Six Hours, Five Strangers, and a Song the Machine Could Not Write | A Music Evolves Conversation with Gregoire Gensollen, Producer and Chief Operating Officer of Tucker Tooley Entertainment

Show Notes The premise sounds like a stunt. Five strangers, one room, six hours, one original song. Meanwhile the show's host sits at a keyboard with a text prompt and half an hour. Grégoire Gensollen, Producer and Chief Operating Officer at Tucker Tooley Entertainment, built that episode of Band of Strangers knowing he could not predict the outcome, which is precisely why he made it. Gensollen comes to this from the traditional side of the business. He grew up in Marseille, trained as an industrial engineer, moved into management consulting, then rerouted through business school at UCLA Anderson into Lionsgate and later FilmNation, where he ran distribution strategy and film finance across a run that included The King's Speech, The Imitation Game, Nebraska, Mud, and Looper. Ten years ago he partnered with Tucker Tooley. What he says he remembers from two decades of that work is not the tooling. It is who was in the room. The origin of Band of Strangers is a documentary called The Unknown Tour, made by two filmmakers who outfitted a bus with a recording studio and drove across the country finding musicians on street corners, in dive bars, and in gospel churches. The pandemic put the idea on hold. When Gensollen and his team picked it up again, they made a decision that would have been unthinkable inside the studio system: skip the networks entirely and release directly on YouTube. Not for reach, but for control of the entire chain, and to protect a show about collaboration from the unscripted television reflex that turns every format into a competition with prize money and manufactured conflict. The constraint that holds it together is the song. Every episode has to produce one, on a clock, or there is no episode. What varies is the entry point. A mariachi band at El Pueblo on Olvera Street laying a first track that hip hop artists in Leimert Park then struggle to find the rhythm inside. Buskers on the Venice boardwalk writing separately. Artists displaced by the Altadena fires building an anthem about rebuilding rather than grieving. Gensollen is candid that the stumbles stay in the cut, because the friction is the story. On AI, he is neither evangelist nor holdout. He describes it as a tool his company will have to use to stay competitive, not against other producers but against creators working alone in their kitchens with the full chain in hand. He also draws a line: optimization, yes. Creative engine, no. His argument is structural rather than sentimental. Prediction models and comparables, the benchmarking method he learned at Lionsgate, tell you where the ceiling is on a category that already exists. A producer's job is to make the thing that does not exist yet. That distinction is the real subject of this conversation. The question is not whether a machine can produce a competent song in thirty minutes. It clearly can. The question is who decides what is worth making, and whether an industry trained on comparables still knows how to recognize the thing it has no comparable for. As a believer, have you noticed that it's often easier to stay in God's will when you're at home? At work, it gets a little dicey. It's at work that people see us, and our decisions can have such impact. Not being in God's will in that setting can be catastrophic.Romans 8:31 tells us, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”Terry Looper is the CEO of a multi-billion-dollar company. Once, he was negotiating a sale and was at the finish line when he realized he hadn't sought God's will in the matter. He stopped, prayed, and read the Word for discernment. He was shocked to find that he wasn't supposed to sell at all!Looper learned his lesson. Being in God's will in every area of our lives is the key. It's great to be godly and led by the Spirit sitting in your den with a Bible open. But it's not less important to be led by the Spirit in the boardroom, or on the floor of the plant where you work.People see you. They see what we do. If we want to be sure success finds us, we'd better make sure we're looking in the right place. There are no shortcuts to fully being in God's will.Let's pray.Lord, you bless us in every area of our lives. Thank you for being on our side, all the time. In Jesus' name, amen. Change your shirt, and you can change the world! The full Loopy Looper recap is here. Bryana and Michael go deep on their individual races. Bryana covers her chaotic morning, from a closed Wawa, blood on the floor, arriving 15 minutes before the start, no water for the first loop, cramping and lung struggles through the first half, a Tylenol-and-Alani turning point at loop six, Ryan's heroic crewing debut (including getting screamed at for the Vaseline), a crotch rocket motorcycle on the race trail, and crossing the finish line on loop 10 in just under 11 hours. Michael recaps his 40-mile day, waking up sick at 3am, acid reflux from allergies spiraling into nausea, Frito rescue attempts, and the decision to DNF with his feet and legs still feeling strong. The crew also gives a shoutout to Vanessa for completing Badwater 135. Berlin Marathon training updates follow: Diana ran 18 miles in Luray, Virginia and is recovering from the crud. Tom is getting ready for Charles St 12. Something Good covers Widows Bay, Cape Fear (TV), Beef Season 2, the Wicker trailer, Little House on the Prairie, and the new Spider-Man. POP OFF ten hours of uninterrupted bubbles and assorted popping. Chill vinyl pops, soda pops, popcorn, bubbles, and a dash of drift. Whether you're studying, working, reading, sleeping, or unwinding after a long day, this immersive ambient soundscape provides the perfect background soundtrack. No talking, no interruptions—just pure poppin' vibes. Ignore the World. _______As I was working on the title for this week's episode, I kept thinking of a comedic moment from media that I couldn't place... maybe cartoons? Where a doofus character keeps obnoxiously shouting “POP OFF!” Oh, where are my manners? Welcome back to the section no one pays attention to. The uncommon ambience episode description! I am Mr. Ambience. What? Do you want me to write up some immersive episode description? I have assembled a collection of popping sounds for ten hours—I don't think anyone wants to read an old doofus' poetic affectation. "You are in a null space and in front of you is a soda bottle, if you drink it you will float..."I would rather be inane in here. When I turned 23, I decided my ultimate mission on earth was to achieve the pinnacle of dumb. Not stupid, I like dumb. Dumb is low stakes—simultaneously funny and unfunny. The Tao of Dumb—thats what I wanted and still strive for. And that's not to say I like that 23-year-old me. I've seen postings on LinkedIn, “I wish I had a Time Machine to go back and tell my younger self, you're ok…” Like that might work for virtuous people—if I had access to my younger self, I would slap the **** out of me. It'd be Looper without murder or hovering motorcycles.“POP OFF!” What cartoon or movie was that from? And then it came to me—like seeing someone pushing an expensive stroller, and you peek in for the cuteness and there's a ****** dog. Or a plastic baby.I'm thinking of Pat Conroy's The Lords of Discipline. “POP OFF” was what the cadre shouted at freshmen when they wanted freshmen to speak... while hazing them at the Carolina Military Institute. If you want to read a visceral horror novel masked as a not particularly compelling mystery (Conroy tells us about the guy who would have evidence on “the ten” early in the book and only a betrayal would force the main character to seek it, mystery solved)—read The Lords of Discipline. And I don't want to undersell the mystery aspect of the book, because it isn't the star. The institution is the star (and i suspect a trauma dump from the author). If Anton Chigurh was an institution of higher learning...The Carolina Military Institute lashes out at those who question it. In the story, the protagonist recalls approaching his dorm during his freshman year, where his orientation leaders are waiting for him at a table. He's a new student and has some questions about what to do after checking in—and is punched for asking. It's a horror novel. Imagine enrolling in a 1970s-era South Carolina military college (that's just getting around to integration) and the ruthless hazing that awaits. This is old school military school terror.Conroy is a favorite author of mine. He gives such a lush rendering to his scenes. The spaces he describes are immersive, making it all the more jarring when transitioning from the opulence and architectural beauty of South of Broad to the engulfing ick of hazing in a scalding-hot shower room. We're heading into spooky season, so if you want to be traumatized this fall, pick up The Lords of Discipline. (A better title would have been, Don't Tell Mom the Institute Murdered Me).PS: If you're looking for a tenuous 90's hiphop connection to this week's episode (that's fun and won't traumatize you) check out Bubblin' by CRU.

Chris Paul and Burning Bright close out the Knives Out trilogy with the newest entry, and Burning Bright makes his case for why this one hits harder than the first two. Expect a genuinely thoughtful breakdown of Rian Johnson as a filmmaker, from Looper to the divisive Last Jedi fallout, and how that history colors the way they watch his work now. The conversation digs into the movie's heavy religious imagery, its take on justice versus vengeance, and a sharp aside about purity tests and groupthink that ties straight back to some very current events in truther circles. There's also a fun tangent on why certain political sides tend to make better movies. Stick around for the sponsor reads, a few subscriber shoutouts, and next week's pick, a 90s political comedy neither host has actually seen before.

One loop. One river. A whole lot of miles. What happens when a runDisney community takes over a relay event in New Jersey and decides the real finish line is friendship, not pace? We're joined by Greg, Jack, Chrissie, Ilyana, and Stephen to recap Loopy Looper weekend, where teams rack up loops, tents turn into mini HQs, and every lap feels like a mix of training run and backyard party. We talk through the details that make a looped relay and ultra event work: simple course navigation, timing-bib handoffs that do not waste energy, and the heat management basics that matter most in August humidity. You'll hear what people actually ate and drank, why salt and pickle juice became MVPs, and how run-walk-run plus strength training can leave your legs surprisingly OK after big mileage. Then Stephen drops the kind of story that makes you sit up straight: a first ultramarathon that's also a 100-miler, finished inside the 30-hour cutoff, with tight aid-station discipline and a clear goal of staying healthy. We also share the glow loop night run, family finish moments, and why so many runners say the solo miles are great but the relay “party” is the point. If you're training for runDisney, curious about relay races, or wondering how to keep motivation high in the offseason, this one's for you. This week on Eavesdroppin' Comedy Podcast, Geordie and Michelle head to Georgia, USA, for a look at yet another McCracken Poston Jr case: Byron 'Low Tax' Looper...When political hopeful Byron Looper changed his middle name to "Low Tax" as a campaign stunt, people thought he was an ambitious yet harmless candidate. Then in 1998, Byron "Low Tax" Looper decided to run for state senate against incumbent Tommy Burks, who was expected to win by a landslide. However, just days before the election, Tommy Burks was found shot dead in his pickup truck and almost immediately, suspicion fell on Byron, who stood to benefit politically from Tommy's' sudden death. Would someone really commit political assassination just to win an election? Was Byron responsible? Listen now to hear how this case played out... So grab a brown lemonade and settle in as the duo chat meeting criminal defence lawyer McCracken Poston Jr, magical biology, why you don't know who you're meeting when you buy online and more, only on Eavesdroppin'. “I was looking for a way to move beyond survival work and into something that could support a real future.” Liz Looper spent years in the cycle of low-wage work, juggling the pressures of motherhood and constant financial uncertainty. She knew she needed a change, but like many, she didn't realize the door to the skilled trades was wide open for her. On today's episode of the America's Work Force Union Podcast, Looper joins us to share her inspiring transition into a first-year apprenticeship with Painters District Council 30 (PDC 30) and the North Central Illinois Finishing Trades Institute (NCIFTI). What we discuss in this episode: The Turning Point: How a simple social media post and support from Goodwill led Liz to a life-changing pre-apprenticeship program. Breaking Barriers: Liz's experience entering a male-dominated field and finding a community of women already thriving in the trades. The Union Advantage: Why the "full package"—including livable wages, retirement security, and essential benefits like pregnancy leave—makes the IUPAT a game-changer for families. A Message to Others: Why it is never too late to start a career that provides a path to the middle class, regardless of your age or background. Liz's story is a powerful testament to the fact that with persistence, the right training, and union support, a stable and purposeful career is within reach.

This episode dives into Looper, Rian Johnson's acclaimed 2012 time‑travel thriller, through a conversation recorded at San Diego Comic‑Con with writer‑director Rian Johnson and his cousin, composer Nathan Johnson. The film's blend of noir, futurism, and moral complexity makes it a standout in modern sci‑fi, and this discussion explores how its world was built—musically, narratively, and philosophically. Looper follows Joe, a contract killer (“looper”) who executes targets sent back from the future. When his future self is sent back to be killed, the loop collapses, forcing both versions of Joe into a collision of motives, ethics, and timelines. The film is known for its grounded approach to time travel, its emotional stakes, and its refusal to offer easy answers.

There's a mystery afoot on today's episode of Script Apart – and that mystery is how you write a film like Wake Up Dead Man, the new Knives Out movie from my guest today, Rian Johnson. How do you craft a whodunit that's simultaneously gripping, hilarious and loaded with weighty reflections on religion's use as a weapon of fear in our current political climate? In the words of Benoit Blanc, it “makes no damn sense” to me, “Compels me, though.”Which is why it was such a treat to ask the man himself. Rian's a filmmaker who you might know from 2005 high school noir Brick, 2008's The Brothers Bloom or the fantastic 2012 sci-fi Looper. He directed one of the best episodes of TV this side of the millennium in the form of Breaking Bad's ‘Fly' episode, and created the brilliant Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne. In 2019, he wrote and directed Knives Out, starring Daniel Craig as a Southern-accented sleuth, which was a huge sensation. A sequel followed in 2022, as part of a major deal with Netflix. And somewhere amid all that, he made a low-budget indie that probably completely passed under your radar because it was barely discussed upon release. Let me just check my notes here… Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Never heard of it personally.Wake Up Dead Man is maybe his most personal and politically-charged film yet, though, as you'll hear in this conversation. Rian's relationship with religion is… well, it's complicated. In this spoiler conversation, he tells me about his lapsed faith and story of growing up in the Church… before leaving it. It's a story that totally altered my perspective on The Last Jedi – a movie about lapsed faith – and shone a fascinating light on this latest adventure in the life of Benoit Blanc. We get into the overlap between the “cult of personality” church figurehead, Wicks, in Wake Up Dead Man and the politicians in our newspaper headlines each morning right now – many of whom position themselves of Christians and preach messages of fear; them against us. And Rian also tells me what the future perhaps looks like for him, twenty years on from Brick – the next steps in his storytelling to come.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. John, Tara, Andrew & Greg break down all the biggest reveals: the morally messy motivations driving each suspect, Blanc's deduction sequences, the shocking mid-film twist that reframes everything, the clever visual clues hiding in plain sight, the political and social satire woven into every scene, and the explosive climax that brings the house (literally or figuratively) down. They explore how Knives Out 3 builds on the franchise's signature style — equal parts mystery, comedy, and commentary — while giving Blanc his most intricate case yet. My guest today is director Rian Johnson, which is exciting for me, because I've been a huge fan of his ever since seeing his first feature film, ‘Brick,'  in 2006. Since then, he's made six more feature films, including ‘Looper‘ in 2012; ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘ in 2017; the murder mystery ‘Knives Out‘ in 2019; and his most recent movie, another in the 'Knives Out' series, ‘Wake Up Dead Man,‘ which is already out in theaters, and comes to Netflix on December 12. I talked to Rian about a piece of music that had a profound impact on him, which was the overture to ‘Das Rheingold‘ by Richard Wagner. For more info, visit songexploder.net/rian-johnson.

With a new Benoit Blanc out for you to devour, we decided it was a great time to talk about the great Rian Johnson. In 2012, Johnson delivered his genre hybrid Looper, set in a dystopic future where, through the magic of time travel, a hitman (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) faces off against his older self (Bruce Willis) … Continue reading "370 – Looper"
