He sets us free from the penalty, practice, and power of sin!
Pastor Dane Ortlund preaches on John 8:12-30
Audio only:
Numbers 19-20; Proverbs 9-10; John 8
John 8:31-58 focuses on Jesus's claim to be the truth that sets people free, contrasted with the Jews' claims of freedom based on their lineage and religious practices. Jesus argues that true disciples abide in His word and are freed from the slavery of sin, while those who reject Him are enslaved to sin and ultimately to death. The passage culminates in Jesus declaring His eternal existence, stating "Before Abraham was, I AM," further emphasizing His divine nature and authority. 1 And Jesus went unto mount Olivet.Jesus autem perrexit in montem Oliveti : 2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him, and sitting down he taught them.et diluculo iterum venit in templum, et omnis populus venit ad eum, et sedens docebat eos. 3 And the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman taken in adultery: and they set her in the midst,Adducunt autem scribae et pharisaei mulierem in adulterio deprehensam : et statuerunt eam in medio, 4 And said to him: Master, this woman was even now taken in adultery.et dixerunt ei : Magister, haec mulier modo deprehensa est in adulterio. 5 Now Moses in the law commanded us to stone such a one. But what sayest thou?In lege autem Moyses mandavit nobis hujusmodi lapidare. Tu ergo quid dicis? 6 And this they said tempting him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bowing himself down, wrote with his finger on the ground.Hoc autem dicebant tentantes eum, ut possent accusare eum. Jesus autem inclinans se deorsum, digito scribebat in terra. 7 When therefore they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said to them: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.Cum ergo perseverarent interrogantes eum, erexit se, et dixit eis : Qui sine peccato est vestrum, primus in illam lapidem mittat. 8 And again stooping down, he wrote on the ground.Et iterum se inclinans, scribebat in terra. 9 But they hearing this, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst.Audientes autem unus post unum exibant, incipientes a senioribus : et remansit solus Jesus, et mulier in medio stans. 10 Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee?Erigens autem se Jesus, dixit ei : Mulier, ubi sunt qui te accusabant? nemo te condemnavit? 11 Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more.Quae dixit : Nemo, Domine. Dixit autem Jesus : Nec ego te condemnabo : vade, et jam amplius noli peccare. The guilty woman. Clemency of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The freedom we want The freedom we don't realise we've lost The way to be truly free
Welcome to the Daily Disciple Podcast. As daily disciples, we seek to adore and follow Jesus, our teacher, into the abundant life that he offers. Because we find Jesus irresistible, fascinating, and incredibly practical, we want to be students of his scripture. Today's episode is found in John 8 "Sin and Stones."

Packinghouse's Sunday morning worship service from March 1, 2026. John 8:1–11 — Why Women Suffer More Than Men Guest pastor Ken Graves opens by thanking the church and urging gratitude for faithful leadership, then uses the Good Samaritan to picture the church as an “inn” where hurting people are cared for and healed by the Word and the Spirit. In John 8, he walks through the woman caught in adultery and exposes the ugliness of the setup—how the accusers exploit a woman to trap Jesus, while conspicuously leaving the man out. He explains that the law required eyewitnesses and that the whole scene reveals the hypocrisy and cruelty of religious wolves, contrasting them with Jesus' calm authority and protective mercy. Ken frames the message around why women suffer more: physical vulnerability, deeper emotional capacity, and the longing to be loved that can be exploited in a fallen world, tying it back to Genesis 3's “sorrow” and brokenness under sin. The turning point is Jesus' quiet power—He writes, disarms the accusers, and then speaks to her with dignity: “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more,” showing both mercy and truth. He ends personally, sharing his mother's story of abuse and exploitation to underline that Christ rescues the guilty and the wounded alike, then calls men to stand up and protect, and invites anyone ready to surrender to Jesus to receive forgiveness. - Ken Graves - Sunday, March 1, 2026
21 Again therefore Jesus said to them: I go, and you shall seek me, and you shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come.Dixit ergo iterum eis Jesus : Ego vado, et quaeretis me, et in peccato vestro moriemini. Quo ego vado, vos non potestis venire. 22 The Jews therefore said: Will he kill himself, because he said: Whither I go, you cannot come?Dicebant ergo Judaei : Numquid interficiet semetipsum, quia dixit : Quo ego vado, vos non potestis venire? 23 And he said to them: You are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world.Et dicebat eis : Vos de deorsum estis, ego de supernis sum. Vos de mundo hoc estis, ego non sum de hoc mundo. 24 Therefore I said to you, that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin.Dixi ergo vobis quia moriemini in peccatis vestris : si enim non credideritis quia ego sum, moriemini in peccato vestro. 25 They said therefore to him: Who art thou? Jesus said to them: The beginning, who also speak unto you.Dicebant ergo ei : Tu quis es? Dixit eis Jesus : Principium, qui et loquor vobis. 26 Many things I have to speak and to judge of you. But he that sent me, is true: and the things I have heard of him, these same I speak in the world.Multa habeo de vobis loqui, et judicare; sed qui me misit, verax est; et ego quae audivi ab eo, haec loquor in mundo. 27 And they understood not, that he called God his Father.Et non cognoverunt quia Patrem ejus dicebat Deum. 28 Jesus therefore said to them: When you shall have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know, that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father hath taught me, these things I speak:Dixit ergo eis Jesus : Cum exaltaveris Filium hominis, tunc cognoscetis quia ego sum, et a meipso facio nihil, sed sicut docuit me Pater, haec loquor : 29 And he that sent me, is with me, and he hath not left me alone: for I do always the things that please him.et qui me misit, mecum est, et non reliquit me solum : quia ego quae placita sunt ei, facio semper.

Jesus declared himself the Light of the World—claiming to be the very presence of God who led Israel in the wilderness. In John 9, he proved it by giving sight to a man born blind. This miracle exposed hearts: the blind man grew in faith and worship, while the religious leaders hardened in pride. Our response to Jesus as the Light of the World determines whether we experience transformation or remain in darkness.

Send me a Text Message! In this episode we will hear Jesus say, "If you abide in my word, you will know the truth and the truth will set you free." If you dwell in, and get connected to my word; if you let your soul saturate in my word, you are truly my disciples. You can't be an apprentice of Jesus if you don't live in his Word; the words of the WORD.I don't think I've noticed before how almost every chapter, John in his words or Jesus in his words and his example bring us back to the importance of the words of God. We need more than bread to thrive. We need every word that comes from the mouth of God. Right? We need to listen, learn and lean in. It starts with listening, but if that's where it ends, we're lost. It's not enough to listen, we need to lean in!

Send me a Text Message! We live in a world filled with darkness. And into this world of darkness Jesus came. In John 8:12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life." Like the worship song sings, "There is a light, his name is Jesus. He's the light of the world. But here's the amazing thing. Don't miss this thing. Of all Jesus' I am statements, six of them only apply to him. There's only one "I am" statement where Jesus says, and so are you. He says, "I am the light of the world. And so are you." Jesus is the light of the world, and so are you!
John 8:48-5448 The Jews answered him, “Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.
So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
This midweek prayer is an invitation to pause and return to Jesus, the Light of the World. This short midweek prayer invites you to pause, breathe deeply, and refocus your heart and mind on Jesus, who says, “I am the light of the world.” Drawing from John 8:12, this prayer creates space to name the places that feel dark, confusing, or hidden—both in the world around us and in our own lives. In Scripture, light is a sign of God’s goodness, presence, and life. Jesus tells us that when we follow Him, we do not have to walk in darkness, because His light leads to life. This prayer invites you to ask Jesus to be light in the places you’re carrying—and to listen for how He may be inviting you to reflect His light through the way you love and live. Take a few quiet minutes to refocus your heart on Jesus and pray along as you seek His light in and through your life. Send me a Text Message! In this episode, I'm going to talk about the beauty of the sound of dropping stones. You will hear it, in your heart, as you listen to this episode, the sound of dropping stones. Did you know that you can recognize by a sound, whether or not you are following Jesus? Do you know what sound you hear when you start living and loving and becoming like Jesus? It's the sound of stones dropping.I used to have this rock that I kept in my office. It was large enough to write on it the words, "first stone." It was a reminder to me of the fact that I can't throw stones at people who have blown it, if I don't want stones thrown at me when I blow it. And when I blow it, when I make those choices I wish I could undo, I so love to hear the sound of stones dropping.
Today is a special day for me as I’m spending the day with my father as he celebrates his 99th birthday! 99 full years of life since his birth, thus tomorrow begins his centennial year! Most of us underestimate the power of God's presence in our lives — and that underestimation limits our potential for miracles. What if embracing God's ability to do the impossible could change everything? In this episode, we reveal how a simple shift in perspective—trusting in God's light—can transform your walk from darkness to purpose. Discover how Jesus' declaration, "I am the light of the world," isn't just poetic—it's a declaration of life, guidance, and wisdom for every believer. This episode is perfect for anyone feeling overwhelmed, confused, or longing for clarity—an invitation to see differently and walk confidently in the dark, knowing the Light of the world is with you.
Send me a Text Message!Who are your untouchables? We spent a couple of weeks at Calvary talking about being bridge-builders. I think one of the most vital gaps we need to bridge today is the gap between you and whoever your untouchables are because we still haveuntouchables today, don't we? How long has it been since you went out of your way to be around the friend who betrayed you? Has she become untouchable? If someone invited you to go with them to do prison ministry, would you go? Would you sit and talk, share the good news of forgiveness to a child molester? What about those on the other side of whatever political divide is your gap?See the word "judgement" goes with the word "untouchable." In fact the greek word for judgement literally means to seperate. To be judgmental is to seperate, divide and condemn. It's all about building walls instead of bridges. So who are your untouchables?
So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
In this second meditation in our Lent series, I AM: A Lenten Journey with Jesus, we slow down with Jesus’s words in John 8:12:“I am the light of the world.” Jesus makes this declaration during the Feast of Tabernacles, a celebration that remembered how God guided His people through the wilderness with a pillar of fire—a visible light in the darkness. When Jesus speaks these words, He is doing more than offering comfort or guidance. He is revealing who He is: the very presence of God, now shining with and among His people. Light is something we often don’t notice until it’s missing. When life feels confusing, when the path ahead is unclear, or when the weight of the world feels heavy, darkness can feel overwhelming. Jesus’s words meet us right here—not as a distant light shining from above, but as a light who walks with us and leads us toward life. This guided Scripture meditation invites you to reflect on Jesus’s words in two ways. First, you’ll be guided to notice areas in your own life that may feel hidden, uncertain, or shadowed. Then, you’ll turn your attention outward, holding the places in our world where it feels like darkness is winning and listening for the hope Jesus offers there as well. Through several slow readings of John 8:12, you will be guided to listen, reflect, respond, and rest—allowing the truth of Jesus as the Light of the World to shape how you see your life and the world around you. Lent reminds us that we do not have to figure everything out on our own. We are invited to follow the Light, one faithful step at a time. Almost everyone has an opinion on who Jesus is. Some say he was a brilliant teacher, a great prophet, or an ethical role model. The only problem with these ideas is that Jesus never claimed to be any of those things; instead, he insisted - repeatedly - that he is God. Few people accepted his bold claim - that he was the one true God in flesh - was offensive, and some accepted it, while others turned back and no longer followed him. (John 6:66) All month long in February, The Story Church will explore the audacious claims that Jesus made about himself in His own words. These controversial statements will leave us with two choices: to take him at his word and accept he is God, or to reject his divine identity and dismiss him as a fraud.
Two simple words shape so much of our lives: “I am.”“I am alone.” “I am ashamed.” “I am anxious.”These phrases don't just describe how we feel—they begin to define who we believe we are. But what if the most important “I am” in your life isn't yours? In John 8:58, Jesus didn't offer a metaphor—he revealed his identity. He claimed the very name and glory of God. This wasn't symbolism. It was a declaration that he is the eternal Lord who saves. Because of who he is, we are invited to surrender fully to him—no longer defined by self-imposed labels, but by the truth of the great I am.
