Friday Night Frightfest
Stuck in a Loop - Happy Death Day vs. Source Code (Replay!)

Friday Night Frightfest

Play Episode Listen Later May 2, 2025 28:45

This week on Friday Night Frightfest, we're revisiting an episode about the terrifying and sometimes darkly comedic world of time loops! With the recent release of the Until Dawn, we thought it was the perfect time to dust off this classic comparison between two fantastic films that trap their protagonists in a recurring nightmare: Happy Death Day (2017) and Source Code (2011). Happy Death Day (2017) Directed by Christopher Landon, Happy Death Day puts a slasher twist on the time loop concept. College student Tree Gelbman finds herself reliving the day of her murder over and over again. To break the loop, she must figure out who her killer is and stop them, all while navigating the increasingly bizarre and dangerous repetitions of her final day. It's a clever blend of horror, comedy, and mystery with a charismatic lead performance. Source Code (2011) Directed by Duncan Jones, Source Code takes a more sci-fi thriller approach to the time loop. Captain Colter Stevens, a helicopter pilot, wakes up in the body of an unknown man on a commuter train moments before it explodes. He's part of a top-secret program that allows him to inhabit the last few minutes of a person's life to gather information and prevent future terrorist attacks. Each jump back offers new clues and increasingly complex moral dilemmas. Tune in for a repeat dose of temporal terror!

Andrés Gomez Emilsson is the director of the San Francisco–based Qualia Research Institute (QRI), a nonprofit developing formal models of consciousness and emotional valence. QRI's research aims to untangle the harmonic, computational, and symmetry-driven mechanisms underlying phenomenological experience. They approach the optimization of subjective experience through two powerful psychotechnologies — psychedelics and meditation — using them to explore the state-space of mind and map the structure of qualia. In this conversation, we discuss the phenomenology of enlightenment, the non-local field effects of consciousness, and one of Andrés' side projects: how perfumes and smells modulate perception and emotional geometry. In a time when inflation is climbing and fear is trending, this episode is a wake-up call to the Kingdom-minded wondering if God still provides. Spoiler alert: He does, but He doesn't just give us wealth—He gives us power to get it.This power is not to chase or beg. It's divine enablement to steward, strategize, and walk in provision that has purpose. We're breaking down Deuteronomy 8:18 in a way that disrupts the hustle culture and calls you into alignment with Heaven's economy. This is not prosperity gospel hype or a "name it and claim it" shortcut. This is about:✅ Remembering God as your source✅ Tapping into divine wisdom for strategy✅ Discerning how your assignment is tied to your provision✅ Understanding the difference between striving and stewarding✅ Rejecting fear and receiving divine instructionWhether you're in between jobs, launching a business, navigating a pivot, or just tired of the financial pressure, this episode will recalibrate your spirit. #FaithAndFinances #KingdomWealth #PodcastForWomen #Deuteronomy818 #GodIsMySource #Stewardship #ChristianEntrepreneur #Purpose #wealth

Gates admits he doesn’t look back often, but in this conversation, he shares generously about his early life: how his parents’ decision to send him to therapy helped him grow, the unforgettable moment when Paul Allen rushed into his Harvard dorm with the spark that led to Microsoft, and how his initial tech optimism has evolved with time. As we approach the AI revolution, Gates reflects on the unexpected consequences of technology and the ways our online lives have rewired how we think. Shifting to today’s political landscape, Gates addresses the disruption caused by the gutting of key agencies under Trump and Elon Musk, while stressing the importance of finding a path forward. In the nineteen-eighties and nineties, Bill Gates was the best known of a new breed: the tech mogul—a coder who had figured out how to run a business, and who then seemed to be running the world. Gates was ranked the richest person in the world for many years. In a new memoir, “Source Code,” he explains how he got there. The book focusses on Gates's early life, and just through the founding of Microsoft. Since stepping away from the company, Gates has devoted himself to his foundation, which is one of the largest nonprofits working on public health around the globe. That has made him the target of conspiracy theories by anti-vaxxers, including Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who has asserted that Gates and Anthony Fauci are together responsible for millions of deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gates views the rise of conspiracy thinking as symptomatic of larger trends in American society exacerbated by technology. “The fact that outrage is rewarded because it's more engaging, that's kind of a human weakness,” he tells David Remnick. “And the fact that I thought everybody would be doing deep analysis of facts and seeking out the actual studies on vaccine safety—boy, was that naïve. When the pandemic came, people wanted some evil genius to be behind it. Not some bat biology. Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices
