His skiing style, although uniquely his, reminds me of what a fusion between Mickael Deschenaux and David Crichton would be - heavenly. Like Goku + Vegeta = Gogeta of skiing. Comics In Motion Podcast

Siamese Dream Review by Greg Prato While Gish had placed the Smashing Pumpkins on the "most promising artist" list for many, troubles were threatening to break the band apart. Singer/guitarist/leader Billy Corgan was battling a severe case of writer's block and was in a deep state of depression brought on by a relationship in turmoil; drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was addicted to hard drugs; and bassist D'Arcy and guitarist James Iha severed their romantic relationship. The sessions for their sophomore effort, Siamese Dream, were wrought with friction -- Corgan eventually played almost all the instruments himself (except for percussion). Some say strife and tension produces the best music, and it certainly helped make Siamese Dream one of the finest alt-rock albums of all time. Instead of following Nirvana's punk rock route, Siamese Dream went in the opposite direction -- guitar solos galore, layered walls of sound courtesy of the album's producers (Butch Vig and Corgan), extended compositions that bordered on prog rock, plus often reflective and heartfelt lyrics. The four tracks that were selected as singles became alternative radio standards -- the anthems "Cherub Rock," "Today," and "Rocket," plus the symphonic ballad "Disarm" -- but as a whole, Siamese Dream proved to be an incredibly consistent album. Such compositions as the red-hot rockers "Quiet" and "Geek U.S.A." were standouts, as were the epics "Hummer," "Soma," and "Silverfuck," plus the soothing sounds of "Mayonaise," "Spaceboy," and "Luna." After the difficult recording sessions, Corgan stated publicly that if Siamese Dream didn't achieve breakthrough success, he would end the band. He didn't have to worry for long -- the album debuted in the Billboard Top Ten and sold more than four million copies in three years. Siamese Dream stands alongside Nevermind and Superunknown as one of the decade's finest (and most influential) rock albums. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

After hair metal all but destroyed heavy metal in the late 80's and early 90's, things were a bit grim. Grim in the same sort of way that Birmingham, England was grim in the late 60's. Perhaps one of the silver linings to emerge out of the make-up and hairspray laden aftermath of glam was the down to earth, retro metal infused sounds emerging out of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, specifically, the “Seattle scene” which brought us an entirely new genre of metal (aka “grunge”) that served as a desperately needed palette cleanser and helped to breathe new life into the dystopian landscape which had become the world of metal.   Enter Seattle, Washington's SOUNDGARDEN, a staple of the Seattle “grunge” scene of the early 1990's that combined the best elements of classic Zeppelin and Sabbath built on a foundation of unpredictable & untraditional riffs chock full of heavy alternate tunings, ugly chords, and screaming vocals, conjuring a heavy 70's infused sound which is both simultaneously retro and brutally modern.  It's time to saddle up your “goat camel” and call the “dingo hunter” to learn more about the rich culture of “The Belgish” that goes far beyond “waffles and white beers”. Find out what used to put the “high” in high school, get ready for some “karaoke reflections” (including the best Creed impression ever) and JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE METAL with Seattle's alternative metal mavericks, SOUNDGARDEN   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182   Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. As you listen to episode 17 of Music in my Shoes, prepare to uncover the unexpected lineage of Blondie's "Hanging on the Telephone" and tap your feet to the disco-infused "Heart of Glass" that had even the rock purists grooving. We're not just dusting off old vinyl here; we're diving into the top-selling albums like Fleetwood Mac "Rumors," & AC/DC "Back in Black," and discussing how the music industry's landscape has been shaped by CD sales and the advent of streaming metrics. It's a nostalgic trip through America's musical treasure trove, filled with personal tales and revelations that tie us all to the songs we love.Strap on your boots for a walk down memory lane with classics that still echo through the decades. Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the Sun" takes a melancholic turn with its backstory of friendship and loss, while Bad Company's "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy" plays out like a rock star's daydream. These tunes aren't just catchy—they're a snapshot of an era's soul, capturing the emotional complexity that saw them rise to chart-topping fame. It's an exploration of musical narratives that bind us, stories that resonate with the weariness and hope of the '70s.Capping off this melodic journey, I open up about the personal significance of "Oh Atlanta" and how it became a beacon during a pivotal move in 1990. Our Music in my Shoes Mailbag segment brings our listeners into the spotlight, showcasing their engagement and shared trivia from game shows to Cheap Trick. We honor Soundgarden's "Superunknown" with a nod to its 30th anniversary, stirring up memories and musical shifts that have defined our listening habits. And for the finale, we step back into the electrified air of a Billy Joel concert from '94, inviting you to relive those moments that make live music an unforgettable experience. So tune in, because episode 17 is a record you won't want to skip.

Interviews by Brainard Carey

Photo: Keith Stein Anita Rogers Gallery is pleased to present Superunknown, an exhibition of new work by Henry Mandell.  Superunknown, Mandell's debut solo exhibition at Anita Rogers Gallery, features paintings and drawings from several bodies of work the artist began during the pandemic.  Mandell's studio practice is focused on the exploration of experimental artistic practices, the human condition, scientific principles and their merging effect on our lives, pioneering unique approaches to creating abstract artworks. All of the paintings in Superunknown began as stories, poems, or written data.  Using digital tools, Mandell transforms line by line, letter by letter, the characters of selected source text into visually compelling abstract imagery. The first step in transforming what is known into the unknown, experimenting and painting without the use of iterative code.  All creative decisions remain with the artist's hand and mind, establishing Mandell's wide visual vocabulary with digital painting. The Superunknown series of paintings depict multilayered objects composed of fine colored lines of transformed text about dark matter and current theories about what comprises the fabric of the universe. Each colored line is a separate letter. Like fabric, the overall form is knit up from thousands of separate fine colored line elements like a tapestry from another dimension.  The source theories bound up into the artwork represent the limits of our knowing, as 80% of everything everywhere is invisible dark matter / dark energy and is beyond our understanding. The Satoshi's Garden paintings depict looping vortexes of chimerical limbs and primeval roots; strange forms that seem to overrun the thresholds of cognition and formation. A growing living network inspired by mycelium. The paintings are composed from the text of the Bitcoin White Paper. No one knows who Satoshi Nakamoto is. He, She, It or They authored the Bitcoin White Paper. The paper solved the problems of establishing an internet-based platform for conducting financial transactions without banks via a ‘blockchain' of growing code that lives on thousands of networked computers worldwide mimicking the Wood Wide Web of living plants. Within the Wood Wide Web, actual living root systems are connected by mycelium fungi. They are completely mysterious, and how they work to nourish every living plant in the wild is beyond our understanding. The Plumb paintings shimmer with thousands of thin vertical lines converging into a veil of color.  A plumb line is traditionally used to level and center one's self on the surface of the Earth.  It is an ancient tool still in use today, with a hanging weight at the end of a single string that always points to the center of the Earth due to gravity.  In the paintings, the lines are the transformed text of poetry by Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman. The Theory Of Mind paintings form expressively sinuous interwoven patterns of colored lines within an inverted triangle.  Composed from altered text about theory of mind, an important social-cognitive milestone that involves the ability to think about mental states, both your own and those of others and their emotions, desires, beliefs, and knowledge.  Foundational to the development of empathy in children. Also, triangles seem to suggest ‘otherness', as in it is an unfamiliar form in everyday experience and can serve as an invitation to relate to an ‘other'. The theme for Superunknown is described by the artist in this way: “I am inspired by the words of the great artist Ann Hamilton in her essay Making Not Knowing: One doesn't arrive — in words or in art — by necessarily knowing where one is going. In every work of art something appears that does not previously exist, and so, by default, you work from what you know to what you don't know. You may set out for New York but you may find yourself as I did in Ohio. You may set out to make a sculpture and find that time...

The Downward Facing Spiritual Spiral
Why Music May be Losing its Cultural Relevance

The Downward Facing Spiritual Spiral

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 24, 2023 38:33

I LOVE MUSIC! You probably knew that already. As a DJ and songwriter, music has always been a huge outlet for me but I also love to listen to music. There are certain records that left a HUGE impact on me; Superunknown, Dirt, Parachutes, Wildflowers, Sea Change and of course OK Computer. And not to mention some of the incredible concerts I've been to which left me spellbound. Sure, I may be a BIT biased, but I believe the effects of music on our body and mind, can be deeply profound, inspiring and even healing. So what changed? Why does it appear, at least to me, and many of my contemporaries, that music has lost the cultural relevance and impact it once had on our lives. Sure you may be hooked on some new playlist on Spotify but how often do you find yourself transfixed by music? Where a song or a band piqued your curiosity to the point where you HAVE to learn more about this artist, maybe even go to their show, or talk to friends about them. Doesn't it feel like music may be losing its impact on our culture? ( I realize Taylor Swift is killing it across the country right now but I consider her an anomaly.) Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I  explain why I think music has lost its stronghold on our society and why it may be because of our cultural's obsession with dopamine.  I'm currently deep in the process of recording and writing my fifth record, so I begin by talking about my own process as a songwriter. It's a truly euphoric experience that fills my system with joy and even...dopamine. There's also something almost scientific about recording music. Writing the lyrics, recording all the different parts and singing the vocals and then somehow making it all sound like a coherent song. I bring all this up because I just finished listening to a new Rick Rubin podcast where he is speaking to one of my heroes, Trent Reznor. You can listen to that fantastic podcast by clicking HERE. Trent is the lead singer and creator behind NIN and it was deeply inspiring to hear not only his process as an artist but also his perspective on music and how its evolved in our culture. Back in the day, music seemed to be "the thing" that could catapult our culture in so many directions but now it feels like music has been diminished to simply "background noise" or a side dish. It's hard not to feel a bit discouraged as I prepare to release more new music into a culture that may be losing its appetite for fresh new music. Have you noticed this trend? Do you ever find yourself looking for new music or do you simply allow the algorithms of Spotify to do the investigative work for you? As always, thanks so much for listening to the show and being so incredibly supportive. I appreciate YOU! Chris Cornell was a rock icon who thrived on contradictions. An innovator who resisted genre labels, he was nonetheless a chief architect of the 90s grunge movement. Frequently ranked as one of the best voices in music history, he successfully maintained his own unique identity over decades as a multi-Grammy award-winning musician and universally acclaimed singer, songwriter and lyricist. Shortly after midnight on May 18th, Detroit officers responded to a frantic 911 call.  Upon arriving at the MGM Grand Casino, officers found an unconscious Chris Cornell lying on the bathroom floor.  After a short while, officers pronounced him dead at the scene. Now, a new report and photos show how the singer spent his final night. Hours after the singer's death, a Detroit Police Department spokesperson told reporters that the singer had committed suicide.  Officers discovered Chris Cornell with an exercise band around his neck.
