Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him,"If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."They answered him, "We are descendants of Abrahamand have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, 'You will become free'?"Jesus answered them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains. So if the Son frees you, then you will truly be free.I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are trying to kill me,because my word has no room among you.I tell you what I have seen in the Father's presence;then do what you have heard from the Father."They answered and said to him, "Our father is Abraham."Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works of Abraham. But now you are trying to kill me,a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God;Abraham did not do this. You are doing the works of your father!"So they said to him, "We were not born of fornication. We have one Father, God."Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me,for I came from God and am here;I did not come on my own, but he sent me."
John 8:1-11Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him,and he sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a womanwho had been caught in adulteryand made her stand in the middle. They said to him,“Teacher, this woman was caughtin the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?”They said this to test him,so that they could have some charge to bring against him.Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. But when they continued asking him,he straightened up and said to them,“Let the one among you who is without sinbe the first to throw a stone at her.”Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. Then Jesus straightened up and said to her,“Woman, where are they?Has no one condemned you?”She replied, “No one, sir.”Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you.Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”

Sunday, April 6th, 2025, Homily (John 8:1-11) by Fr. David Dufresne
Jesus said to the Pharisees:"I am going away and you will look for me,but you will die in your sin.Where I am going you cannot come."So the Jews said,"He is not going to kill himself, is he,because he said, 'Where I am going you cannot come'?"He said to them, "You belong to what is below,I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but I do not belong to this world. That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM,you will die in your sins."So they said to him, "Who are you?"Jesus said to them, "What I told you from the beginning.I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the world."They did not realize that he was speaking to them of the Father. So Jesus said to them,"When you lift up the Son of Man,then you will realize that I AM,and that I do nothing on my own,but I say only what the Father taught me.The one who sent me is with me.He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him."Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him.
Welcome to Rise Up with Fr. Jonathan Meyer. In today's powerful Lenten reflection on John 8:21–30, we're reminded of Jesus' words: “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM.” What happened once on Calvary happens again at every Mass—the Body and Blood of Christ are lifted up for us to behold. Do we recognize Him? Do we believe He is truly present? Let this be a wake-up call to see Jesus in the Eucharist, to realize He is, and to never take for granted the moment the Son of Man is lifted before our eyes.
Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world.Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will havethe light of life." So the Pharisees said to him, "You testifyon your own behalf, so your testimony cannot be verified."Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I do testifyon my own behalf, my testimony can be verified, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going. You judge by appearances, but I do not judge anyone. And even if I should judge, my judgement is valid, because I am not alone, but it is I and the Fatherwho sent me. Even in your law it is writtenthat the testimony of two men can be verified.I testify on my behalf and so does the Father who sent me."So they said to him, "Where is your father?" Jesus answered,"You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me,you would know my Father also." He spoke these wordswhile teaching in the treasury in the temple area. But no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
John 8:42–46[42] Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. [43] Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. [44] You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. [45] But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. [46] Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? (ESV)
Monday of the Fifth Week of LentJohn 8:12-20Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world.Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will havethe light of life." So the Pharisees said to him, "You testifyon your own behalf, so your testimony cannot be verified."

46 Which of you shall convict me of sin? If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me?Quis ex vobis arguet me de peccato? Si veritatem dico vobis, quare non creditis mihi? 47 He that is of God, heareth the words of God. Therefore you hear them not, because you are not of God.Qui ex Deo est, verba Dei audit. Propterea vos non auditis, quia ex Deo non estis. 48 The Jews therefore answered, and said to him: Do not we say well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?Responderunt ergo Judaei, et dixerunt ei : Nonne bene dicimus nos quia Samaritanus es tu, et daemonium habes? 49 Jesus answered: I have not a devil: but I honour my Father, and you have dishonoured me.Respondit Jesus : Ego daemonium non habeo : sed honorifico Patrem meum, et vos inhonorastis me. 50 But I seek not my own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.Ego autem non quaero gloriam meam : est qui quaerat, et judicet. 51 Amen, amen I say to you: If any man keep my word, he shall not see death for ever.Amen, amen dico vobis : si quis sermonem meum servaverit, mortem non videbit in aeternum. 52 The Jews therefore said: Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest: If any man keep my word, he shall not taste death for ever.Dixerunt ergo Judaei : Nunc cognovimus quia daemonium habes. Abraham mortuus est, et prophetae; et tu dicis : Si quis sermonem meum servaverit, non gustabit mortem in aeternum. 53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead. Whom dost thou make thyself?Numquid tu major es patre nostro Abraham, qui mortuus est? et prophetae mortui sunt. Quem teipsum facis? 54 Jesus answered: If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom you say that he is your God.Respondit Jesus : Si ego glorifico meipsum, gloria mea nihil est : est Pater meus, qui glorificat me, quem vos dicitis quia Deus vester est, 55 And you have not known him, but I know him. And if I shall say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar. But I do know him, and do keep his word.et non cognovistis eum : ego autem novi eum. Et si dixero quia non scio eum, ero similis vobis, mendax. Sed scio eum, et sermonem ejus servo. 56 Abraham your father rejoiced that he might see my day: he saw it, and was glad.Abraham pater vester exsultavit ut videret diem meum : vidit, et gavisus est. 57 The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?Dixerunt ergo Judaei ad eum : Quinquaginta annos nondum habes, et Abraham vidisti? 58 Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.Dixit eis Jesus : Amen, amen dico vobis, antequam Abraham fieret, ego sum. 59 They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.Tulerunt ergo lapides, ut jacerent in eum : Jesus autem abscondit se, et exivit de templo.St John shows us the growing hatred of the Sanhedrin. Those who ought to have recognized in Jesus the Son of God, greater than Abraham and the Prophets, because He is eternal, disregarded the meaning of His words. They insulted our Lord Jesus Christ, the Messias, whom they declared to be possessed by a devil, a blasphemer, whom they would stone to death.
I Am the Light of the World | John 8 by Osterville Baptist Church
12 Again therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying: I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life.Iterum ergo locutus est eis Jesus, dicens : Ego sum lux mundi : qui sequitur me, non ambulat in tenebris, sed habebit lumen vitae. 13 The Pharisees therefore said to him: Thou givest testimony of thyself: thy testimony is not true.Dixerunt ergo ei pharisaei : Tu de teipso testimonium perhibes; testimonium tuum non est verum. 14 Jesus answered, and said to them: Although I give testimony of myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go: but you know not whence I come, or whither I go.Respondit Jesus, et dixit eis : Et si ego testimonium perhibeo de meipso, verum est testimonium meum : quia scio unde veni et quo vado; vos autem nescitis unde venio aut quo vado. 15 You judge according to the flesh: I judge not any man.Vos secundum carnem judicatis : ego non judico quemquam; 16 And if I do judge, my judgment is true: because I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.et si judico ego, judicium meum verum est, quia solus non sum : sed ego et qui misit me, Pater. 17 And in your law it is written, that the testimony of two men is true.Et in lege vestra scriptum est, quia duorum hominum testimonium verum est. 18 I am one that give testimony of myself: and the Father that sent me giveth testimony of me.Ego sum qui testimonium perhibeo de meipso, et testimonium perhibet de me qui misit me, Pater. 19 They said therefore to him: Where is thy Father? Jesus answered: Neither me do you know, nor my Father: if you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also.Dicebant ergo ei : Ubi est Pater tuus? Respondit Jesus : Neque me scitis, neque Patrem meum : si me sciretis, forsitan et Patrem meum sciretis. 20 These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.Haec verba locutus est Jesus in gazophylacio, docens in templo : et nemo apprehendit eum, quia necdum venerat hora ejus.

John 8:37-47. Preached Sunday, March 30, 2025.
In John 8:48-59 we find a dramatic confrontation between Jesus and the religious leaders that culminates in one of His clearest declarations of deity: "Before Abraham was, I AM." The Jewish leaders understand His claim—That He is declaring Himself to be God—and attempt to stone Him.In this sermon we'll explore Christ's promise that “if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death,” the true nature of sin, and why Jesus must be truly God and truly man in order to accomplish our salvation.
So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
Where do you need Jesus’s mercy today? In this guided Lectio Divina meditation, we step into John 8:2-11, where Jesus responds to a woman caught in adultery—not with condemnation, but with grace. The Pharisees and religious leaders try to trap Him, but Jesus, full of wisdom and compassion, turns everything upside down. He silences the accusers, extends mercy, and invites the woman into a new way of life. As you move through this Scripture meditation, you’ll hear the passage multiple times—first as an observer, then as someone in the temple, and finally, as the woman herself. As you reflect, consider:✨ Where do you need Jesus’s mercy in your life?✨ How is God inviting you to walk forward in righteousness? Take a deep breath, settle in, and allow Jesus’s mercy to meet you right where you are. Get your free Lent Journal here. Here are some additional helpful links: Download your free LENT guide here. All the people came to him, and he sat down and began to teach them. The experts in the law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught committing adultery. They made her stand in front of them and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery. In the law Moses commanded us to stone to death such women. What then do you say?” (Now they were asking this in an attempt to trap him, so that they could bring charges against him.) Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger. When they persisted in asking him, he stood up straight and replied, “Whoever among you is guiltless may be the first to throw a stone at her.” Then he bent over again and wrote on the ground. Now when they heard this, they began to drift away one at a time, starting with the older ones, until Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up straight and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” She replied, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you either. Go, and from now on do not sin any more. Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.
In yet another confrontation with the religious leaders, Jesus makes two remarkable claims - Each highlighted by Jesus' words "Truly, truly I say to you." In the first, Jesus declares that if anyone keeps His word, they will never see death. In the second, He says "before Abraham was, I am."In this sermon on John 8:48-59 we will consider what these two statements have to teach us about sin, salvation, and the deity of Christ. This sermon was preached at Legacy Reformed Baptist Church in East Grand Forks, MN. In John chapter eight, some Jewish people are caught up in an argument about who Jesus is. Some said He was born in fornication, others said He was a Samaritan or demon-possessed. Let's see how Christ responds to these allegations.
