In 1922 a commission made up of prominent citizens—six Black men and six white men appointed by the governor of Illinois—issued a report about the 1919 Race Riot entitled The Negro in Chicago: A Study on Race Relations and a Race Riot. Eve Ewing's dazzling poetry collection, 1919, excerpts small bits from the report as epigraphs for each poem, comments like “…the presence of Negroes in large numbers in our great cities is not a menace in itself,” and “the sentiment was expressed that Negro invasion of the district was the worst calamity that had struck the city since the Great Fire.” Today the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project (CRR19) aims to ignite conversations about white supremacy in Chicago and around the country and the world. Formally launched on the 100th anniversary of the riot, CRR19 remembers the worst incident of racial violence in the city's history, and the events that swept the city and set the framework for racial segregation to this very day. We're joined by Franklin Cosey Gay and Peter Cole, co-directors of CRR19 on the eve of their annual commemoration and slow-rolling south-side bike tour.

The 1908 Race Riot is a dark moment in Springfield's history, yet many grew up not knowing about the tragedy that set back Black businesses and families for many years to come. President of the Springfield Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Ken Page spoke to Community Voices about the riot and how its legacy continues today. He also shared his experience growing up in Selma, Ala. during the civil rights movement and how it led him to the ACLU.

A week from the riots in Ballymena, the dust is beginning to settle. The violence has been universally condemned, but is it enough to condemn the rioters without a conversation on immigration? Her careers of social worker and writer are intricately intertwined; all of her novels explore social issues like addiction, homelessness, and mental illness. Carla is a social worker, advocate and author whose last novel, The Stone Necklace (about grief and addiction) won the 2017 Women's Fiction Writers Association Star Award for Best Novel and was selected the One Community Read for Columbia SC. In her new novel, The Orchid Tattoo, Carla uses crime fiction to delve into the complex topic of human trafficking, a horrific crime affecting thousands of victims around the world—and in her native South Carolina. The main character, Caleb Knowles, is a social worker who often consults with criminals and suspects for the police department. This time, the criminal is a teenager, and the crime stems from racial mistreatment. The more Caleb looks, the more he finds. Discrimination in the community. Discrimination in the police force. This phrase captures the way news can be manipulated, reflecting the political leanings of various stations, much like the concept of "Kayfabe" in professional wrestling—where the audience is kept in the dark about the predetermined nature of the matches.    In the wake of recent riots in the UK, this manipulation of information has come to a head. Following the July 29th brutal stabbing of three young girls attending a Taylor Swift-themed yoga session in Southport, a flurry of misinformation swept across social media. It was initially reported that their attacker was a 17-year-old Muslim immigrant, fueling racial tensions. In reality, the assailant was neither Muslim nor an immigrant; he was born in Wales. However, these facts were quickly overshadowed by a wave of false narratives propagated by far-right influencers like Tommy Robinson and Andrew Tate.    As mainstream media struggled to keep pace with these online gossip networks, the lines between verified news and baseless rumor blurred, creating a dangerous cycle of misinformation. This raises critical questions: Do we trust the media to tell us the truth, or simply what we want to believe? What are the deep-seated roots of racial tensions between newly arriving immigrants and the people of England? How will the UK government respond to the rioters who attacked innocent immigrants and destroyed businesses under the guise of "Save the Children"?   These issues echo the moral panics of the past, such as the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, where children were used as a prop to push draconian legislation. Cops & School Discipline, Pew Research Pushback   Oklahoma's Supreme Court struck down a lawsuit from the last known survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre who had sought reparations from the city for victims and their descendants. The Pew Research Center recently put out a report saying that Black Americans believe in "racial conspiracy theories."  Well, that report is getting some pushback.  We'll talk to the  President and CEO of JustLeadershipUSA about why using such terms can be dangerous.  Illinois' 3rd largest school district is accused of using cops for minor disciplinary actions against black students.  We'll talk to the attorney who filed a complaint alleging racially discriminatorily handling of those students. On Tuesday, lawyers for the two remaining survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre appealed to the state's Supreme Court to allow a reparations case to move forward. The two survivors, Mother Randle and Mother Fletscher, would like their day in court, and a chance to seek justice for the horrific crimes committed against them and their community– with involvement from Tulsa authorities, by the way.
