Full episode on Patreon. Harley Flanagan is an iconic figure within the New York Hardcore scene. At age 13 he founded the Cro-Mags; one of the most influential hardcore punk bands of the 1980s and 1990s. At age 11, Flanagan began his involvement with music drumming for the New York punk band The Stimulators.Flanagan's early years were spent in New York City's Lower East Side, where he lived through the realities of the time. By age 10, he was living on the streets, often staying in abandoned / burnt out buildings within a neighborhood ravaged by economic decline, gang violence and social unrest. This existence would profoundly influence his later music. Many of the songs in “The Age of Quarrel” describe the day to day living of those years. Flanagan is a black-belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the legendary Renzo Gracie, having started training at the gym early on when they were located above a methodone clinic. His love for the art and deep relationship with both Renzo and the late great Ryan Gracie led to a home-like environment in the gym, where he eventually spent time working as a professor. http://livingproofnewyork.comhttp://patreon.com/livingproofnewyork

Part one features Mike Dijan, an absolutely all-time great hardcore guitar player and song writer. We also received a special surprise visit by Jojo from Outburst, who shares his story of growing up and discovering hardcore in Astoria. It all starts with a bench in the park... Definitely “angsty” and undisputedly heavier, more aggressive, and focused than punk, NEW YORK HARDCORE (NYHC) emerged at a time when punk was on its way out and thrash was on its way into the heavy music scene, ultimately becoming a “de facto” bridge between the thrash and punk scenes and eventually bringing them both together to bless the metal world with the new genre known as crossover (insert “shameless” United Forces reference here). It's time to learn the best way to “lift weights” in the weight training community and discover how to avoid an unwelcome “updraft waft” that in no way resembles “a spring mountain day in Scotland”. Find out which band is “the Sabbath of thrash and the Zeppelin of metal” and behold the best Manscaped advertisement ever produced (which should hopefully keep us from becoming any more “off-putting and frankly, tiresome” than we already are) when you JOIN US as we look at the genre that helped to bridge the gap and unite the forces of punk and thrash: NEW YORK HARDCORE. Daarnaast is Master Killer de intro van onze podcast Tales From The Eastside. Zo verbinden we mensen. 2. Testament – More Than Meets The Eye (The Formation of Damnation, 2008) Er bestaat een stereotiep beeld van liefhebbers van metal, punk en hardcore. 3. Dus hij maakt de titel ‘Live For This' zeker waar. 4. No Guts No Glory benefietcover (2021) Ik wil Stichting No Guts No Glory graag onder de aandacht brengen. 5. 6. Zwaar Aanbevolen Boundaries - Turning Hate Into Rage (Death is little more, 2024) “Metal Business Club?
HardLore is joined this week for an unbelievable and unfiltered conversation with Parris Mayhew, currently of AGGROS, but formerly the co-founder/original co-writer of legendary New York Hardcore band, the CRO-MAGS. The Cro-Mags are inarguably one of the most influential and important hardcore bands of all time, and the sheer insanity and legend of the internal twists and turns within the band itself is the only thing that rivals the magnitude of their contributions to hardcore music. 10 years after his iconic interview with Rod Glacial that first appeared on Noisey (after he thought it was only supposed to be in a French magazine), we go over some key details from the interview and from the story of Parris' time in the Cro-Mags for some of the most riveting and controversial stories ever told on HardLore, and he shares all the facts about his new band Aggros. Un-Hinge'd. I don't know what's more dreadful, a bad date, or a bad band practice session. Shitbit. Jorge Rosado is the vocalist of Merauder, a band from Brooklyn NY that formed in 1990. Well known within the New York Hardcore scene, Merauder's lyrics speak on political issues, the finite nature of life, violence and problems in the modern world we live in. Jorge grew up in Brooklyn when it was one of the more dangerous areas of NY, he speaks on change in life, martial arts, energy, balance, victimization & more.http://patreon.comangelandzpodcasthttp://artprimo.com
I would be a few years late to hearing 1993's Slip by Quicksand for the first time, but once "Head To Wall" landed on a gifted mixtape in the mid 90s, I was ready for more! That signature raspy voice belting out the gut-punching chorus was none other than Walter Schreifels, the legendary musician from New York Hardcore bands like Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today, who would go on several amazing bands like Quicksand, Rival Schools, and a multitude of other side projects. I was thrilled to invite Walter onto Waterproof Records to talk about coming up in the 80s hardcore scene, what inspired him to write music, and we ended up getting a little philosophical too!
Dito Montiel's upbringing in Astoria was filled with so many unique characters which affected him on a lot of different levels. His memoir, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, is a collage of these visceral experiences and how they shaped how he sees the world through music, writing and film. He wrote and directed the seminal film adaptation of his novel which won the Dramatic Directing Award at Sundance and received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Screenplay. Since then, his directorial efforts and ensuing filmography have expanded to include a number of interesting films including Fighting, Man Down, Empire State, The Clapper — based on his novel — Son of No One, featuring performances from Al Pacino and Ray Liotta; and Boulevard, starring Robin Williams in his final film role. In our conversation, we discussed the process of conceiving Saints and how the film was developed; being part of the New York Hardcore scene, particularly as a member the bands Major Conflict and later, Gutterboy; the influence of the Sundance Institute on his directing and writing techniques; and collaborations and friendships with Channing Tatum, Robert Downey and Tracy Morgan.Opening Credits: Jan-Michael Hökenschnieder x Fachhochschule Dortmund - Driving I Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0); Lemon Knife - Girl With the Cat Eyes I Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 264 features an interview with Mike Score of All Out War. As a hesher who discovered hardcore in the mid-Nineties, I've always had a soft spot for All Out War. They were one of the first bands I saw at CBGB's, and their mix of classic thrash, death metal, and New York Hardcore represented a thawing of relations between longhairs and hardcore kids, presaging the "metalcore" era that was on the horizon. I spoke with vocalist Mike Score about what the band had been up to since the last time he was on the podcast, and how Covid lockdowns changed the way they write songs. We also discussed how the latest All Out War album Celestial Rot ended up being their shortest, and why they decided to record the album themselves. My thanks again to Mike for speaking with me, and to you for listening. Misfits– Astro Zombies (Album : Walk Among Us – 1981) Bad Brains : Pay To Cum (Album : Bad Brains – 1982) Agnostic Front : Your Mystake (Album : Victim in Pain – 1984)
This week Adam had the honor to speak to legendary Cro-Mags frontman John Joseph. John grew up in the NY foster care system, experienced the Lower East Side while it was still scary and helped create the New York Hardcore scene. John has evolved into a plant based endurance athlete, author, and SEEKER OF THE TRUTH. Over the past few years despite a constant barrage of cancellation attempts, John has remained outspoken about the "sickness" and the "medicine". This was a fun show and a real thrill for Adam who has been a Cro-Mags fan for nearly 30 years. Casey from Goldengate Starfort Command joined us too.
