Anybody who has scoffed at the proliferation of t-shirts bearing the image of Che Guevara, the famous associate of Fidel Castro who among other things oversaw purges of political opponents following Castro's seizure of power, on college campuses knows that sectors of “elite” American society have an unhealthy appreciation for the repressive Communist dictatorship that has ruled Cuba since 1959. But for the subjects of today's program, the Venceremos Brigades, backed by infrastructure support from the radical-left wing of Big Philanthropy, their unhealthy appreciation becomes outright support, as members travel to the Communist-ruled island to offer labor in exchange for ideological formation. Joining me to discuss the Venceremos Brigades' history, their influence, and what they tell us about America's radical left are my colleagues Robert Stilson and Ken Braun.Links: Venceremos BrigadeThe Venceremos BrigadeThe People's ForumA Global Web of Chinese Propaganda Leads to a U.S. Tech MogulFollow us on our socials: Twitter: @capitalresearchInstagram: @capitalresearchcenterFacebook: www.facebook.com/capitalresearchcenterYouTube: @capitalresearchcenter

--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/canaan-usa-podcast/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/canaan-usa-podcast/support

"El canto tiene sentido cuando palpita en las venas de que morirá cantando las verdades verdaderas" (Song makes sense when it pumps through the veins of one who will die singing the truth) - Víctor Jara 'Manifesto' 1973 The November 3, 1970 victory of Salvador Allende as the first democratically elected socialist/Marxist president of Chile was a historic one. And one man in particular served as a voice and soundtrack of that time of hope, radical changes and later tragedy. His name was Víctor Jara. Víctor even wrote the anthem of Allende's campaign, "Venceremos", "We Shall Triumph" an ode to the power of the people and their will to defeat imperialism. Through his pen, voice and guitar, Víctor would sing of justice, the right to live in peace, the suffering of Chile's poor (something he personally experienced), call out government officials, or simply sing of his principles, ideals and how much he loved his family. Víctor Jara was courage, hope, love, justice, memory, truth, a voice to all those who have been abused and exploited by empire, not just in Chile, but in the whole world. No matter where he went, Víctor seemed to have a light that drew people to him. Perhaps it was the radiant light he emanated that stirred up such hatred and rage in Pinochet's soldiers. Or was it the magnificent beauty, candor, sincerity and sentiment of his voice, that led them to take his life from him, so viciously. Some things are simply incomprehensible and unfathomable, the murder of Víctor Jara is one of them. However, in their quest to silence him and extinguish his light, they inadvertently created an immortal star who will shine on forever and whose voice will always be remembered and celebrated. ¡Que Viva y Venceremos, Víctor Jara!!!! ***TRIGGER WARNING*** For those who do not wish to hear the details of Víctor's death fast forward: 1:51:13 - 1:56:17 Songs: Manifesto Te Recuerdo Amanda La Luna Siempre Era Muy Linda La Beata Paloma Quiero Contarte Camilo Torres A Luis Emilio Recabarren Preguntas por Puerto Montt A Desalambrar Ni Chicha Ni Limoná A La Molina No Voy Más Vamos por Ancho Camino A Cuba El Alma Llena de Banderas Plegaria a un Labrador (live) Zamba del Che (live) Preguntitas Sobre Dios (live) El Arado El Derecho de Vivir en Paz --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/anani-kaike/message

Spirituality is one of the most difficult subjects to talk about. Institutionalized religion has historically been a force of reaction to oppress the masses. A lot of people turn towards the Left out of their legitimate negative experiences that result from religious or spiritual practice. Whether we want to admit it or not, the same can be unfortunately said about political organizing. While it is easy to romanticize the work that we do, organizing spheres are not perfect. The fact that almost every one of us can name someone who has been harmed through this work is indicative of the costly nature that comes from our work. On this episode of The Heatwave, we wanted to spark a conversation around this issue with the help of the one and only Breht O'Shea from Revolutionary Left Radio. We discussed the pernicious trends that happen within organizing that endanger the health and safety of others and what can we possibly do about it. His name was Coronel Amelio Robles. The Mexican Revolution can be characterized as one of the most contested social revolutions to happen due to the multidimensional nature of the struggle. The present-day Mexican settler colony describes it as the “dawn” of a new transformation that “successfully pushed” the nation towards “modernity”; for many guerrilleros involved, it is a reminder of the contradictory nature of navigating within Latin America. The story of Coronel Amelio Robles Ávila of the Liberation Army of the South is a perfect encapsulation of this. Being a Transgender Zapatista in the early 20th century, Robles had to live his whole life in a struggle for recognition for who he was and did whatever was necessary. While some consider the bloodshed of the revolution to end in 1920, Amelio unfortunately engaged in the struggle until his deathbed. In this episode of The Heatwave, we study his story, the disgraceful revisionism that resulted after his passing, and what present-day lessons we can apply for the true liberation of all people. As China and the rest of BRICS aspire to the possibility of creating a multipolar world, the Amerikan Empire will not remain sidelined. Capitalist Imperialism will not let its stranglehold over the globally colonized and, out of necessity, will do whatever is needed to maintain control. Out of the looming fears of the settler bourgeoisie, the Yankee empire is turning inward, undermining indigenous sovereignty for the possibility of maintaining global domination. Needless without saying, water is life and we will cease to exist without it. Every aspect of our lives is dependent on it and unfortunately, due to the barbarism of capitalist exploitation that is built off of the settler-colonial foundation of the region, the future of water in the southwest is more uncertain than ever before. In response to the inaction of the State of Arizona, the Gila River Indian Community decided to take a stance and pull out from subsidizing the state's water supply. In this episode of The Heatwave, we discuss the historical legacies of the colonization of local indigenous nations and how this is tied to this bold stance taken by the GRIC. Day in and day out, we are constantly exposed to propaganda. On social media, on television, or even on the radio, we are exposed to people that are trying to influence us. Whether that is to buy something that we don't need or to sell us the idea that we need to get to war, propaganda is an essential fabric of Amerikan society. As communists in the imperial core, we must counter this. We must counter the narrative-building machine that has existed since the inception of this settler-colonial nation that has caused much havoc abroad. This is no easy task—the state department are professional manipulators so whatever we release, it must be calculated. It is widely known that the Amerikan southwest is having a water crisis and that time is running out, but one must ask “why? Why are we in the place we're at? Venceremos! We will overcome! This one word defined the socialist political movement of Salvador Allende's presidency in Chile and, after the military coup of 1973, rolled off the tongues of Chilean exiles and musical bands who found a new home in East Germany. As many of you know, I have long been interested in the GDR's international relations, particularly with Chile given that I studied abroad there in 2007. I was amazed to learn that Chilean refugees fled to the GDR after the 1973 military coup in Chile, that many Chilean bands appeared at political festivals in East Berlin and that Erich Honecker, the deposed general secretary of the SED, died in exile in Santiago, Chile in 1994. John Paul Kleiner introduced me to today's guest, Jesse Freedman, because of our shared interest in the connections between Chile and East Germany, specifically the Festival des Politischen Liedes, or Festival of Political Songs, a musical festival held for many decades during the GDR's existence that hosted bands from Chile and around the world in the name of socialist solidarity. Jesse is a doctoral candidate in ethnomusicology at the University of California, Riverside. His research focuses on the reception and role of Chilean nueva canción, a revolutionary musical movement in the 60s and 70s, and the experience of Chilean exiles in the former German Democratic Republic during the years of the Pinochet military dictatorship. Let's join Jesse as he tells us about the history of this festival, the role Chilean bands like Inti-Illimani, Quilapayun and Illapu played to popularize revolutionary music in East Germany and how the festival shaped the GDR's foreign policy all the way until its end.
