Living Legend Tom Scharpling drops into The Damn Library to chat about the paperback release of his national bestseller, It Never Ends, and his recent 24-hour Best Show episode triumph. There are discussions of legacy, mystery, what it was like to work together on the book, and the bizarre temporal reality created from writing something and then waiting forever for it to appear on shelves. Within the comedy world, Tom Scharpling is known as a bit of a Swiss Army Knife. He's the host of the long running Best Show, online now and on WFMU before that. He's a veteran TV writer on shows like Monk and What We Do In The Shadows. He directs music videos. Now he's a book writer, with the memoir It Never Ends. In that book and in our interview, he tells stories of his own mental health journey that he's never shared with an audience before.Tom started running into trouble with depression when he was around ten years old, which evolved into two hospital stays, the second of which involved electroconvulsive therapy. That treatment wiped out the depression but wiped out a big chunk of his memory in the process.Get your copy of Tom's memoir It Never Ends: A Memoir With Nice Memories! at www.tomwroteabook.com or wherever books are found. Every so often, he makes a fist and gently punches his hand, trying to stave off a yawn. I don't take it personally. It's less than two days after the 24 hour Best Show marathon, and Tom Scharpling is exhausted. It was, by all accounts, a moment of triumph. The marathon marked both the paperback publication of his 2021 memoir, It Never Ends, as well as a kind of return to form for the beloved radio show-turned podcast. Old friends returned, new names called in and above all, it presented an opportunity for host and listener alike to reconnect with what's made the program special. Maya Shankar is a cognitive neuroscientist and host of the award-winning podcast A Slight Change of Plans. As a girl, she struggles with taking things too seriously: herself, the sufferings of others, the hypothetical misfortunes she imagines for the future. She turns to her father for perspective — and he takes her on a memorable walk, one that helps her understand her place in the universe (spoiler: it's not not at the center of it). When her adult life brings a new and unexpected kind of sorrow, she turns to these lessons from her father again, to find a balance between the seriousness that comes with loving life and the wise perspective of knowing we're all just passing through.Listen to Dr. Laurie Santos' episode of Meditative Story, "My monkey teacher": http://listen.meditativestory.com/LSantos_WWListen to Maya Shankar's podcast (selected as the Best Show of the Year by Apple in 2021), A Slight Change of Plans: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a-slight-change-of-plans/id1561860622Follow Maya Shankar: https://www.instagram.com/drmayashankar/Each episode of Meditative Story combines the emotional pull of first-person storytelling with immersive music and gentle mindfulness prompts. It seems like a design flaw in our species that we live in a world of constant change yet most of us are not comfortable with uncertainty. In this episode, we talk to Maya Shankar about how to get better at dealing with change and to stop seeking what scientists call “cognitive closure.”Shankar is a former Senior Advisor in the Obama White House, where she founded and served as Chair of the White House Behavioral Science Team. She also served as the first Behavioral Science Advisor to the United Nations, and is currently a Senior Director of Behavioral Economics at Google. She is the host of the Pushkin Industries podcast A Slight Change of Plans, which was named Best Show of the Year in 2021 by Apple. In this episode we talk about: Why humans are so uncomfortable with uncertainty and changeWhat a behavioral scientist actually does in the worldWhy even the host of a podcast about change isn't immune to the uncertainties of life The benefits of cultivating a more malleable sense of selfWhy humans are such bad forecastersThe importance of auditing yourself when you're undergoing a big changeHow to take advantage of big reset momentsThe concept of cognitive closure and why encouraging an open mind can make us more resilient Full Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/maya-shankar-466See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Here's the first episode of a new season of Fluxpod! Tom Scharpling is one of the best broadcasters in the world – he's the host of The Best Show, in which he frequently collaborates with his long-running comedy partner Jon Wurster, and the co-host of Double Threat along with Julie Klausner. This is a long and fun conversation that covers a lot of ground – the challenge of recording the audio book version of his memoir It Never Ends, how he and Jon have worked to keep the Best Show fresh for over 20 years, his relationship with Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young's bodies of work, and being terrified by Michael Stipe when he was a teenager in the early '80s. If you love Tom, this will be a big treat. If you don't know Tom... you're still probably going to have a good time with this one.

Is it possible to build a kinder society even while we're stuck in conflict? Today's episode couldn't be more relevant than it is today. Sarah and Beth of Pantsuit Politics literally wrote a book to navigate this question! They join me to talk about their upcoming book, Now What? How to Move Forward When We're Divided (About Basically Everything). Listen in as they share the one thing they want you to know — you are NOT alone if you find yourself tired of the anxiety, frustration, and fear that seem to be almost commonplace nowadays in your connections with other people, both online and in real life. I don't know about you, friend, but this feels like an important (and maybe long overdue) conversation for us to lean into given the cultural climate we find ourselves in right now. Sarah Stewert Holland and Beth Silvers host Pantsuit Politics podcast featured in the New York Times, the Atlantic, and named by Apple Podcasts as one of the Best Shows of 2021. They are also the authors of I Think You're Wrong (But I'm Listening): A Guide to Grace-Filled Political Conversation (2019). Listen in to learn more about: How our families of origin inform our views on politics and the ways we connect with others + reasons why this particular chapter of the book was written and rewritten multiple times. Ways to have conversations about current events with the kids in our lives. Navigating our differences in friendships + how being in connection does not mean being in agreement. Favorite quotes: ~My faith informs less about my policy positions and more about the way I treat other people in the course of discussing politics. ~I hope that my faith builds in me a quiet but strong patience with other people and with myself. I hope that my faith makes room to change my mind when circumstances in the world have changed because with politics we are often just talking about what we prioritize at the moment. ~Don't think that because your political identity is not shared that everything is broken. ~Something in what you absorbed from the people who raised you, the people who taught you what love means, the people who taught you what scarcity and fear mean - something connects to those bigger picture opinions and in our houses where we don't have to make policy, we don't have to all agree on who we have to vote for, in our houses we can have much more deeper and interesting conversations with each other if we are willing to trace that thread back. ~Conflict can be a source of connection; it does not necessarily have to be a source of disconnection.
