Part of Akmaral's speech: Wintrade asked me to do a talk on what I chose as the most important issues affecting my life as a professional woman. So what follows are issues which impact my career as a journalist and film producer, as a professional woman, and indeed, simply as a woman and a mother at this point in humanity's history. To address these issues, I need to focus on 2 questions. First: Why is protest so often depicted as looting? (Or you choose a question – for structure) Second: What do COVID-19 and ISIS have in common? So, to answer the first question, I need to go back to where it all started for me. While studying the situation in Syria, I often communicated with politicians, diplomats, the military, think-tanks and journalists from different countries, as well as researching information from a variety of sources. These sources included independent media in different languages. I've seen time and again how the consciousness not only of an individual or a group of people, the population of entire countries and even on a global scale, can be skilfully manipulated using modern political technologies. The events in Syria are one striking contemporary example of this. Before my first trip to Syria, I had already been acquainted with the position of the Syrian government and the armed opposition during The Astana Process - the peace talks which take place in the capital of Kazakhstan and are aimed at resolving the Syrian crisis. There is a side of the Syrian conflict which has been barely mentioned in the global mass media. This side is represented by the Syrians who have not left their country, continue to live there, resist the military terror and economic and information blockade. They study, work, and give birth to children. Many of them have written to me, telling about what they are going through and asking: Akmaral, speak for us! Through this communication with the Syrians - both those who support President Assad and those who are against him - I have formed an insight into what has happened in Syria, and I'd like to share it with you today. Many participants of the initial protests, who have now left Syria and live in different countries, told me that the vision of the revolution that they wanted to achieve at the beginning was exactly as they dreamed it to be - they had an opportunity to express their views and opinions. According to the world mass media reporting at that time, president Assad brutally suppressed peaceful demonstrations using military forces, as a result, his actions led to the civil war. However, the people in Syria told me that at the time of Western politicians stating, “Assad must go!”, no media enlightened the public about the fact that President Assad had actually met with the protesters, addressed them with a speech, negotiated with them and went on to meet their following demands: Number 1 - Abolition of article 8 of the Constitution, which had positioned the Baath party as the leading political power in the country. This change allowed various parties to participate in the parliamentary elections. Number 2 - Abolition of the state of emergency law, which had prevailed in the country for decades. Number 3 - Banning the exceptional courts. Number 4 - Freeing thousands of political prisoners from prisons, according to the list of names presented by the protesters. The majority of them were radicals, who later joined the terrorist groups. Have you ever read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho?   It’s amazing. I’ve read it a bunch of times.    Guess how many copies the book has sold since Paulo wrote it over 30 years ago…   65 MILLION! (!!!)   It’s been translated into 80 (!!) languages (which takes the prize for the most translated book by any living author) and is widely considered one of the ten best books of the twentieth century.   But you know what? Before becoming one of the best-selling books of ALL TIME, it was one of the WORST-selling books of all time. (Hah!)   In fact, here’s a little story Paulo shares in the foreword to the 25th Anniversary edition of the book (it’s almost as good as the story itself!):    “When The Alchemist was first published twenty-five years ago in my native Brazil, no one noticed. A bookseller in the northeast corner of the country told me that only one person purchased a copy the first week of its release. It took another six months for the bookseller to unload a second copy—and that was to the same person who bought the first! And who knows how long it took to sell the third.    By the end of the year, it was clear to everyone that The Alchemist wasn't working. My original publisher decided to cut me loose and cancelled our contract. They wiped their hands of the project and let me take the book with me. At the end of his journey, the man realizes the treasure was with him the entire time.    I was following my Personal Legend, and my treasure was my capacity to write. And I wanted to share this treasure with the world.   As I wrote in The Alchemist, when you want something, the whole universe conspires to help you. I started knocking on the doors of other publishers. One opened, and the publisher on the other side believed in me and my book and agreed to give The Alchemist a second chance. Slowly, through word of mouth, it finally started to sell—three thousand, then six thousand, ten thousand—book by book, gradually throughout the year.”   Fast-forward.    Eight months later an American visiting Brazil picks up a copy of The Alchemist at a local bookstore and asks if he can translate it. One thing leads to another which leads to another which leads to Bill Clinton leaving the White House with a copy of the book and Madonna and Will Smith raving about it.   Then it hit the New York Times bestseller list and stayed there for more than three hundred weeks.   He says: “People continue to ask me if I knew The Alchemist would be such a huge success. The answer is no. I had no idea. How could I? When I sat down to write The Alchemist, all I knew is that I wanted to write about my soul. Jan and Monika have been discussing topics every month, and this month the theme is “Your Perspective is your reality.” The mission of Monika is for people to know they are loved and loving, at least for a moment in their lifetime. There is nothing you need to be doing in order to deserve love. Our natural way of being is loving; violence and hate come from a disconnection from our true  way of being. You can find a gift in everything, everyone that interacts with you is providing you the opportunity of learning, you are also a gift for everyone that is interacting with you. It is not up to you how the world receives what you give, it is “how” you give it what matters. - First: Just be aware that you are operating in this life with a perspective. You are wearing “glasses”; everything is being tinted by your perspective. - Second: What is your perspective? You have many perspectives for different things and situations. It can change, and you created them. - Third: Lots of perspectives can serve you at one time, and stop serving you. - Fourth: You get to create a perspective that serves you in a better way (next week we’ll go deeper into this concept) When you are looking for something the universe will give you all sort of ways to prove you are right. Whatever happens in your life is as big as you make it. Consider whatever you are experiencing right now as a gift. To the degree that someone express their anger/rage it is a proportionate capability of giving love, is the passion that matters. What does personal development really mean? It is the work, the experience, not just receiving the information. Start to put it into practice by exercising with Monika and Jan about what are your perspectives about love, money, politics, life, death, people, religion, feelings, consciousness… Our perspective on different topics is constantly shifting. A lot of our perspectives can come from times when we are very young, and they are still shaping your perspective now, maybe it is not even your perspective. Perspectives shift in numerous ways. Question yourself: What is your perspective intended for? The universe will give you lots of evidence that what you are looking for is right; you can create a perspective that serves you better. Start by becoming aware of your perspectives and realizing how are they serving you. Monika and Jan will lead you.
