Join Roxy Striar and Tara Erickson as they dive into the twisted, time-bending world of Blumhouse's 2017 dark comedy slasher, Happy Death Day. In this genre-defying film, Jessica Rothe (La La Land, Boy Kills World) delivers a standout performance as Tree Gelbman—a college student trapped in a time loop where she relives the day of her murder over and over again. Each reset forces Tree to confront her past mistakes, unravel the mystery behind her untimely death, and discover unexpected moments of humor amid the terror. Jessica Rothe captivates as Tree, blending vulnerability with fierce determination. Under the direction of Christopher Landon (Freaky, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones), the film masterfully balances spine-tingling suspense with laugh-out-loud moments. Roxy & Tara break down every iconic scene—from the nerve-wracking murder sequences (Driven to Murder Scene, Locker Room Attack Scene, Back in the Loop Scene, Welcome to the Pleasure Dome, & beyond!) to the clever, self-aware twists that set this film apart from traditional slasher fare. These movies aren't necessarily "underrated" (because that means different things to different people, especially depending upon familiarity with the genre), but they're movies that got written off too soon. They deserve a second look; at least we think they do. Let us know if there are any you'd add to the list.

According to Melle, it's officially spooky season so what better way to ring it in than by covering one of the creepiest found footage films in the genre, Paranormal Activity (2007)?  Aside from taking a peek at what made this film so noteworthy and effective, we also wonder about Micah and Katie's economic situational awareness, their frightfully  toxic relationship dynamic, how writer and director Oren Peli "trained" us in reference to the film's scares and of course the film's genius marketing. So yeah, what does happen when you sleep? But better question is what happens to when you listen to a new episode of ScaryCrit? Good things, we hope! I could not think of a better guest for PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES, very explicitly the Latino PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, than my wife Adriana, who is obsessed with ghost shows, ghost movies, and specifically the Mexican cultural connections to the supernatural. My wife is the target audience for this movie, to the point that she essentially was the reason it got made, metaphorically-speaking (we explain on the show). This movie made money, but is super-critically-underrated. For anyone who finds the average two-white-people-move-into-a-spooky-house movie a bit flat and predictable, this is a jolt of life, not just in the cultural setting but in the ambition of the plotting. One of my favorite supernatural movies.  --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dan-benamor/support

I have been extremely lucky in my life as an entertainment personality-type person to have already had the chance to podcast with Chris Landon twice before (most recently about the movie Carrie). Not only is Chris the writer-director of Happy Death Day, Happy Death Day 2U, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, and his new upcoming feature Freaky, co-written with Michael Kennedy, but he’s also one of the most genuinely nice guys working in the industry today. He did nothing to dim that impression when we sat down for this interview where we chat about Freaky, how a pitch rehearsal turned into a full-on partnership, the importance of giving a queer character time to shine, how to turn your home into the perfect Freaky viewing environment, and (definitely most importantly) what we’re watching during quarantine. One thing that we hit on in our discussion is the queer element of Freaky, which is certainly foregrounded: one of the lead characters is a queer teen. But that isn't the only way Freaky, which was written by two gay men, is a queer film. At the center of Freaky is the idea of the body swap, a concept that most would look on as fodder for comedy and wacky impressions. And yes, of course it provides that. But for queer audiences in particular, this can resonate more deeply. There's nobody in the world who hasn't wished their body looked different at some point in their life. But the very notion of being queer means rebelling against the strict parameters that society has set for the type of body you live in, from how you look and who you love, all the way on down to little things like what movies you'll like or what color clothes you should wear. Having an identity that doesn't match the body you were born in obviously comes with the territory for trans and nonbinary folks, but even cisgender queer people ("cisgender" means that your gender identity matches your birth sex) feel societal pressure about their behavior not matching the meat puppet they're piloting around. There are few cis gay men who haven't at least once wish they could have been born with a vagina so that they could publicly hold hands with a guy they're dating without fear of blowback. Or cis lesbians who feel it would have been a damn sight more convenient to have been born with a penis so they wouldn't be ostracized for the mere act of loving. These concepts might seem too highbrow for a simple slasher comedy, but I assure you they're not. The body, and all the expectations placed on it, form the backbone of Freaky. Vince Vaughn might not be delivering a Socratic seminar about queer theory in this movie, but the idea that this film is born from would be treated much differently if it were written by a pair of straight, cisgender people. But enough from me! Let’s hear from the man in his own words as we dissect everything that went into making this wild movie a reality!

The Marked Ones is Christopher Landon’s (Happy Death Day, Happy Death Day 2U) turn in the director’s chair after having contributed only writing and producing credits on the preceding three PA films. Among the many burning questions our fearful friends tackle is whether a film like The Marked Ones can stand alone in a mythology-filled franchise, or whether the film requires context for optimum enjoyment. The answer they find—one they disagree on—is whether this film is enjoyable in any context. Mileage may vary.

It's episode 140... and Man, if I could travel through time, I'd timeportal my ass to the Bahamas. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014) tells the story of three teenagers who experience paranormal activity taking place around their home. Luckily, they film everything with handheld video cameras, so we get to watch it play out in all its predictable, preposterous glory. We discuss the dangers of using the wrong weapons to ambush gang members; the importance of questioning the brief before taking on a 'muscle' contract; and the merits of cycling as a primary means of transport. Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Can I get a kiss on the cheek? The thing is, my cheek is right above my testicles. Another classic film solved by the best movie podcast in the world. The Babadook (2014) tells the story of Amelia, a woman raising her son alone after her husband is killed. Coping with grief, isolation and an unruly child takes its toll on Amelia, and her life begins to be invaded by the sinister leading character from a particularly unpleasant pop-up book. We discuss the benefits of using the emergency services during an emergency; the iconic words 'woof for help'; and the dangers of staying up late watching horror movies. Oh the irony... Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Is this the year for theatrical released horror or what? The new film, Happy Death Day, not only follows in the footsteps of Annabelle Creation, It, Split, and Get Out with great reviews, but it topped the box office its first week as well. Costing only $5M USD, it already has grossed over $36M USD. And again like its predecessors, it is loved by both critic and audiences alike. Theresa Gelbman wakes up in the dorm room of Carter Davis, someone she would not ever be caught dead with. After escaping that circumstance, her day goes as normal until she is murdered while walking down a dark sidewalk heading to a frat party. But she wakes up and finds herself once more in Carter Davis’s dorm room. Now besides the fact that she had been murdered, she now is stuck in a time loop. Ultimately, she decides to try to find out who her murderer is hoping to break out of the loop. Directed by prolific screenwriter Christopher Landon, this follow up to his films, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, has turned out to be a breakout not only for him but actress newcomer Jessica Rothe. Dark Discussions takes a look at this new film and determines whether it lives up to the hype. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. As we did for last year, this year Dark Discussions is discussing some of the top genre films that your co-hosts are looking forward to seeing in 2014. Horror, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, techno-thriller, mystery. You name it, it's coming. Last year looked like it was going to be one hell of a year but by some it turned out otherwise. Yet this year, once again, filmmakers everywhere are whetting the chops of genre fans throughout the world. For those so inclined, here is the short list of what we discuss in the episode. Kevin Smith's Tusk, Eli Roth's Green Inferno, Oliver Blackburn's Random, Ti West's Sacrament, Simon Rumley's The Last Word, and the Joe R. Lansdale penned and Jim Mickle directed Cold in July. Other horror films include Willow Creek, Devil's Due, The Jungle, Hellions, Occulus, All Cheerleaders Die, Scorned, Nothing Bad Can Happen, The Loft, Faults, and Afflicted. Some bigger films spoken of include Joe Hill's Horns, Guardians of the Galaxy, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, Deliver Us From Evil, and the Scarlett Johansson's film, Under the Skin. Many remakes or sequels discussed include The Town that Dreaded Sundown, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Poltergeist, The Purge 2, Rec 4: Apocalypse, Wolf Creek 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Robocop, Dead Snow: Red Vs. Dead, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. But we discuss a few more films including co-host Mike and Eric's opinion on the new Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones which was just released. Plus other films that may be low profile that seem interesting are Joon-ho Bong's Snowpiercer, Sinbad the 5th Voyage, I Frankenstein, the Lance Henricksen film Harbinger Down, Pompeii, Edge of Tomorrow, Big Bad Wolves, Nights of Badassdum, the thriller simply titled +1, and the dark thriller Nurse 3-D (among others). So come and listen to what your hosts think of the new year and whether it will live up to the hype. This week’s episode of Out Now with Aaron and Abe is another Out Now first! Not only are Aaron and Abe in the same location, they are joined by two friends in the same room! Matt Blane and Ken Noffsinger join the guys to discuss Carrie, all within the same room! The energy is as high as ever (with a special cameo from Markus Robinson, discussing Escape Plan)! Additionally, all of the regular segments are present as well, including “Know Everybody”, “Out Now Quickies”, “Movie Call Back”, “Out Now Feedback”, and Trailer Talk (I, Frankenstein and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones). It is great that something like this finally happened, so now it’s time to let everything all come out with as much exuberance as possible. NOTE: Full spoilers for the original Carrie.

It's all things that go bump in the night in the Pop Ninjas annual October Horrorcast. Steve and Dan run through some of the things that give them nightmares. We discuss the Paranormal Activity franchise after the release of the new trailer for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and debate the merrits of an Oxford scientists claims that he may have solved the mystery of the Himalayan Yeti. Looking for a good horror flick to throw in the Blu-ray player this Halloween? Listen to our mini reviews of Escape From Tomorrow, The Ward, American Mary, Insidious 2 and The Purge. There is also some discussion around the new seasons of The Walking Dead and American Horror Story: Coven. We all have THOSE scenes from classic horror movies that stick in our mind. We spend some time running down our top 5 favorite scenes of all time. Finally, we review the latest remake of Brian Di Palma's 1976 classic film, Carrie. Does Kimberly Pierce do justice to the material?
