On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we travel back in time and talk about one of the most famous of the Founding Fathers: Thomas Jefferson. To some historians, Jefferson was the most important member of the revolution. He drafted the constitution on his own, and his writings inspired troops and helped forge a government. He rose in rank from a lawyer to Secretary of State and then from Vice President to the 3rd President of the United States. But, he was a man of his times. He owned over 600 slaves, and most historians say he raped his 14 year old slave Sally Hemmings and forced her to father 6 slave children with him. Jefferson was born to wealth on his father’s plantation. He had an amazing education and was truly a renaissance man, dabbling in everything from music to architecture and even paleontology and of course politics. He became a lawyer and politician just as the Revolutionary war broke out, and he became the writer and mouthpiece for the Congressional Congress. He fought for religious freedoms, built the University of Virginia, and did many amazing things. He also almost made the newly formed America go nearly bankrupt, said the worst things about blacks you can imagine, and let’s not forget the raping the slaves thing. In this episode, I again speak to the Superintendent of Mission Public Schools to get some answers about what back to school will look like for students across grade levels. Mostly this episode is intended to help parents who are still trying to decide whether or not to send their children back to in-class instruction or whether another option is the correct choice for their family at this time. The different options (regular school placement, distributed learning and home schooling) are defined, discusses and weighed out a little with pros and cons. We discuss the learning groups (cohorts, bubbles whatever you're calling it!) and what function they truly serve. If you want to know why the high school is in-class one day a week and why it isn't your youngest children that you should be the most worried about then listen now! We even discuss teachers in the 1900s hint: just like you CANNOT show up to school with the sniffles today, you didn't want to show up with dirty fingernails back then! Muharram is the Islamic New Year, or Hijrah, and is celebrated on the first day of the month Muharram. Hijrah is celebrated as New Year as it represents Muhammad's journey from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. Even though there aren't any specific rituals you have to do on Hijrah, Muslims like to use it as a time to reflect and anticipate the coming year. In the Islamic religion, there are 4 sacred months. Muharram is one of those 4 months and it means “forbidden”, forbidden from warfare and fighting. This holiday is part of the Islamic lunar calendar, which is based on the moon instead of the sun and it usually falls around August. This year, in 2020, it is on August 20th. Muslims also observe the 10th day of Muharram known as the Day of Ashura. While Ashura means different things to the two main groups of Islam, the Sunni, and Shia, it is still one of the very important holidays in the Islamic religion. For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is a holiday of reflection and peace. On this day, they celebrate Moses liberating the Israelites from Egypt when Moses parts the Red Sea so they could cross. On this day, many maintain silence and fasting for the whole day. If they choose not to fast, they will eat a dessert called Ashure, or Noah's Pudding because Ashura is also the day that Noah left his ark after the Genesis Flood ended. For Shia Muslims, Ashura is a much more solemn holiday commemorating the death of Hussein Ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, during the War of Karbala in 680 AD. In memory of him, Shia Muslims across the globe participate in various activities that include: reading the text called Ziyarat Ashura which is about Hussein Ibn Ali, reenacting the War of Karbala, and having parades wearing black clothes and beating their chest. COVID19 has led to speculation that the pandemic could be the catalyst for the arrival of the cashless society. Stay-at-home measures and pandemic fears have led to an increase in online shopping. At the same time, some brick and mortar merchants are refusing cash as a defense against germs. But consumers haven’t abandoned cash just yet. Rachel Huber, senior analyst in payments at Javelin Strategies and Research completed a study on the health of cash for ATM provider Cardtronics in late 2019. Given the pandemic, the company thought that she should do another survey to see how the pandemic changed things. In our conversation, we talk about what happen to cash usage, who uses cash, and the growth of contactless payments. Some of the findings were counterintuitive. As British Columbia prepares to open schools to part-time, in class learning, I speak to the Superintendent of Mission Public Schools about sending children back to school. We had a great interview with Dave Kusek (instructor at Berklee School of Music amongst other accomplishments), the co-author of book The Future of Music: Manifesto for the Digital Music Revolution. Some of the subject matter we touched on during the interview included how technology has totally changed the current state of music industry in the past 10 - 15 years, how hard working independent artists currently have some of the most optimal chances to distribute, promote and sell their music to the masses due to things like internet innovations (Web 2.0, self-distribution options for music & content, etc.), where the current music industry should change to be both profitable and give music to the people they way they want, reaching out for niche audiences (esp. in the different genres of Black Music) and more!
