Bald eagles and peregrine falcons in New York State are in danger. As reported by WXXI's Veronica Volk, both species were pushed to the brink of extinction by habitat loss and the pesticide DDT. Thanks to conservation efforts in recent years, their populations have grown, but eagles and falcons are still at risk. Some of the birds could be in your own backyard. This hour, our guests help us understand the threats facing local birds of prey and how humans are helping or hindering their survival. Our guests: Veronica Volk, senior producer and editor for WXXI News Amy Mahar, biologist in the Bureau of Wildlife for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation June Summers, president of the Genesee Valley Audubon Society
We meet our next guest, Veronica Volk on the back deck of our cool little Airbnb. Veronica is one of our first international guests. She grew up in St. Petersburg, Russia, where she studied sociology and Moscow found herself as a rotary exchange student in Alaska where she stayed for 3 1/2 years made her way to New York City and ultimately fathers love to New Hampshire. Her spiritual journey is quite interesting, because in Russia, when she was growing up, there was no religion. It was frowned upon and is a university student really not even allowed to go. And now, in this part of her life, she's on that spiritual journey, and opening herself up and connecting with the universe. She's found the law of attraction and she's got comfort in that. And through her journey of love, she shares that her dog has taught her how to love unconditionally. Tune in to Veronica story, and hear the journey of a young Russian girl, a city girl, making her way across the world, finding her place. Veronica Volk spends her days impressing me and her colleagues with her journalism and ethical reporting on WXXI. Yes, I can bet you that she cringed when she read those words, but they are true. Veronica is kind of journalist that we need in our world, where journalism and media are in the crosshairs. Join me in a conversation with the host of WXXI News's Podcast Ear Shot. (Full Disclosure, ROC Vox is an underwriter for that podcast, but I tried to get her on my podcast long before that show was introduced.)
This week on Ear Shot: Some physicians and patients believe racism is a factor in the historical underfunding of sickle cell disease research and treatment. Plus, Fringe Fest is in full swing! CITY's Rebecca Rafferty and Daniel Kushner join WXXI's Jeff Spevak and Veronica Volk to talk about the festival.

Veronica Volk, reporter from WXXI in Rochester, NY is my guest and we talk about the podcast she co-hosted (with Gary Craig from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle) called "Finding Tammy Jo". This story is an amazing one about a young victim of murder in western New York and the search for her identity and killer. Told across 8 episodes, "Finding Tammy Jo" tells the tale of who this young woman was and the search to learn what happened to her back in 1979. Veronica tells us her story about joining WXXI, the origin story of the podcast, working with Gary, interviewing these guests and the local communities reaction to this amazing show they have created! It's a quick, but required listen, in my opinion! If you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting TPD on Patreon! Some may say the debut of The Little podcast "Movies and a Microphone" is "irrational." That's because host Scott Pukos -- along with guests James Battaglia and Jeff Rusack -- discuss Woody Allen's Irrational Man, including the film's dark turn and a connection to Rochester. Produced by Veronica Volk. "Movies and a Microphone" is brought to you by The Little Theatre and WXXI.
