Alex Weeks - How to PUSH your idea forward

Have you got an idea for a business that you sometimes think about? Or do you come across other businesses and admire how they've managed to put a great idea into practice? Do you wonder what opportunities there are to start a tech business and how to go about it? Self-made billionaire Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx says this; “Every person in their life has had a million dollar idea. No doubt. It's just, are you going to take action?” That's a great question to ask yourself. What exactly are you putting into action to achieve your goals? It's a view shared by Derek Sivers, founder of CD Baby in his fabulous oh-so-readable book Anything You Want: 40 Lessons for a New Kind of Entrepreneur. He writes: “To me, ideas are worth nothing unless executed. They are just a multiplier. Execution is worth millions. To make a business, you need to multiply the two.“ It makes sense but sometimes we need to have this truth spelled out clearly. Even if you have the best ideas in the world, if you don't take action, you'll get nowhere. Alex runs a company that helps tech founders who are just starting out turn their ideas into a progressive plan of action, preparing them for launch or to be investor ready. In his talk, Alex will share with us his top tips, based on extensive experience working with entrepreneurs, on where to start when you have an idea, and the essential steps you need to take to test your idea and then launch it into a profitable business. Demystifying the Queen's Honours System with Sir Kenneth Olisa, Jenny Garrett OBE and Alison Bennett, Honours Secretariat

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 9, 2021 49:17

Demystifying the Queen's honours system. It is no surprise that the royal tradition of honouring high achievers goes back to the Norman Conquests. However, what is surprising is that the first ‘commoners' to be honoured en mass started as late as 1917, when the father of Queen Elizabeth II , King George V, began a new order of chivalry called the Order Of the British Empire. He did this to celebrate the outstanding contributions made by British citizen and soldiers to the war effort in WII and the system has remained in place to this day. Today, the Queen's honours are awarded twice per year: New year's awards and the Queen's official birthday. At these times, several types of awards are given, including: The Order of the Garter The order of the Thistle Order of St. Patrick Order of the British Empire Knight Grand Cross Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) Order of Merit Companions of Honour Order of the Bath Order of St. Michael and St. George Royal Victorian Order Royal Family Orders Commonwealth Orders Military Honours and Awards – several including The George Cross and the Elizabeth cross. These awards are not given lightly and are carefully considered before being bestowed. This was especially highlighted in 2012, when Fred Goodwin was stripped of his Knighthood, which he received in 2008 for the services to banking under the Labour Government ( the awards were retracted due to the dishonour of his actions which lead to RBS almost collapsing in 2008). It is a uniquely British honour which must ultimately be respected. However, it is no longer only accessible by the ‘Old Boys' Network': there are a lot of amazing people out there doing incredible things so around 6000 nominations are made each year. On average, approximately 3000 honours are awarded to people every year. Although it was once said that ‘people award you but God rewards you', there is certainly nothing like being acknowledged for all the hard work and the positive contribution you have made to your country. In addition, there is no denying that such awards tend to open doors and often make people more receptive to what you have to share. Dr Yvonne Thompson CBE, founder of WINTRADE was one of those people awarded 20 years ago for her contributions to Britain through her work in the areas of cultural diversity, small businesses and women in business. She has also had the privilege of sitting on the honours' committee for several years, helping to inform the Palace about nominees deserving of being acknowledged. As a result, she has a wealth of experience on the subject and would like to share what she has learned with you. Barbara shares her personal journey: how one person, with one idea, can have a dramatic effect on changing an entire industry. Barbara started her career in finance nearly 30 years ago. She was one of a handful of women in a foreign currency trading room and she dressed like a man, swore like a man, and acted like a man. During the financial crisis she started investigating the representation of women in investment. She found a majority of negative viewpoints. She thus had the idea to interview 50 highly accomplished women from around the world and share their positive messages about money. She released her first report on IWD 2010 and kept writing this annual research report alongside working in her day job as a portfolio manager. Over time, this research started to resonate with people globally: Rich Thinking research was getting noticed. In 2015 she decided to interview global leaders. That research report led to another turning point when CFA Institute (the Global Academic Institution for Finance) asked Barbara to write a monthly column for their Enterprising Investor blog. She spent the next five years speaking at CFA Societies, banks, and investment firms all around the world sharing her research, always sharing positive messages about women and money. Baybars Altuntas, the Turkish entrepreneur, speaker, author, and Angel Investor, has had many high accolades throughout his distinguished, illustrious career. Last week he reaches another highpoint, by being the first man to be featured on our WinTrade Global Talks. Born and based in Turkey's economic, cultural, and historic centre, Istanbul, Baybars is a man with a mission. Formerly a Senior Advisor to the London Stock Exchange, President of the Business Angels Association of Turkey and the current Executive Chairman of the World Business Angels Investment Forum, he understands a thing or two about business. More pertinent to our conversation on WinTrade Global Talks, he is the man with his finger on the pulse concerning the implications for business as a direct result of the pandemic, COVID-19. In his WinTrade Global Talk, ‘‘Towards a hyperconnected digital world' he will start by warning us that the world is on the verge of a great depression. He cites from the latest IMF Global Financial Report that there will be “high market volatility, a collapse in risk asset prices, a reversal of portfolios and a deterioration of market liquidity”. Baybars goes onto cite that the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has seen, “Every country, every society and every economy in the world adversely affected in key areas such as health, employment, finance, trade and business…” With the World Bank predicting that the global GDP will shrink by 5.2% this year; the worst scenario since the Second World War, business leaders and entrepreneurs would be forgiven if they hid under the proverbial blanket for the next two years. Yet, through Baybars's WinTrade Global Talk he opines there is room for cautious optimism for a new breed of business start-ups, scale-ups, entrepreneurs, SME's and investors in the ‘new normal' post-COVID-19. If bravery had a name, it would be Akmaral

Part of Akmaral's speech: Wintrade asked me to do a talk on what I chose as the most important issues affecting my life as a professional woman. So what follows are issues which impact my career as a journalist and film producer, as a professional woman, and indeed, simply as a woman and a mother at this point in humanity's history. To address these issues, I need to focus on 2 questions. First: Why is protest so often depicted as looting? (Or you choose a question – for structure) Second: What do COVID-19 and ISIS have in common? So, to answer the first question, I need to go back to where it all started for me. While studying the situation in Syria, I often communicated with politicians, diplomats, the military, think-tanks and journalists from different countries, as well as researching information from a variety of sources. These sources included independent media in different languages. I've seen time and again how the consciousness not only of an individual or a group of people, the population of entire countries and even on a global scale, can be skilfully manipulated using modern political technologies. The events in Syria are one striking contemporary example of this. Before my first trip to Syria, I had already been acquainted with the position of the Syrian government and the armed opposition during The Astana Process - the peace talks which take place in the capital of Kazakhstan and are aimed at resolving the Syrian crisis. There is a side of the Syrian conflict which has been barely mentioned in the global mass media. This side is represented by the Syrians who have not left their country, continue to live there, resist the military terror and economic and information blockade. They study, work, and give birth to children. Many of them have written to me, telling about what they are going through and asking: Akmaral, speak for us! Through this communication with the Syrians - both those who support President Assad and those who are against him - I have formed an insight into what has happened in Syria, and I'd like to share it with you today. Many participants of the initial protests, who have now left Syria and live in different countries, told me that the vision of the revolution that they wanted to achieve at the beginning was exactly as they dreamed it to be - they had an opportunity to express their views and opinions. According to the world mass media reporting at that time, president Assad brutally suppressed peaceful demonstrations using military forces, as a result, his actions led to the civil war. However, the people in Syria told me that at the time of Western politicians stating, “Assad must go!”, no media enlightened the public about the fact that President Assad had actually met with the protesters, addressed them with a speech, negotiated with them and went on to meet their following demands: Number 1 - Abolition of article 8 of the Constitution, which had positioned the Baath party as the leading political power in the country. This change allowed various parties to participate in the parliamentary elections. Number 2 - Abolition of the state of emergency law, which had prevailed in the country for decades. Number 3 - Banning the exceptional courts. Number 4 - Freeing thousands of political prisoners from prisons, according to the list of names presented by the protesters. The majority of them were radicals, who later joined the terrorist groups. Basma Al Said from the Sultanate of Oman on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. COVID19 has caused a catastrophic impact across the globe on economies and the way that we lived our daily lives. Throughout the world, women have felt the brunt of this global upheaval. As women, not only have to fight to keep our businesses, everything else we have juggled in our substantive role as Superwoman has multiplied by the factor of 10. You see, as women, we are more likely to be the carers of our nuclear and extended families, not only of those who are unwell but in the prevention of our families in catching the virus. Not only does this place us in the direct firing line of the virus, it cumulatively chips away at our health and mental well-being and more importantly...our reserves. In her WinTrade Global Talk, she will be highlighting these multi-faceted issues that we are facing during the pandemic and offer tips on, not only to deal with them but to flourish going forward in an uncertain world.
