Chris & Kelsey watch some pretty bad Halloween movies, unfortunately. There is yelling. The Classic Film: Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) "Six years after Michael Myers last terrorized Haddonfield, he returns there in pursuit of his niece, Jamie Lloyd, who has escaped with her newborn child, for which Michael and a mysterious cult have sinister plans” (IMDb.com). It happened. We've been mostly forgiving of the Halloween sequels, but 6—with its magic runes and nonsense plot—is absolutely the worst. The Modern Film: Halloween Ends (2022) "The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode comes to a spine-chilling climax in this final installment of this trilogy” (IMDb.com). Despite giving us something we didn't know we needed (a smiling Laurie Strode), Halloween Ends decides to cap off the entire series by being mostly about some brand new character you don't like killing a bunch of other people you don't like. Chris & Kelsey once again explore the further reaches of experience! The Classic Film: Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992) "An investigative reporter must send the newly unbound Pinhead and his legions back to Hell” (IMDb.com). After the initial classic and the better-than-you-might-expect sequel, the scope of the Hellraiser mythos spreads to the city streets, but has the series jumped the shark yet? The Modern Film: Hellraiser (2022) "A take on Clive Barker's 1987 horror classic where a young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites” (Hulu). A complete refresh of the series, Hulu's Hellraiser joins the small collection of modern reboots that actually aren't that bad. The Classic Film: American Psycho (2000) "A wealthy New York City investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies” (IMDb.com). This satirical indictment of 80s yuppie excess and unchecked male aggression certainly goes places, but is one of those places actually... misogyny? The Modern Film: Green Room (2015) "A punk rock band is forced to fight for survival after witnessing a murder at a neo-Nazi skinhead bar” (IMDb.com). Chris & Kelsey gladly feast on those who would subdue them! The "Original": The Addams Family (1991) "Con artists plan to fleece an eccentric family using an accomplice who claims to be their long-lost uncle” (IMDb.com). The 90s Addams Family managed to modernize the famous horror brood without losing their wit and bite, but does it still hold up? The "Remake": The Addams Family (2019) "The eccentrically macabre family moves to a bland suburb where Wednesday Addams' friendship with the daughter of a hostile and conformist local reality show host exacerbates conflict between the families” (IMDb.com). The Classic Film: Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) "Arriving in Chicago, Henry moves in with ex-con acquaintance Otis and starts schooling him in the ways of the serial killer” (IMDb.com). This first-time outing from John McNaughton is well-directed and features a killer performance from Michael Rooker, but it certainly isn't for everyone. It's what Chris might call "effective stuff" or... "compelling stuff." The Modern Film: Creep (2014) "A young videographer answers an online ad for a one-day job in a remote town to record the last messages of a dying man” (IMDb.com). Chris & Kelsey use a ouija board for their birthdays and resurrect defective children's show animatronics! The Classic Film: Don't Panic (1987) "On his seventeenth birthday, Michael unwittingly unlocks the evil forces of a Ouija board” (IMDb.com). Often touted as the Nightmare on Elm Street of Mexico, this wacky "B" movie is pretty bad but in a very charming way. The Modern Film: The Banana Splits Movie (2019) "A family attends a live taping of The Banana Splits television series, but are forced to survive as soon as the characters go haywire and start a killing spree around the studio” (IMDb.com). There's a great concept, a lot of practical love, and some admirable spirit in this twisted resurrection of an actual 60s children's show, but while it may be respectable, the end product is not really much to look at. The Classic Film: Alison's Birthday (1981) "A young girl is subjected to a reign of terror so that her soul can be transferred to the body of an old crone” (IMDb.com). Alison's Birthday is an Australian mash-up of concepts from other, better movies, but don't miss the charming forest for the trees. The Modern Film: Book of Monsters (2018) "Sophie's 18th birthday becomes a bloodbath when monsters descend upon her house and start to devour the party guests” (Epic Pictures). Book of Monsters is a Kickstarter flick full of nods to horror cliché, but—unlike Alison's Birthday—with none of the charm. Chris & Kelsey pledge school societies where they live by the melodrama and die by the melodrama. The Classic Film: The Skulls (2000) "For Luke McNamara, an invitation to join the prestigious secret college organization, The Skulls, is a dream come true, until murder befalls another student” (Mill Creek Entertainment). The Skulls is not a horror movie, sorry. Instead, it's Baby's First Thriller, like a novel adapted into a children's picture book. But if you stick it out, the extreme goofiness might be enough to have you thinking it's so bad that it's good. The Modern Film: Initiation (2020) "Whiton University unravels the night a star-athlete is murdered, kicking off a spree of social media slayings that force students to uncover the truth behind the school's hidden secrets and the horrifying meaning of an exclamation point” (IMDb.com). Initiation is a strikingly shot and acted drama going through a pretty paint-by-numbers horror plot that becomes a mishmash of incredible, mediocre, and even inept moments, making it difficult to recommend despite being... kinda good, I guess? Crossover classic Predator is the best of both worlds: 80s Action and Killer Monster Horror. If you like both of these things, you'll enjoy Predator. If you don't like either... you'll still enjoy Predator. The Modern Film: Prey (2022) "Naru, a skilled warrior, fights to protect her tribe against one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth” (IMDb.com). The Classic Film: Hatchet for the Honeymoon [Il rosso segno della follia] (1970) "A cleaver-wielding bridal designer murders various young brides-to-be in an attempt to unlock a repressed childhood trauma” (IMDb.com). Hatchet for the Honeymoon may not be Bava's best-known work, but if you're a fan of giallo (or American Psycho), you might not want to miss it. The Modern Film: Ready or Not (2019) "A bride's wedding night takes a sinister turn when her eccentric new in-laws force her to take part in a terrifying game” (IMDb.com). The Modern Film: The Black Phone (2021) "After being abducted and locked in a soundproof basement, a 13-year-old boy starts receiving calls on a disconnected phone from the killer's previous victims” (IMDb.com). The Classic Film: Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) "The Gremlins are back, and this time, they've taken control of a New York City media mogul's high-tech skyscraper” (IMDb.com). Gremlins 2 was a too-late sequel to a pop culture phenomenon that didn't feel like the original at all. But if you can get over that, it sure is a lot of stupid fun. The Modern Film: The Final Girls (2015) "A young woman grieving the loss of her mother, a famous scream queen from the 1980s, finds herself pulled into the world of her mom's most famous movie. The Remake: Firestarter (2022) "A young girl tries to understand how she mysteriously gained the power to set things on fire with her mind” (IMDb.com). It's better than we ever could have expected, but that can't hide its most egregious sin: Uncle Sam is mostly a boring movie. The Modern Film: Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) "Two decades after the first Independence Day invasion, Earth is faced with a new extra-Solar threat. A policeman, drawn into the incident, is forced to solve the mystery in order to save his daughter” (IMDb.com). This sequel to the incredible original is better than you might have anticipated, but there's not a lot of meat on the bones. The Modern Film: Devil (2010) "A group of people are trapped in an elevator and the Devil is mysteriously amongst them” (IMDb.com). M. To do so, he must decipher reality and life from his own dreams, delusions, and perceptions of death” (IMDb.com). Jacob's Ladder is some important and heavy stuff, but that doesn't give it a free pass that its message and its context are almost completely divorced from one another, leading to a dilution of both. The Modern Film: Overlord (2018) "A small group of American soldiers finds horror behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day” (IMDb.com). Time for the fifth entry in both the Friday and Scream franchises! This week, Chris & Kelsey hallucinate famous killers and, by the end, become the killers themselves. The Classic Film: Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985) "Still haunted by his past, Tommy Jarvis, who, as a child, killed Jason Voorhees, is sent to a secluded halfway house in the countryside, where the killing of a young man triggers a brutal series of murders in the area” (IMDb.com). The franchise has abandoned even Jason Voorhees in favor of a new killer and a plethora of f-bombs and tits, but we'll be damned if it's not still a little entertaining. The Modern Film: Scream (2022) "25 years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, Calif., a new killer dons the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past” (IMDb.com). The self-referential style of Scream has now folded in on itself and even the meta is meta. The Original: The Stepford Wives (1975) "Joanna Eberhart has come to the quaint little town of Stepford, Connecticut with her family, but soon discovers there lies a sinister truth in the all too perfect behavior of the female residents” (IMDb.com). Just like Rosemary's Baby, which we love so much, this is yet another Ira Levin story about a woman undone by the selfish machinations of her husband after they move to a new home. Too bad this feminist thriller isn't nearly as effective as that. The Remake: The Stepford Wives (2004) "[Joanna Eberhart] has a hard time adjusting to Stepford's manicured environs and the overly accommodating attitude of the area women. Soon Joanna begins to suspect that something is not right, and she tries to uncover Stepford's secret” (RottenTomatoes.com). The Modern Film: The Happening (2008) "A science teacher, his wife, and a young girl struggle to survive a plague that causes those infected to commit suicide” (IMDb.com). The Happening is famously maligned as confirmation that M. Night Shyamalan's promising star had faded. The Modern Film: Train to Busan (2016) "While a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan” (IMDb.com). The New Kids may be a little silly, but it can also be extremely intense, mainly due to some terrible assault and the fine acting of a young James Spader. Nosferatu, which premiered in Germany on March 4th, 1922, is a classic of horror, silent film, and cinema itself and for good reason. A sort of bastardized version of Bram Stoker's Dracula story, Nosferatu manages to thrill and frighten without speaking a word. The Classic Film: The Lost Boys (1987) "After moving to a new town, two brothers discover that the area is a haven for vampires” (IMDb.com). We absolutely adore this movie and for good reason. It just so perfectly exemplifies a specific style from a specific time that makes Kelsey say, "They were right in the 80s." The Modern Film: Bloodsucking Bastards (2015) "A down-on-his-luck cubicle worker and his slacker best friend discover their new boss is a vampire who is turning their coworkers into the undead.” (IMDb.com). Bloodsucking Bastards is a terrific comedy trapped in the shell of a fairly okay movie. It's certainly not what you might call a great movie, but the moments where it approaches perfection make it worth your time. Chris & Kelsey wrap up the franchise (for now) and get into serious conversations about the function of the proton pack. The Classic Film: Ghostbusters II (1989) "The discovery of a massive river of ectoplasm and a resurgence of spectral activity allows the staff of Ghostbusters to revive the business” (IMDb.com). Ghostbusters II is often maligned for being too kid-friendly and lacking the edge of the original, but it stacks up surprisingly well even if it isn't quite as good. If you think the Ghostbusters franchise isn't for kids, you're fooling yourself. The Modern Film: Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) "When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind” (IMDb.com). Afterlife is actually a pretty good movie (if a little too long) and honors the franchise and Harold Ramis well. So what do you do when it's not a very good Ghostbusters movie? Chris & Kelsey finally find out why he's called Pumpkinhead when his head isn't shaped like a pumpkin! The Classic Film: Pumpkinhead (1988) "After a tragic accident, a man conjures up a towering, vengeful demon called Pumpkinhead to destroy a group of unsuspecting teenagers” (IMDb.com). Famed creature creator Stan Winston's directorial debut is the sort of film that most people outside the general horror fandom probably haven't even heard of, but it garners certain respect among the faithful and for good reason. We wouldn't say it's "stellar" but it's certainly charming and very enjoyable. Oh, and Pumpkinhead be throwin' folks. The Modern Film: A Quiet Place (2018) "In a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing” (IMDb.com). A Quiet Place may be a motherlode for pedants, but to fall down that hole would be to miss the incredible performances and atmosphere that make the movie pretty dang good. Plus, it makes Chris cry. Chris & Kelsey dip their toes into the race discussion before immediately admitting that they don't have the expertise required to discuss it with any authority. It's fun! The Classic Film: Candyman: Day of the Dead (1999) "The Candyman is back, trying to convince his descendent, an artist, to join him” (IMDb.com). Candyman 3—following another location change to Los Angeles this time—isn't good, but it isn't as bad as you might think. It's certainly no Farewell to the Flesh. The Modern Film: Candyman (2021) "A sequel to the horror film Candyman (1992) that returns to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began” (IMDb.com). This new Candyman is an updated take on race relations in America and tries to adapt the Candyman mythos to its modern setting, mostly successfully. Chris & Kelsey spend the last show of the year looking for someone to kiss at midnight. The Classic Film: Angel Heart (1987) "A private investigator is hired by a man who calls himself Louis Cyphre to track down a singer named Johnny Favorite. But the investigation takes an unexpected and somber turn” (IMDb.com). Mickey Rourke gets really melodramatic in probably one of his best roles opposite a Robert De Niro the likes of which you've likely never seen before. Angel Heart doesn't really stick the landing, but it's a beautiful and troubling movie. The Modern Film: Midnight Kiss (2019) "Midnight Kiss follows a group of longtime gay best friends and their straight female bestie as they head to a beautiful desert home to celebrate New Year's Eve. One of their annual traditions is to play a game called Midnight Kiss... [but] the group faces another challenge when a sadistic killer wants in on the game” (IMDb.com). Chris & Kelsey make this holiday season musical! The Classic Film: The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) "Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion” (IMDb.com). This is one of the Christmas movies that we watch every year, and we're still excited to talk about it. The Modern Film: Anna and the Apocalypse (2017) "A zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven—at Christmas—forcing Anna and her friends to fight, slash, and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones” (IMDb.com). Anna and the Apocalypse is passable insofar as it's one of the few musical comedy horrors in existence, but it's a goldmine of a premise that isn't exploited for its opportunities nearly enough. Chris & Kelsey sorta just meander from kill to kill with no real focus or driving force. The Classic Film: To All a Goodnight (1980) "A group of teenagers at a party find themselves being stalked by a maniacal killer in a Santa Claus costume” (IMDb.com). Despite the fact that this movie came out first (just barely), it still manages to feel like it has ripped off tropes from better movies (Prom Night, Terror Train, Friday the 13th, etc.). That's probably because To All a Goodnight is pretty lifeless and uninspired. The Modern Film: The Gingerdead Man (2005) "An evil yet adorable Gingerbread man comes to life with the soul of a convicted killer—this real-life cookie monster wreaks havoc on the girl who sent the killer to the electric chair” (IMDb.com). Subtracting the intro, establishing shots, and the credits, this movie runs less than 60 minutes and it still feels too long. It's okay for a movie to be silly, but it should be clever, too. The Amityville series hasn't quite gone bonkers yet, but this second entry is weird in uncomfortable ways. It's fairly interesting in its execution, but you couldn't say it's great. The Modern Film: Amityville Playhouse (2015) "A teenager and her friends become trapped in a haunted theater with a disturbing connection to Amityville's secret past” (IMDb.com). The Classic Film: Cujo (1983) "Cujo, a friendly St. Bernard, contracts rabies and conducts a reign of terror on a small American town” (IMDb.com). Cujo is a thrilling story that manages to wring a lot of pathos out of a little premise, but will never be as good as the first time you saw it. The Modern Film: Gerald's Game (2017) "When a harmless game between a married couple in a remote retreat suddenly becomes a harrowing fight for survival, wife Jessie must confront long-buried demons within her own mind - and possibly lurking in the shadows of her seemingly empty house” (Intrepid Pictures). Chris & Kelsey are thankful for two more movies that are only tangentially related to the holiday. The Classic Film: Blood Rage (1987), aka Slasher, aka Nightmare at Shadow Woods "A boy kills a man and accuses his twin brother of the murder, and the innocent brother ends up institutionalized while his psychotic twin goes free. 10 years later, the innocent twin escapes, which triggers his brother into killing again” (IMDb.com). This overlooked gem from the slasher boom era of the 80s has more to offer than you might assume at first glance. Creative effects, ridiculous characters, and a killer soundtrack make us wonder why people don't talk about it more often. The Modern Film: Escape Room (2019) "Six strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive” (IMDb.com). It may be all kinds of dumb, but the more authentic escape room touches and playful camerawork still make this movie pretty fun. Just don't expect anything profound or life-changing.
