Stuck in a Loop - Happy Death Day vs. Source Code (Replay!)

Friday Night Frightfest

This week on Friday Night Frightfest, we're revisiting an episode about the terrifying and sometimes darkly comedic world of time loops! With the recent release of the Until Dawn, we thought it was the perfect time to dust off this classic comparison between two fantastic films that trap their protagonists in a recurring nightmare: Happy Death Day (2017) and Source Code (2011). Happy Death Day (2017) Directed by Christopher Landon, Happy Death Day puts a slasher twist on the time loop concept. College student Tree Gelbman finds herself reliving the day of her murder over and over again. To break the loop, she must figure out who her killer is and stop them, all while navigating the increasingly bizarre and dangerous repetitions of her final day. It's a clever blend of horror, comedy, and mystery with a charismatic lead performance. Source Code (2011) Directed by Duncan Jones, Source Code takes a more sci-fi thriller approach to the time loop. Captain Colter Stevens, a helicopter pilot, wakes up in the body of an unknown man on a commuter train moments before it explodes. He's part of a top-secret program that allows him to inhabit the last few minutes of a person's life to gather information and prevent future terrorist attacks. Each jump back offers new clues and increasingly complex moral dilemmas. Tune in for a repeat dose of temporal terror!

Bong Joon Ho's new MICKEY 17 takes a lot of big swings, from star Robert Pattinson's vocal affectation to a comedic fixation on “sauce,” all of it in service of big, bold, arguably blunt satire. It all makes for a somewhat messy but highly discussable film, both on its own and in conversation with Paul Verhoeven's STARSHIP TROOPERS, another big swing of a sci-fi satire that aims to entertain as it undermines propagandistic societies where leaders rule by catchphrase, where citizenship is conditional, and where working-class lives are expendable. We dive into all of that, plus space bugs that may not actually be bugs, then offer a Your Next Picture Show recommendation for another MICKEY 17 pairing contender, Duncan Jones' MOON. Cloning has been a staple of science fiction for decades, allowing filmmakers to explore questions of identity, morality, and even power. Let's get into it!Top 5 Clones in Film and TVThe Replicants – Blade Runner (1982) & Blade Runner 2049 (2017)These artificial humans blur the line between man and machine, raising questions about free will and identity. Duncan Jones' Sam Bell – Moon (2009)Sam Rockwell's lonely lunar worker is one of the most emotionally compelling clone characters ever. Dolly the Sheep – Jurassic Park (1993)Okay, not actually Dolly, but the cloned dinosaurs in Jurassic Park are the ultimate cautionary tale about playing God. Life, uh, finds a way!Jango Fett & The Clone Troopers – Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2020)The galaxy's most famous army, these soldiers might share the same DNA, but their individual personalities shine through in the series, making them some of the best-developed clones in fiction.Michael Keaton's Many Copies – Multiplicity (1996)A comedic take on cloning, this underrated film sees Keaton's character create clones to help him manage life—only for things to spiral hilariously out of control.Feature Review: Infinity Pool (2023)From the mind of Brandon Cronenberg (son of body-horror legend David Cronenberg), Infinity Pool is a disturbing and mind-bending thriller that plays with themes of identity, privilege, and morality.James (Alexander Skarsgård) is a struggling writer vacationing at an exclusive island resort with his wife. When they meet a mysterious couple (led by Mia Goth's unsettlingly seductive Gabi), things take a dark turn. A tragic accident leads to James being arrested and presented with a bizarre offer: he can either be executed for his crime or pay to have a clone take his place. This is not one for the kids—Infinity Pool is a disturbing, trippy film that will appeal to fans of Possessor, The Lighthouse, or Under the Skin. It's a psychological descent into madness.Kids Feature: Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2020)Switching gears, we head to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the animated series that not only fleshed out the prequel trilogy but also gave us some of the best storytelling in the franchise. While some early episodes skew young, The Clone Wars matures into one of the best animated series ever. It's perfect for Star Wars fans of all ages, providing emotional depth and epic action. This episode iWe love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! This episode takes us on a journey to the far side of the Moon as we explore Duncan Jones' 2009 sci-fi drama Moon. A film that proves you don't need a massive budget to tell a deeply engaging and thought-provoking story, Moon is an intelligent and emotional experience that lingers long after the credits roll.Moon is set in the near future, where Earth's energy crisis has been solved by harvesting helium-3 from the Moon. The story follows Sam Bell (played masterfully by Sam Rockwell), a lone astronaut stationed at a lunar mining facility, nearing the end of his three-year contract. His only companion is an AI assistant, GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey), whose soothing, ambiguous presence echoes the likes of 2001: A Space Odyssey's HAL 9000—only friendlier.Sam's routine is disrupted when he makes a startling discovery: another version of himself. What follows is a gripping unraveling of identity, corporate ethics, and the very nature of existence. Why It Stands OutSam Rockwell's Outstanding PerformanceMoon is essentially a one-man show, and Rockwell delivers an astonishing dual performance, playing both versions of Sam with nuance and depth. His emotional range—from loneliness to anger to acceptance—is truly compelling.Atmospheric and Thoughtful StorytellingThe film doesn't rely on action sequences or elaborate effects; instead, it builds tension through psychological drama, mystery, and an eerie sense of isolation.Minimalist Yet Effective VisualsDuncan Jones masterfully creates a believable lunar setting with a mix of practical models and CGI. The film's aesthetic feels grounded, reinforcing the loneliness and sterility of space.Ethical and Philosophical DepthMoon raises powerful questions: What makes us human? How do we define identity? Are corporations willing to sacrifice individual lives for profit? These themes give the film weight beyond its sci-fi setting. At its core, Moon is a meditation on selfhood and isolation. Sam's struggle to understand who he is—and whether his memories and emotions are truly his own—makes for an engaging and poignant narrative. The film also critiques corporate greed, exploring the moral dilemmas of cloning and the expendability of workers in the pursuit of efficiency. For fans of intelligent sci-fi like Solaris, Blade Runner, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, Moon is an absolute must-watch. It's a film that encourages discussion, making it perfect for anyone who enjoys movies that challenge conventional storytelling and leave you questioning the nature of existence.Join us as we discuss Moon, its unique take on isolation and identity, and how Duncan Jones crafted a modern sci-fi classic. It's a film that proves some of the most powerful stories don't require grand space battles—sometimes, all you need is a man, a Moon, and a mystery.

The fast-evolving quantum computing phenomenon represents a paradigm shift in how computers process data. Due to its ability to process vast amounts of data and solve complex problems at an unprecedented speed, quantum computing holds great promise for new material discovery through the simulation of physical systems, portfolio optimization in finance, and more. It also poses a significant threat to cybersecurity, requiring a change in how we encrypt our data. Even though quantum computers don't technically have the power to break most of the current forms of encryption yet, we need to stay ahead of the threat and come up with quantum-proof solutions now. If we wait until those powerful quantum computers start breaking our encryption, it will be too late. I had the pleasure of discussing the quantum computing phenomenon and its cybersecurity implications with Duncan Jones, Head of Cybersecurity, at Quantinuum. We discussed the potential threats and opportunities of quantum computing for cybersecurity, as well as its potential to revolutionize various industries. We recognized the need for new algorithms resistant to quantum computing, staying ahead of technological innovations, investing in cybersecurity measures, and prioritizing the migration of sensitive data to quantum-resistant algorithms. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we complete our miniseries on rotoscoped games with part two of The Last Express. We talk about the sweep of history, playing parallel, ending in Vienna and other topics before turning to takeaways. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: To Vienna (Tim), Somewhere after Strasbourg (Brett) Issues covered: different puzzle formats and it still working, not knowing what to do with the bug, diverting to The Murder on the Orient Express plot, putting a spin on the old plots, Tim has a favorite tea, political violence in games, world history on the march, the tension of violence in political discourse, the legendary cities it passes through, avoiding caricature for the most part, the melting pot, strong writing and performances, naturalism and theatrics, countries shifting, passing through empires, playing parallel versions of the story, trying the wrong rooms, the medical issue of the older Russian, the importance of time, games that are watertight, the appearance of simulation, adjusting the state machine, wondering whether the game knows what you know, the dog and having to get it into place, a consistent character, committing to a different sort of game and the downstream consequences, comparing with more abstract games, adding constraints, pulling in things from other media, making a big leap forward in realism and groundedness, the talent for keyframing grounded animation, getting metrics and level design constraints from the animation, deeper and different storytelling, teasing an interview, Gogo and Umaro and tuning your player experience. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: MYST, Agatha Christie, And Then There Were None, CSI, Peter Ustinov, Kenneth Branagh, Sherlock Holmes, Scream, Wes Anderson, The Darjeeling Limited, Far Cry (series), Sierra, LucasArts, Anton Chekhov, Karateka, Deadline, The Witness, The 7th Guest, Prince of Persia, Firewatch, The Walking Dead, Jake Gyllenhaal, Source Code, Rian Johnson, David Bowie, Duncan Jones, Edge of Tomorrow, Michelle Monaghan, Groundhog Day, Bill Murray, Deathloop, Prey: Mooncrash, Day of the Tentacle, Vienna Waits for You, A Death in Venice, Another World, Super Mario (series), Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, Fire and Ice, Eric Chahi, Jordan Mechner, Ray Harryhausen, Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Phantasmagoria, Police Quest, Grim Fandango, Akira Toriyama, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Dragonball Z, Ashmann86, Em, Final Fantasy VI, Rage, Bethesda Game Studios, Kingdom Hearts III, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode delve into the relationship between gaming and the movies, with help from a crack squad of video game experts. Mark is joined by pop culture critic Kayleigh Donaldson, who helps guide him through the messy and complicated history of game adaptations on the big screen, from Super Mario Bros to Doom. He also speaks to Duncan Jones, director of the first video game film to cross $400m at the international box office - 2016's Warcraft. They discuss the challenges of adapting the cult role-playing game for a cinema audience. And Ellen asks the big question of whether video games can be considered an art form on the same level as film. To help her on her quest, she first speaks to critic Kambole Campell about why games get called 'cinematic' and whether the gaming world has auteurs. Ellen then talks to cinephile and game director Sam Barlow, about his highly successful - and highly innovative - video games Her Story, Telling Lies and Immortality. Sam explains how experimental directors like Nicolas Roeg and Peter Greenaway have influenced his work, which employs live footage of actors, rather than motion capture or graphics. Madi: Once Upon a Time in the Future is an intriguing experiment in producing a graphic novel. A science fiction story cowritten by film director Duncan Jones and comics veteran Alex de Campi, the comic's visuals were drawn and colored by around two dozen artists so that the book could come out sooner rather than later. Essentially a road trip story, the different artists drew various portions of the adventure so they could leave their visual stamp on the world of Madi. It's an intriguing experiment in theory, but how does the final product hold up in execution? Join us as we examine Madi: Once Upon a Time in the Future! Thanks again to Corey J. Nick and Martin are back to prove the haters that the show still exists! On this episode, we give you the recipe that make this magic work. Add a little bit of Netflix's Sandman to a little bit of Sword of X, then throw in a smidgeon of Amazon's Paper Girls, a hint of The Wheel of Time, chop up a little Duncan Jones and movie statistics, stir in the Power Wash Simulator, dump in a whole lot of Prey and Predator discussion, and you get...another episode of the flagship podcast of the entire internet...The Nerdy Legion (with Nick Wetmore). You can support this show by visiting our merch store, directly through Patreon, or by leaving us an Apple Podcasts review.

Believe it or not, this is the 107th time we've recorded this episode about SOURCE CODE, and the first time we've been able to successfully upload it and thus finally break the seemingly infinite time loop we've been caught in. And yes, if you're wondering, we're starting a new miniseries all about...time loops! SOURCE CODE was Duncan Jones' second feature and it came out at a time when gimmicky, high-concept sci-fi was a thing. Remember LIMITLESS and THE ADJUSTMENT BEAUREU? They all came out in same year. The question is: was SOURCE CODE the best of them? What are your thoughts?

Hello nomads, and welcome to The Moon. We're going back to 2009 to discuss the debut film of director Duncan Jones called Moon. This is a smaller film, but big on story and performance. To keep things interesting we brought along Nomad Dave's brother Paul to break things down.First, do you even know who Sam Rockwell is? If not, he's a great actor and does so much with so little in this movie. Also, how long has the character Sam been on the Moon by himself? What did you think of GERTY? And you should totally see how they made this flick.Stick around until the end for a game of Moon trivia. Not the movie, the actual Moon in the sky ;)Safe travels, nomads.
