According to World Population review this year in PA there are 504 open missing person cases and 320 unidentified. I was astonished at that staggering number because that seems steep right? But the rate is only 3.9 per 100K which seems lower. According to NamUs most cases are resolved and the percentage that aren't is under 1%. The people that are found were either lost, made the conscious decision to leave, or were taken. The case we are covering today is over 20 years old. Police were never able to locate her living or dead. No one has heard a word from her since June 24th, 2002. Unfortunately, Sabrina Mae Kahler is part of that 1%.
Episode 127 Doe: ID 'Mowry Avenue Jane Doe' On October 24, 1985, the body of a woman was found by hunters near Mowry Avenue in Newark, California. Although the remains were mostly skeletonized, it was clear that she was a homicide victim, and had been shot to death. It was estimated she had been dead for about six months. The dead woman had no ID, and the only items found with her included some barrettes, a watch, a ring on her finger, and some earrings. It was determined that the Jane Doe was a White woman likely 30-36 years old with Reddish Brown hair. Her height was estimated to be between 5ft6 and 5ft8. Without much to go on, "Mowry Avenue Jane Doe" or "Wetlands Jane Doe" was laid to rest, but her case wasn't forgotten. Years later, DNA & genealogy would provide answers, but also more questions. Her birth mother was identified as Marian Marie Richardson of Missouri. A half sister of Jane Doe's was also identified living in Texas. She has been adopted out as a baby by Marian. Marian told her family that she put one child up for adoption, but she never mentioned a second child that she gave up, and there is no record of her putting up another baby for adoption. So we know who Mowry Ave Jane Doe's Mother & half sister are, but we still do not know who she is, and we don't know who murdered her. If she can finally be identified, then maybe her killer can be as well. Investigators are still working Mowry Ave Jane Doe's case. In late 1993, after Roney Dean Harper's confession to the murder of Lou Goettsch, discoveries of human bones seemed to be commonplace in the Big County, an area of Texas of which Abilene is the heart. With every set of remains unearthed, detectives with the Abilene Police Department, an agency that had no jurisdiction over any of the discoveries, sat tight and waited for the identification of one of their missing people. At the top of that list was Lou Goettsch, since Harper's admission had heated the case back up. Neither the Big Country bones nor Roney Dean Harper gave the answers the cops were looking for.If you have any information about the disappearance of Lou Allen Goettsch, please contact Abilene Crime Stoppers at 800-868-8477.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. On March 31st, 1981, twenty-one-year-old Lou Allen Goettsch had it made. A couple days earlier, he received a decent sized settlement check for a work injury he'd sustained earlier in the year, opened up a checking account, and put a deposit and first month's rent on a new apartment. Then, he vanished into thin air. Since the disappearance wasn't reported for two months, Abilene, Texas Police had a hard time figuring out where to start searching for the young man. In fact, there were absolutely no clues that cut them a break in that department. That year, two other young adults disappeared from Abilene, further complicating and taking resources away from one another. Twelve years after he disappeared, a man confessed to Lou's murder. If you have any information about the disappearance of Lou Allen Goettsch, please contact Abilene Crime Stoppers at 800-868-8477.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. Part 2 of 2. In late September 1983, 17-year-old Bambi Dick and friends attended a heavy metal concert at Davenport, Iowa's Col Ballroom. Stories about what happened after, perhaps, are conflicting, but whatever the case, Bambi vanished. For more than a quarter century, her family looked for her. At some point, her parents expected her to come waltzing through the front door with a couple kids and a husband. But they also knew she had no reason to run away and had never tried to run away before. Years after the disappearance, Bambi's brother began looking on the internet and realized he needed to post his sister's information to missing persons websites. He did just that in 2009, and within days, an internet sleuth made a connection between Bambi's Iowa disappearance and a Jane Doe in Amarillo, Texas. If you have any information about the murder of Bambi Lynn Dick, please call the Amarillo / Potter / Randall Special Crimes Unit at 806-378-4268.If you'd like more information about Dr. Ralph Erdmann and why some of his determinations in this case should not necessarily be taken as gospel check out our episodes titled: Debra Mackey Part 1: Plainview Jane Doe & Part 2: The Criminal Pathologist from September 2023.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. Part 1 of 2. In early October 1983, a motorcyclist discovered the partially clothed body of a woman in a culvert off US Highway 287, about 17 miles north of Amarillo, Texas. The local Special Crimes Unit immediately began their investigation, fully aware that time was of the essence. Between the body and her clothing, the victim had many identifying features but still, authorities fell short. They felt it meant their Jane Doe wasn't from the Amarillo area. Though decades later they'd discover that assertion was correct, investigators never stopped searching missing persons cases from around the country. But two and a half decades later, they still couldn't match the unidentified victim with any.If you have any information about the murder of Bambi Lynn Dick, please call the Amarillo / Potter / Randall Special Crimes Unit at 806-378-4268.If you'd like more information about Dr. I took my duty seriously and as the landscape passed out the windshield, I noticed a car's occupants as we passed them. The occupants all wore white sheets, not even their eyes or mouth exposed. To say it was odd is quite the understatement. It was downright chilling. As I told my friend about what I'd seen, we looked out at the road ahead with even more vigilant eyes and witnessed a bright object vault across the starry sky. And then I turned around to track the van with the strange occupants and it was gone. I'd forgotten about the incident, marked it down to both of us being exhausted. Episode 97 Loukthayoth 'Luke' Phiangdae On February 6th, 1996, 11 year old Loukthayoth Phiangdae, who went by Luke, vanished from his home in Raymond, Washington. He was apparently upset after being yelled at by his father for roughhousing with his brother, and he headed into his bedroom locking the door behind him. After several minutes, his family went to check on Luke and found his door locked. After forcing their way in, they found out that Luke was gone. It seemed like he had left through his window, and to this date, he has never been found despite extensive searches, and FBI involvement. Although there were possible sightings of Luke, none were confirmed, and it's not clear if he ran away, or was abducted. Over the years, suspicion fell on Luke's father, and some theorize that Luke drowned. In the end, there is not enough clues to look in any direction to figure out what happened to the 11 year old. Luke's case was largely forgotten over the years, and next to nothing about Luke was posted online until a June, 2024 Centralia Chronicle article by Eric Trent who is our guest in this episode. Eric discusses with us the clues and the theories in this case. When Luke vanished, he was described as an Asian male with Black hair and Brown eyes. He stood 4ft5, and weighed 65 pounds. He has a birthmark on his right buttock. Luke's case is on file with NAMUS. If you have information about Luke's case, please call Raymond police at (360) 942-4120. On top of that, he and his wife Billie were separated, although on good terms, and living in the same home in different bedrooms. One day in July, he went out to do some night fishing with his brother and his brother's girlfriend, and he never came home. After he didn't return home a couple days later, his wife Billie became very worried. It wasn't like him to stay away from home, and he missed an important medical treatment. When she reached out to Greg's brother, he told her a story that didn't make sense; that Greg had run off with his brother's girlfriend to a hotel, and that he hadn't seen him since. Billie didn't believe it, but drove to the hotel and found no sign of Greg. Later, Greg's Brother's girlfriend called Billie with a different story; that the 3 of them had broken down in Greg's car on the way to go fishing, and that Greg and his brother began arguing before his brother left on his own. The girlfriend arranged for someone to pick her and Greg up and to drive them home. The friend who dropped them off verified that he dropped the girlfriend off and then Greg off near Greg's mom's property in Sapulga, Oklahoma. The man that dropped Greg off confirmed that they were greeted by Greg's brother who appeared to be very angry and was yelling at Greg. The witness left, and Greg was never seen again. Greg's brother's story changed, and looked very suspicious. Greg's car was located broken down as described, but Greg was not found despite searches by dogs and drones. Some of Greg's clothing and his shoes were found at his mother's home, but his phone, wallet, and keys are missing. To date, Greg remains a missing person, although Billie believes her husband is dead. She wants to know what happened and where her husband's remains are. Her and Greg's children miss Greg. After Greg vanished, his brother who has a history of drug abuse, was charged with abusing his girlfriend and sent to prison where he remains as of the release of this episode. If he knows anything more about his brother's disapperance, he isn't talking. In this episode, Billie discusses her husband's disappearance, and all of the changes in her brother in law's account of what happened. Gregory was last seen in Sapulpa, Oklahoma on July 24th, 2022. He is white with graying/bald hair and blue eyes. He is 6'3 and 225lbs. DNA is available for comparison in NaMus, where he is listed as case # MP94228. Please call the Creek County Sheriff at 918-227-6374 with any information on the whereabouts of Gregory Treace. "Lay Them to Rest" with author Laurah Norton Join the Morbidly Curious Book Club Today: themorbidlycuriousbookclub.com “This had been the thing that bothered me most from day one: Doe cases got the least coverage, even though they were the ones that needed it most. So, I filed a fresh batch of FOIAs on the unidentified dead, the ones whose case numbers I'd been tracking in NamUs and whose nicknames were set to Google Alerts: Julie Doe. Dennis Doe. Christmas Doe. When I got the very first file, I knew these were the cases I needed to write about, above all. There was no one out there advocating for them. No family holding a memorial for Jane Doe 1980. Or if there were, it was under a different name. But maybe their attention could be attracted and connected to the unidentified. After all, if you can construct a story with the pieces that death has left behind, someone might recognize the life that preceded them.” Welcome to the Morbidly Curious Book Club's Podcast! In this episode, we are discussing our February 2024 book pick, “LAY THEM TO REST: On the Road with the Cold Case Investigators Who Identify the Nameless” by Laurah Norton. About: A fascinating deep dive into the dark world of forensic science as experts team up to solve the identity of an unknown woman named “Ina Jane Doe,” exploring the rapidly evolving techniques scientists are using to break the most notorious cold cases, written by the host of the popular true-crime podcast, The Fall Line and One Strange Thing by Laurah Norton. Over the past six years, Laurah has worked tirelessly to cover unsolved murders, unidentified persons, and unexplained disappearances—-primarily those involving communities deprioritized by mainstream media or investigators. After she stumbled across the case of "Ina Jane Doe,” an unidentified woman whose decapitated head was found tucked in the brush of an Illinois park in 1993, Laurah has been more determined than ever to help this victim reclaim her identity so she can finally be laid to rest. Laurah Norton is a writer and former academic with 15 years in the fields of literary fiction, creative nonfiction, and archival and primary research. Her work includes creation, writing, research, and hosting of podcasts ONE STRANGE THING and THE FALL LINE. Current literary projects include the book LAY THEM TO REST, and she is currently working on a suspense-thriller novel set in the early 2000s and tying together the Appalachian foothills of Georgia, folk magic, and forensic science. Other literary publications include fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction in journals and anthologies. Rosalie Fish is a member of the Cowlitz Tribe and a runner from the Muckleshoot Reservation in Auburn, Washington. She is a women's track and field athlete at the University of Washington, where she was recently selected for a prestigious Truman Scholarship from the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. She often runs and trains with a red painted handprint on her face, dedicated to Indigenous women and girls who have been killed or disappeared. Countless have gone missing, though numbers are hard to track for a variety of reasons. For example, as NativeHope.org notes, “The National Crime Information Center reports that, in 2016, there were 5,712 reports of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls, though the US Department of Justice's federal missing person database, NamUs, only logged 116 cases.” Today on Change Agents, Rosalie talks about how this violence has affected her own family and indigenous communities around the country, and what can be done to address it. Episode 89 Elena Roy 83 year old Mother and Grandmother, Elena Roy, vanished from her home in Fallbrook, California in November, 2021. Elena who had been experiencing various health issues, which possibly included dementia, reportedly left her home which she shared with her partner Chris, on November 3rd following an argument, and never returned. Reported searches of the areas nearby did not lead to Elena's recovery, nor did they reveal any clues to what happened to her. It came to light that Elena had wandered off from her home before and been returned safely after being aided by a passerby. Since Elena has gone missing, her family does not fully trust Chris's accounts of what happened. According to her family, Chris tried to sell off many of Elena's belongings, and used money from her bank account that he was not entitled to. They also are concerned because Chris had spent time in prison prior to meeting Elena. In this episode, Elena's daughter Tami discusses her mom's case, and the frustration of not finding out what happened to Elena despite searches, and the help of a private investigator. There is currently a $10,000 reward being offered in this case. Elena Roy was described when she vanished as being 5ft4, 120lbs, with Brown eyes and dark Graying hair. She was last seen wearing Blue loafers and an Ivory Beannie. Episode 80 Jamie Grissim Sixteen year-old Jamie Grissim vanished in Vancouver, Washington on December 7, 1971. She attended school that day at Fort Vancouver High School, and planned to walk home after school. She told her foster mother she would be home shortly after 1pm that day after school, but she never made it home. Immediatley, Jamie's younger sister Starr, who was extremely close with Jamie, knew that something was wrong. It wasn't like Jamie to not come home. Starr and Jamie's foster mother tried to report Jamie missing, but were told by police that they had to wait a full 30 days. In May, 1972, Five months after she went missing, Jamie's purse, ID, and some other belongings were found beside a road in the Dole Valley area of Clark County, northeast of Vancouver. Jamie herself was never seen again. Authorities initially believed Jamie was a runaway, but she is now believed to be the first victim of a suspected serial rapist and killer, Warren Leslie Forrest who has been linked to attacks and murders of other young women in the same area during that timeframe. Jamie's sister Starr, who is the guest in this episode, would very much like to know what happened to her sister, and to find her remains so that she can say a proper goodbye to the older sister she loved so much. When Jamie vanished, she was 5ft4 with Brown hair, and weighed 125 pounds. On the day she vanished, Jamie was believed to be wearing Blue jeans, white tennis shoes with peace drawing, possibly love written on them, red and white striped blouse with puffy sleeves. Jamie's case is on file with Namus. If you have any information about Jamie Grissim, or additional information about suspect Warren Forrest, please call the Clark County Sheriff's Office 360-397-2020 877-274-6311 360-397-2211 You can learn more about Jamie's case at the Facebook page run by her sister Starr This episode is sponsored by Better Help Online therapy. Today we look into a series of murders, mostly occurring in the mid-1980s, in the southeastern US. The bodies of unidentified women kept being found along I-40. Collectively, these killings came to be known as the Redhead Murders. And a possible unknown serial killer thought to be responsible for killing many of these women was named the Bible Belt Strangler. Have any of these murders been solved? Who are the main suspects? And what new forensic advancements have recently made the identification of many of these victims possible? We look into all of this and more. Hail Nimrod!
