As Hoosier History Live salutes the recent 80th anniversary of D-Day, a milestone during World War II, we will explore the Indiana connections to the largest amphibious invasion ever undertaken. Our guest, World War II historian Ron May, an author and chaplain, interviewed Hoosiers involved in various ways with D-Day, which was June 6, 1944. He also has researched the lives of those who did not make it home. In addition, Ron has visited American cemeteries in Normandy, France, and Luxembourg. So we also will discuss Hoosiers who are buried at the graveyards, including a pacifist from Indianapolis who served in a medical detachment and voluntarily walked into a minefield to come to the aid of two wounded comrades. William McGee, who was 21 years old when he was killed in March 1945, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the military's highest decoration. Ron May, who is based in Carmel, has been a frequent Hoosier History Live guest when we have explored World War II history, most recently on a show in 2023 in connection with his book titled "World War II: Indiana Landmarks".

"This is a story about a Christmas (when) I really didn't know what I was doing.'' That's what a private in the Army infantry from southern Indiana wrote in his diary about Christmas Day of 1944, when, as a POW during World War II, he was forced into a boxcar by German soldiers. Scott Thompson, who had grown up on a farm near Evansville and was captured during the Battle of the Bulge, was taken to a stalag in eastern Germany where he spent the rest of the holiday season. He survived the ordeal and shared his account decades later with Ron May, a World War II historian, chaplain and the author of a three-volume set of books, ''Our Service Our Stories'', that feature interviews with Hoosier military veterans. In addition to interviewing Scott Thompson, who died in 2016 at age 92 after a career as a social studies teacher, Ron talked with Loren Wright, a native of Owen County who, also as an Army infantry soldier, was aboard a transport ship crossing the English Channel on Christmas Eve of 1944 when its “sister ship”, the SS Leopoldville, was sunk by a German U-boat. About half of Loren Wright's regiment were among the 802 soldiers who perished in the frigid water. ''Christmas Eve and Christmas Day have been somber for me ever since,'' Loren Wright told Ron decades later. To share some accounts of what Hoosiers endured during the holiday seasons of World War II, Ron will be Nelson's studio guest. He has been a ''Hoosier History Live'' guest on several previous shows, most recently on a program last May about children and teenagers who confronted special challenges during World War II.

Ron May makes me a tad nervous. Why? He makes me nervous because he is so good at what he does. It's likely awe and respect fueling my moderately managed pockets of fearfulness, that results in nervousness. I digress. Because I'm nervous. I can talk a lot when I'm nervous. But, actually, Ron is so stinkin' interesting I was sort of naturally (or unnaturally, considering) a bit more lean on words. I was so emotional throughout. I think I was rooting for him as I was discovering he was well beyond my cheers. It took me the interview to catch up. He is just someone I could sit and listen to and ask questions of, for hours and hours on end. I am praying that I won't stalk him now. "Accidentally" bumping into him at his favorite lunch spots, as I happen to have an empty chair at my table... that I've been sitting and waiting at since they opened at 11:00... eyes fixed on the door so I don't miss him. Yeah, hope I don't do that. Oh hoho I would so love to. I just hope for him I don't. But, don't be surprised, Ron. Just sayin'. I can't wait to listen again with you all. Thank you Ron May. So much. Umm. You said you like Indian food?
