Chris & Kelsey make perfect robot versions of each other, but the replacements just run off together. The Original: The Stepford Wives (1975) "Joanna Eberhart has come to the quaint little town of Stepford, Connecticut with her family, but soon discovers there lies a sinister truth in the all too perfect behavior of the female residents” (IMDb.com). Just like Rosemary's Baby, which we love so much, this is yet another Ira Levin story about a woman undone by the selfish machinations of her husband after they move to a new home. Too bad this feminist thriller isn't nearly as effective as that. The Remake: The Stepford Wives (2004) "[Joanna Eberhart] has a hard time adjusting to Stepford's manicured environs and the overly accommodating attitude of the area women. Soon Joanna begins to suspect that something is not right, and she tries to uncover Stepford's secret” (RottenTomatoes.com). Just like Little Shop of Horrors, which we love so much, this is yet another over-the-top, satirical, horror remake from Frank Oz. Too bad this comedy isn't nearly as bold as that. Chris & Kelsey give off good vibes and talk in a very positive manner about plants—but are sure not to feed them! The Classic Film: Little Shop of Horrors (1986) "A nerdy florist finds his chance for success and romance with the help of a giant man-eating plant who demands to be fed” (IMDb.com). Little Shop of Horrors is wonderful and joyous and great and shut up if you don't like it. The Modern Film: The Happening (2008) "A science teacher, his wife, and a young girl struggle to survive a plague that causes those infected to commit suicide” (IMDb.com). The Happening is famously maligned as confirmation that M. Night Shyamalan's promising star had faded. You could argue that the wooden acting and silly-but-melodramatic premise are an intentional homage to 50s B-movies, but if that's the case, Shyamalan didn't go hard enough. Chris & Kelsey have maybe seen one too many zombie movies, so it's a good thing both of these are pretty great. The Classic Film: Day of the Dead (1985) "Trapped in a missile silo, a small team of scientists, civilians, and trigger-happy soldiers battle desperately to ensure the survival of the human race. However, the tension inside the base is reaching a breaking point, and the zombies are gathering outside” (IMDb.com). The final installment of George A. Romero's original undead trilogy, Day of the Dead is a little slower than the others but a lot more brutal. The Modern Film: Train to Busan (2016) "While a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan” (IMDb.com). Zombie tropes and Korean melodrama are the order of the day, but Train to Busan is still exceptionally made and full of great characters and moments. Chris & Kelsey just moved into their new home, so they're taking this week to... I don't know, scare themselves? The Classic Film: The Sentinel (1977) "A young woman moves into an apartment in a building which houses a sinister evil” (IMDb.com). A Rosemary's Baby wannabe that makes several tasteless choices, The Sentinel is nevertheless a compelling tale that's generally well told. The Modern Film: The Innkeepers (2011) "During the final days at the Yankee Pedlar Inn, two employees determined to reveal the hotel's haunted past begin to experience disturbing events as old guests check in for a stay” (IMDb.com). As fans of Ti West's House of the Devil, Chris and Kelsey were gobsmacked that The Innkeepers could possibly have been made by the same person. If you're expecting us to have a lot of good things to say about The Burning... don't. For the sin of kickstarting Harvey Weinstein's career, it could've at least had the common decency to be interesting. The Modern Film: Joy Ride (2001) "Three young people on a road trip from Colorado to New Jersey talk to a trucker on their CB radio, then must escape when he turns out to be a psychopathic killer” (IMDb.com). 2001 was a hell of a time—movies like Joy Ride seemed a lot more compelling then. Chris & Kelsey are executing righteous justice that vindicates their bloodlust. Have a safe night! The Classic Film: The New Kids (1985) "A brother and sister arrive in a small town to help their relatives run an amusement park, and they find the town is terrorized by a local street gang” (IMDb.com). Lots of people would love to be the coolest, strongest, most righteous guy in their school. Loren McWilliams is that guy, and the punks at his new school have just given him an excuse to kick butt. The New Kids may be a little silly, but it can also be extremely intense, mainly due to some terrible assault and the fine acting of a young James Spader. The Modern Film: The Purge (2013) "A wealthy family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legal” (IMDb.com). The Purge is a simple premise that many dismiss as puerile, but its politics are worth dissecting to get beneath the heavy-handed surface. The Classic Film: Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996) "Our deadly leprechaun is in space to woo a beautiful princess who is impressed with his gold and desires to separate him from it” (IMDb.com). It's not like the franchise could ever really be accused of "trying," but this movie would be bad even by porn standards if there were any actual sex in it. The Modern Film: Boys from County Hell (2020) "A crew of hardy road workers, led by a bickering Father and Son, must survive the night when they accidentally awaken an ancient Irish vampire” (IMDb.com). The Classic Film: Delicatessen (1991) "Post-apocalyptic surrealist black comedy about the landlord of an apartment building who occasionally prepares a delicacy for his odd tenants” (IMDb.com). Yes, we know eating meat is terrible, but even this charming, funny, hopeful, and morbid fantasy isn't going to stop us. (Sorry!) The Modern Film: Fresh (2022) "The horrors of modern dating seen through one young woman's defiant battle to survive her new boyfriend's unusual appetites” (IMDb.com). The Classic Film: Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922) "Vampire Count Orlok expresses interest in a new residence and real estate agent Hutter's wife” (IMDb.com). Nosferatu, which premiered in Germany on March 4th, 1922, is a classic of horror, silent film, and cinema itself and for good reason. A sort of bastardized version of Bram Stoker's Dracula story, Nosferatu manages to thrill and frighten without speaking a word. The Modern Film: Shadow of the Vampire (2000) "The filming of Nosferatu is hampered by the fact that its star, Max Schreck, is taking the role of a vampire far more seriously than seems humanly possible” (IMDb.com). Shadow of the Vampire asks the question, "What if Max Schreck was really a vampire and F.W. Murnau knew it?" The Classic Film: Bride of Chucky (1998) "Chucky, the doll possessed by a serial killer, discovers the perfect mate to kill and revive into the body of another doll” (IMDb.com). Believe it or not: we really enjoyed the Tiffany/Chucky dynamic and the silly/serious juxtaposition, but you can see where the franchise is headed and, based on the last scene, we're not looking forward to it. The Modern Film: My Valentine (2020) "A pop singer's songs and artistic identity have been stolen by her ex-boyfriend/manager and shamelessly pasted onto his new girlfriend/protégé. Locked together in a small concert venue after hours, the three of them confront the emotional abuses of the past...until things turn violent” (IMDb.com). It just so perfectly exemplifies a specific style from a specific time that makes Kelsey say, "They were right in the 80s." The Modern Film: Bloodsucking Bastards (2015) "A down-on-his-luck cubicle worker and his slacker best friend discover their new boss is a vampire who is turning their coworkers into the undead.” (IMDb.com). Chris & Kelsey wrap up the franchise (for now) and get into serious conversations about the function of the proton pack. The Classic Film: Ghostbusters II (1989) "The discovery of a massive river of ectoplasm and a resurgence of spectral activity allows the staff of Ghostbusters to revive the business” (IMDb.com). Ghostbusters II is often maligned for being too kid-friendly and lacking the edge of the original, but it stacks up surprisingly well even if it isn't quite as good. If you think the Ghostbusters franchise isn't for kids, you're fooling yourself. The Modern Film: Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) "When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind” (IMDb.com). Afterlife is actually a pretty good movie (if a little too long) and honors the franchise and Harold Ramis well. So what do you do when it's not a very good Ghostbusters movie? The Classic Film: Pumpkinhead (1988) "After a tragic accident, a man conjures up a towering, vengeful demon called Pumpkinhead to destroy a group of unsuspecting teenagers” (IMDb.com). Famed creature creator Stan Winston's directorial debut is the sort of film that most people outside the general horror fandom probably haven't even heard of, but it garners certain respect among the faithful and for good reason. We wouldn't say it's "stellar" but it's certainly charming and very enjoyable. Oh, and Pumpkinhead be throwin' folks. The Modern Film: A Quiet Place (2018) "In a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing” (IMDb.com). A Quiet Place may be a motherlode for pedants, but to fall down that hole would be to miss the incredible performances and atmosphere that make the movie pretty dang good. Plus, it makes Chris cry. Candyman 3—following another location change to Los Angeles this time—isn't good, but it isn't as bad as you might think. It's certainly no Farewell to the Flesh. The Modern Film: Candyman (2021) "A sequel to the horror film Candyman (1992) that returns to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began” (IMDb.com). The Classic Film: Angel Heart (1987) "A private investigator is hired by a man who calls himself Louis Cyphre to track down a singer named Johnny Favorite. But the investigation takes an unexpected and somber turn” (IMDb.com). Mickey Rourke gets really melodramatic in probably one of his best roles opposite a Robert De Niro the likes of which you've likely never seen before. Angel Heart doesn't really stick the landing, but it's a beautiful and troubling movie. The Modern Film: Midnight Kiss (2019) "Midnight Kiss follows a group of longtime gay best friends and their straight female bestie as they head to a beautiful desert home to celebrate New Year's Eve. The Classic Film: The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) "Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion” (IMDb.com). The Modern Film: Anna and the Apocalypse (2017) "A zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven—at Christmas—forcing Anna and her friends to fight, slash, and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones” (IMDb.com). Anna and the Apocalypse is passable insofar as it's one of the few musical comedy horrors in existence, but it's a goldmine of a premise that isn't exploited for its opportunities nearly enough. Chris & Kelsey sorta just meander from kill to kill with no real focus or driving force. The Classic Film: To All a Goodnight (1980) "A group of teenagers at a party find themselves being stalked by a maniacal killer in a Santa Claus costume” (IMDb.com). Despite the fact that this movie came out first (just barely), it still manages to feel like it has ripped off tropes from better movies (Prom Night, Terror Train, Friday the 13th, etc.). That's probably because To All a Goodnight is pretty lifeless and uninspired. The Modern Film: The Gingerdead Man (2005) "An evil yet adorable Gingerbread man comes to life with the soul of a convicted killer—this real-life cookie monster wreaks havoc on the girl who sent the killer to the electric chair” (IMDb.com). Subtracting the intro, establishing shots, and the credits, this movie runs less than 60 minutes and it still feels too long. It's okay for a movie to be silly, but it should be clever, too. The Amityville series hasn't quite gone bonkers yet, but this second entry is weird in uncomfortable ways. It's fairly interesting in its execution, but you couldn't say it's great. The Modern Film: Amityville Playhouse (2015) "A teenager and her friends become trapped in a haunted theater with a disturbing connection to Amityville's secret past” (IMDb.com). This overlooked gem from the slasher boom era of the 80s has more to offer than you might assume at first glance. Creative effects, ridiculous characters, and a killer soundtrack make us wonder why people don't talk about it more often. The Modern Film: Escape Room (2019) "Six strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive” (IMDb.com). The Classic Film: Child's Play 3 (1991) "Chucky returns for revenge against Andy, the young boy who defeated him and now a teenager living in a military academy” (IMDb.com). Sorry, Jack—Chucky's back... in a dull and unnecessary sequel that didn't even scare Kelsey, who is notoriously terrified of the murderous doll. The Modern Film: Halloween Kills (2021) "The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode continues in the next thrilling chapter of the Halloween series” (IMDb.com). Well, they've lost the plot. This follow-up to the admirably great 2018 refresh is so fan-servicey that it's hard for a fan to actually enjoy. It wouldn't be so bad if it were at least competent... but it's not. The Modern Film: Host (2020) "Six friends hire a medium to hold a seance via Zoom during lockdown, but they get far more than they bargained for as things quickly go wrong” (IMDb.com). Host, a byproduct of quarantine life and socializing via Zoom, won't blow your skirt up or anything, but it's pretty impressive for its low budget, short production turnaround, and relatively non-existent time commitment. The Classic Film: Phantom of the Paradise (1974) "A disfigured composer sells his soul for the woman he loves so that she will perform his music. However, an evil record tycoon betrays him and steals his music to open his rock palace, The Paradise” (IMDb.com). Brian DePalma and Paul Williams' musical tragedy cribs its story from several all-time greats, including Phantom of the Opera (of course), Faust, and The Picture of Dorian Gray, couching it all in some glam rock style that's not much like Rocky Horror Picture Show at all. The Modern Film: Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) "A worldwide epidemic encourages a biotech company to launch an organ-financing program similar in nature to a standard car loan. The repossession clause is a killer, however” (IMDb.com). Repo! is a goth opera that's probably more style than substance, but maybe that's what you're into. We're a little into it. This time, both movies are about evil entities posing as things kids tend to love in order to feed on their souls. The Classic Film: Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) "In a small American town, a diabolical circus and its demonic proprietor prey on the townsfolk” (IMDb.com). Ray Bradbury's script adaptation of his own novel is yet another 80s film that Disney seems content to forget about, but impeccable writing and a great performance by Jonathan Pryce make this movie a must-watch during the Halloween season. The Modern Film: Coraline (2009) "An adventurous 11-year-old girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets” (IMDb.com). Chris & Kelsey are back on that bullshit, this time with two movies about witchy women that put curses on entire bloodlines and where multiple people need a good eye stabbin'. The Classic Film: Black Sunday [La maschera del demonio] (1960) "A vengeful witch and her fiendish servant return from the grave and begin a bloody campaign to possess the body of the witch's beautiful look-alike descendant, with only the girl's brother and a handsome doctor standing in her way” (IMDb.com). Mario Bava's official directorial debut may be beautifully designed and shot, but the story itself is a jumbled mess and just incredibly boring. Sorry. The Classic Film: The Witches of Eastwick (1987) "Three single women in a picturesque village have their wishes granted, at a cost, when a mysterious and flamboyant man arrives in their lives” (IMDb.com). This silly comedy-horror is a lot of fun on its face, but it also surfaces some very intriguing concepts about villainy, spirituality, sexuality, and the plurality of feminine expression. Oh, and it's WEIRD AS HELL. The Modern Film: The Craft: Legacy (2020) "A group of high school students forms a coven of witches” (IMDb.com). A few years later, a film crew uses the now-abandoned Crippen High as the set for a film, but an uninvited guest makes an appearance on the set” (IMDb.com). Return to Horror High is a parody of horror movies, but also not? It's a movie within a movie but there're even more layers? Basically, it's the Inception of horror comedies—an admirably ambitious affair without the chops to hold that lofty title. The Modern Film: School Spirit (2019) "A group of social outcasts stuck in weekend detention is confronted by the school's legendary hauntings” (IMDb.com). The Breakfast Club but "haunted," School Spirit is a low-stakes, campus horror from the Hulu and Blumhouse Into the Dark series that disappoints in how uninspired it is. Famous for being a success story as both an indie and an exploitation horror, the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is both gritty and grounded in a way that is guaranteed to disturb. The Remake: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) "After picking up a traumatized young hitchhiker, five friends find themselves stalked and hunted by a deformed chainsaw-wielding loon and his family of equally psychopathic killers” (IMDb.com). It's pretty much all downhill from here. The Modern Film: Fear Street: Part One - 1994 (2021) "A circle of teenage friends accidentally encounter the ancient evil responsible for a series of brutal murders that have plagued their town for over 300 years. Welcome to Shadyside” (IMDb.com). Part One of Netflix's and R.L.
