Stuck in a Loop - Happy Death Day vs. Source Code (Replay!)

This week on Friday Night Frightfest, we're revisiting an episode about the terrifying and sometimes darkly comedic world of time loops! With the recent release of the Until Dawn, we thought it was the perfect time to dust off this classic comparison between two fantastic films that trap their protagonists in a recurring nightmare: Happy Death Day (2017) and Source Code (2011). Happy Death Day (2017) Directed by Christopher Landon, Happy Death Day puts a slasher twist on the time loop concept. College student Tree Gelbman finds herself reliving the day of her murder over and over again. To break the loop, she must figure out who her killer is and stop them, all while navigating the increasingly bizarre and dangerous repetitions of her final day. It's a clever blend of horror, comedy, and mystery with a charismatic lead performance. Source Code (2011) Directed by Duncan Jones, Source Code takes a more sci-fi thriller approach to the time loop. Captain Colter Stevens, a helicopter pilot, wakes up in the body of an unknown man on a commuter train moments before it explodes. He's part of a top-secret program that allows him to inhabit the last few minutes of a person's life to gather information and prevent future terrorist attacks. Each jump back offers new clues and increasingly complex moral dilemmas. Tune in for a repeat dose of temporal terror!

[School of Movies 2025] This is not a Horror movie (or rather, it qualifies enough for that genre in terms of certain expected tropes and elements, but that is not its mode of conduct, and for people expecting conventional Horror, there's a lot more there in its place). That's what should have been on the poster and promotional artwork, and in the trailers, and threaded through the interviews and general marketing speak surrounding this film. Though doing so might have hurt its 25x multiplier as yet another Blumhouse success story. That misdirection helped it THEN, in 2017, I'm thinking more about helping it NOW in the 2020s, when viewers who do not like Horror genre movies (in particular cruel slasher movies) would almost certainly steer clear of what is actually one of the freshest, funniest star features in recent years, spotlighting Jessica Rothe, an actress of insane range with serious comedic chops. It is superficially Groundhog Day with a stalking masked killer, but concerns itself less with the gory specifics of womanslaughter and more with the mechanics of trying to get oneself out of a blackly comic and fatal time-loop, as what is built up around the character of college student Tree Gelbman is a much-needed break in her cycle of self-destruction. And on our Patreon bonus feed this weekend we have a full-length episode on the 2019 sequel; Happy Death Day 2U which leans even harder into the sci-fi, actively forgetting it was pitched as a slasher (and thus only doing seven times its budget at the box office). Well, at least one of them is a horror movie… by the end. The Classic Film: Sweet Sixteen (1983) "Teenager Melissa moves into a small town filled with racial prejudice and bullying, and each time she meets up with one of the boys in town, they end up murdered - but who is the killer?” (IMDb.com). Sweet Sixteen has all the hallmarks of an awful slasher, but the irresistible relationships and an unbelievably campy theme song save it from the garbage abyss. The Modern Film: Happy Death Day 2U (2019) "Tree Gelbman discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead” (IMDb.com). It only took two movies for this series to forget it was supposed to be horror. The renewed focus on sci-fi and low-hanging jokes turn a concept that is begging to be compelling into a sloppy disappointment. Get more at podsematary.com! Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Director Christopher Landon has returned with a sequel to 2017’s surprise hit, HAPPY DEATH DAY. This time Landon not only directs but writes the screenplay for 2019’s HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U. This one is a direct sequel to the original and was somewhat of a surprise film to be greenlit. But with the success of the first, the movie was quickly produced and released in February of 2019. Tree Gelbman once again is stuck in a timeloop. Murdered over and over in the first film, this time she discovers that there may be a more scientific reason why this is all occurring. With the help of her boyfriend Carter, his roommate Ryan, as well as sorority sister Danielle, the group tries to decipher how to stop her predicament. However, a new ripple has caused Tree to have her doubts on whether the solution is all that good. Once again leads Jessica Rothe (as Tree) and Israel Broussard (as Carter) return. Also the entire cast from the first has returned. Rachel Matthews (as Danielle) has a scene stealing role, while Phi Vu (as Ryan) also returns in a much larger role. Unlike the prior film, this one seems to turn towards science fiction rather than horror, but generally the film keeps the feel of the first film intact. Dark Discussions takes a look and gives their thoughts. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Happy Death Day 2U is the direct sequel to Groundhog Day plot stealing slasher Happy Death Day. Even though the slasher elements take a backseat in this entry, the fun and fresh tone of the original is maintained. This film has more of a sci-fi comedy than a horror movie and tries to extend the scope of the first film while maintaining the premise of living the same day over and over again. 0:35 - Intro10:00 - Trailer15:40 - Synopsis20:40 - Score22:23 - Spoilers/Discussion59:54 - Final Recommendations1:02:01 - Horror Movie News1:23:05 - Kill Count Game1:37:13 - Special Thanks and Outro Happy Death Day 2U Synopsis The film starts out following Ryan Phan (played by Phi Vu) on the morning after the events of the first film. Ryan was only a bit part in the original Happy Death Day, but plays a much more important role in the plot this time around. In a welcome bait and switch, after rerunning Ryan’s day a couple times, the plot switches focus back to the original protagonist of Happy Death Day, Tree Gelbman (played by Jessica Rothe). Check Out Our Review Of Silent Night Deadly Night! https://www.horrormovietalk.com/2018/12/19/silent-night-deadly-night-review/ If you’re not familiar with the premise of the original, it is simply a horror version of Groundhog Day. Tree is forced to relive day of her murder over and over again until she solves the mystery of who her killer is. This sequel throws in a wrinkle this time because despite being the same day, Tree is in a different dimension, so not everything is the same. https://youtu.be/THq6KlWgiqw HDD2U Lowdown Happy Death Day 2U maintains the fun and playful atmosphere of the original but basically switches genres. It’s much less of a horror movie, and more of a sci-fi comedy, ala Back to the Future. In trying to keep the premise fresh, they end up over-extending and there are multiple loose ends and skimmed over plot points that make this movie much less cohesive and tight as the first movie. Happy Death Day 2U is more enjoyable than the average movie nonetheless, and that is thanks to the performance of Jessica Rothe. Wake Up. Live your Life. Get Killed. Again. Happy Death Day takes the revered formula of Groundhog Day and mashes it up with a modern college slasher flick. The premise seems so simple that it's a surprise that it took until 2017 to be executed. Once again Blumhouse Productions (Get Out, Split) is hoping that this slick concept will translate to yet another 2017 low-budget horror hit.  Jessica Rothe plays the protagonist Tree Gelbman as she is repeatedly murdered in increasingly creative ways on her birthday. Each time she relives her final 24 hours she gets closer and closer to figuring out who is coming after her and why. It seems more like a video game than a movie but this movie walks the line well and delivers a satisfying entry into slasher film canon.
