Aileen Wuornos stood on the shoulder of a Florida highway with a pistol in her bag and a partner at home demanding rent money. Within a year, seven men were dead. She said it started as self defense, that her first client raped her and she fought back. The press called her the Damsel of Death and America's first female serial killer. But was she a victim striking back after a lifetime of abuse, or a killer who got a taste for it and did the rest for money?  This is the story of Aileen Wuornos, told from a childhood of abandonment, beatings, and exploitation through to the Florida killings, her relationship with Tyria Moore, the thumbprint that gave her away, and the trial that sent her to death row. We follow the murder of Richard Mallory, the confession Moore was paid to draw out of her, and the question that has never gone away: how much of Aileen's story is true, and how much was survival, performance, or both? A hard, sad, genuinely complicated true crime story where the word victim applies to more than one side.    Topics Included  who aileen wuornos was and how she became a killer her childhood of abuse, abandonment, and the people who raised her the murder of richard mallory and the self defense claim how her years of sex work on florida's highways shaped the case her relationship with tyria moore and the immunity deal the thumbprint and pawned camera that led to her arrest the trial, the withheld evidence, and the death sentence the victim or villain debate at the heart of the case her final years on death row and her 2002 execution Resources and Further Reading  Aileen Wuornos – Wikipedia Monster (2003) – directed by Patty Jenkins Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer (2003) – directed by Nick Broomfield & Joan Churchill Monster: My True Story - by Aileen Wuornos & Christopher Berry-Dee Host & Show InfoHosts: Kyle Risi & Adam CoxEditor: Giordanno Bottezini Intro Music: Alice in dark WonderlandCommunity & Calls to ActionReview & follow on: Spotify & Apple PodcastsInstagram: @theCompendiumPodcastWebsite: thecompendiumpodcast.comSupport us: Sign up to PatreonShare this episode with a friend! A child abandoned. A life shaped by violence. Long before the headlines, the story of Aileen Wuornos began with a childhood that looked more like survival than innocence.Born in Michigan in 1956, Wuornos entered the world surrounded by instability. Her parents separated before she was born, and by age four she and her brother had been abandoned by their mother and left to be raised by their grandparents. What followed was a childhood marked by poverty, alleged abuse, and isolation.By the time she was barely a teenager, Wuornos was already living a life most adults would struggle to endure. She became pregnant at fourteen after a reported rape and gave birth in a home for unwed mothers, only to have the baby placed for adoption. Soon after, she dropped out of school and was thrown out of her grandparents' home, leaving her to survive on the streets. In this episode, we explore the tragic early years that shaped one of the most infamous figures in true crime. This LGBTQ+ true crime podcast episode looks beyond the headlines to examine the abuse, abandonment, and systemic failures that defined Wuornos's earliest years. It's a haunting chapter of queer history and criminal psychology that forces us to ask difficult questions about trauma, survival, and how society fails the most vulnerable.Hosted by Jordi and Brad, Beers With Queers brings chilling crimes, queer stories, and twisted justice to light, all with a cold one in hand.Press play, grab a drink, and join us as we uncover the darkest corners of LGBTQ+ history. In the mid-1800s, a quiet trail of deaths began to follow a woman across the North East of England. Husbands, children, and relatives seemed to fall suddenly ill, often complaining of stomach pains before dying not long after. At the time, many of these deaths were put down to disease, something that wasn't uncommon in Victorian Britain. But over the years, the number of deaths began to raise eyebrows. Wherever this woman went, tragedy seemed to follow. Families were torn apart, life insurance payouts appeared at just the right moment, and whispers began circulating that these deaths might not have been natural at all. Poisoning, suspicion, and greed were all in the mix.In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, I take a chronological look at the life and crimes of Mary Ann Cotton, one of Britain's earliest known female serial killers. A woman suspected of poisoning multiple husbands, children, and relatives during Britain's Victorian era, Mary Ann Cotton remains one of the most infamous female serial killers in UK history. We'll explore her use of arsenic, the murders that shocked North East England, her trial and execution, and the legacy of suspicion and horror she left behind.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong examines the disturbing case of Mary Ann Cotton, the Victorian-era poisoner who used arsenic to systematically eliminate husbands, stepchildren, and even her own children across nearly two decades in Northeast England. Behind the facade of a grieving widow was a calculating killer who collected insurance payouts and cleared the path to her next financial and romantic opportunity with each death. Candice digs into what drove Mary Ann to view her own families as disposable and how her modus operandi and the time period allowed her to stay under the radar for so long -- killing at least 21 people in the process.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

But despite claims that Elizabeth Báthory tortured and killed as many as 650 girls, some have wondered if the Countess was herself a victim- of one of the most successful disinformation campaigns known to history. So, was Elizabeth Báthory a monster, a victim, or a bit of both? My guest is Shelley Puhak, author of the new book "The Blood Countess: Murder, Betrayal, and the Making of a Monster". She helps us separate fact from fiction as she reexamines the life of Elizabeth Báthory, long labeled one of history's most notorious killers, and unpacks a complex story of power, politics, and how it all led to the making of a "monster". Hi friends, happy Wednesday! The other day I was watching Monster In Law - remember that movie? It starred J Lo, her character falls in love with this dream guy, they get engaged, and everything is perfect until… she meets her mother-in-law.  The mother in law is played by Jane Fonda by the way, she's so good in it. And the whole movie is essentially about how this mother in law makes her future daughter in law's life hell, so she can break up the marriage.  I caught this movie on TV, around mother's day. Which made me laugh, because when most of us think of mother's day, we think of flowers, chocolate, cards that say I love you. But for so many people, that's not the case.  Sometimes moms can be the worst. Which got me thinking… who *are* the worst mothers in history? And what did they do to be considered *so* bad?  Well, let me just say, I wasn't expecting to find *so* many crazy stories. I had to keep it to two. So let's get into it. Welcome to the Dark History of Momsters. Get it? Moms who are Monsters?!  I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History. In this gripping episode, we delve into the chilling and complex story of Mary Ann Cotton, often cited as Britain's first female serial killer. Through an in-depth investigation using diverse sources such as YouTube videos, Wikipedia, true crime articles, and criminologist analyses, we unravel the life and alleged crimes of Mary Ann Cotton. Born Mary Ann Robson in 1832, her life was marked by tragedy, beginning with the death of her father in a mining accident. Her first marriage to William Mowbray set a disturbing pattern, with numerous suspicious deaths of her children and husbands, often resulting in insurance payouts and raising questions about potential arsenic poisoning—a common but hard-to-detect method at the time. Her fourth marriage to Frederick Cotton and subsequent suspicious deaths, including that of his son Charles, finally led to her arrest. Public and legal scrutiny intensified, culminating in a high-profile trial in 1873, where she was ultimately convicted of Charles' murder. Despite maintaining her innocence until her execution, her case exposed serious flaws in Victorian forensic science and life insurance practices. This episode explores not just the narrative of her alleged crimes but also the complex societal pressures and legal loopholes that may have facilitated her actions. As we dissect her motives and the broader implications of her story, we question whether Mary Ann Cotton was a villain shaped by her circumstances or the inherent darkness within her. Considered among the first (and certainly the most prolific) American female serial killers and so-called angels of mercy, Jane Toppan's killing spree went unnoticed for more than fifteen years, as she transitioned from one hospital to another, leaving an unprecedented trail of carnage in her wake. Jane was finally arrested in 1901, after killing the entire family of a man for whom she'd been hired to provide care. The arrest and trial were a sensation, as murder and cruelty were a direct contradiction of the norms and standards long relied upon to define American womanhood. When Jane Toppan began training to be a nurse at Cambridge Hospital in 1885, she was bright, eager, and well-liked by her peers and seemed to form easy bonds with the oldest and most vulnerable patients. What no one knew at the time was, once Jane managed to get time alone with her patients, she began conducting medical experiments by injecting them with various drugs and even going so far as to get into bed with them to hold them close to her as they died from the overdoses she'd administered.Thank you to the amazing Dave White of Bring me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesBoston Globe. 1902.
