In This Episode: On this explosive episode of 7Sharp, Blu and Roger Moore hold nothing back! The conversation starts with the rise of Artificial Intelligence—are Christians too scared of it, or is there a real danger in consulting AI for life advice instead of God? Then, the hosts dive into the P. Diddy allegations. Is the community wrong for "bringing down a black brother," or is accountability necessary when accusations are this serious? Blu and Roger debate the culture of silence in the 90s music industry and the shock of the "freak off" tapes. Finally, things get HEATED as Roger tackles a viral video claiming "Nigeria is a construct" and the misunderstandings between West Indians and Africans. They break down colonial history, the "one in, one out" rule in Black British TV (Where did shows like Desmond's go?), and why representation matters now more than ever. Quote of the Week: "If you can survive in this world, you cannot lie to yourself about what you're going to face in the mirror." - Roger Moore Listen Live: Tune in to Affinity Xtra for the best in Gospel Music of Black Origin (GMOBO) and empowering talk.
In this episode Brian shares that as humans created in God's image, we are all worthy of His love.
In this episode of The Edge: Host Roger Moore sits down with fellow Affinity Xtra presenter, DJ Mello, for a candid conversation about the intersection of faith, technology, and music production. DJ Mello drops a bombshell about his recent massive output of tracks, revealing he has been heavily utilizing AI to create new Gospel, Drum & Bass, and Neo Soul music.

Set in the French Alps on the night before France falls to the Nazis, the play imagines a dinner party of female literary greats: Agatha Christie, Gertrude Stein, Dorothy Parker, Alice B. Toklas and Lillian Hellman. The play runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m., through Feb. 8.As the characters discuss what they can do to help Jewish people targeted by the Nazis, Erin says the play raises questions that feel timely.Erin says: What do you want your legacy to be? How do you want to be remembered? Do you want to be remembered as someone who did something to help someone? Or do you want to just be someone who stood back and watched while others helped? There are some serious themes in the show. They deal with antisemitism, xenophobia and your own moral responsibility.— Erin JanssensClassical words meet musical improvisationMinneapolis author Cheri Johnson is looking forward to seeing the Ken Takata Ensemble set the words of Shakespeare, Jane Austen and other classic authors to music. The free event takes place this Saturday, Jan. 31, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at George Latimer Central Library, as part of the St. Paul Winter Carnival. Hear examples of Takata's work here.Cheri says Takata began by setting the songs in Shakespeare's plays to music, but he's expanded to include short Shakespearean passages, often starring female characters, as well as passages from other classic works. She says the music style varies to fit the words.Cheri says: Ken started out as mostly a jazz musician, but there's [also] stuff that sounds very classical, and then other times he does R&B, or it sounds very musical theater. He just sort of chooses a style, it seems, based on what inspires him in the text and how he can imagine a production looking.— Cheri JohnsonA gospel tradition, continuedElla Gates-Mahmoud of Minneapolis says she's been to nearly all the productions of “The Sound of Gospel” since it began in 2018. The production, presented by Second Chance Outreach, takes place Sunday, Feb. 1, at 3 p.m. at the O'Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University in St. Paul.Ella says to expect an array of music, from spirituals to quartets, solos to choirs, spanning the history and styles of gospel.Ella says: I think it's important to note that gospel music is really a transformative experience. It covers an array of life experiences, and it encapsulates people's emotions, from happiness and joy to sadness to celebration. It encompasses all of that, and you can find yourself crying and laughing at the same time. It's just a beautiful experience.— Dr. Ella Gates-Mahmoud

We've got a special conversation to wrap up the year before a holiday break. The Perrys are joined by their friend and Gospel-music artist CeCe Winans. CeCe shares how meeting the Lord at a young age shaped both her music and her priorities in life. The love of God has always been her motivator and she strives to please Him in all she does. From the fear of the Lord helping her navigate the music industry to choosing home and church over public calling, CeCe reflects on what has kept her grounded, She says, “I don't worship what I do. I worship who He is.” CeCe's challenge to listeners is to stay consistent in the things that matter, because you honor God, He'll honor you.Follow CeCe: https://www.instagram.com/cecewinansFind CeCe on her MORE THAN THIS Tour: https://cecewinans.com/tour/This Episode is Sponsored By:https://fieldofgreens.com — Get 20% off when you use promo code PERRY at checkout! Story by: Gail NoblesIntro by: Gail NoblesPhoto: Spotify Promo CardToday we're going to talk about the soulful sounds of a gospel group that truly connected during the post-war era—the legendary Five Blind Boys of Mississippi! Now, let me take you back to 1965 when they graced the airwaves on a show that just captured the heart of rhythm and soul: "Reelin' in the Years." The stage is set, and a hushed excitement falls over the crowd as the spotlight beams down on those extraordinary musicians. With their hands a-clapping, and voices harmonizing in perfect unity, the lead vocalist strides forward, his powerful voice cutting through the air like a divine proclamation. And what a song it is—“Lord, You've Been Good to Me.”Now, when he sings about hearing that voice from heaven, it's more than just a lyric; it's the spirit of resilience and faith that pours forth from every note. The words evoke an image of spiritual guidance and a call to purpose, as he passionately declares that he's been lifted up and led to the promised land. It's this blend of personal struggle and divine assurance that gives their music weight, such dignity.Archie Brownlee, the prominent lead singer known for his soul-stirring delivery, truly captured the spirit of gospel music. His capacity to evoke deep emotions was unparalleled. The Five Blind Boys didn't just sing—they transported their audience to a place of comfort and spiritual awakening. They were, and still are, true pioneers in the gospel genre, bridging the gap between traditional spirituals and the R&B sounds that were gaining traction during that time. And let's not forget their monumental hit, “Our Father,” which reached number ten on the Billboard R&B charts back in 1951. That groundbreaking achievement wasn't just a victory for the group—It showed how gospel music became popular and opened the door for future artists. As we think about the impactful moments from "Reelin' in the Years," let's honor the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi for their contributions to American music. They were not just a gospel quartet; they served as a source of hope and guidance for many people. That's music that truly lasts!I'm Gail Nobles. Thank you for listening to the Gospel Greats!About the great gospel singers.

Given recent events, we have decided not to release a new episode this week. Instead, given rising concerns about state retribution to political violence and the weaponization of law enforcement, we are re-releasing our conversation with Lerone A. Martin from February, in which he discusses his book The Gospel of J. Edgar Hoover. _________________________________________________________ This week, Kelly and John are joined by Lerone A. Martin to discuss his unfortunately timely and prescient book, The Gospel of J. Edgar Hoover: How the FBI Aided and Abetted the Rise of White Christian Nationalism. He also serves as the Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University. He's is an award-winning author. The Gospel of J. Edgar Hoover was published in February 2023 by Princeton University Press. The book has garnered praise from numerous publications including The Nation, Foreign Affairs, The Guardian, Publisher's Weekly, and History Today. He currently serves as an advisor on the upcoming PBS documentary series The History of Gospel Music & Preaching.
Jackie and Preston are joined on the podcast by Gospel music legend Erica Campbell for a conversation on Christian genres and the role of music in our walks as Christ followers. They discuss how race and different cultural experiences factor into the music played in our churches, and how the social media algorithm influences our perception of Christian music too. Is one genre more theologically sound than another? Why is it important for us to not cut ourselves off from how we could experience God in a genre we're not used to? And how can songwriters resist division, keep Jesus at the center, and seek to write music that will actually disciple people?
