Episode 071: John Stockton has assisted more teammates than anyone in the history of basketball. He's a Hall of Famer, Dream Teamer, and is the NBA's all time leader in steals and assists.But in his book, Assisted, he talks about the coaches, family and friends that have assisted him along the way.And today’s interview was no different. He talks about people like his grade school coach and college athletic trainer, and shares how even to this day, the game of basketball continues to teach him life lessons. I was lucky enough to play with John Stockton every preseason while I was in college at Gonzaga. He'd ride his 10-speed bike to the gym to play pick-up with the team & prepare himself for training camp. Even though he was the only NBA player in the gym, no one ever worked as hard as John. Part of Akmaral's speech: Wintrade asked me to do a talk on what I chose as the most important issues affecting my life as a professional woman. So what follows are issues which impact my career as a journalist and film producer, as a professional woman, and indeed, simply as a woman and a mother at this point in humanity's history. To address these issues, I need to focus on 2 questions. First: Why is protest so often depicted as looting? (Or you choose a question – for structure) Second: What do COVID-19 and ISIS have in common? So, to answer the first question, I need to go back to where it all started for me. While studying the situation in Syria, I often communicated with politicians, diplomats, the military, think-tanks and journalists from different countries, as well as researching information from a variety of sources. These sources included independent media in different languages. I've seen time and again how the consciousness not only of an individual or a group of people, the population of entire countries and even on a global scale, can be skilfully manipulated using modern political technologies. The events in Syria are one striking contemporary example of this. Before my first trip to Syria, I had already been acquainted with the position of the Syrian government and the armed opposition during The Astana Process - the peace talks which take place in the capital of Kazakhstan and are aimed at resolving the Syrian crisis. There is a side of the Syrian conflict which has been barely mentioned in the global mass media. This side is represented by the Syrians who have not left their country, continue to live there, resist the military terror and economic and information blockade. They study, work, and give birth to children. Many of them have written to me, telling about what they are going through and asking: Akmaral, speak for us! Through this communication with the Syrians - both those who support President Assad and those who are against him - I have formed an insight into what has happened in Syria, and I'd like to share it with you today. Many participants of the initial protests, who have now left Syria and live in different countries, told me that the vision of the revolution that they wanted to achieve at the beginning was exactly as they dreamed it to be - they had an opportunity to express their views and opinions. According to the world mass media reporting at that time, president Assad brutally suppressed peaceful demonstrations using military forces, as a result, his actions led to the civil war. However, the people in Syria told me that at the time of Western politicians stating, “Assad must go!”, no media enlightened the public about the fact that President Assad had actually met with the protesters, addressed them with a speech, negotiated with them and went on to meet their following demands: Number 1 - Abolition of article 8 of the Constitution, which had positioned the Baath party as the leading political power in the country. This change allowed various parties to participate in the parliamentary elections. Number 2 - Abolition of the state of emergency law, which had prevailed in the country for decades. Number 3 - Banning the exceptional courts. Number 4 - Freeing thousands of political prisoners from prisons, according to the list of names presented by the protesters. The majority of them were radicals, who later joined the terrorist groups. Did you know that Adolph Hitler survived at least six—SIX!—assassination attempts? As you will hear in this PODCAST, these six assassination attempts occurred in 1921, 1938, 1939, two in 1943, and the final attempt on July 20, 1944. Get this: Any one of which, if successful, would have either prevented World War II—as well as the wholesale slaughter of six million of our precious Jewish friends—or brought both the war and the Holocaust to a screeching halt. The older I get, the more questions I have. As but two examples: First: Why did God allow each of these six assassination attempts to fail? I’m not now going to debate the ethics or lack thereof of political assassination in a time of war. Whether or not as Committed Christ-Followers we should support or condemn such actions is way beyond the scope of tonight’s discussion. I’m simply asking: Would not our world have been a better place if just 1 of those attempts had succeeded? What possible purpose could have been served by God allowing the likes of Hitler to live and to continue to torment the human race? The failure of the final attempt on Hitler’s life is to me especially curious given the facts that A) Just 9 months and 10 days later—on April 30, 1945—Hitler killed himself in his bunker in Berlin. And B) Tried and executed as a conspirator to that final, failed attempt on Hitler’s life? A man of far greater and more positive influence than I could ever hope to have, a man—to quote Hebrews—“of whom our world is not worthy.” I’m talking about the German pastor, theologian, and prolific writer, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. A precious, priceless servant of the Lord summarily executed by hanging a mere three weeks before Hitler bit into a cyanide tablet and shot himself in the head. Had Hitler killed himself just three weeks earlier, would not Bonhoeffer’s life had been spared? Could not Bonhoeffer have then continued—perhaps for many, many years—to instruct and inspire the lives of countless Christ-followers the world over with his positive influence? Why did God spare the life of a servant of Hell named Adolph Hitler just long enough to cost the life of a servant of Heaven named Dietrich Bonhoeffer? God does not owe an explanation. But He does allow me to ask the question. So ask it, I will and I do. That’s my first question. My second question is this: Why did God allow a King named Herod Agrippa—a Jew who sold his soul and sold out his own people to the Romans in a cynical quest for power, position, and popularity—to live just long enough to destroy countless lives of Jewish Christ-followers in Jerusalem, as well as kill someone as stellar as the Apostle James? Brother to the Apostle John. Member of Apostolic trio—Jesus’ inner circle—Peter, James, and John? A man—to quote Hebrews—“of whom our world is not worthy.” God does not owe an explanation. But He does allow me to ask the question. So ask it, I will and I do. When it comes to smart machines, we can’t beat them and we can’t join them—so what does that mean for us?In today's interview, I talk to Ed Hess one of the co-authors of Humility Is the New Smart: Rethinking Human Excellence in the Smart Machine Age. In the book, he along with his co-author Katherine Ludwig outline exactly what we need to do to excel in the smart age era, and Hess and Ludwig call it being “New Smart.” In this timely book, they offer detailed guidance for developing several New Smart attitude and the critical behaviors that will help adapt to the new realities of the workplace. This question came from a listener named Brandon. He asked, “What is the best way to ask a friend to leave a podcast and still remain friends?” This is a great question, although a really hard one. What should you do when your co-host just isn't working out? How should you handle it? Key Takeaways: Have a conversation with your co-host, don’t discuss the problems or fire them through text or email. If you’re at the point of wanting to kick someone off your podcast, it means you’ve already made the mistake of not setting clear expectations up front. Work to help your co-host improve; don’t kick them out the door before you’ve exhausted every option. No one is perfect. No one gets everything right the first time. Be willing to work with your co-host to help them improve their weak points. First: Why do you want to fire your co-host? What are the reasons? You need to identify the issues and write them down. Make sure you fully understand what your frustrations are and what you’d like them to do differently. Talk it over with a few trusted friends. Make sure that you’re thinking straight and that your arguments make sense. When you’re ready to discuss the problems with your co-host, have an informal chat instead of just sending them the list of things they’re doing wrong. Have a conversation with your co-host, don’t discuss the problems or fire them through text or email. When you do have the conversation, start by talking about your goals for the show. Are they still aligned? Does your friend or co-host remember the reason they wanted to do the podcast in the first place? Set Expectations In the Very Beginning Setting expectations before you start is key. Have conversations about everything; length of shows, the focus of podcast, goals, expectations, sponsors, audience interaction, brand, commitment, consistency, and so on. Have in-depth conversations about all these things before you start to make sure you and your co-host are on the same page. If you’re at the point of wanting to kick someone off your podcast, it means you’ve already made the mistake of not setting clear expectations up front. Get all of these things in writing. That way, you have a document (even if it’s just an email) that you can refer back to later if there are any questions about expectations that were set and agreed to in the beginning. Who Runs This Podcast? Who’s the Boss? Podcasts rarely have truly equal partners. Someone usually holds more power or authority. If you are in a situation where you are trying to be equal partners, maybe you should consider talking about who should have that 51% power (either you or your co-host). If you aren’t sure who is in charge, think about who is taking the lead. Who handles the admin work? Who runs the website? Who’s in charge? If it’s you, then you can fire your co-host or ask them to leave. If it’s not you, then you might be put in a position where you’ll have to leave the podcast. Maybe Try to Fix the Problems First? Approach your co-host with respect and an open mind. Highlight the good things they bring to the show. Talk about the ways that they are contributing, then talk about what you’d like them to do differently. Discuss the problems with them and give them a chance to change. Work to help your co-host improve; don’t kick them out the door before you’ve exhausted every option. Remember, this probably isn’t going to be a pleasant experience for your co-host. No one likes being told they are doing something wrong or being a disappointment in some way. What are the Qualities of a Bad Co-host? So what are some bad qualities to have as a podcast co-host? Here are a few examples: Their views and values are different than the stated values of the show They’re rude to you or audience members They’re inconsistent (they don’t show up on time for recordings) They won’t help prepare for episodes (being unprepared) They don’t really care about doing a good show, they’re un-interested in success They’re really bad at talking (tons of umms, stammers, and other bad verbal ticks) and they don't seem to care about improving They aren’t interested in providing value to the audience, they’re not focused on what the audience needs or wants What are the Qualities of a Good Co-host? The qualities of a good co-host are pretty much the opposite of the bad qualities: They helps with the workload They show up on time They are excited about the show, they promote the show They invest time preparing for episodes They stay true to the intended purpose of the podcast; they don’t get off track or discuss things the audience wouldn’t be interested in Your Audience Will Notice How You Handle Firing a Co-host You might think when it comes to firing your co-host that it’s not a big deal, but your actions are going to impact your audience too, and how they perceive you. Your audience will notice the change and the way you handle the situation. I mentioned at the beginning of the show that I left a podcast once. I was the original co-host of the seanwes podcast, but I stepped down after 21 episodes. Sean McCabe recorded episode 22 after we had the discussion about my role in the seanwes podcast which led to me deciding to leave the show. I re-listened to that episode this morning and it still stands as a fantastic example of how to explain to your audience that a co-host is leaving the show. In episode 22, Sean revisited the original stated purpose of the show, and explains how I was consistently taking the show off track by conflating all the topics to my career in music, rather than staying focused on the stated purpose of the show, which was business as it relates to design. I have to give Sean props for the way he handled the situation. He got me to agree that my goals weren’t aligned with the goals of the show, and that even though there was nothing wrong with my goals, I wasn’t going to be a good fit for the show moving forward unless I was willing to put aside my needs to better serve the audience’s needs. I wasn’t, so I agreed that it would be better for me to step down. In a way, he was able to get me to talk myself into leaving, which worked out best for everyone. To this day, I still have a lot of respect for Sean and how he approached that situation. He didn’t come to me and say, “Hey, some of the listeners are complaining, and you suck at podcasting”. He said, “Would you be willing to make this change in order to better serve the needs of our audience?” He handled the situation with kindness and grace, and we remain great friends to this day even though I chose to leave the show. Focus on Making the Show Better If you’re thinking about asking your co-host to leave, I urge you to keep the focus on doing whatever it takes to make the show better. Be brave enough to present the problem to your co-host and ask them if they’re willing to work on it. Be patient enough to help them and work with them to make the podcast better for both of you as well as the audience. No one is perfect. No one gets everything right the first time. Be willing to work with your co-host to help them improve their weak points. Q&A: Anonymous asks: What if your co-host is your wife? Ahah, I see what you did there. It comes back to why. Do they seem disinterested? Is their heart not in it? Are they just doing it to make you happy? Does it seem like they aren’t really enjoying it anymore? If you suspect these things, you need to sit down and have a conversation. Maybe there’s something she’d rather be doing with her time. Ask her. In this case the rain cloud didn't appear until after the 7th time of "fervent" prayer, and once Elijah was told the little tiny cloud appeared in the sky, he stopped praying and warned Ahab to get on his way and a torrential downpour hit the land. This chapter exposes a lot of ignorance we have regarding prayer and the will of God.
