Most of the listeners on this podcast were probably not born much less visited the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Yet perhaps no project outside the Disney Parks has had more influence on the Disney Parks themselves than the New York World's Fair. So many attractions that we know and love like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Spaceship Earth, and the Peoplemover have their roots in the four exhibits done by the creativity and imagination of Walt Disney and his team of Imagineers for the fair. After considering how Disney captured the interests of those seeking to build a pavilion at the fair, we look at four projects themselves: General Electric's Progressland, Ford Magic Skyway; Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln; and "it's a small world". We'll share little known stories and we'll see all of these ended up in some form or another at Disneyland and subsequently Walt Disney World. And we consider today how almost every attraction built by Disney such as Star Wars Galaxy's Edge has roots in the New York World's Fair. It's almost summertime and kids everywhere are already dreaming about their summer vacation. In 1964, Jimmy O'Sullivan of Cheshire, Connecticut had his heart set on a family outing from Connecticut to the see the World's Fair in New York City's Flushing Meadows Park with its futuristic, space-themed exhibits and “Peace Through Understanding” overarching theme. A short drive down Connecticut's Merritt Parkway and over to Flushing Meadow Park put the O'Sullivan family squarely into the heart of the fair. O'Sullivan still has a photograph of himself at 9 years old in front of the fairs' Unisphere, a 12-story-high stainless steel globe. The 1964-65 New York World's Fair attracted approximately 50 million visitors including many from Connecticut during its two April-to-October seasons. The guest for this episode is Dr. Jason Scappaticci, historian and Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Capital Community College in Hartford. Not only does Dr. Scappaticci have a keen interest in all things World's Fair but he is an avid collector of souvenirs and mementos from the fair. Many Connecticut companies had exhibits at the fair. Standouts include the Travelers Insurance Company's building on the “Pool of Industry”. The building was designed to resemble the company's trademark red umbrella. General Electric's pavilion stood across from the Travelers. It included a Disney designed attraction called “Progressland”. For more information on Connecticut's connections to the fair, read Dr. Scappaticci's article here: https://www.ctexplored.org/connecticut-at-the-new-york-worlds-fair/ Check out the Travelers exhibit “The Triumph of Man” recording here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeSS3SILD9Q Saint Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church, includes both interior and exterior design features from the 1964 Vatican Pavilion purchased and included in his design by church architect William F. Visit The Website: https://herewiththemagic.com Watch Here: https://www.youtube.com/HereWithTheMagic Connect on Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/herewiththemagic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/herewiththemagic/ -- When General Electric approached Walt Disney to create an imaginative, immersive attraction for the 1964 New York World's Fair, they lit of a spark of inspiration that still burns bright to this day. Everything about his “Progressland” pavilion was revolutionary and one-of-a-kind. From the clockwise rotating theater to the advanced Audio Animatronics and the original song composed by the incomparable Sherman Brothers, it was an experience entirely unique to this venue of dreamers and innovators. Thousands of people came, saw, and were mesmerized by Walt Disney's “Progressland,” but even he could have had no idea at the time just how treasured and beloved his show would become in the decades that followed. Known today as Walt Disney's “Carousel of Progress,” this rotating spectacle of American innovation has taken up permanent residence at Walt Disney World, inside Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom. A tribute to Walt's quintessential enterprise and ambition, this attraction remains a space of nostalgia, warmth, comfort and connection to the Disney that once was, and a place to remember the leaps and bounds of progress that have brought us all to where we are today. Once a temporary draw for summertime tourists in mid-century America, this truly timeless experience is a celebration of possibility and a testament to the power of genuine curiosity. It is a tangible and observable manifestation of the ideals of the young and the young at heart, the dreamers and the doers; we who avidly seek joy in new discoveries and work toward a great, big, beautiful tomorrow. And so we invite you to join us as we take our seats in this iconic revolving theater - the show is about to begin!
In 1964, Progressland debuted at the New York World's Fair. The original concept dated back to the 1950's, and new technologies allowed Walt and his Imagineers to finally bring the idea to life. Sponsored by General Electrical, Progressland (which later became known as the Carousel of Progress) was an instant hit and saw waits of around an hour at the fair despite an hourly ride capacity of 3,000 guests per hour. After the World's Fair, the attraction was moved to Disneyland, then to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. With only a handful of changes over the years, Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress is one of the most historic attractions at the Disney Parks, reminding us that "there's a great big beautiful tomorrow shining at the end of every day." In this episode, we'll explore the detailed history of the Carousel of Progress. I'll also include a binaural audio recording so you can virtually experience the current version of the attraction. On this 4th of July, we found it only fitting to present Act II of the Carousel of Progress. Filled with electricity, fancy appliances, blown fuses and a town's Independence Day celebration, the ‘Roaring 20s' was a great time to be optimistic of the future.Hello and thanks for listening to Off Harbor and Main's Time and Place Series - On today's visit we thought it was fitting to celebrate our Independence Day with a little optimism from John at Magic Kingdom's Carousel of Progress. While John has seen a few changes over the years, his message remains the same. Through numerous changes from the show's days as Progressland at the 1964 New York World's Fair to its debut at Disneyland just 7 months after Walt's passing, it was then off to Disney World where it had a period when the show used a different Sherman Brothers tune focusing on “Now” being the Best Time of Your Life. Our favorite little tune wouldn't return until November of 1993 along with a new Tomorrowland boasting The Future that Never Was. Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress continues to preach to this day… There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow...INTERACTEmail - podcast@offharborandmain.comTwitter - @offharborInstagram - @offharborFacebook - Off Harbor & MainWebsite - OffHarborAndMain.com
Join me in our first segment of "Walt Disney at the 1964 New York World's Fair" as we explore what went into creating General Electric's Progressland Pavilion and the Carousel of the Progress attraction at the 1964 New York World's Fair. This long playing show features nearly 2 hours of alternate show versions, early script reads, and a ton of variations on A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow. Enjoy!

Overview: On this episode, I start a retrospective of the carousel of progress. I first take a look at the general concept, then talk about its design, music, and it's installation at the worlds fair as Progressland. Afterward, I talk about the move to Disneyland. Notes: "There's a great big beautiful tomorrow" is said to be One of Walt Disneys favorites because it considers the possibility of tomorrow. And the carousel of progress reflects a lot of good things - moments from the past, hope for the future, and family to name a few key themes. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daves-disney-view/message
