Episode 123 Maereg Tesfaye Tafesse Maereg Tesfaye Tafesse came to the Unites States in 2012 to further his education, attending college in Worcester, MA. While in the US, he became involved in helping the less fortunate. He often worked to help people find food and shelter, and Maereg's work led him to the west coast to California, and to the Seattle, Washington area. Then, without warning, in March 2018, he stopped communicating with his mother, Legawork Assefa, who was back home in Ethiopia. After that, Maereg vanished.  Legawork has traveled to the US in an effort to find her son, and has enlisted the help of private investigators, and despite possible clues and sightings, Maereg remains missing. In this episode, Legawork discusses her son's case and the challenges of trying to find him when an ocean, and thousands of miles, separates her home from the area where Maereg was last seen. At the time Maereg vanished, he was 24 yrs old, and described at a Black male, standing 6ft-6ft2, and weighing 158-165 pounds. He has Tattoos on left hand with the symbols of flying birds. Episode 122 Tanner Sharp    On April 4, 2010, twenty four year old Tanner Sharp left his sister Sommer's home in Elk Grove, CA where he had been staying and drove off in his Maroon 1994 Saturn. His family never saw him again. Tanner had told family he was heading back to Kansas where he was originally from, and that a friend had lined up a job for him. Tanner soon texted Sommer saying he had made it to Kansas, but despite his text, it soon became apparent that he may have never left California. Tanner's family reported him missing, and it didn't take long for clues indicated that Tanner may have been in the remote farming town of Galt, CA about 15 miles from Elk Grove. On December 30th, 2010, eight months after he vanished, Tanner's car was found in a water filled ravine close to Galt. There was no sign of Tanner, or his belongings, and he remains missing to this day. Tanner's sister Sommer discusses Tanner's frustrating disappearance in this episode. Tanner Sharp is described as a White male standing 5ft10 and weighing 160 pounds. He has Brown hair and Hazel eyes. He has a two-inch scar on his right knee. His left ear is pierced. When he was last seen, Tanner was wearing A gray shirt, blue jeans, black shoes and a silver hoop earring. In the rush of our daily routines, we rarely stop to consider how quickly life can change. Most of us are simply trying to keep pace with the relentless grind of the clock. So when Joshua Maddux left for a walk one day in May 2008—a normal, everyday habit—no one imagined it would be the last time he was seen. His quiet disappearance left behind no clues, no trail… just questions. And while it might seem rare, vanishings like Joshua's happen more often than you'd think. According to NamUs, at any given time, as many as 100,000 people are reported missing in the U.S., with up to 600,000 reported each year. Most are eventually found—many alive. But in Joshua's case, the outcome was far from hopeful. In August 2015, his remains were discovered, reopening wounds and dividing a community with theories, confusion, and even more unanswered questions.

Episode 112 Ian Rogers 39 year old Crawfordville, Florida resident Ian Rogers vanished along with his employer's work truck on August 26,2024. He was presumably headed to a work site but he never arrived. A full examination of Ian's timeline on the day he disappeared has led to even more questions, and there are mysterious clues that to this point, have not led to finding Ian; including grainy surveillance footage of his truck being seen near Tom Brown Park the day he vanished.  Our guests in this episode, Michael and Alyssa McFarland, hosts of Tragedy - A True Crime Podcast, have covered Ian's case extensively over several episodes. 40-year-old Diane Augat left her sister's Hudson, Florida home the morning of April 10, 1998, and never returned. Just a few days later, Diane's mother received a disturbing voicemail with Diane screaming for help before the call disconnected. Episode 108 Cynthia 'Cindy' Atterberry and Oscar 'Joe' McNear   In 1981, 25-year-old Cynthia “Cindy” Atterberry and 30-year-old Oscar “Joe” McNear traveled from Springfield, Illinois to the Pike National Forest in Douglas County, Colorado. Neither were seen again.  They vanished in late June of that year. Several years after their disappearance, detectives received a tip that Cindy and Joe had been shot to death by two men and that their bodies were buried on property owned by one of the men near the South Platte River. The area was searched; however, the bodies of Cindy and Joe were never located. The Douglas County, CO Sheriff's office continues to investigate this case, and are asking the public to come forward with any tips. In this episode, we are joined by  Crime Analysis Supervisor and Genetic Genealogist, Michele Kennedy, and Detective Dean DeLuca of the Douglas County Sheriff's office. When Cindy was last seen, she was described as a White female standing 5ft2 and weighing 111 pounds. Cindy's NAMUS file Joe was described as a White Male, 6ft tall, and weighing 160 pounds. Carl Koppelman draws dead people.Specifically, Koppleman, a 53-year-old who lives near LA, makes reconstructions based on post-mortem photos of unidentified bodies, in the hopes that a drawing of a person's face that's closer to how they appeared in life will assist in identifying them, sometimes decades after their death.“Everybody likes a good mystery,” Koppelman says. “I've been kind of always been intrigued by mysteries. Unsolved mysteries and crime stories and that sort of thing.”He has plenty of material to work with. There are nearly 11,000 unidentified bodies listed in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons database (known as “NamUs”), which represents just a quarter of the estimated 40,000 unidentified bodies believed to be on record at medical examiner and coroners' offices across the country. For many of these bodies, only a few biographical details are available for identification; some were found years after death, which can make determining an age, year of death, or even gender impossible, let alone provide an image for the person's relatives or loved ones to identify—if the person has relatives or loved ones looking for them in the first place.The “lucky” bodies are found close enough to time of death and in good enough condition that a reconstruction of their face can be created and released to the public. The problem is, sometimes those reconstructions just aren't very good. Resources are scant and some of these cases are decades old, with only the crudest of sketches, drawn by a clearly untrained hand, to go by. Sometimes, if enough time has gone by without an identification and the post-mortem photo isn't too graphic, law enforcement will release those photos as well.Koppelman came across one of those photos in 2009. It was a man who was found in an abandoned Philadelphia hotel in 2006, having bled to death from a cut on his foot.“I looked at the post-mortem photo and I looked at the sketch and I said, ‘Hey, this doesn't even look like the same person to me,'” Koppelman says.Koppelman is an accountant by trade but had recently been laid off and was taking care of his ill mother in 2009. He'd become interested in amateur crime-solving websites around this time (he's a moderator at WebSleuths, one of the largest of such communities), specifically the forums that try to match unidentified bodies to missing persons, not without some success. The Story of 200 Forgotten Murder Victims By Robert Riggs They were daughters. Mothers. Sisters. Strangers. Their lives ended violently—and their names were lost to time. For more than half a century, Detroit's forgotten dead lay buried beneath weeds and silence—unidentified murder victims dumped into paupers' graves, sometimes stacked in vaults three-deep, known only by numbers in crumbling cemetery logs. No names. No justice. No answers. This is the remarkable five-year journey of a team of relentless female investigators who pledged to identify more than 200 victims of Detroit's outstanding murder cases. Led by Detroit Police Detective Shannon Jones and FBI Special Agent Leslie Larsen, this group of dedicated women—detectives, agents, forensic anthropologists, and scientists—literally dug through the past to bring closure to families and justice to the murdered. Their quest became known as Operation UNITED, the largest coordinated exhumation of cold case murder victims in FBI history. Schweit is a former FBI Special Agent Executive, Chicago prosecutor, and journalist. Episode 105 Deanna Merryfield On the night of July 21, 1990, thirteen year old Deanna Merryfield spent much of the night watching movies with her grandmother in Killeen, Texas. After her grandmother went to bed, Deanna snuck out of the house, and at 3:30am, went to see her sister Rebecca who lived with their uncle nearby. Deanna knocked on Rebecca's window and the sisters briefly talked before their uncle woke up and told Deanna that she needed to leave. Deanna had been driven to the house by two men in a Brown or Bronze four door car that Rebecca did not recognize. Deanna left with the two men who were thought to be either Caucasian or Hispanic, and after that, she vanished.  Hours later, Deanna's grandmother realized that she was missing and reported her missing, but because she was suspected to be a run away by police, there was no investigation started. In 1992, Rebecca reportedly received a collect phone call from someone who told the operator that her name was Deanna, but when Rebecca accepted the call, the caller had hung up. The call was traced to Kentucky, where Deanna had family, but none of  her relatives there reported seeing Deanna. During the 2000-2002 time period, there was an unconfirmed sighting of Deanna by a relative of hers who claimed to have encountered her, and that Deanna at the time of the sighting had several tattoos. The information provided by this family member may not be credible.  At another point over the years, someone contacted police and told them that Deanna had returned home safely. As a result, her case was closed. It was only realized later that the call was to police was inaccurate, and Deanna was still missing, at which point her case was re-opened. Deanna remains missing to this day. In this episode, Deanna's sister Melissa is our guest.  At the time of her disappearance, Deanna was described as a White female standing between 5ft and 5ft5, and weighing 108-120 pounds. She had Blonde hair and Hazel eyes. She had a small scar on her upper lip. Deanna if alive today, may or may not have tattoos; including the name “Merryfield” with an unknown date on her neck, a cross with lines on her ankle and a yellow rose with “Texas Born” on her back. There is a DNA sample on file for needed comparisons as per Deanna's NAMUS page Investigators are interested in identifying and speaking to the two young men Deanna was last seen with. At the time of Deanna's disappearance, the men, possibly brothers, were thought to be White or Hispanic, and their names may be Tony and Rudy Longoria.
