Bible StudyDon't just take our word for it . . . take His! We would encourage you to spend time examining the following Scriptures that shaped this sermon: Romans 5:1-11, Matthew 9:9-13, Mark 2:14-22, Luke 5:27-35, I Corinthians 11:29-32, Hosea 5:15-6:6Sermon Outline Jesus, friend of sinners, calls Matthew to follow Him. Being a sinner was the only qualification Matthew had for joining the disciples The only thing that qualifies us to be followers of Jesus is that we are sinners who need grace. Why does Jesus eat with tax collectors and sinners? Jesus is the incarnation of God's mercy. Following Jesus is not heroic, it's surrender. Jesus still eats with sinners today. No one is worthy to come to the Communion Table Jesus has made us worthy by His sacrifice Consider the worth or real value of Jesus' sacrifice for us.Sermon Questions In the choice of Matthew, what is surprising or offensive to you? How does Jesus respond to the Pharisees' indirect criticism? What would have been different about your life if Jesus had come only to call "righteous" people instead of "sinners"? Are you willing to share openly about those things in your life that qualify you to follow Jesus? Does anything disqualify you from following Jesus? How would you respond if someone said you were unworthy to come to the Communion Table? When you receive communion what helps you to focus on the real worth and value of what Jesus did for you on the cross? Does anything distract you as you receive communion?Questions?Do you have a question about today's sermon? The subject of our study this weekend is a sinner turned saint! His name is Levi son of Alphaeus, but he is better known as Matthew, a name that was presumable given him by Jesus. Levi means “joined” and Matthew means “gift of Yahweh.” We could say that when Levi joined the band of Jesus' disciples, he became Matthew, a gift that God used to bless others. Jesus transformed Matthew and Matthew wanted the same for his friends. Matthew wanted his friends to come to know and follow Jesus. Do you want the same?

This message continues our series through the Gospel of Mark. We explore a story where Jesus finds Himself among people of questionable reputation. Yet this scene is far more than a moment of social tension—it is deeply theological, revealing the heart of God's kingdom and what life looks like when grace welcomes sinners to the table. Scripture Referenced: Mark 2:13-17

Jesus Friend of Sinners | Mark 2:13–17Jesus still meets people right where they are. In this service, we worship the risen King and dive into Mark 2:13–17, where Jesus calls Levi (Matthew), eats with “tax collectors and sinners,” and shows us what grace really looks like. Pastor unpacks why large crowds followed Jesus, what it means that He's a friend of sinners (without winking at sin), and how mercy (not empty ritual) is God's heart for you. If you've ever felt unworthy, this message is for you. Key TakeawaysJesus calls unlikely people (like Levi) and gives them a new identity and purpose.God is unbelievably patient with sinners and utterly intolerant of sin.“Mercy, not sacrifice”: the point of religion is a real relationship with Jesus. You can come to Jesus as you are and He will not leave you as you were. The church grows because God wants more people saved. We keep making room. ScripturesMark 2:13–17; Matthew 9:9–13; Luke 5:27–32; John 8:1–11; Romans 3:23–24; Hosea 6:6; Isaiah 55:6–7; Psalm 1; Proverbs 11:24–25; Matthew 7:3–5

Friends! Have you gotten my new book It's Time to Talk to Your Kids About Porn yet? If not, listen to today's guest give a review of the book at the end of the podcast and be inspired to get your copy right here today! I met today's guest, Aubrey McGowan, at a home school mom conference called Wild and Free! What a fun way to meet this guy. Aubrey and his wife Jen are tremendous musicians, and they have performed at many of the Wild and Free conferences I have been a part of. Aubrey is also creative in other ways: he's a passionate communicator and a gifted writer. In today's episode we are talking about Aubrey's new book, Filter the Noise: how to Hear God's Voice in a Culture of Chaos. We have so much noise in our life--the noise of the physical world, the noise of the digital world and the inner noise—those voices in our head that so often tell us things that aren't true. Aubrey asks the question: what does Christ say to this? While the world tells us we always need more, Christ tells us He is enough. Aubrey shares with us the practice he outlines in the book that can help us filter the noise we don't want or need in this life. But Aubrey reminds us: “The power is in Jesus, not in the practice” This practice is a way to point people to Jesus Friends, this is a longer than usual episode, but when Aubrey gets fired up he brings the wisdom and the fire and I don't want to stop him! So sit down, grab a cup of coffee and be inspired by what Aubrey shares here. Let's go!
