04/14/24 Sunday Morning Message
In today's study, we finish up the 9th chapter of John, and we see how the story of the man who was born blind evolved. He schooled the religious leaders by reminding them that God doesn't hear sinners, and then he told them Jesus couldn't have done anything unless He was of God. He said this because Jesus is the One who opened his eyes. Jesus met back up with this man, and revealed His identity to him, and at that point, the man worshipped Him. Then Jesus rebuked the Pharisees, and they didn't take it well. In our Q&A segment, we gave an answer to a really good question: Why do you believe so many people today are denying that there is a devil? What do you believe is behind this? You need to hear this study, so give it a listen today!
Verse by verse study through the book of John Chapter Nine and Verse Thirty One
Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at the well at noon. What happens next completely changes her life forever. Luther House of Study's Dr. Chris Croghan sits down with Kiri Haugen and Mason Van Essen to discuss the significance the time of day plays in this story. When you hear the passage, pay attention to Jesus' responses to the woman. It may sound harsh, but—as you'll hear Dr. Croghan teach—you need to be named a sinner in order for the promise of forgiveness to take hold. What's completely unexpected to the woman focused on living under the law, is the revelation that God is a giver, not a demander. So much so that she immediately leaves what she was doing and begins to preach. SING TO THE LORDTo understand the importance of hymnody in the Lutheran church, Lars Olson and I sit down with Zachary Brockhoff each week to discuss the lectionary's hymns, their meaning and history, and how the music preaches the Gospel. We hope you enjoy this new venture!
John 20:19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” 24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

March 15, 2020 (John 8:1-11) This is the famous story of Jesus' encounter with the woman caught in adultery, and the men who wanted her punished. How come whenever fundamentalists show up to a party to talk about sinners, someone always gets stoned? Jesus shows us. He is what God wants to say about sinners, and He corrects what we thought we understood about sin.
