In this episode, Kimber sits down with Jeff Bennett of DoD Secureand Red Bike Publishing to answer all of our questions about security clearances and gives us hope that, yes, you can work from home in a job that requires security clearance. Jeff is a veteran and security clearance guru. Together, he and Kimber break down the following questions:  How do I put my security clearance to use after the service? How do I maintain my clearance? How do I even start the process to obtain security clearance?  If you are transitioning out of the service, or are already considering what life after the service may look like for you, rest assured that any clearance you may have when you exit the service can easily be transitioned to a new job. But here’s the catch – you must transition your clearance to a new role within 24 months. If you don’t, you will need to restart the process to get re-cleared.  So, if you’ve got your eye on a job with a government entity or government contractor that requires a clearance, we’re going to cover what that means.   Here is a pro-tip from Jeff: if you know you want to do work that will require a security clearance, go online and download a form (SF-86 or the Security Clearance Application). Start by gathering your addresses for the last 7-10 years, the places you’ve worked, the people you’ve known, etc. Having this list ready is something you can control and a great way to prepare.  What is a security clearance?    To break it down simply, there are three levels of clearance:   1) Confidential (lowest level),   2) Secret (could damage national security), and   3) Top Secret (could cause extreme grave damage to national security).   If you have a low-level clearance, you can absolutely apply to a role that requires a higher clearance. If you have no clearance, absolutely still apply. What is important is your skill level. You should be communicating is your ability to do the job, do it right, and do it better than anyone else. Your strategy is to get your foot in the door with an organization that can get you security clearance or will accept the clearance you already have. It is easiest to start in a position like this actually on-site. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of positions that will start out as telework friendly. However,

John is a firm believer that, “living is people.” It is people who create our experience and our existence here. He is using his experiences and what he has learned through them, including a traumatic brain injury and childhood sexual assault, to pour back into the military community. GreenZone Hero is an online directory of businesses (both veteran and non-veteran owned) that support freedom in one way or another. This includes giving special pricing to veterans and active duty, employing veterans, or supporting the military community in some other way. John is also the mind behind Straight Outta Combat Radio and Task Force Zen Radio, podcasts that tell the stories of our combat veterans so we can change the negative stereotypes surrounding veterans and have an open conversation.  It is clear through spending even just 5 minutes with John that he has a powerful mindset and is a necessary voice for combat veterans whose stories need to be told. Everything he does is with the goal of benefitting our military community. This includes staffing GreenZone Hero with milspouses. Through his work, John is unveiling what it’s like to be a veteran and what it’s like in the life of a service member.   John’s story is a powerful one. He is an Army veteran who has served both active duty and in the Army Reserves. After his service, John married his wife and opened a business that they owned together for 23 years. In 2012, things came to a boiling point in John’s life. He was involved in a drunk driving accident (where he was the driver) and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Following this trauma, demons from his childhood sexual assault came to the surface. John began struggling with mood swings, anger, and insomnia. He was forced to sell his business and faced the potential of losing his marriage.   In 2015, John called a crisis hotline to get the help that he needed to live his life again. Show Notes:April is Stress Awareness Month. This is a great time to look at the stress and the stressors in your life and create a path to eliminate or significantly lower the chronic stress response.In Summary - The 3 Stress Busting Ideas:- Take a Stress Inventory and identify two or three promising stress lowering strategies;- Create a video mind story for one or more of your chosen strategies and prepare a short affirmation using the words, “I Choose”; and,- Practice 1 to 2 minutes of deep, Diaphragmatic Breathing several times a day.Details for Each Idea and More in podcast and in show notes below.Good Stress Versus Bad StressA certain minimal level of stress can be good. It can help us focus attention and martial success resources. That kind of stress is eustress. Eustress can happen for example when we're thinking about a first date with someone, preparing for a presentation, or doing something for the very first time. You've practiced, you're ready to go, you've done all the things necessary. But there are still those butterflies in your stomach. That type of stress is short lived, it’s episodic, The problem stress is long term chronic stress. The sources of chronic stress can be many. They can be problematic situations at work, problems with significant others in a relationship, or ongoing financial based stress. These all (and many other situations) can create chronic stress. How can you successfully deal with stress? 3 Ideas to Dissolve Stress Idea Number 1: Conduct a Stress AssessmentThe first thing I suggest is take an inventory of the top two or three situations, people, or circumstances you believe are stressors. Write those stressors down. Naming the stress and naming the source of stress alone can often help reduce your stress response. Once written down, let your imagination wander and come up with three actions you can take to help reduce that number one stressor.Questions to consider: - Can you eliminate the trigger? - Can you better prepare for the problem situation? - Is this a situation that can helped or eliminated with an honest, open conversation? Let your subconscious mind have free rein to offer ideas that can eliminate or reduce the stress response.Repeat the same process for the second and third stressors on your list. Idea Number 2: Take Defense Action Ahead of Stress Creating SituationsWhat do I mean by that? As an example, If you know you're going to have a conversation with someone who is a problem, plan that conversation and the circumstances related to that conversation. Rehearse in mind how you are going to deal with that person or situation. Create a mind video story where you act out what you will do, say, and feel. Play that video in the theatre of mind. Make the video mind story big, bold, and in full Technicolor.Once you have the plan in place and you created and played your video mind story, write down an affirmation that supports that video mind story.For example, if a co-worker is a problem you've created a video story about how you will deal with that co-worker on a day to day basis or in a particular situation. The affirmation would be something like, “I choose to develop the strategies I created in that video mind story. I choose to apply those strategies in circumstances where I have contact with the individual I have a problem with.The magic two words are, “I choose”. Before going into an interaction with that person. revisit the video story. It only takes a couple of seconds to do that. Then, reread the affirmation you have written down. This will help ensure you are emotionally prepared and mentally ready to deal with whatever comes up. Idea Number 3: Take 1 to 2 Minute Breathing BreaksI recommend you apply deep breathing early and often. Breathe in for the count of five, hold briefly for a second or so, and breathe out for the count of five. That can be four seconds, five seconds, or six seconds. The important thing is to breathe diaphragmatically and rhythmically with a slow comfortable in breath, a brief hold for a second or so, and a slow out breath. As you breathe out, smile and say peace. Apply deep breathing for 30 seconds to two minutes as time and circumstances allow.Doing this simple breath exercise several times a day will help keep your stress level down.
