Dr Kenneth Collins is a theologian and professor who has been teaching at Asbury Seminary since 1995 (he and I arrived on that campus at the same time!). He is internationally known as a scholar of historical theology who has spoken in England, Finland, South Korea, Japan, Russia, Estonia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Australia … lots of places. And that's why I want to talk to him today. I want to talk about how our theology travels. Be sure to check out his latest book, Jesus the Stranger: The Man from Galilee and the Light of the World, published by Seedbed in 2021. I have such deep respect for this man and his work and it is an honor to introduce him to you today, so we can talk about what it looks like through a Methodist lens to share Christ with the whole world.
One of the most common interpretive mistakes we can make when reading the Bible is imposing our own cultural assumptions, biases, and understanding upon its texts. On part two of our conversation with New Testament scholar, theologian, and author, Dr. Craig S. Keener, we talk further about how needful it is for us as Christians to understand the culture and times in which the New Testament was written. Craig's best-selling book, The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament provides a helpful reference for a wider audience that is accessible, easy to understand, and informative.Dr. Craig S. Keener is F. M. and Ada Thompson Professor of Biblical Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary. He is the author of 37 books with 1.4 million copies in circulation. His books have won 13 national and international awards, including six from Christianity Today. He has written commentaries on Matthew, Romans, 1-2 Corinthians, Galatians, 1 Peter, Revelation, John (1,600 pages), and Acts (4,500 pages). His other books include a two-volume work on miracles and works about the Spirit, ethnic reconciliation, women in ministry, divorce, and various other topics. At the end of the devotion, we also share a bit of how we met and connected back in the 1990s during our time at Asbury Seminary. Thanks for joining me, guys, for this impromptu podcast episode - recorded on an iPhone at the motel in Wilmore. Today on the podcast we have Dr. Jonathan Powers. Dr. Powers is the Associate Dean of the E. Stanley Jones School of Mission and Ministry and the Assistant Professor of Worship Studies at Asbury Seminary. In this episode we talk about Dr. Powers's newest book New Life in the Risen Christ: A Wesleyan Theology of Baptism and his work on the hymnal Our Great Redeemers Praise, which released last November. We discuss the collaborative nature of both projects and their significance to the Church today.
This is part two of my conversation with Craig Keener about the historicity of the details of Jesus' birth. According to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, Christ's birth was attended by many miracles: angelic visitations, prophetic dreams, the miraculous birth of John the Baptist, and the virginal conception of Christ himself. The first Christmas, then, was a thoroughly supernatural event. Those miraculous elements have led many to question whether Jesus was born the way the Gospels say He was. In this episode of the Influence Podcast, I conclude my conversation with Craig Keener about whether Christmas really happened. I'm George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Craig Keener, Ph.D., is the F.M. and Ada Thompson Professor of Biblical Studies at Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky, and an ordained AG minister. Today on the podcast we have Dr. John Oswalt, Visiting Distinguished Professor of Old Testament at Asbury Seminary. He shares his story of coming to know Jesus, how he discerned his call to teaching and preaching, and why he is passionate about his work. We also talk about the importance of understanding Scripture and why theological education is vital when pursuing a call to pastoral ministry.
This is another great conversation with Dr. Steve Seamands, who is one of our favorite people in the world. Dr. Seamands served as the Professor of Basic Christian Doctrine at Asbury Seminary for close to 40 years. In addition to that class, he taught Introduction to Spiritual Warfare, Introduction to Healing Prayer, and a class studying the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. So Steve knows healing! He has authored several books, including Wounds That Heal and Ministry in the Image of God (a Christianity Today book award winner), and his new book, Follow the Healer: Biblical and Theological Foundations for Healing Ministry (Zondervan, 2023) is maybe his best yet. He takes us “under the hood” of healing ministry and helps us understand the theory behind the practice. I (Carolyn) am so excited about this book, because it roots the charismatic work of healing solidly in the Wesleyan tradition.
Today on the podcast we have Dr. Emilio Alvarez, Associate Provost of Lifelong Learning at Asbury Seminary. We talk about Dr. Alvarez's latest book, “Pentecost: A Day of Power for All People,” and how learning from other church traditions expands our faith.
For many of us, the subject of healing can be super confusing (& even disorientating.)Does God still physically heal people? If so, why didn't God heal my loved one? Why don't I ever see healings take place?Have you ever prayed for physical healing for yourself or someone else and not seen God come through?Same here.Adam sits down with author and his former Asbury Seminary professor Dr. Steve Seamands to talk about why supernatural healing seems absent today in the lives of most Christians and churches… and how we can respond when we may or may not see healing take place. During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology we're going to have an absolute – albeit perhaps convicting for the busy beavers among us – blast because we're going to be exploring the biblical imperative of play. Dr. Brian Edgar, a professor at Asbury Seminary, explains it this way: Just as in everyday life work without play makes one dull, in the Christian life service without a playful relationship with God leads to spiritual dullness. Could it be that in the theological framework of school, our Creator Redeemer places as much value on recess as He does on reading, writing and arithmetic? Is it possible that enjoying something God created so much that we burst into belly laughter could foster as much intimacy with Him as Bible study? What would it look like to truly take our faith seriously but ourselves not so much? Today's convo is riddled with giggles and doesn't contain quite as many multi-syllabic theological terms as usual, but it's a seriously important issue to consider how we can better embody the authentic joy that Jesus died to give us access to. Quite frankly, I think our lack of genuine, demonstrative joy is one of the biggest blemishes on the bride of Christ today and unfortunately is one of the reasons our witness doesn't resonate with the watching world. So please grab of cup of coffee and your Bible – unless you're dusting that super gross top side of your ceiling fans, of course – and come hang out on the porch with Ally, Dr. Howard and me. My worship life has changed ever since I attended revival at Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, Ky. I realized, through these young people, that we are not the audience in church. God is our audience. Is He pleased with our hearts and minds? Do we give Him our full attention in the service of worship and praise? Thank you Lord for showing me what true worship looks like! Thank you for moving through young students to teach us old folks how to worship!

Today we are joined by Keith Cowart. Bishop Cowart is a graduate of Georgia Southern University and Asbury Seminary for the M.Div. and D.Min. degrees. He and his wife Pam, who is also a graduate of the Seminary, have two adult sons. In 1997 Keith planted Christ Community Church in Columbus, Georgia, where he served for 21 years as lead pastor. Christ Community planted or played a major role in planting four other churches and sent out more than 35 men and women to serve as pastors, parachurch ministry directors, military chaplains and missionaries around the world. Today we talk about the Asbury Revival. Keith was able to spend a few days at Asbury while the revival was taking place and talks about his experience.
The Asbury Revival may have officially begun on February 8, 2023, but the roots of this spiritual phenomenon began long before those few students lingered after chapel to pray. On today's episode of the Great Stories Podcast, you're going to meet the Asbury Seminary students who have been diligently praying for this very thing since 2019. From the living room of New Testament scholar Dr. Craig Keener, these few seminary students have been holding weekly prayer meetings with one bold request in mind — Lord, bring about a revival at Asbury. They've asked us not to share their names, but they do share their stories, as well as an oral history of how the Asbury Revival began. If you've been watching from the sidelines through news coverage and social media commentary, then this episode will be a wonderful way for you to become intimately acquainted with the roots of the world's newest spiritual revival — a revival that we hope is only just getting started.
Close to 100,000 people flocked to Asbury Seminary for what students called "a revival" that lasted for more than two weeks. Was it a work of God, as so many claimed, or was it simply a Rainbow Wave of false enthusiasm? I'll discuss it with my friend, Adam Page, who is a Baptist pastor in Florida. What's happening on the campus of Asbury Seminary, and what does it mean? Guest Teacher and former Dean of Chapel at Asbury, J.D. Walt, shares firsthand his powerful account of the Holy Spirit at work through this sudden - and global - awakening.
I'm excited to announce that I will be doing a special LIVE show this SATURDAY at 8pm EST with Dr. Craig Keener, Biblical Scholar and Asbury Seminary Professor. What I love about Dr. Keener is his humble heart and passion for the Father, His love for the Sabbath and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We've all seen what has happened in Asbury, but what does this mean for the world? What role does the Holy Spirit desire to have in our current times? And what is our responsibility?
In this episode, we welcome back Dr. Jason Vickers, professor of theology at Asbury Seminary. Jason is an ordained elder in full connection on the Western NC Conference of the United Methodist Church, past president of the Wesleyan Theological Society, and current editor of the Wesleyan Theological Journal. He also has first-hand experience with the ongoing revival at Asbury University, which sits across the street from his office at Asbury Seminary. This revival started with a few students who stayed after chapel one day. These students stayed, prayed, and sang, and as they did, more and more people showed up to stay, pray, and sing with them. People from around the United States and the world showed up to the small town of Wilmore, Kentucky, hoping to experience the presence of the Holy Spirit that lead these students to stay, pray, and sing. What happened in Hughes Auditorium at Asbury University wasn't planned. It wasn't packaged. It didn't have a celebrity at the center. It was an organic movement that required the leaders of the school and the town to work quickly and together to provide for the thousands of people who showed up, looking to be part of this moment of revival. What does revival look like for you? What places in your life need renewal, the rekindling of your love of God and neighbor?Resources:Follow Jason on the Internet at jasonvickers.org.Find Jason's books here.Follow Jason on Twitter and Facebook.Listen to his previous episode on The Weight.

New Hope Soap - February 21, 2023 To all those who receive the SOAP devotional, During Lent, instead of doing our typical SOAP note, we will be sending out a specific Lenten devotional. These will be available in a text and audio version. There will be a Scripture, some reflection, and prayer. I hope you enjoy it! After Lent, I am encouraging all of our SOAP subscribers to sign up for Wake-up Call, a daily devotional produced by Seedbed, the publishing arm of Asbury Seminary. Wake-up Call includes daily Scripture, reflection, prayer, and questions. It's designed to help us reorient our lives around loving Jesus. Could there be anything better? Many of us at New Hope already receive Wake-up Call in our email every morning. Reading this together as a church family will be unifying and provide us with common language. Recently, there has been a focus on awakening and revival, particularly with the events at Asbury University. To register for Wake-up Call, go to seedbed.com and scroll down the page. You will find a place to add your name and email. I have personally felt led to take a sabbatical from writing the SOAP. It has been a blessing for me these past couple years to have this daily practice and I have benefited from the regular rhythm of reading, praying, reflecting, and writing. However, it also takes a great deal of time. It's time for me to simply take a break from this particular writing venture and maybe try some different kinds of writing projects. In the meantime, I think we will all benefit from the daily encouragement of Wake-up Call. I appreciate your understanding. I will close this note with some of my favorite Scripture about the power of God's Word. Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Keep reading, keep praying, and keep allowing God's Word to change you from the inside out!!! Blessings, Pastor Vicki . https://www.findnewhope.com Our staff and leadership employ what's called the “S.O.A.P. Method”. It stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. Each day, we read one or two chapters of Scripture and focus on one particular verse. We make some observations about how that verse touches us, discern how it applies to our lives, and offer a prayer related to what we have read. - Rev. What does the Bible teach us about holiness? What is it? How do we obtain it? How is holiness lived out practically? We'll be diving into all these questions and more in this month's panel discussion with special guest Josh Ratliff. Although Josh has family ties to both Independent Fundamental Baptists and Independent Holiness Pentecostals, he is now in the Wesleyan Church where he is an ordained minister and lead pastor. He holds a master's degree in Biblical Studies from Asbury Seminary. Also on the panel today are Bethany and Andrew (both from Oneness Apostolic backgrounds), and Natalie (from a Trinitarian Holiness background). We're excited to come together and share how God is transforming our understanding of holiness through the study of His Word. Thank you for joining us as we rebuild theology in light of God's grace, love, and the true meaning of holiness!
