Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV) And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “ALL AUTHORITY has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and MAKE DISCIPLES of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, TEACHING THEM to observe all things that I HAVE COMMANDED you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. As a disciple of Jesus, for us to be effective, we've got to acknowledge GOD-ORDAINED AUTHORITY REQUIRES RESPONSIBILITY. In other words, when we fail to exercise our God-ordained authority, we basically limit God's predestined plan.

In Season 15 episode 2, Elixir Wizards Sundi Myint and Charles Suggs chat with Micah Cooper to talk about distributed systems, data replication, and what it actually looks like to build these ideas in Elixir. Micah shares his journey from Ruby to Elixir and walks us through Visor, a library he's building based on the Viewstamps replication algorithm. Inspired by systems like TigerBeetle, Visor explores how you can replicate state across nodes using GenServers, giving you fault tolerance and recovery without relying entirely on traditional database patterns. We talk about the difference between distributed systems and data replication, where things tend to get misunderstood, and what changes when you start thinking about state this way. The conversation also touches on event sourcing, tradeoffs in system design, and how Elixir's distributed model makes some of these concepts more approachable than you might expect. Along the way, we talk about building for curiosity, experimenting with new ideas, and how projects like this push the ecosystem forward. Topics discussed in this episode: Building Visor and working with the Viewstamps replication model Replicating GenServer state across nodes Distributed systems vs. data replication Lessons from TigerBeetle and financial system design Event sourcing challenges and tradeoffs Rethinking database-first architectures Snapshotting, recovery, and fault tolerance The role of Elixir's distributed model Experimentation, learning, and building for curiosity Links mentioned: Micah's GitHub https://github.com/mrmicahcooper Micah's GitLab https://gitlab.com/mrmicahcooper The Visor repository: https://gitlab.com/mrmicahcooper/visor Visor Hex Package https://hex.pm/packages/visor Ruby on Rails https://rubyonrails.org/ Phoenix LiveView Framework https://www.phoenixframework.org/ Zig Programming Language https://ziglang.org/ TigerBeetle https://tigerbeetle.com/ TigerBeetle internal docs https://github.com/tigerbeetle/tigerbeetle/tree/main/docs/internals The BEAM https://www.erlang-solutions.com/blog/the-beam-erlangs-virtual-machine/ GenServer https://hexdocs.pm/elixir/GenServer.html Apache Kafka https://github.com/apache/kafka RabbitMQ https://www.rabbitmq.com/ Redpanda https://www.redpanda.com/ SQL https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/structured-query-language Kubernetes https://kubernetes.io/ YAML https://yaml.org/ Nomad Workload Orchestrator https://developer.hashicorp.com/nomad Flutter https://flutter.dev/ Commanded https://hexdocs.pm/commanded/Commanded.html Go Programming Language https://go.dev/ Clojure Programming Language https://clojure.org/ Nebulex https://hexdocs.pm/nebulex/Nebulex.html Mnesia https://www.erlang.org/doc/apps/mnesia/mnesia.html Cachex https://hexdocs.pm/cachex/Cachex.html libgraph https://hexdocs.pm/libgraph/Graph.html Horde https://hexdocs.pm/horde/Horde.Registry.html NocFree split keyboard https://www.nocfree.com/ Micah's LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/micah-cooper-4a737560/

The USS Jeannette expedition (1879–1881) is remembered as one of the most tragic and compelling stories in maritime history, blending ambition, endurance, and survival against the odds. Financed by James Gordon Bennett Jr. and undertaken by the United States Navy, the expedition aimed to reach the North Pole via the Bering Strait in search of the theorized open polar sea. Commanded by George Washington De Long, a crew of 33 men departed San Francisco in 1879, only to become trapped in Arctic pack ice shortly after entering the polar region. For nearly two years, the Jeannette drifted helplessly across the frozen expanse before being crushed by ice in 1881, leaving the crew stranded on the drifting floes of the East Siberian Sea. What followed was a harrowing struggle for survival, as the men attempted to reach Siberia in three small boat parties after becoming separated in a violent storm. Ultimately, only 13 survived, while De Long and many others perished in the unforgiving Siberian wilderness. The historical record was preserved through De Long's recovered logbooks, and this story of polar exploration, shipwreck, and human endurance offers an exhaustive account of one of history's most ill-fated Arctic expeditions. Much of the research for this 2-part series comes from George De Long's extensive records. We're continuing our visit with pastor, teacher, author, and theologian Dr. William R. Downing. But, as he's been sharing, his life didn't start out that way. In fact, he loved the great outdoors, and studying ancient languages; searching the Scriptures was not in his plans - a marvelous example of how the Lord can redirect our lives for His purposes!
God's urgent call to speak hope to his people. We learn how true comfort is not mere soothing words or soft music. The "God of all comfort" provides forgiveness for sin, the end of hardship, and the promise of restoration in Christ. This is strong yet tender, powerful yet gentle. We receive encouragement, renewed hope, and God gives this to us, so that we may comfort others.

We're looking at Sudan, which has entered its fourth year of a civil war this week. But, unlike in Gaza, the violence and famine there has struggled to break through headlines in the U.S. We talk to Sudanese journalist Isma'il Kushkush, political scientist Scott Strauss, Sudan expert Alexander de Waal, and political scientist Mai Hassan. To manage podcast ad preferences, review the links below:See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.NPR Privacy Policy

Messianic Apologetics editor John McKee reviews the extremely difficult topic of genocide, seemingly commanded by God, within the Torah. How is any Bible reader to best sort through this matter? This is then followed by a review of important stories and issues from the past day or so, largely witnessed on social media.
God takes the reluctant hero and commands HIM to do the impossible! This experience Moses had with God was so powerful, he could not refuse to obey! If only our encounters with God were as powerful and life-changing as this man's was! BUT after God commanded Moses, He warned him that Pharaoh would NOT listen to him and would NOT release Israel! What a shock! The only preparation for Moses was that he had met with God in the fire. Now he has a job he doesn't want – and God says, Pharaoh will NOT do what you ask! God actually says, I will MAKE him refuse you! This is an amazing story – it changed my life! And it can change YOUR life! The only qualifications Moses had were the fire and the command of God! And with those two things the whole life of Moses – and the nation – were transformed!
"And you shall command ..." the week's Torah portion starts. Commands, vows, and promises powerfully elevate ideas by eliminating alternative options. A thing is the only thing we may do, or must not do. Beyond his - as God did with Moses this week – He also chooses to put us as humans into positions in which we must issue commands, and make or stand by promises or vows. We explore this way of God communicating with us in Torah Portion, "Tetzaveh."

1. The Commanded Prayer 2. The Reason for It 3. It's Sure Answer In Luke 10:2, Christ calls His followers to pray for more laborers in the great harvest of souls, emphasizing that while the spiritual field is ripe and vast, the number of those sent to gather it remains few. This urgent plea is rooted in the reality that the kingdom of God is near, and its proclamation requires faithful messengers who are chosen, equipped, and sent by Christ Himself, not by human effort. The sermon underscores that the harvest has been prepared through centuries of divine preparation, and its gathering is both a present and eternal work, sustained by the Holy Spirit through the preaching of the gospel. Though the labor is difficult and the world opposes it, believers are called to persevere in prayer, knowing that the Lord of the harvest is sovereign, compassionate, and faithful to answer such prayers. Ultimately, the call to pray for laborers is not merely a duty but a profound expression of gratitude and dependence on God, who alone can and will send forth those needed to complete His work.
In God's original design, we were made to work with God and rest in God. But in a fallen world, and in our fallen condition, our relationship to both is broken. We mismanage our emotions, mismanage our relationships, mismanage our time, because we've mismanaged our relationship to Him. Exodus 20:1-11
You Are Commanded to Be Hospitable Men Who Entertain Angels Part 2 Episode Summary Hospitality is not optional. It is commanded. In Part 2 of Men Who Entertain Angels, Pastor Joseph Spurgeon moves from definition to duty. This episode walks through the Ten Commandments, the case laws of the Old Testament, and the witness of Scripture to show that hospitality is not softness. It is strength under authority. Biblical hospitality is not lawless kindness. It is ordered love. It welcomes, provides, and protects under the rule of God. It does not celebrate sin. It does not surrender truth. And it does not abandon responsibility. This episode exposes the modern counterfeit. A version of hospitality that tolerates evil, rejects authority, and calls compromise compassion. That is not biblical. That is rebellion dressed up as virtue. Instead, men are called to lead. To open their homes with discernment. To protect what is under their roof. To provide for those in need. To uphold truth while extending mercy. Hospitality flows from obedience. It requires backbone. It requires clarity. It requires men. If you want to understand how God commands hospitality and how to actually practice it, this episode lays it out. Fought from 31 May to 1 June 1916 in the North Sea, it was the largest naval engagement of the First World War and the only full-scale clash between Britain's Royal Navy Grand Fleet and Germany's High Seas Fleet. Commanded by Admirals Sir John Jellicoe and Sir David Beatty for Britain and Vice Admiral Reinhard Scheer and Admiral Franz von Hipper for Germany, the battle unfolded through a series of dramatic encounters involving battlecruisers and dreadnought battleships. Subscribe to Alli's New Substack - Wise Woman Method You don't need confidence to start. You need evidence. Tiny actions. Brave reps. Faithful little steps that give your brain something solid to hold onto. Proof that says, We've done hard things before. We can do this again. Confidence isn't the prerequisite. It's the fruit of showing up long before you feel ready. Most of us stay stuck because we're waiting to feel qualified, healed, calm, or magically fearless. We dress it up and call it wisdom, strategy, or “just praying about it a little longer.” But deep down, we know the truth: that perfect, confident moment we're hoping for never actually arrives. Confidence doesn't get you moving. Courage does. Confident women don't start being confident. They start wobbly, unsure, and a little sweaty. They take the next right step anyway. Over time, they build a history of bravery. A stack of real-life evidence that whispers, I survived that uncomfortable thing. I can do the next one too. And that evidence, not a quote or a pep talk, is what finally grows confidence that lasts. Today on the Daily Nugget, Mike digs into Jesus' call to love—love God, love your neighbor as yourself, and love one another. Tomorrow, we'll take the next hard step and talk about loving our enemies. This kind of love isn't partial or compartmentalized. It's not just part of us Jesus wants—it's all of us.
Today on the Daily Nugget, Mike talks about Jesus' command to worship Him, drawing from John 4 and the triumphal entry where Jesus intentionally orchestrates worship as He enters Jerusalem. He shows that worship is not something Jesus merely receives when it happens naturally—it's something He invites, commands, and even arranges, because it rightly reveals who He is. In both moments, Jesus calls people to respond to His true identity with hearts fully turned toward Him.

GENERAL SPAATZ AND THE ETHICS OF BOMBING Colleague Evan Thomas. The conversation turns to General Carl "Tooey" Spaatz, who commanded the air war in the Pacific and demanded written orders before dropping the atomic bomb. Unlike the pragmatic Curtis LeMay, Spaatz was a proponent of precision bombing and was deeply troubled by the killing of civilians. The segment recounts the execution of the atomic missions, noting that while the Hiroshima drop went smoothly, the Nagasaki mission flown by Charles Sweeney was "snake bit," plagued by fuel issues and cloud cover that nearly caused the mission to fail. RichardRichard Blazer and the Manhunt for the Thurman Rangers — Patrick K. O'Donnell — Richard Blazer, a skilled manhunter, commanded the Blazer Scouts, utilizing Jesse Scouts tradecraft. Operating in rugged West Virginia, they functioned as the first modern hunter-killer team, pursuing the ruthless bushwhackers, the Thurman brothers. Blazer's unit specialized in detective work and lightning raids, eventually operating under General Averell for strategic reconnaissance missions.
Rommel was increasingly critical of Hitler's flawed personality and his callousness regarding troop lives, ultimately dying because he was a respected military professional who commanded the loyalty of the Wehrmacht. Patton repeatedly displayed abusive behavior toward subordinates, physically and verbally, dating back to WWI. While this behavior was problematic, it was also integral to his impetuous, risk-taking style that made him a great armored commander. Montgomery earned the lasting respect of his peers, despite interpersonal conflicts, exemplified by Omar Bradley's simple note, "thanks," left on his grave. Retry
1. JOSEPHUS AND THE SIEGE OF JODAPATA Guest: Professor Barry Strauss The Jewish revolt against Rome, starting in 66 AD, is primarily chronicled by Josephus, a leader of the revolt and later historian. Josephus commanded the defense of Jodapata against General Vespasian. After defeat, Josephus survived a mass suicide pact, surrendered, and convinced Vespasian not to kill him by predicting he would become Roman emperor. The rebels were inspired by previous victories like the Maccabees. 1922 GAZA
Prize Greed and the Abandonment of Barnard Guest: Eric Jay Dolin Charles Barnard offered the British castaways a humanitarian deal: rescue them in exchange for salvaging the Isabella. This accord was shattered when HMS Nancy, commanded by Lieutenant William Peter D'Aranda, arrived. D'Aranda, seeking personal fame, immediately disregarded the agreement, prioritizing personal financial gain through the prize system, which was widely viewed as "semi-piracy." D'Aranda seized the Nanina as a prize and declared the Americans prisoners of war. Crucially, D'Aranda callously abandoned Barnard and four others (including three British) who were ashore hunting food for the entire group. Marooned for 534 days, Barnard's survival hinged on the help of his dog, Cent, who was vital for hunting powerful, four-tusked wild boars.
