Truth Talk Live guest hosted by Alysia Grimes and hear the story of redemtion from Todd Matthews
This week, we're sharing new and notable podcasts from June.First, Todd Matthews was one of the first internet sleuths. He made it his life's mission to give unidentified bodies back their names, and helped create two databases as part of that goal. For years, Todd was haunted by a cold case about two missing boys. One day, one of those boys called him. The new podcast Hello, John Doe has that story. We hear from producer Kate Mishkin about working with Todd, making the show, and how an unexpected tragedy changed its meaning. Plus, these days, it feels like online ads know exactly what we want—new shoes, the latest tech, a nine-acre island off the coast of Nicaragua…Or at least, that was the case for Jayne Gaskin. She was surfing the web one day when she saw a shockingly affordable island for sale. The price was just too good to pass up, so Jayne abandoned a quaint life in the English countryside and moved there with her entire family. While Jayne initially thought that her dreams had come true, not everything was as it seemed. The podcast The Price of Paradise explores the violent consequences of Jayne's decision. Featured in this episode: Hello John Doe, The Price Of Paradise, Who Killed The Video Star: The Story of MTV, Go Touch Grass, MortifiedFor links and more info, head to cbc.ca/podcastplaylist
Among the missing persons cases online sleuth Todd Matthews followed were that of two boys from the same family who vanished 25 years apart. He was shocked to receive a call from a man who thought he might be Phillip Steven Brandenburg, the baby who went missing in 1974.Todd determined Steve Patterson was indeed the John Doe they'd been searching for and helped him reconnect with the mother he never knew. Sandi Brandenburgh claimed the underground adoption was brokered by her husband. Soon after, Franklin Floyd disappeared with Sandi's oldest daughter and lived on the run with her for years. Authorities would not tie all these threads together until three more people were dead or missing. From iHeartMedia, Revelations Entertainment, First and Last Productions, and Neon Hum Media, comes "Hello, John Doe." We hear Todd work with Steve to learn more about where he came from, though the answers are discouraging. It also guides listeners through the connections to the Sharon Marshall and Michael Hughes cases and Todd's efforts to reunite a family torn apart by tragedy.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "HELLO, JOHN DOE" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 10 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE. As a teenager, Todd Matthews had an unusual obsession. He was fascinated by the human remains found along the side of a highway in a small community in rural Kentucky. The woman had been wrapped in a tent bag, and the tale of Tent Girl became a sort of urban legend. He never let go of his obsession with the case. Later in life, while working the assembly line at an auto factory, Todd created an early web page about Tent Girl, asking for the public's help solving the case. That site helped Matthews do what police could not – solve an unsolved murder. And in doing so, it changed the way investigators across the country handle missing person cases today. Todd Matthews went on to create The Doe Network, a nonprofit database of missing persons, unsolved murders and cold cases. His search methods helped shape NamUs, The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. In this episode, Todd describes his first and most famous case, and how the work he started as a teenager sparked a revolution in unsolved murder investigations.

Re-release of Episode 6 Mountain Jane Doe featuring Todd Matthews and Darla Jackson. originally recorded in 2019
Born on the Ides of March 1966 in Wolfville Nova Scotia, Ross Parks attended High School in the Valley then Loyalist College in Belleville Ontario where he completed his Broadcasting Diploma in 1987. Ross spent 28 years in the broadcast/media field in various positions with Radio, TV, Billboard, Jingle Production, Publications and Transit advertising. His passion since his parents bought his first small diecast ‘Datsun' in 1969 was always automotive. Ross collected ‘diecast miniatures' all along, but it wasn't until he picked up a 1990 Brochure for the all-new Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo, that he thought "I want to purchase a real one next time." Next up Ross met an individual in Harrisburg Pennsylvania in 1993 that he worked with thru his Radio Station Jingle Venture, Todd Matthews, who was a real AMC collector. He had restored and kept 5 real cars! Five years later on his birthday (1998) and 8 years of saving, Ross bought his first Z from a car dealer in Vancouver. That black 1992 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo! On September 14th, 2003 he decided to have a party at his home in Halifax for anyone that had a Z car. 22 cars showed up. In April 2004 Ross and two other members incorporated the Atlantic Z Car club Society, a nonprofit which is now comprised of over 600 owners in Atlantic Canada. One of those original house party individuals came to him in the fall of 2006 and said ‘I just got laid off, and we know of many folks in Atlantic Canada with jack stand cars(cars that are in the midst of restoration but likely will never make it to the end) we should start an import company". On January 1st, 2007 ZSportCanada was formed. As per the website, their main goal was to bring in rust-free cars that were complete, assist with shipping, organizing and negotiating with US sellers to make it a very pleasant experience for customers. Since then they have become Canada's largest importer of Datsun vehicles to Canada, with over 439 completed transactions. In the summer of 2020 Ross became sole owner of the Datsun North properties. Almost immediately Ross formed partnerships with a variety of individuals with different skill sets. A fabricator. A mechanic. A body man. A painter. A machinist. An engineer. With these folks, Ross and his team started a restoration of Datsun business across Canada as well. This business is now in full motion with work available for 20 years or more. In 2006 Parks connected with another Z enthusiast who was interested in partnering up on buying a set of buildings near Kentville NS. They purchased an old ‘chicken farm' in North Alton in March of 2012 to store their own vehicles, of which they had 50 between the two of them. However, they had 190 empty spaces, so they completely renovated and turned it into Canada's first ‘Car Farm' called ‘Datsun North'. Since then they have been sold out every year for winter storage space. Ross' plans for 2022 are to work on his own cars and get out of the importing and restoration business and continue to expand and improve the winter storage business. It's quite a journey in a niche market driving great business lessons. Entrepreneurs are the backbone of Canada's econohis. Todd Matthews was the original web sleuth. He began investigating the case of Tent Girl when he was 17 years old. Long before the internet was really a thing. He spent countless hours riding his bike to the library to search microfiche. His father in law was the man who discovered the body back in 1968 and it had gone unidentified until Todd worked for years to figure out just who she was. Todd went on to become the director of NamUs (National Missing and Unidentified Persons System) NamUs helps families and law enforcement find and catalog missing persons and unidentified bodies. His work has rejoined countless families with their lost loved ones. Tonight he talks about how his work to bring one woman to justice changed his whole life. On a special episode of "In-Depth" Jason interviews J. Todd Matthews, former administrator for NamUs and co-founder of The Doe Network. Recorded in October 2019, Jason and Todd discussed Todd's work in the true crime community, and how his help in a very cold case led people to believe that he may be the first cybersleuth in history. The two also discuss Todd's role at The Doe Network, and what he is doing to help the True Crime community post-NamUs. Also discussed is the George Hawkins case, which follows up our latest episode of TCCF on the Hawkins case. NOTE: Todd left NamUs at the beginning of 2020. You may recall, dear Tip-Ster, way back in Episode 8, when Melissa recalled the tragic-yet-amazing story of "Tent Girl," a young woman whose body was found wrapped in a canvas designed to wrap circus tents, on the side of a road near Georgetown Kentucky in May 1968. Tent Girl's story is remarkable for two reasons. The first remarkable fact is that after a couple of years of trying everything that could be tried to learn Tent Girl's identity to no avail, the tiny town of Georgetown essentially adopted her as its own - even paying for her burial and a stunningly beautiful headstone at the local cemetery. But the most stunning part of Tent Girl's story is how her true identity - Barbara Ann Hackman - was finally revealed by a complete stranger living in a completely different state. The man who had discovered the young woman's body, it turns out, had moved his family from Georgetown Kentucky - to Tennessee - kand there his daughter, Lori, found a high school sweetheart - a young 17 year-old boy named Todd Matthews. When Lori's dad retold his story about finding Tent Girl's body and the subsequent search for her identity back in Kentucky, young Todd - at 17! - decided there and then that he would make it his mission to uncover the woman's name and return her to her family, wherever they were. Over the course of the years, Todd and Lori got married and raised a family. Todd got a job at a local plant that manufactures auto parts. And every night, day off - every waking hour - Todd carried out his mission to find out who the tragically-murdered victim was and where she came from. In the process, Todd essentially helped invent the modern-day independent Internet sleuth. At first using the telephone and the U.S. Mail, then gradually using the early rudimentary tool of the Worldwide Web before most of us even knew it existed, he began working with law enforcement on not just the Tent Girl case, but many other missing person and unidentified body cases. He was a key player in the founding of the Doe Network and NamUs, two online resources that today help hundreds of law enforcement agencies and families identify missing or unidentified loved ones. Oh - and yes - nearly 30 years after beginning his quest, Todd's hard work paid off - and Barbara Ann Hackman was Tent Girl no more. Todd Matthews, in short, is a hero. And Todd Matthews is Melissa's guest on this week's episode. Listen in as a true legend in the world of Internet sleuthing, still married to Lori and now a grandfather but still as passionate as ever - retells his story in a fascinating discussion about how one person can change the world by simply deciding to become dedicated.

Todd Matthews first heard the story of Tent Girl on Halloween night in 1987. The story of an unidentified woman’s remains found at an interchange fascinated him to such extremes that it became a mission to identify her. Risking his own personal relationships, Matthews, with the help of a new technology called the Internet, would find a missing persons report from decades earlier that could be a match. Jan Smolinski is the mom of missing man William "Billy" Smolinski Jr, who disappeared Aug. 24, 2004, at the age of 31. Jan has gone on to not only search for Billy but also to advocate for changes in laws and to help others who have missing family members. Joining her on the show will be Todd Matthews forensic expert with the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUS).
Tonight's special guest is Sue Russell from California, an award-winning journalist and author of the newly updated "Lethal Intent," a biography of abused child and serial killer Aileen Wuornos. A truly fascinating work, Sue obviously has worked hard to understand Wuornos and how her childhood, upbringing, adolescence and early life drove her to shooting seven men .. and eventually led her to a death by lethal injection in 2002. Recently Sue was in touch with Todd Matthews of the NamUs.gov organization, who appeared as a SCAN special guest last week. The body of one of Wuornos's victims (she confessed to killing him) has never been found. Todd discovered that this victim's info had not been added into the national database (there are some 40,000 unidentified bodies/sets of remains in the US). Ms Russell will have a lot to share with us owing to her interests and sheer body of work. Her more than 1,500 articles have been published in many of the most prestigious periodicals and well-known newspapers. Sue's past topics include forensic science, wrongful convictions, fingerprint bias, eyewitness identifications, false confessions, animal rights law, gangs, and arson investigations. "Lethal Intent" was just reissued and fully updated as a paperback and eBook. In addition, CUNY Journalism Press will publish "The Illustrated Courtroom: 50 Years of Court Art," co-authored with illustrator Elizabeth Williams, in spring 2014. It features five award-winning artists' work and numerous trials (Jack Ruby, the New York Black Panthers, Charles Manson, Michael Jackson, etc.).
Tonight's special guest is Todd Matthews from Tennessee, Director of Communications and Quality Assurance at NamUs.gov. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) is a national centralized repository and resource center for missing persons and unidentified decedent records. NamUs is a free online system that can be searched by medical examiners, coroners, law enforcement officials and the general public from all over the country in hopes of resolving these cases. There are three distinctive databases, one for Missing Persons, another for Unidentified Persons and a third for UnClaimed Persons (identified remains with no known next of kin). Todd Matthews joined the UNT Center for Human Identification in October 2011 as part of the NamUs program. He previously served on the NamUs advisory board for the database and program development, and he piloted efforts to coordinate case exchanges between NamUs and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Mr. Matthews' efforts in the area of volunteer programs related to missing and unidentified person investigations involve creating and serving as the Media Director for two important volunteer programs: The DoeNetwork and Project EDAN. In his role with the UNT Center for Human Identification's CAFIS program, Mr. Matthews will provide visionary and strategic leadership, as well as coordinate outreach and media communications. A few years ago, Mr Matthews recorded 100 episodes of a podcast called www.MissingPieces.info.
