In 2006, the music streaming service Spotify, founded by Swedish entrepreneurs Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon was launched in the context of widespread music piracy, file sharing, and declining profits for the music majors. Presenting themselves as music fans who were intent on saving the music industry, Spotify has since gone on to become the dominant music streaming platform, far eclipsing any of its rivals, and making Ek and Lorentzon billionaires. While once lauded by the media, Spotify's reputation has significantly declined as understanding of how little most musicians receive from streaming has become more widespread and as Spotify has courted controversy by populating some of its playlists with so-called "perfect fit content" - stock music produced for Spotify in order to reduce the amount of royalties the company pays to rights holders. Journalist Liz Pelly has done more than most to bring to light practices such as these and to challenge the myth-making of Spotify's founders. In today's episode we spoke about the early years of Spotify, as it emerged in the context of mass file sharing and as the major music labels were coming to see Sweden as a lost market - making it ripe as a site for experimentation with streaming. We went on to talk about how Spotify is shaping the user habits of listeners and about the damaging consequences of the datafication of music. Finally, we chatted about some of the inspiring efforts to challenge the dominance of Spotify that have emerged in recent years, as both musicians and listeners seek to find ways to create music communities and to preserve and curate music history - practices that Spotify's dominance has severely eroded.

Tog voel dit party dae asof ons deur hulle omring word. En ons wil uitroep: Help! Ek moet wegkom van hulle. Jy ken daardie gevoel, nè?Nou ja, daar is mense van wie jy moet wegkom om jouself te beskerm. Soos situasies wanneer jy jouself in 'n vernietigende verhouding bevind, byvoorbeeld: 'n narsistiese baas, of as jy ‘n mishandelende huweliksmaat het. Afgesien van daardie tipe uiterstes, is dit alte maklik om mense te vermy, bloot omdat jy nie van hulle hou nie; of omdat jy vind dat wat hulle glo, sê of doen, vir jou aanstootlik is. Goed, maar as jy, wat vir Jesus aanbid, hulle vermy; hoe sal hulle ooit die vreugde en die vryheid van goddelike goedheid ontdek?By een geleentheid het Jesus besluit om saam met 'n klomp sondaars: tollenaars, diewe, afpersers aandete te eet.Matteus 9:11-13 Toe die Fariseërs dit sien, vra hulle vir sy dissipels: “Waarom eet julle leermeester saam met tollenaars en sondaars?” Maar Jesus het dit gehoor en gesê: “Dié wat gesond is, het nie 'n dokter nodig nie, maar dié wat siek is. After being the first candidate to declare, the campaign of Emma Durand-Wood has knocked on every door in Elmwood-East Kildonan. In Episode 52, she tells about her platform, her background in urban issues, and her vision for the ward as the October 25th vote draws near. A writer and editor by trade, Emma Durand-Wood moved to Elmwood in 2008 from Vancouver. While not being involved in politics there, her rise through community organizing in Winnipeg is similar to the BC progressive playbook. She's been endorsed by Shaun Loney, who finished fourth in the 2022 Mayoral election as the far left-wing choice. It appears he's the only one from that race to publicly endorse a successor to Coun. Jason Schreyer. Loney has vowed to put together a slate of like-minded people for next year's election. Part 1- Durand-Wood says that at the doorstep, a "common set of concerns" emerge. She recounts what she heard about crime, homelessness, the emergence of Transit complaints, and "a lot" of people want civic investment in youth programs. She tells Marty Gold about her own experiences living in the ward and how long it took to get a gang house shut down. "Have the police been effective? They've been very very busy... we need to take tackling crime as a community effort."10.00 - "We can't have this chaos of encampments."Durand -Woods hadn't considered the idea of establishing a monitored encampment at the Legislature. She advocates for more grassroots approaches like Elmwood Unity Walk to help get people out of encampments, but "we can't run everyone into jail."A Transit user, the new routing and schedule problems "does seem like a pretty big oversight" by city councillors, as her area "got a downgrade in service." "The smarter thing to do is the rehabilitation" for the Louise Bridge, rather than construct a new one, citing "a systemic problem" that's leading to "massive" deficits in the civic budget. 24.55 Part 2- Durand-Wood describes her personal background in the west before moving here for affordability and to start a family. She became involved in Elmwood issues by opposing a pawn shop licence, then helped re-establish a residents association in Glen Elm, then initiated a tree planting coalition. 36.00- With strong support from prominent members of the bike lobby and the 30km speed limit advocates- two groups that disrupted council proceedings in the last year - Durand-Wood is asked about whether their extremism and rhetoric aligns with her values. She disavows the political violence seemingly espoused by a prominent campaigner for her, who posted that the Charlie Kirk vigil at the Legislature was like "a Klan rally." 46.00- Citing a petition drive in EK showing support of 80-90% for lower residential speed limits, she maintains "it actually is not an extreme idea." Durand-Wood supports infill housing, and is asked about whether opposition to zoning changes because the demand for housing is rooted in mass immigration is also "not an extreme position". Ek, who has been involved since the program's early days, shared the origins, growth, and impact of DFA, highlighting its role in fostering welcoming environments where people with dementia can live, engage and thrive.From Minnesota Roots to National MovementEk's journey with dementia-friendly efforts began in 2011 in Minnesota, where she helped launch a statewide initiative called Act on Alzheimer's. Initially an educator turned project manager, Ek was drawn into the work after raising a large family. "I was part of the group that led the effort to get this going in Minnesota before it was handed off as a national initiative in 2015," she explained. She rejoined the effort in 2022, working remotely for USAging (formerly the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging), and has witnessed the program's remarkable expansion.The initiative took root through Minnesota's Area Agencies on Aging, which spearheaded community-level changes. Na de spectaculaire winst van Vallieres in de vrouwenwegrit een dag eerder, was er een kleine hoop dat ook bij de mannen het onverwachte zou gebeuren.
