Choosing Kindness: Translating the World to the World
The movie's horrific rape scene is grueling to watch. In a car, a terrified prostitute is bound at the wrists and tied to one of the door handles. Already bloodied and beaten, she is viciously sodomized by the man who picked her up by the side of the highway. Somehow, she breaks free and, wild with rage, bravely turns the tables on her attacker. She grabs a gun from her bag and fires bullet after bullet into his chest. The audience, watching breathlessly, feels a rush of sympathy for her. The only problem is, it's not true. The movie is MONSTER, which chronicles the one year killing spree by America's first female serial killer, Aileen Warnous. Actress Charlize Theron won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Warnous “With the movie's sympathetic take, Hollywood has put its boot print on a piece of history. I find the movie's distortions disturbing.” Those words come from Sue Russell, Aileen's biographer, and author of the book “Lethal Intent.” Ms. Russell joins me now on Murder Most Foul.

Overview Today on the podcast, I got to talk to Dr. Sue Russell, Professor of Mission and Contextual Studies at Asbury Seminary. Prior to coming to the Seminary, Dr. Russell was the Associate Professor of Anthropology and the Chair of the Department of Anthropology at Biola University. And before that, she spent 17 years in cross-cultural ministry and field research with Wycliffe Bible Translators in S.E. Asia, where she worked with a committee of national pastors to complete the translation of the whole Bible into the Tagal language. We talk about a lot of things, including her call to ministry and her book Relationshift: Changing the Conversation about Men and Women in the Church. This book focuses on relationships, specifically brother-sister type relationships that are based on love, humility and mutuality, rather than specific roles. We talk about what that means and what that can look like in our context. Let’s listen!

We live in an extremely divided world. What is the solution? In this sermon, pastor Luke explores one of the most significant ideas in the New Testament: siblinghood. Followers of Jesus are called to look at each other through the lens of being sisters and brothers in Christ. Building on Luke 8:19-21, we explored how the New Testament challenges us to shift our thinking. The Western church has tended to neglect the biblical reality of spirits and spiritual warfare. In this Seven Minute Seminary, Dr. Sue Russell uses personal stories to challenge the mistaken dualism that divides the spiritual and physical in our worldview.

Tonight's special guest is Sue Russell from California, an award-winning journalist and author of the newly updated "Lethal Intent," a biography of abused child and serial killer Aileen Wuornos. A truly fascinating work, Sue obviously has worked hard to understand Wuornos and how her childhood, upbringing, adolescence and early life drove her to shooting seven men .. and eventually led her to a death by lethal injection in 2002. Recently Sue was in touch with Todd Matthews of the NamUs.gov organization, who appeared as a SCAN special guest last week. The body of one of Wuornos's victims (she confessed to killing him) has never been found. Todd discovered that this victim's info had not been added into the national database (there are some 40,000 unidentified bodies/sets of remains in the US). Ms Russell will have a lot to share with us owing to her interests and sheer body of work. Her more than 1,500 articles have been published in many of the most prestigious periodicals and well-known newspapers. Sue's past topics include forensic science, wrongful convictions, fingerprint bias, eyewitness identifications, false confessions, animal rights law, gangs, and arson investigations. "Lethal Intent" was just reissued and fully updated as a paperback and eBook. In addition, CUNY Journalism Press will publish "The Illustrated Courtroom: 50 Years of Court Art," co-authored with illustrator Elizabeth Williams, in spring 2014. It features five award-winning artists' work and numerous trials (Jack Ruby, the New York Black Panthers, Charles Manson, Michael Jackson, etc.).
