Love isn't soft this week — it's sharp. In Valentine's Week Horror History (Feb 9–15), we trace the anniversaries where romance curdles into obsession, suburbia turns sinister, and the holiday's heart-shaped sheen hides something mean underneath.Inside this episode (Quick Hits + Spotlight):Feb 11, 1981 — My Bloody Valentine: blue-collar slasher dread in a mining town where the tunnels feel alive and the “tradition” is murder. (U.S. this week: free via Kanopy / buy-rent on major VOD.) Feb 13, 2009 — Friday the 13th (reboot): Jason's modern-era brutality — fast, nasty, and built like a greatest-hits mixtape of the franchise's worst impulses. (U.S. this week: Netflix and Tubi, plus VOD.) Feb 14, 1991 — The Silence of the Lambs: prestige terror and psychological horror that changed the culture — and proved “thriller” can still be nightmare fuel. (U.S. this week: AMC+.) Feb 13, 2019 — Happy Death Day 2U: time-loop mayhem with real heart and a wicked sense of humor. (U.S. this week: HBO Max.) Deep-Cut Spotlight:Feb 12, 1975 — The Stepford Wives: no monster suit required — just a perfect town, perfect smiles, and a nightmare hiding behind domestic bliss. (U.S. this week: Tubi.) Birthday Roll (4): Emma Roberts (1991), Natalie Dormer (1982), Simon Pegg (1970), Claire Bloom (1931).Weekly Recommendation (Valentine's “bouquet” stack): Misery (1990) (MGM+), Audition (1999), The Fly (1986) (Tubi), plus modern Valentine carnage with Heart Eyes (2025) (Netflix) and Companion (2025) (HBO Max). If you like your romance with slashers, psychological dread, body horror, and suburban nightmares, this week's timeline is a whole box of chocolates… and at least one of them bites back.

[School of Movies 2025] This is not a Horror movie (or rather, it qualifies enough for that genre in terms of certain expected tropes and elements, but that is not its mode of conduct, and for people expecting conventional Horror, there's a lot more there in its place). That's what should have been on the poster and promotional artwork, and in the trailers, and threaded through the interviews and general marketing speak surrounding this film. Though doing so might have hurt its 25x multiplier as yet another Blumhouse success story. That misdirection helped it THEN, in 2017, I'm thinking more about helping it NOW in the 2020s, when viewers who do not like Horror genre movies (in particular cruel slasher movies) would almost certainly steer clear of what is actually one of the freshest, funniest star features in recent years, spotlighting Jessica Rothe, an actress of insane range with serious comedic chops. It is superficially Groundhog Day with a stalking masked killer, but concerns itself less with the gory specifics of womanslaughter and more with the mechanics of trying to get oneself out of a blackly comic and fatal time-loop, as what is built up around the character of college student Tree Gelbman is a much-needed break in her cycle of self-destruction. And on our Patreon bonus feed this weekend we have a full-length episode on the 2019 sequel; Happy Death Day 2U which leans even harder into the sci-fi, actively forgetting it was pitched as a slasher (and thus only doing seven times its budget at the box office). It's time for your horror host to celebrate another birthday with another birthday-themed horror movie, and why not go straight to the sequel of the one he did last year? It's a bit repetitive, sure, but that's kind of appropriate in this case because Tree's also stuck in a bit of a rut. In fact, she's right back to repeating her birthday all over again... but this time, something's different. Let's find out what it is together!

This week we're back to discuss Happy Death Day 2U! The sequel that takes the formula from the first film, and switches genres from a slasher to sci-fi...for some reason. Does it work? We discuss it here!
“I grew up watching horror films,” Christopher Landon said. “I started at a pretty early age, inappropriately so, probably when I was about six. And, I was just obsessed. It was never a doubt or question it was what I was going to do.” Landon followed the traditional route, making shorts in high school, working internships as a young adult, and pursuing the path to screenwriting. “The great benefit to the internship, which I would credit for the writing side of my career, is that I exposed to so much material, both good and bad.” This education eventually led Landon to write horror movies such as Disturbia, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, Viral, Happy Death Day 2U, Freaky, and five films in the Paranormal Activity Franchise. “Script analysis inspired me to write. Any free time I had, I would sit and write and write and write. When I finally decided to step out into the world, I had spec scripts to show people. It was how I got my first job. I made a short, did a festival circuit, and a producer saw it and asked me if had anything.” Landon gives this advice to anyone trying to break in today: “if you can write, write. That is you controlling your own IP. That is you having a ticket to getting in front of people and that's critical.” If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? It only takes about 60-seconds and it really helps convince some of the hard-to-get guests to sit down and have a chat (simply scroll to the bottom on your iTunes Podcast app and click “Write Review"). Enjoy the show!

It's the second half of College Month-- call it Spring Break, bay-bee! This week we're discussing the sequel to a film that we both really loved with the 2019 movie "Happy Death Day 2U." Special topics for your consideration include: college dudes called Kyle, a lot of confusion about loops, things that ruin emotional moments for some viewers, logical decision-making, serial killers (?), science (??), and multiverses (???!) We discussed the original "Happy Death Day" in Episode 293-- hey look, a franchise we managed to cover in order! Even if there will only ever be two films, we're still gonna pat ourselves on the back about it! HEY, we're running a contest in August! Leave us a review on Apple podcasts or wherever you listen, send us the screenshot, and we'll enter you into a drawing to pick a movie for us to cover! Please also give us a call and leave us a voicemail at 412-407-7025. Let us hear what your sweet sweet voices have to say.
