Chris Jones, Matt Dawson and Paul Grayson reflect on a dramatic final day of the Six Nations.France clinch the Six Nations title thanks to a long-range Thomas Ramos penalty with the clock in the red against England. But it was so close to being Ireland's title, after their win over Scotland. Chris speaks to Tommy Bowe and Andy Nicol in Dublin about a day when both teams hoped they'd lift the crown.
Florida State wrapped up the first week of spring camp Friday with its first padded practice, with coach Mike Norvell pointing to several newcomers who have made early impressions on a roster still taking shape. “There were some good things that we did and there's some ugly moments, and some really good responses throughout the course of practice,” Norvell said. “Some big plays showed up both sides of the ball.” We were aggressive in our installations, just trying to force guys with their study, their process, and the application of the things we put in,” he said. “I felt the winter program prepared them.” The linebacker room drew particular praise. Freshman Noah LaVallee forced a fumble in the opening practice Monday and followed with open-field tackles on Friday. Norvell also mentioned freshmen Karon Maycock and Daylen Green as contributors in the early going. Linebacker Izayia Williams remains sidelined working back from a knee injury but has been present in meetings. Veteran linebacker Chris Jones said the first day in pads brought a different kind of energy to the group. “I love to hit, so it was just good to be back in pads for sure,” Jones said. He also credited the group's “gradership program” under position coach Coach Sims, where upperclassmen are tasked with pulling younger players aside and coaching them up throughout practice: “That one thing you tell him that one time, he can remember that and that'll make him better.” On the defensive line, Norvell said Franklin Whitley has shown natural strength despite limited football experience, while Earnest Rankins drew praise Friday after being challenged heading into the padded session. “We've got big expectations for him,” Norvell said of Rankins. Norvell also singled out edge rusher Deamontae Diggs, who missed most of last season with an injury, as a standout Friday. “He's not fully there, but if he keeps taking steps, he's going to provide a real presence on the edge.” First-year edge coach Nick Williams also drew praise. “I love his energy,” Norvell said. “He's going to push guys to an expectation of what it needs to be, and he does that for himself.” Legacy wide receiver Devin Carter has also caught Norvell's eye. “He's a good worker. He really loves the game. You could tell he's a technician of the game,” Norvell said. “Not everything has gone well for him this week, but even in the moments where it wasn't a great play, you can feel his urgency to go get better.” Wide receivers Darryon Williams and EJ White have also been seeing reps, with Norvell noting good moments alongside areas still to develop. In the backfield, Norvell called transfer Tre Wisner “about all the right things that you want,” pointing specifically to his leadership, football IQ and work in pass protection. “He's smart, he studies, he's got versatility — protections are something that's important to him,” Norvell said. Sophomore Ousmane Kromah was quick to echo the praise, saying that “he really does take care of everybody.” Participating in his first spring camp after arriving last summer as true freshmen, Kromah said Wisner has helped him process the game faster. “My game has grown in majority vision,” Kromah said. Kromah also praised four-star freshman Amari Thomas, saying the room has barely scratched the surface with him. “Just wait till we actually groom him and teach him how to do certain things,” Kromah said. “It's over.” At quarterback, Norvell said Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels has produced at least one explosive vertical play in each of the first three practices. “For a guy that has a lot of recognition for his movement skills, he's been able to locate the ball and put it in good places,” Norvell said. Freshman Jaden O'Neal, out for the season due to injury, has remained active in the meeting room, something Norvell said he's been pleased with. Learn more about your ad choices. Even when it wasn't part of my job, I've always broken news, breaking stories about the powerful and how the system is rigged against the powerless. Without trafficking in speculation or outrage-bait. Far too much of our journalism — from fringe to mainstream — is focused on feeding us info-bits that feel like they mean something (about what's going to happen, or who someone really is) but don't actually have any bearing on the material lives of everyday people. Until I was laid off in January 2024, I oversaw the original reporting of The Young Turks. Since then, I've been counting on reader support to continue breaking news here on Substack. (I also do an NSFW weekday-morning newsletter full of the kind of unabashed opinion-having that I make sure not to indulge in the reporting here on this Substack, because impartial journalism doesn't mean not having opinions it means being professional enough to ensure my reporting is intellectual honest.) Here's what one well-known political scientist has to say about my work: "Jonathan Larsen is a first rate investigative reporter … He just started a Substack. Subscribe! I did." — Norm Ornstein And here's Mr. Rather: "Jonathan is a first-rate, world-class professional… As a reporter, he's a deep-digger with an unrelenting dedication to fairness and accuracy." I'm obviously extremely lucky to have worked with the people I have. My ethos for journalism is that "evil" is a poor explanation for human behavior. That applies to everyone from muggers and presidents. I tend to reject simple and simplistic explanations for…why things are happening. People aren't perfectly logical, but anyone telling you that people are doing bad things because they're crazy or evil is selling you something you shouldn't be buying. A lot of big accounts out there rile everyone up and rack up likes by calling out people for being evil. My moral high ground isn't enough for me to make that my calling. So I focus on revealing destructive forces at work and crappy systems. And, yes, exposing the people responsible. It's my belief that elevation and illumination are how we get to a better place. I appreciate your support for these aspirations. And if that's too earnest and saccharine for you, you should probably subscribe to The Fucking News! I'm Chris Jones, and I'm running for Congress in Arkansas's 2nd District. I grew up in Pine Bluff, where my story began in a community that taught me the values of faith, family, and hard work. Arkansas shaped who I am, and it continues to guide my vision for the future. My path took me into science and technology, and through that work I've always kept Arkansas at the center. My life's work is about building bridges — between faith and science, between rural towns and urban centers, across generations. Wherever I've gone, I've carried Arkansas with me, and I've always come home. I am a builder focused on opening doors and expanding opportunity and prosperity brick by brick, so every Arkansan has a seat at the table. I am a fighter who stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of this state. And I am a visionary who believes in the next Arkansas: a future shaped by a strong economy, democracy, growth, and entrepreneurship. The table we are building rests on four legs: justice that treats every Arkansan with dignity, an economy that allows people to prosper, a democracy that reflects the will of the people, and innovation that prepares us for the challenges ahead. I believe we can create good jobs and keep hospitals open. We can support families with access to health care and food security. We can invest in schools, teachers, and apprenticeships that prepare people for the jobs of tomorrow. “There is no British security without Europe,” Keir Starmer told the Munich Security Conference this weekend. Nobody wants a wider war in Europe, but we might get one anyway – and Britain's military isn't ready for it yet. So how can we change our armed forces and our wider society to ensure that Putin won't want to risk a conflict with Britain and our allies? Ed Arnold of the Royal United Services Institute joins Ros Taylor and Raf Behr to talk about how Russia uses hybrid “grey zone” attacks on democracies which stop just short of open warfare… the sobering truth about NATO Article 5… and why we have to budget for the next threat but one, because “What comes after Putin may be worse.” ESCAPE ROUTES • Raf rewatched Terry Gilliam's Brazil. • Ed has been enjoying England in the Six Nations rugby. • Ros recommends the comedy drama about stand-up comedy, Is This Thing On? , out now in cinemas. www.patreon.com/ohgodwhatnow Presented by Ros Taylor and Rafael Behr. First thing on Monday it looked like Keir Starmer was organic sourdough toast. By teatime he'd riled up Labour MPs and looked – somehow – safe for now. Can the PM weather the brutal months ahead? Is it still a case of “when not if” he goes? Plus, we look at how far the toxic misogyny of the Epstein horrorshow spreads. Special guest Morgan Jones takes us back to the anti-Brexit campaign for a second referendum in 2016-19 and we look for lessons for a possible Rejoin campaign. And in the Extra Bit for Patreon people: Does Lord Of The Flies still resonate in its new psychedelic BBC incarnation? • Buy Morgan's book No Second Chances: The Inside Story of the Campaign for a Second EU Referendum through our affiliate bookshop and you'll help fund the podcast by earning us a small commission for every sale. Remember Trump's first term when we talked about “kakistocracy”: rule by the worst of the worst? They're back and they're worse than ever – not just Trump and his entourage but his corrupt Mini-Mes around the world. Why is our time so cursed with venal, cruel, nihilistic and apparently mentally damaged leaders? Where do these personalities come from? Are Trump and his entourage true psychopaths in the psychological sense? Ian Hughes, author of Disordered Minds : How Dangerous Personalities Are Destroying Democracy, joins Zoë Grünewald and Jonn Elledge to discuss our age of “malignant normality”, Hitler, Mao, and the psychopathology of cruel rule. As one African proverb says: “The child who does not feel love will burn down the village to feel its warmth.” • Buy Disordered Minds through our affiliate bookshop and you'll help fund the podcast by earning us a small commission for every sale. A forty-year slow-motion disaster in higher education is reaching its climax – and Labour is left holding the bag. If young people decide a degree isn't worth the massive debt, where does that leave British cities that depend on free-spending undergraduate populations – and universities that are hooked on no-longer-welcome foreign students? Can academia expect much sympathy from graduate generations whose aspirations are held back by crushing loan repayments? And can Labour do anything about it? In a fascinating conversation Oxford Brookes history professor and education commentator Glen O'Hara walks Ros Taylor and Hannah Fearn through the unfolding mess. Abstract: “The only way to wake up Westminster and Whitehall is to have a crisis.” • Buy Glen O'Hara's book New Labour, New Britain through our affiliate bookshop and you'll help fund the podcast by earning us a small commission for every sale.
