What is the resting heart rate of the Christian life? From a biblical and Reformed perspective, it is union with Christ. By faith, we are in Christ, and everything that is ours is his. Through union with Christ, we are justified, sanctified, and glorified. And, we are also united to one another in Christ. God has given us the church, the ministry of the word, and the sacraments. These, too, are about our union with Jesus. Jon and Justin consider all of these things in today's episode. Semper Reformanda: Jon and Justin continue to talk about the inherently corporate nature of the Christian life, as well as how union with Christ produces unity in the church. This is the first message in our new series accentuating what we call the "One Another" commands of the New Testament. If we love well, consistent with these one another commands, we become a winsome display of hope in Christ to a discouraged and fearful world. Teacher: Matt Boyers.
Ephesians 2:1-10 1. We were dead in sin; but now we are alive in Christ 2. We were following the broken society; but now we are following a loving Father 3. We were enslaved by satan, but now we are adopted by God “To be in Christ is to be personally and vitally united to Christ, as branches are to the vine and members to the body, and thereby also to Christ’s people. For it is impossible to be part of the Body without being related to both the Head and the members...to be a Christian is in essence to be ‘in Christ’, one with him and with his people.” Stott 22-23 God exists as three persons in loving union so deep they are one person. Division goes against the very nature of who God is—Father, Son, and Spirit. "I am in my father, and you in me, and I in you." John 14:20
Read Ephesians 3:14 - 4:12 This is the first sermon of a four-part series on the Communion of the Saints. Following the Westminster Confession of Faith, chapter 26 paragraph 1, this sermon looks at the basis of our communion - our union in Christ.
