This maneuver may have allowed donors to receive tax deductions for contributions that ultimately compensated athletes, despite recent IRS rulings stating such collectives do not qualify for charitable status.Emails obtained through public records show that UCLA development staff actively coached donors to send checks to Shelter 37 while explicitly designating those funds for Bruins for Life, the school's NIL program. These emails often discussed timing, amounts, and communication with the charity's leadership to ensure the money was redirected as intended. In several cases, UCLA staff reassured donors that contributions through donor-advised funds (DAFs)—normally restricted from supporting private benefit—could be routed to Shelter 37 and still benefit athletes.After the IRS began denying charitable status to NIL collectives in 2023 due to private benefit concerns, most programs shifted to non-deductible donations. Croy told the WC that when President Kennedy was shot, at 12:30 PM, he was “sitting in his car at the city hall”—police headquarters According to Croy, he and his estranged wife had gone to lunch together at Austin's Barbecue John Armstrong believes that Croy met with Capt. Westbrook and rode in Westbrook’s dark blue, unmarked police car, driving to the Book Depository HARVEY Oswald boarded the Marsalis bus and then decided to get off the bus (around 12:44 PM) Two police officers boarded the bus and searched passengers for weapons, around 12:47 to 12:50 PM Why would police board a bus on Elm St. that was headed toward the Book Depository? This was not discussed nor investigated by the Warren Commission nor by the FBI nor the Dallas Police Police car 207 Police officer at the Tippit scene before the ambulance arrived The "discovery" of Oswald's jacket Westbrook was the in charge of personnel dept. Yet he did not remember the name of a single police officer with whom he came in contact that afternoon The second wallet found at the Tippit scene The second wallet was not entered into evidence The only items from this wallet that survived were the two identification cards with the name “Hidell” Two identification cards obtained from the second wallet showed Oswald and Hidell were the same person FBI agent James Hosty published his book Assignment Oswald in March 1996 For the first time, JFK researchers learnt about the second wallet which Hosty described in his book Researchers were desperate to interview Westbrook after learning about the second wallet But Westbrook died of cancer only a few weeks before the book was released !!! We're still not done with Libra – or Libra is not done with us! In Episode 28, DDSWTNP pick up threads left hanging after our three-part treatment of DeLillo's JFK novel. While tackling a wide variety of subjects, this episode homes in on Anthony DeCurtis's 1988 interview with DeLillo for Rolling Stone (and later re-published in expanded form), “An Outsider in This Society.” We're led to discuss DeLillo's canny interview articulations in general, his method of writing by day and reading more history by night, and his reply to the suggestion that on the basis of Libra some readers regarded him as “a member of the paranoid left”: “I don't have a program.” Along the way we also draw in vivid evidence of how DeLillo subtly reworked the voice of Marguerite Oswald from testimony in the Warren Report, what fellow Oswald novelist Norman Mailer had to say about Libra, and all that is illuminated by an exchange of letters to the New York Times between DeLillo and one of the Warren Report investigators. We also try here to understand as fully as possible the nuances of DeLillo's ideas about historical fiction that emerge in the incredible DeCurtis interview: what DeLillo means when he says Libra is “a piece of work which is obviously fiction,” touts novels' ability to “redeem” readers' “despair,” and makes the powerful claim that “fiction rescues history from its confusions.” We quote enough that listeners will get plenty of insight even without having read the DeCurtis interview in full, and we look forward to applying many of the lessons about history learned here to future works like Underworld. “Some stories never end,” as DeLillo writes to begin “Assassination Aura,” and that's true of this episode's cover image, which uses a National Enquirer cover from March 2025 about new releases of JFK files. Everyone knows the bullet. Few know the people in its shadow. Johnson tasked the President's Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy (commonly known as the Warren Commission, after named after chairman, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court Earl Warren) with investigating the assassination.Recently, we interviewed a lawyer who worked on that commission: Burt W. Griffin. Judge Griffin was assistant legal counsel to the Warren Commission. He was especially tasked with investigating issues related to Ruby.
