The Disciplined Pursuit of Less Interview by Chicke Fitzgerald of the Game Changer Network as a part of the Best of the Game Changer series, showcased on C-Suite Network This on demand audio series is a part of the Executive Girlfriends Group Vignette Series. Chicke Fitzgerald interviews Greg McKeown. The original live interview was 9/11/15. Have you ever found yourself stretched too thin? Do you simultaneously feel overworked and underutilized? Are you often busy but not productive? Do you feel like your time is constantly being hijacked by other people's agendas? If you answered yes to any of these, the way out is the Way of the Essentialist. The Way of the Essentialist isn't about getting more done in less time. It's about getting only the right things done. It is not a time management strategy, or a productivity technique. It is a systematic discipline for discerning what is absolutely essential, then eliminating everything that is not, so we can make the highest possible contribution towards the things that really matter. By forcing us to apply a more selective criteria for what is Essential, the disciplined pursuit of less empowers us to reclaim control of our own choices about where to spend our precious time and energy – instead of giving others the implicit permission to choose for us. McKeown is the CEO of THIS Inc, a company whose mission is to assist people and companies to spend 80 percent of their time on the vital few rather than the trivial many. Clients include Adobe, Apple, Google, Facebook, Pixar, Salesforce.com, Symantec, Twitter, VMware and Yahoo!. The Game Changer is featured on C-Suite Network.

It’s not about getting less done. It’s about getting only the right things done. It’s about challenging the core assumption of ‘we can have it all’ and ‘I have to do everything’ and replacing it with the pursuit of ‘the right thing, in the right way, at the right time’. It’s about regaining control of our own choices about where to spend our time and energies instead of giving others implicit permission to choose for us.   In Essentialism, Greg McKeown draws on experience and insight from working with the leaders of the most innovative companies in the world to show how to achieve the disciplined pursuit of less. Source: https://gregmckeown.com/book/   Links Greg on the Tim Ferriss podcast: https://tim.blog/2019/01/09/greg-mckeown-essentialism/ Get chapter one of Essentialism from Greg’s website: https://gregmckeown.com/book/   BIG IDEA 1 (3:51) – If it’s not a ‘hell yes’, it’s a ‘no’. It’s a great way of having a litmus test for setting your time and energy. It removes those ‘why am I doing this’ moments in the midst of a task or activity. These are generally not a great way to be spending your time, particularly if they distract you from your goal. The ‘hell yes’ or ‘no’ is easy and it therefore removes decision making fatigue. Greg has mentioned examples in the book where he said no to things in order to do what’s important to him. For example saying no to a speaking engagement because it’s date night for him and his wife. It gives you an invincible power to be at ease with your decisions and not resent the things you are doing. He also talked about the idea of trade off of problems by thinking about whether it’s something the future you going to regret and resent the past you by letting you do those things. BIG IDEA 2 (6:22) – Go big. The reframe that Greg mentioned in this book is that you’re not doing less, you’re going BIG on one thing.  Often we’ll find ourselves in the scarcity mindset (read: FOMO) that by doing fewer things, we’re doing ‘less’, rather than doing one thing REALLY well (and big).  For some reason doing more things not as well is more appealing?! Greg also talked about the idea of escaping to be able to focus. Create your environment where you are not going to be distracted from your single focus.  For example, Bill Gates famously takes a couple of ‘reading’ weeks each year to escape and focus. BIG IDEA 3 (9:24) – Live without regrets. By knowing what’s important you won’t regret doing things because you’re only doing what’s important to you. This can be from a life perspective, business perspective, relationships or travel as this runs through all different facets of your life. There was a quote in the book which says you should be proud of the life that you have chosen to live’. Many people currently feel that the life they have isn’t necessarily chosen by them but being dictated by other people. Greg said that choosing to live in an essentialist mindset allows him to be ‘unreasonably selective’ on how to use his precious time. It’s about spending your time on things (and with the people) that matter the most. Greg McKeown is the author of Essentialism and the CEO of THIS Inc., a leadership and strategy design agency located in Silicon Valley. Greg tells the audience that if you want to break through to the next level and contribute more to your life, you must go big on fewer things. If you say yes to everything, you will simply stretch yourself too thin and exhaust yourself.    Key Takeaways: [2:55] Don't forget ManTalks is hosting another event! [4:25] What was Greg's defining moment? [7:00] Our failures lead to some of our biggest lessons. [8:10] The only time we really learn is when we have expectation failure. [9:05] True wealth is the ability to be present at any given moment. [9:20] Don't let a defining moment in your life pass you by. [10:00] Are you just too busy living to think about life? [10:30] Greg believes there's only two kinds of people in this world – the people who are lost and the people who know they're lost. [10:50] To be in the second category requires humility, self-awareness, and courage. [11:45] Don't run on auto pilot. [17:15] The first part of the book goes into the mindset of an essentialist. [20:15] How can we accomplish more things that are important to us? [21:05] An essentialist explores their options. [21:55] An essentialist is very aware they have the ability to choose. [26:45] Who really spends years working on a single masterpiece project? [31:15] Our society is very achievement-based and we've been rewired to accomplish it all. [32:00] What's possible when you start practicing the principles of essentialism? [34:05] If you say yes to everything, you cannot contribute to your highest ability. [34:25] If you try to do it all, you'll just do it averagely well. [35:45] When given the choice, people will choose fewer things done better. In my mastermind group, I was recently sharing that I was stretched too thin and felt like I was entirely too busy but not productive.   Click here for all of the resources from our interview with Greg I felt that my agenda was not my own and I was at the of other people and my calendar.  A friend of mine recommended the book Essentialism which I downloaded after the meeting on audible and started listening to on the way home. “You cannot overestimate the unimportance of practically everything.”― Greg McKeown This book was the answer and has opened up a whole new life for me and is one of the first things I have every client I work with read.  The author Greg McKeown is a best seller in the New York Times, WSJ and Amazon.  I reached out to him for an interview and to my absolute delight he said he’s love to. This is one of my favorite interviews I have ever done.  Not only are the concepts in Essentialism life changing but Greg is a Christian and he shares how the concepts and principles in the book came from his faith. “We often think of choice as a thing. But a choice is not a thing. Our options may be things, but a choice—a choice is an action. It is not just something we have but something we do.”― Greg McKeown The Way of the Essentialist isn’t about getting more done in less time. It’s about getting only the right things done.  It is not  a time management strategy, or a productivity technique. It is a systematic discipline for discerning what is absolutely essential, then eliminating everything that is not, so we can make the highest possible contribution towards the things that really matter. Essentialism is not one more thing – it’s a whole new way of doing everything. A must-read for any leader, manager, or individual who wants to learn who to do less, but better, in every area of their lives, Essentialism  is a movement whose time has come. “the pursuit of success can be a catalyst for failure. Put another way, success can distract us from focusing on the essential things that produce success in the first place.”― Greg McKeown Resources Essentialism by Greg McKeown Disciplined Pursuit of Less – Article for Harvard by Greg McKeown Greg’s blog Twitter: @GregoryMcKeown Bio Greg McKeown has dedicated his career to discovering why some people break through to the next level—and others don’t.
