by Elder Chris McCool, Pastor (preached on May 18, 2025) In the sermon today, we ask the question, “Has the devil ever been your father?” The answer we most often find in the religious world is that there was a time when the devil was indeed our father, but through the exercise of our wills...

As the light of the world, Jesus grants us true sight. Jesus reveals the Father, so that we can rightly understand who God is. Jesus exposes our sin, and thus lovingly invites us to confess and to repent of our sins. Jesus leads us out of darkness, so that we have the hope that one day all will be bright and darkness will be no more. When we encounter the light of the world, we will say: "I once was blind, but now I see."

The Truth Will Set You Free — John 8:31–37In this message, Pastor Mike unpacks what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus. Drawing from John 8, we're reminded that genuine disciples abide in Christ's word, are set free by truth, and must understand their spiritual slavery. True freedom isn't found in self-expression, but in submission to God's design. Jesus shows us that it's only when we acknowledge our bondage to sin that we can receive the freedom He offers. And that freedom is not abstract—it's relational: “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Standing before God, her sin naked and exposed, the woman caught in adultery heard these words from the Judge: "I do not condemn you. Go, and sin no more". This woman deserved to be stoned, but the only one with the absolute right to cast the first stone offered grace instead. This is the experience of all those who have truly seen the light of Christ!

SUMMARY “The following section of scripture (chapters 8 to 10) can be described with two words: Radical confrontation. They ask Him what should be done to her. He asks the one who has no sin to cast the first stone. Slowly, all the men leave. He then explains there is no testimony against her and sends her away, telling her to “sin no more.” This opens a discussion about testimony concerning Jesus, including His own words and works, along with the prophecy and proclamations of His Father. He teaches eternal life with the Father and that unbelievers will die in their sins for the devil is their father! The men try to claim Abraham as their father, but Jesus enrages them when He says, “Before Abraham was, I am”. Things are heating up between Jesus and the Jewish leaders. He is teaching in their temple and embarrassing them with His wisdom. In the case of the adulterous women, the men's motives are faulty, and they leave in shame. But the guilty woman is given a pardon by the mercy of the Lord. Jesus has proven His glory and His right to be obeyed, and those who will not believe will die in their sins. To claim God as Father is to follow Jesus. We must understand this. To follow the world is to have the devil as our father. We belong to whomever we follow. Jesus existed before all men, is glorified as holy, and is worthy to be praised. Kind Father, we know You show mercy to those who are sorrowful for their sins. Like the adulterous woman told to sin no more, we call upon your grace to free us from our sins, and we vow to pursue holiness. We acknowledge Your Son as the Light of the world, and the One who was lifted up to save us from sin and darkness. He is eternal and He is holy, and reverence to You is shown through belief in Jesus and obeying His teachings. We commit to Him as our Guide and to You as our only Father. Thought Questions: - Beyond the fact that all witnesses left, why did Jesus send the adulterous woman away unpunished? What does that say about Him? - Jesus said you must continue in His word to be set free from sin. How are you making it a priority to continue in His word? - Can God be your Father if He is not allowed to control your life? Why must you trust and follow Jesus to have God as your Father?

Some versions of John 8 omits the earlier verses. There can be little doubt that they should be included in the record. A woman was brought to the Lord caught in the very act of adultery. Where was the man? It was a set up designed to trap Jesus. The Law of Moses made it very clear that adultery was punishable by stoning. As they persist in goading Jesus he said, “Let the one without sin cast the first stone”. And he stoops down and writes on the earth- most likely he wrote their names in fulfilment of Jeremiah 17 verse 13. One by one they left beginning at the eldest. Finally, the woman was left alone with the Lord and although he condemned her not, she was told to go and sin no more. A discussion follows about Jesus being the light of the world- one of the many Messianic titles that John used. This led on to a discussion regarding origins – our Lord was from God they were murderous liars and in no way children of Abraham. Only truth could set them free. Finally Jesus astounds them with a claim for him to be the entire focus of God's purpose. Abraham understood this and rejoiced in that knowledge.
In a world full of noise, confusion, and half-lit paths, Jesus makes a bold claim: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” This week, we'll look at Jesus' second “I Am” statement in John's Gospel and explore what it means to follow him as he leads us into fullness of life.

Jesus said to the Jews:"Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death."So the Jews said to him,"Now we are sure that you are possessed.Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say,'Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.'Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died?Or the prophets, who died?Who do you make yourself out to be?"Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing;but it is my Father who glorifies me,of whom you say, 'He is our God.'You do not know him, but I know him.And if I should say that I do not know him,I would be like you a liar. But I do know him and I keep his word.Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day;he saw it and was glad."So the Jews said to him,"You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?"Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM."So they picked up stones to throw at him;but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area.
Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him,"If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."They answered him, "We are descendants of Abrahamand have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, 'You will become free'?"Jesus answered them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains. So if the Son frees you, then you will truly be free.I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are trying to kill me,because my word has no room among you.I tell you what I have seen in the Father's presence;then do what you have heard from the Father."They answered and said to him, "Our father is Abraham."Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works of Abraham. But now you are trying to kill me,a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God;Abraham did not do this. You are doing the works of your father!"So they said to him, "We were not born of fornication. We have one Father, God."Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me,for I came from God and am here;I did not come on my own, but he sent me."
Sunday, April 6th, 2025, Homily (John 8:1-11) by Fr. David Dufresne
Jesus said to the Pharisees:"I am going away and you will look for me,but you will die in your sin.Where I am going you cannot come."So the Jews said,"He is not going to kill himself, is he,because he said, 'Where I am going you cannot come'?"He said to them, "You belong to what is below,I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but I do not belong to this world. That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM,you will die in your sins."So they said to him, "Who are you?"Jesus said to them, "What I told you from the beginning.I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the world."They did not realize that he was speaking to them of the Father. So Jesus said to them,"When you lift up the Son of Man,then you will realize that I AM,and that I do nothing on my own,but I say only what the Father taught me.The one who sent me is with me.He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him."Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him.
Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world.Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will havethe light of life." So the Pharisees said to him, "You testifyon your own behalf, so your testimony cannot be verified."Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I do testifyon my own behalf, my testimony can be verified, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going. You judge by appearances, but I do not judge anyone. And even if I should judge, my judgement is valid, because I am not alone, but it is I and the Fatherwho sent me. Even in your law it is writtenthat the testimony of two men can be verified.I testify on my behalf and so does the Father who sent me."So they said to him, "Where is your father?" Jesus answered,"You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me,you would know my Father also." He spoke these wordswhile teaching in the treasury in the temple area. But no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle. They said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?”They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”She replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.”

Where do you need Jesus’s mercy today? In this guided Lectio Divina meditation, we step into John 8:2-11, where Jesus responds to a woman caught in adultery—not with condemnation, but with grace. The Pharisees and religious leaders try to trap Him, but Jesus, full of wisdom and compassion, turns everything upside down. He silences the accusers, extends mercy, and invites the woman into a new way of life. As you move through this Scripture meditation, you’ll hear the passage multiple times—first as an observer, then as someone in the temple, and finally, as the woman herself. All the people came to him, and he sat down and began to teach them. The experts in the law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught committing adultery. They made her stand in front of them and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery. In the law Moses commanded us to stone to death such women. What then do you say?” (Now they were asking this in an attempt to trap him, so that they could bring charges against him.) Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger. When they persisted in asking him, he stood up straight and replied, “Whoever among you is guiltless may be the first to throw a stone at her.” Then he bent over again and wrote on the ground. Now when they heard this, they began to drift away one at a time, starting with the older ones, until Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up straight and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” She replied, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you either.
