questions and listening carefully to candidates.   Lee Ann is the visionary Founder of Howard & O'Brien Executive Search. With a keen eye for identifying top talent in senior management roles and a specialization in HR, finance, and sales and marketing functions, Lee Ann stands as a beacon of excellence in the realm of executive search.   You will surely enjoy Lee Ann's insights on how to build a continuous pipeline of senior management roles for your clients and what it takes to have long-lasting strategic client relationships.   Episode Outline and Highlights 01:18 How Lee Ann left broadcasting to get into recruitment.  05:05 What made Lee Ann stand out in her early years; Her astonishing story of why she had to be investigated by the government because of her recruitment activities. 12:05 Emphasizing learning and development. 20:04 From corporate to executive search - Lee Ann shares her transition.  27:15 Discussion on the board recruiting business model of Howard & O'Brien. 45:48 Lee Ann explains their Conversation with the Board program. 48:38 Discussion on their Reverse Placement program. 51:17 How to cultivate long-term strategic client relationships. 57:30 Making it a family business - how Lee Ann's children eventually joined her in the business.   Unexpected Government Investigation for Doing a Thorough Job Lee Ann shared an astonishing story about being investigated by federal agents because of their extensive knowledge of security-cleared roles and positions.    “I ended up getting investigated by the government because they thought I was a spy because I knew too much … I literally got visited. I was visited by the government. It was unbelievable because I was sitting in my office and the receptionist came back and they said, there's somebody here from the government to see you. And I'm like, I've paid my taxes because that's the only thing I thought I could possibly do wrong. And I got taken into a conference room and they said, we believe you know too much about what's happening. And I'm like, no, I'm not a spy. I don't work for Russia.”   This made her realize that she was probably doing something right if she was getting information that other people were not getting in their industry. Indeed she was! Asking the right questions, and being meticulous in her job, contributed highly in her success as a recruiter and later on as a recruitment business owner. Some of the takeaways on Lee Ann's success factors are as follows:   Instinctive Recruiting Ability Curiosity and Continuous Learning  Strong Relationship Building Commitment to Hard Work Personalized Approach  Client and Candidate Engagement Being Not Focused on Sales, But on Relationships    Which of the above success factors resonate most with you as a recruiter or business owner? Board Recruiting, Conversation with the Board, and Reverse Placement Programs Lee Ann also discussed key strategies that they implement in Howard & O'Brien with the focus of providing a continuous stream of C-level talents to their clients. The three main programs she discussed are Board Recruiting, Conversation with the Board, and Reverse Placement. Below are the key concepts of the programs:   Board Recruiting Board recruiting is the process of identifying and placing individuals in board positions for organizations. Unlike traditional executive search, it involves adding responsibilities rather than replacing someone. The process includes:   Engaging with CEOs, board chairs, or governance committees to define the board's needs. Creating a strategic long-term plan for board composition. Ensuring cultural fit and alignment with the company's strategic direction.   Conversation with the Board This is a program aimed at increasing diversity and exposing more candidates—particularly women—to board opportunities. It was developed as a way to help executives, who may not see themselves as board material, realize their potential for board service. It involves:   Facilitating networking opportunities between potential board members and current board leaders. Encouraging companies to consider non-traditional candidates who bring valuable perspectives.   Reverse Placement Programs This is a specialized career development service for executives looking to join boards. It is either funded by companies or individuals and serves as a way for leaders to continue their professional growth. It provides:   Guidance on positioning oneself for board roles. Strategic networking with board leaders.   These programs put Lee Ann's team in a strategic position, providing them a long-term relationship-building with existing clients.    Cultivating Long-Term Strategic Relationships On this topic, Lee Ann summarized what can make you stand out with the following experience she had: “What makes you different is what you're trying to do. And I think it's the little things. There was a marketing person that I was interviewing for a job and she knew I'd just gotten a new puppy and she sent me this little assortment of stuff for my puppy. Now I still remember that because, I mean, she listened to what I was saying. It, you know, she probably spent $20 on it. But what an impact.”   It is indeed the little things you do. Some of the best practices that Lee Ann and her team have been doing over the years are as follows: Long-Term Value Over Transactions – They prioritize relationships rather than quick sales, consistently providing valuable insights, industry articles, and strategic advice.   Community Engagement – Each team member is involved in community initiatives, reinforcing their reputation as good corporate stewards and deepening trust with clients.   Personalized Touchpoints – They maintain relationships through handwritten thank-you notes, customized gifts (e.g., olive oil or cherry salsa), and small but meaningful gestures that make an impact.   Being Helpful Beyond Business – They go beyond recruitment by assisting clients in unexpected ways, like recommending a plumber and reinforcing their role as trusted advisors.   Their approach is centered on authenticity, generosity, and a long-term mindset, setting them apart from competitors. As Lee Ann concluded, “It is putting yourself second and putting others first.”   Lee Ann Howard Bio & Contact Info As Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Howard & O'Brien, Lee Ann Howard brings with her a passion for understanding people and dedication to following their journey in executive leadership. In her 25 years of connecting high-caliber candidates with her clients, she has solidified her reputation in driving quantifiable success for million and billion-dollar companies across North America.    Lee Ann leads a Women-Owned Business and carries this spirit into diversity, inclusion, and equitable placement strategies.    Lee Ann founded Conversations with the Board® in 2001 and continues to lead workshops for those who serve or have the desire to serve boards. She is currently on the board of the American Heart Association as Leadership Development Co-chair and past Board Chair as well as Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) Family Business Center Advisory Committee. She has served on the boards of MetroHealth Foundation Board - Membership Committee Chair; the John Carroll University Entrepreneur Association - Executive Committee; In Counsel with Women - Membership Chair, The Gathering Place, Women's Community Foundation, and Business Volunteers Unlimited (BVU).   Lee Ann is especially passionate about and involved in the shared impact of individuals in greater Cleveland. She got to a point in her life where she was ticking all the right ‘success' boxes that we've been conditioned to believe are the formula to winning at life. But, on the inside, she was tired, sad and had begun to believe that finding the kind of work and life that actually felt fun and worthwhile had completely passed her by.She reached a breaking point and whilst in search of help, a book literally fell on her head at her local Barnes and Noble store. One that coaxed her to do some exercises to draw out what actually made her happy. That sparked the beginning of her journey and completely spun her off on a magical trajectory to where she is today. Welcome to season 4, episode 4 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. Please take a moment to write a review and share this podcast episode if it resonates with you.  This week's guests are Sylvia Allen, President, Allen Consulting and Founder of Sylvia's Children in Uganda, Africa. Joining us is Terese Rolke, Executive Director, Monmouth Regional Chamber of Commerce. Listen in to hear how Sylvia became the grandmother to many in this incredible school in Uganda.  Sylvia's Children is a non-profit founded to help the children at the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary and Day Care School in Mbiriizi, Uganda, Africa. The school is based on the British model and goes through Primary 7. After that the children go on to Secondary School (S-1 through S-6) and then can go to college and/or technical school. The original objective was to teach the school how to be entrepreneurs so they would not be dependent on the charity. With the increase in enrollment (439 to 1080), the building of a 6,000 sq. ft. medical clinic, having a farm with 8,000 chicken, 42 pigs and 7 acres planted in corn and beans plus 100,000 coffee tree seedlings the school is capable of supporting itself. Thus, the initial mission was accomplished. The mission of the organization has been expanded to include providing secondary school and advanced education to any orphan that wishes to go beyond P-7. As of January 1, 2023, they have 150 orphans in secondary school and 50 in college and/or technical school. They have already had 77 orphan graduates and another group will graduate summer 2023. These are the people that will change and improve the culture as they move into adulthood. Sylvia invited Terese and others to take a trip to visit the school in Uganda in November 2023. Sylvia lives in NJ. Terese shares what an incredible experience it was to meet the children and provide them with gifts and trinkets during their holiday season. Included in the group of volunteers that took time out of their own busy schedules to have this incredible experience was a healthcare professional.  She checked in on the children to make sure they were doing well.  Terese, started as a volunteer for the Monmouth Regional Chamber of Commerce, became a board member and the moved to a paid role as the full time, Executive Director. It is through her work there that she met Sylvia. Sylvia is a member of MRCC and has been honored through the organization with an Athena Award. Terese described the experience of going to visit Sylvia's Children as “amazing”, saying the children “stole her heart” immediately. "The Hopebox Theatre is built on the power of the performing arts to help people heal.  As a four time cancer survivor, our founder Jan Williams has known first hand the struggle and strain that cancer puts on an individual, their family, and their community. It was during her third battle with cancer during an especially difficult treatment that the vision of the Hopebox came to be. A group of her theater students had come to her doorstep one evening to sing some of her favorite broadway show tunes and provide love, support and the hope that Jan would have a better tomorrow. This event changed her life forever! It brought her hope... so much hope that suddenly she didn't feel sick or even tired. In fact, that night she couldn't sleep because she was so overwhelmed with the love and hope that she felt!    As a result, Jan was inspired to start the Hopebox Theatre. She wanted to be able to give back to those who were also struggling with cancer by paying it forward. Jan felt like that experience at her doorstep brought her new life, renewed joy and especially a bright hope for her future! So even though she didn't know whether or not she was going to beat her cancer, she went out with her beautiful bald head and found an amazing partner Curtis Dalton, who also believed in her intended mission. “To Bring Hope to Families Battling Cancer through the Performing Arts!” Curtis' family had also felt the effects of cancer when his mother passed away from cancer when he was nine years old. This theatre has been a perfect way for him to honor and cherish his mother. So with a lot of faith, Jan's experience with theatre and Curtis' background in construction, these new partners purchased a vacant church building in Kaysville that Jan had been keeping her eye on. They knew the moment they walked into the space that this is where the Hopebox should be! A couple months later, as renovations were underway for the new theatre, another friend, Derek Raynor came aboard as the third partner in this new adventure. Derek brought unique expertise and experience in theatrical technical design and together they started a not-for-profit organization called "The Hopebox Theatre of the Performing Arts!" It was a dream come true for all of them! In Jan's own words…. ”At times I've questioned why God has kept me alive. I'm so thankful to be able to see my vision realized by being able to soften the effects of cancer to an individual and their family! It is truly a dream come true! There is no place I'd rather be, than working at this theatre! We may be small, but our mission is great and we are making a positive impact... one life at a time!  I feel so blessed to be helping families in our community find hope during one of the hardest times in their life!” Every person, every production, everything we do at the Hopebox Theatre is driven by our mission as we strive to bring hope and light into the lives of those who are battling dark times. We invite you to join us and be part of our Hopebox Family in whatever way you can. Whether that's on stage, as a part of a production team, behind the scenes, in the audience, or as a sponsor... we want to share our mission with you and those you love." https://www.hopeboxtheatre.com/home

E317: Working With Essence - Carol Sanford Interview

Fire in The Belly

Carol has a precious way of looking at life. After a decades' long career helping businesses continue to innovate in the long-term, Carol has found an approach to her work that integrates her Mohawk First Nations heritage and “logical” business economics. She has been called a “positive contrarian” by peers and her students for how she tries to embed traditional, holistic teachings in modern-day theory. We have a wonderful conversation about how to exercise our own capabilities to find out what we are made of, how we can trade passion for more sustainable caring, and how to make the most out of every day by waking up with the aim of staying humble and to learn something new.  KEY TAKEAWAYS  Don't trust someone immediately if they call themselves an expert without testing it through your own life experience first. Someone self-identifying as an expert might mean they've studied a fragment of something for a number of hours but they also have a bit of an ego about what they've learned.  Go into each day open and willing to learn. You can't think that what you know right now is it, you have to be prepared for cracking open your own worldview. Work hard at figuring out a way of improving your own capability to test out ideas in the world and in real life, so you can find out what works for you.  We are all connected. We have individual roles to play within our families, within our local communities, and we are affecting change within those structures that slowly ripple outwards.  BEST MOMENTS   “Well, ego is a very useful instrument if my essence is in charge of it. So, ego in some traditions, and this is one that I question, is we have to kill ego. Well, that didn't quite make sense because ego for me has a couple of different directions:it can go toward arrogance and hubris, [the whole] “I'm the best thing since sliced bread”, or it can go toward courage, helping myself overcome that which I could be reactive to. Ego to me is an instrument of direction setting; it's an instrument that we use to manage the parts of ourselves that are not useful.” “I remember one morning when I woke up and remembered a message from my grandfather about ‘what do you need to be humble about today? What do you need to be humble about? ‘So I started using that to ask [myself daily] what my aim should be.” I am often asked about what I am passionate about and have fire about. I always say, those are the things that get people in trouble, because we end up on a roller coaster, and things are great, and then things are low. What I really pursue is caring. I made it in a way of growing people. And I find that if I pay more attention to that than passion or fire, that I'm [going to have a more]  stable energy.” “I had a grandfather who was part Mohawk, which is an Indigenous tribe here in the U.S., part of the Iroquois nation. And he was the one that taught me that idea. He said the calmness, the quiet allows you to see more and manage yourself in uncertainty and changing times. The way you want to do it is not to be subjected to whatever is out there pulling you or scaring you. And I have to tell you, it took a very long time to grow that in me.”  ABOUT THE GUEST   Carol Sanford is a consistently recognized disruptor and contrarian working side by side with Fortune 500 and new economy executives in designing and leading systemic business change and design. Through her university and in-house educational offerings, global speaking platforms, best selling multi-award-winning books, and human development work, Carol works with executive leaders who see the possibility to change the nature of work through developing people and work systems that ignite motivation everywhere.  For four decades, Carol has worked with great leaders of successful businesses such as Google, DuPont, Intel, P&G, and Seventh Generation, educating them to develop their people and ensure a continuous stream of innovation. Among her many recognitions, Carol was recently named Executive in Residence and Senior Fellow in Social Innovation at Babson College and received the Athena Award for Excellence in Business, Mentorship and Community Service. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Cranston native, Thomas F. Healey was an American Major League Baseball player who pitched for one season. In 1878 he played with the Providence Grays and Indianapolis Blues. For his career, he compiled a 6-7 record in 14 appearances, with a 2.39 earned run average and 20 strikeouts. Now for our feature story: Susette Tibus was surprised one afternoon this summer to find Lisa Konicki, president of the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce, and Geraldine Cunningham, a longtime chamber member, standing in the doorway to her office at Simply Majestic jewelry on Williams Avenue. She was even more surprised when they told her why they were there: She had been chosen as the recipient of the 2021 Athena Award. "What?" Tibus asked, a look of confusion spreading across her face. "What do you mean?" Then Cunningham, smiling broadly, placed an enormous bouquet of flowers in Tibus' arms and announced she had been chosen for the honor because of her efforts in helping other women achieve leadership roles and for being such a stellar community servant. Tibus, who owns the jewelry store with her husband, Chuck Sneddon, has served in a number of leadership roles for local organizations. The Athena Award honors local women who have helped other women achieve leadership roles, excelled in their careers and been active in community service. "For once in her life she was at a loss for words," Konicki posted on Facebook shortly after Tibus let the news sink in. "Stunned and humbled ... off camera she attempted to divert attention from her contributions." Maria Pucci, the Ocean Community Chamber Foundation chairman said "Susette Tibus meets all of the criteria perfectly. She has given generously of her time and talents to mentor many women over the years and has also worked to create job opportunities and advancement opportunities for women. Her community involvement is nothing short of spectacular, with dozens of regional nonprofits owing a huge debt of gratitude to her." Among her many community service roles, Tibus has served on the boards of directors for the Westerly Hospital Foundation and the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center, served as president of the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce and chaired the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival. She has served as the vice-chair of the board of trustees for the Mystic Aquarium and has chaired both Stonington's Police Commission and the Connecticut Police Commissioner's Association. Galit is all about helping women to become successful. She wants to be that role model for women and also inspire, motivate and empower women. She wants empower women to have the mindset that they can make in revenue more than a six figure income. ALL ABOUT GALIT: As a globally recognized public speaker and award-winning entrepreneur, Galit Ventura-Rozen understands that to be a person of influence is meaningless - unless the recognition is used as a means of helping others. Her journey into entrepreneurship began at twenty-one, when fresh out of college with a degree in Business Administration from UNLV, Galit boldly stepped into the male-dominated world of commercial real estate. When she married and started a family a few years later, the added responsibilities only further fueled her passion for having it all. As a commercial real estate broker, Galit owns and operates Commercial Professionals, where she has sold over $900 million in commercial property in Las Vegas over the past 25+ years. After enjoying a very lucrative career as a real estate expert, she began to experience sleepless nights with racing thoughts. As a then working mother of three, Galit wanted to help women, and so returned to college at the age of 38. In 2016, she earned a Masters's in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northcentral University and graduated with honors. From there, Galit began a one-woman mission to empower, inspire, and motivate others to believe in themselves.  Whether by using lessons from her book, The Successful Woman's Mindset, offering innovative strategies for HR as a corporate trainer, or raising the productivity of others as a Business High-Performance Expert - her passion and energy are almost palpable.  What sets Galit shoulders above the rest is her unwavering belief in others and her insistence that the possibilities at success are limitless when we get out of your own way. Most recently Galit co-founded the Everyday Woman's movement to build a community where women can have the support and be uplifted to do and be what they desire in their life and business. Her success did not go unnoticed - she has received many awards and is globally known and respected for her work with charities and non-profits.  Galit most recently received TMG Entertainment Silver State Award for Entrepreneur of the Year, National Association of Women Business Owners – Woman of Distinction Award for Professional Services, was named Infinity Business Magazine's Top 5 Female Professionals You Should Know, My Vegas Magazine Top 100 Women of Influence for 2017 and 2018, the TMG Entertainment Silver State Award for Best of the Best Local Motivational Speaker/Coach and Nevada Woman's Chamber of Commerce honoree for the Athena Award in Leadership. She has been recognized in the Top 100 Real Estate Agent's Magazine, on the cover, as the Women Behind the $1 billion Commercial Real Estate Company, by P.O.W.E.R. magazine as a top Commercial real estate broker and entrepreneur and in Wealthy Woman Magazine as the Entrepreneur of the Season. Lie, Lie Again (Lake Union, paperback) by Stacy Wise “starts with a bang—a body at the bottom of a staircase,” says bestselling author BFFs Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke. Combining the dramedy of the Netflix hit, Dead to Me with the scheming of the classic Melrose Place, Lie, Lie Again is a darkly funny, fast-paced suburban drama by award-winning novelist Stacy Wise, chronicling the dangerous entanglements of three women who live in the same apartment complex – and who all have a lot to hide. Stacy Wise is the author of Maybe Someone Like You, winner of the YARWA Athena Award in 2019, and Beyond the Stars, winner of the Athena Award in 2017. Prior to her writing career, she worked as an elementary school teacher and in television casting on shows including Party of Five, The X Files and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. Finding an opening quote from my conversation with Ayse Birsel – One of Fast Company magazine's ‘World's Top 15 Designers' and author of Design the Life You Love was a challenge, mostly because I delighted in re-listening to each moment of it. In this opening quote, Ayse is talking about the joys of having a process that guides her in her design journey.    Her wonderful book, Design the Life you Love is not self-help BS...it's a visual thinking masterpiece and a guide to one of the most powerful and simply stated design processes I've ever seen….and I've seen and made a lot of them.   The double diamond of design thinking was my first design process, the first map to creativity that I followed, and it helped me design entire work engagements, hour-long meetings and multi-day workshops.   But underneath that framework is a deeper one: Ayse's De:Re map. De:Re stands for deconstruction and reconstruction, and this idea is essential if you're going to design anything well.   In the context of designing conversations, meetings and workshops, the key question is: What are the parts that you can see? If you can't see the parts, you can't shape them.   That's why we love frameworks...they help us know what to look for!   The idea of deconstruction is controversial in some spaces. It made me think of one of my favorite quotes from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance:   When analytic thought, the knife, is applied to experience, something is always killed in the process. That is fairly well understood, at least in the arts... Something is always killed. But what is less noticed in the arts—something is always created too.   -Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance   What is created through deconstruction is the opportunity to reconstruct something new.   Ayse asks us to apply this framework, methodically, to our lives, so that we can build our biggest design project, our lives, according to principles we can (literally) live with.   What's truly delightful about Ayse's perspective is that many people still assume that design is for the few - designers. And that designers are akin to artists, disheveled and mysterious and creative. And that creativity is more magic than method. Watch Ayse's TEDx talk, read her book, and you'll see...design is for everyone.   The question is...when you look at a problem, what do you see? A messy mass? Or do you start to deconstruct the challenge into its parts?   This is true of a workshop or meeting or a conversation...what are the parts? Who are the players? What are the goals and constraints? Once you start deconstructing...you can start reconstructing a new configuration and a process to get there.   I could go on, but I don't want to keep you from enjoying this conversation any longer! In this episode of Lean the F*ck Out, we talk with Susan Hyatt about how you can take yourself further as a business owner by defeating self-sabotage through self-love, body positivity, finding what gives you pleasure, and quitting things that deprive you of that pleasure. Susan shares tips and techniques from her own experience and her new book BARE. Defeating Self-Sabotage Episode Highlights: Stop obsessing with your body and revert our energy to what really matters for our life. The “Invisible Workload” of women = Even if you are in a ‘equal’ partnership, women still carry the invisible workload that doesn’t take any credit. The invisible workload is the emotional heavy lifting we do to hold up our family and friends, and keep things moving. When you are not feeling good it’s hard to shift your mindset away from self-sabotage. Environmental Detox = Paying attention to everything in your environment that depletes your energy in some way. What do you need to clean up here? Set boundaries and say no. Take power and time back. This frees you up to focus more on yourself. Lack of willpower is not the reason you can’t make a change or develop a new habit. You are distracted and exhausted by the visible and invisible workload you carry. The antidote to the “more willpower,” “no pain no gain” is women focusing on their pleasure. The Pleasure Principle = the human body is wired for pleasure, if you deprive your body of pleasure and run on scarcity (like through traditional dieting) you are acting counterintuitively to your need for pleasure. You don’t have to deserve pleasure. Your body is wired for it. Give yourself permission. From this you will help to overcome self-sabotage. Do the environmental detox work to reduce self-sabotage. Envy is a good tap on the shoulder. Admiration is hijacked by negative thinking. Envy is a sign of the pleasure you desire or are depriving yourself of. Fuel yourself regularly throughout the day and allow yourself some pleasure food. For every deprivation there is an equal and opposite binge. Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa celebrates a different value of African culture that helps to build and reinforce community. During last year's Kwanzaa celebrations in Rochester, Jessica Lewis moderated a panel during the celebration of Ujamaa, which means "Cooperative Economics." Much of the panel discussion centered on themes of encouraging entrepreneurship in the black community, citing research that black-owned businesses account for just 7% of small businesses (despite making up 13% of the population) and the fact that a dollar stays in the black community for just six hours. Jessica also debuted her show "Ujamaa Rising," which profiles black-owned businesses in Rochester, many of which have a distinct Conscious Capitalism ethos of community engagement. Jessica is the Principal Publicist & Owner of LáLew Public Relations and the ROC the Future Communications Specialist at The Children’s Agenda.
