It's time for a new episode and this week I'm taking a look at the adaptation of Super Massive Game's Until Dawn! Is it really as bad as everyone says that it is? What if your favorite horror game wasn't just fiction? In this chilling episode of Co-op Chronicles, your hosts Blacklabel, Geisha, and Azzilee peel back the curtain on the real-life crimes, conspiracies, and tragedies that inspired some of gaming's most disturbing titles. From the CIA's mind control experiments that shaped Outlast, to Until Dawn's cannibalistic echoes of the Donner Party, and the serial killer inspirations behind Dead by Daylight—this one is not for the faint of heart. We'll uncover the dark truth behind games like Manhunt, Condemned, Doki Doki Literature Club, Postal, and more—revealing just how close horror gaming gets to real-life nightmares. Was Manhunt really linked to a murder? Is Dead by Daylight pulling its killers from true crime files? And how far is too far when it comes to digital terror?Whether you love true crime, urban legends, or just want to know which games might haunt you after the credits roll—this episode dives deep into the unsettling intersection of fact and fear.

A light breather in the relentless summer movie schedule allows John, El'Ahrai, and everyone's favorite special guest star Cati Glidewell to take a look at a couple of smaller pictures this week. "Friendship" and "Until Dawn" come under the tripartite microscope! What a thrill! Plus home picks, questions, answers, and other stuff! You should listen! I have to be honest, though. I have all the hope and ambition in the world. But, when I think about the future, the truth is, I--am--really--scared.

Boston-bestie Mandy Connor returns to talk about four movies. She and Scotty start with the best of the bunch: the truly frightening 2024 Irish mystery-horror film "Oddity," by writer/director Damian Mc Carthy and featuring a standout performance from Carolyn Bracken. They then shift gears with 2020's oddball but impressive indie psychological drama/sci-fi horror movie "Horse Girl," directed by the late Jeff Baena and co-written by star Alison Brie. Things take a marked turn for the worse with this year's "Until Dawn," a severely undercooked and trope-heavy adaptation of the beloved PlayStation game. They finish off with the promising (but ultimately disappointing) "Heretic" (2024), starring Hugh Grant, Chloe East, and Sophie Thatcher, and written/directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Scotty and Mandy also give some love to the recent trailer for "The Long Walk," and Mandy sings the praises of "Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made" (2018). WARNING: Scotty and Mandy tried to avoid major spoilers for most of the movies discussed, but you should proceed with caution nonetheless. To be honest, they didn't try all that hard for "Until Dawn." Welcome, welcome to Indieventure's second-ever episode recorded in-person! Your fabulous trio of hosts recently secluded ourselves once again in a caravan in Yorkshire and this time our resulting nonsense is even more unhinged than last year's "live" episode. What began life, several months ago, as an idea for a fairly straightforward character-led Vault episode has instead brought us here, to Indieventure's Legally Distinct 77th (you'll notice it changes a few times) Annual Indie Game Death Match Battle Royale!* Surprisingly this originally had very little to do with the fact that we're all quite into The Hunger Games and there was a new book out recently, but as you might guess it does come up. So, what's the plan? Well, quite simply, we fed 24 characters representing 24 indie games into a Hunger Games simulator and riffed on the results. I won't list all the contestants here but suffice to say if you've ever wanted to see a touching battlefield romance develop between Big Ron and Ábramar, know how Harold Halibut would emotionally reconcile himself with going on a killing spree once the red mist receded, or see if Tim the Terrible Boy will ever finally get what's coming to him, then I'm really glad that we've found an audience for the highly specific shared sense of humour we unleashed the day we recorded this. The winner has the honour of having their game crowned the best indie game of all time, unless we don't like the outcome, in which case they just get bragging rights. As a disclaimer, I just want to make it very clear that we're all highly media literate individuals who did actually read/watch and understand the point of The Hunger Games, but we also just love a bit that goes on far too long. If you want to sink to our level and try out this ridiculous concept for yourself – maybe at your next dinner party! – we used the BrantSteele Hunger Games Simulator, which also has a bunch of other franchises pre-programmed as well as letting you write in your own characters. We may have realised halfway through that we've slightly uncomfortably aligned ourselves with the Capitol in this episode, but you know what, that only makes it even more appropriate that we end like it was any other regular week, ignoring the screams while we talk about our latest batch of hyperfixations. Rachel has been playing Promise Mascot Agency; Rebecca recently had a video game themed weekend seeing the Until Dawn movie (bad) and attending an Animal Crossing: New Horizons event at a Sea Life Centre (good); and Liam has been reading Intermezzo by Sally Rooney and Saltwater by Jessica Andrews, the latter of whom turned out to have been in his English class at school! Small world. * No indie game characters were hurt in the making of this episode. All involvement of indie game characters was overseen by the Indieventure Association for the Ethical Treatment and Enthusiastic Promotion of Indie Game Protagonists (Except for Tim the Terrible Boy) Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Until Dawn is a popular horror videogame that everyone seems to love with a movie that no one seems to be watching. Why??? Join us for this Matt and Mark Super Informative Investigate Report... for Dummies. We review this new horror film from the director of Lights Out and the Shazam movies that stars character actor darling, Peter Stormare. We praise its craft, inventive storytelling, and physical FX work that leaves little to the imagination. (So, Horror Hounds, you're eating good this week.) Along the way, we also discuss the horrors of scalpers ruining expensive popcorn buckets and Matt finally seeing Revenge of the Sith on the big screen for its 20th anniversary. Scrub ahead to 15:53 if you want to get right to the main Until Dawn review, but just know you'll miss us talking about a very sensitive area of James Cameron's anatomy. PRETTY COOL, RIGHT? While the Xbox console brand continues to wane, Microsoft's wise pivot to third party publishing is already paying dividends. According to recent financial reports, Xbox is now PlayStation's single biggest publishing partner, dominating PSN's very own pre-order and pre-load charts on the backs of Forza Horizon 5, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Doom: The Dark Ages, not to mention strong performance across its brands, from Activision Blizzard's Call of Duty to Mojang's Minecraft and beyond. It's weird, to be sure, but predictable, too: These one-time rivals are now intrinsically linked, with both sides benefiting mightily from this new normal. With Halo, Gears, Fable, and virtually everything else Xbox-related no doubt en route to PlayStation 5 as we move forward, how deep and fruitful can this new, unusual relationship become? Plus: Long-in-development China Hero Project darling Lost Soul Aside gets delayed, Borderlands 4 experiences the extremely rare move-up in release date, Electronic Arts lays off hundreds and cancels projects at Respawn, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is it high-time for Sony to explore asymmetrical sticks for its controllers? Does PC gaming represent an existential threat to the console space? Should Sony tap Chinese mega-studio Virtuos to revive its old IP? Are we willing to endorse the new term "remakester?"Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement.Timestamps: 0:00:00 - Intro 0:22:22 - Girl crying in the bathroom Part 3? 0:23:58 - Hi Jimi 0:24:35 - Sacred Wives 0:26:14 - Best man's speech gone wrong 0:38:04 - nerd slop 0:44:09 - Xbox is PlayStation's top publisher 1:07:11 - Lost Soul Aside delayed 1:13:25 - Borderlands 4 release date moved up 1:21:17 - EA and Respawn layoffs 1:35:38 - Video game sales numbers 1:39:18 - New PS+ essential games 1:49:36 - Split Fiction movie 1:53:23 - Until Dawn original writers not credited in the movie 1:59:07 - Polygon is done, Giant Bomb next likely 2:05:26 - What We've Been Playing 2:07:43 - Marathon 2:34:20 - Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 3:00:05 - Dualsense with asymmetric sticks 3:07:50 - Virtuos remakes 3:15:29 - Remakester 3:20:24 - Goofy games we liked 3:31:42 - PlayStation's future errors 3:39:27 - The best case scenario for the big three going forward Learn more about your ad choices. Synopsis Until Dawn follows Clover and her group of friends as they travel the country following her missing sister Melanie's trail. After meeting a kind old man at a gas station who points them in the right direction, the crew finds themselves waiting out a rainstorm in a spooky abandoned motel. Clover is desperate to find her sister, and clues within the building lead her to think that Melanie was here. All seems to be going according to plan until disaster strikes and our young hip protagonists are plunged into a life-or-death fight with a masked maniac Michael Myers wanna be. Review of Until Dawn I did not know that this was a movie adapting a video game until the movie started with the PlayStation Logo. Having not seen the trailer and bringing zero experience playing Until Dawn into my viewing experience, I think I was set up perfectly. The premise of the movie, which I'm going to spoil now so if you don't want to know skip this part but I assume it gives this away in the trailer and game, is that people who enter the motel are stuck in some sort of hellish time warp, causing them to relive their deaths over and over. The movie did a great job of setting up the characters in the beginning and I was starting to feel very invested in their relationships when suddenly every character except for Clover was killed within 5 minutes. I was baffled and about ready to give this movie a very low score for undermining its own character development, when suddenly I was introduced to the time warp aspect and it all finally made sense. Its a really fun idea, and it has the built-in advantage of being able to pack in lots of fun and gory death scenes without losing its main cast or requiring a ridiculous amount of characters. I felt that the acting was pretty good, the story was far more filled out than most video game movies are, and the themes that emerged towards the end were satisfying. The movie suffers from some of the same things other video game movies like Silent Hill suffer from, such as needing to introduce all of the iconic bad guys without having the time to tell the audience who or what they are. Who is this masked killer? Don't worry about it. He's just evil. Who is this witch? Don't think too hard. She's just one of the bad guys. I enjoyed this movie quite a lot more than I expected to, but it is still far from a perfect film. Score 8/10
