We spoke to Jon Flower, Director of the play "The Cottage" by Sandy Ruskin, which is the Omaha Premier of this play by the Bellevue Little Theatre! This play hit Broadway in 2023 so now is your chance to see it! Similar to the energy of "Noises Off" it is a prop-heavy and fast paced show, set in 1923 Britain. Great for a date-night show, it is recommended for those 17 and over as it does deal with some adult subject matter, so bring your partner and come out and see his hilarious play! You may have to see it twice to see things you may have missed the first time! Summer movie season is officially here with a lineup of blockbusters, horror titles, and indie gems. The summer season will largely be defined by "The Odyssey" — Christopher Nolan's epic follow-up to his Oscar-winning 2023 film, "Oppenheimer." The father of the summer blockbuster, Steven Spielberg, is also back with "Disclosure Day," a new sci-fi romp. Another seasonal trend? Summer horror. Indie titles ("Backrooms," "Leviticus") from up-and-coming directors who delight in the dark terrors of the human mind vie to become the year's surprise hits. His “About the Author” said he'd been a successful playwright so I couldn't figure out why his novel about an actress should be so utterly devoid of any verisimilitude about life in the theatre. There's not a single writer character in it until the very end and the actress is never in rehearsal, never onstage and we never see much interest in her work. We just hear about what an amazing actress she is and then watch her get massages and entertain people in her dressing room.To keep reading A Book Called Theatre visit the Songs for the Struggling Artist blog. Little Theatre on the Bay's latest play is "Ken Ludwig's Moriarty: A New Sherlock Holmes Adventure," directed by Jeremy Conway and Talis Slatick at the Liberty Theatre.
Setting the Scene Winchester Little Theater is abuzz with excitement as the cast and crew prepare for their latest production, "Wait Until Dark." In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael sits down with director Joette Orndorff, actors Avery Busch and Tim Bambara to discuss the journey from auditions to opening night. Their lively conversation offers a behind-the-scenes look at the passion, teamwork, and creativity that drive community theater. Directing with Vision and Heart From the outset, Joette's enthusiasm for "Wait Until Dark" is unmistakable. She shares how the play's suspenseful plot and complex characters first captivated her in college, fueling her long-standing dream to direct it. Joette explains the unique challenge of staging a psychological thriller in an intimate venue, where the audience's proximity amplifies every emotion and twist. She emphasizes her collaborative approach, striving to create a supportive environment where each cast member feels empowered to shine. Actors Embrace the Spotlight Transitioning to the actors' perspectives, Avery recounts her whirlwind audition for the role of Gloria. Despite last-minute nerves, Avery's determination and love for theater shine through. She candidly discusses the anxiety and exhilaration of performing, as well as the personal growth she's experienced on stage. Meanwhile, Tim, who takes on the role of antagonist Harry Roat, reflects on the thrill of exploring a darker character. Drawing on his background as a therapist, Tim describes how he channels empathy and self-awareness into his performances, making each role a unique challenge. Building a Theater Family Throughout the conversation, the guests highlight the strong sense of community that defines Winchester Little Theater. Joette and Janet both stress the importance of ensemble work, where every participant—on stage or behind the scenes—plays a vital role in the production's success. The discussion touches on the many ways community members can get involved, from acting and directing to set design, lighting, and costumes. This inclusive spirit not only strengthens the theater but also fosters lasting friendships and personal growth. Rehearsals: Where Magic Happens As the team delves into the rehearsal process, they reveal the meticulous planning and adaptability required to bring "Wait Until Dark" to life. Joette describes her approach to blocking scenes, managing a diverse cast, and ensuring safety during the play's more physical moments. The actors share memorable rehearsal stories, from mastering fight choreography to overcoming stage fright. These behind-the-scenes anecdotes underscore the dedication and resilience that community theater demands. Inspiring the Next Generation Looking ahead, the conversation turns to the future of local theater. Avery offers heartfelt advice to aspiring actors, encouraging them to take risks and embrace every opportunity, regardless of the outcome. Joette echoes this sentiment, urging newcomers to get involved in any capacity and reminding listeners that every contribution matters. In the heart of Old Town Winchester, Winchester Little Theatre (WLT) buzzes with anticipation as the cast and crew prepare for their much-loved production of "A Christmas Carol." In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael sits down with director Sara Gomez, cast members Robert Delancey (Scrooge) and Jonathan Ryall (Bob Cratchit), and board member Tim Bambara to uncover the magic, challenges, and community spirit that bring this holiday classic to life. A Theater with Heart and History From the outset, it's clear that WLT is more than just a venue—it's a vibrant community hub. Tim, who first joined the theater three years ago, describes his journey from newcomer to board member, emphasizing the welcoming nature and high standards of the theater. “We operate with professional theater standards,” he notes, “but it's all community-driven.” Director Sara Gomez, a veteran with over 30 productions at WLT, highlights the unique challenges of staging a large-scale musical in an intimate space. She explains how the theater's size demands attention to detail, from period-accurate costumes to creative set design. “The audience is right there,” she says, “so we have to be meticulous.” Casting, Community, and Commitment The conversation shifts to the cast's experiences. Both Robert Delancey and Jonathan Ryall are reprising their roles from the previous production of "A Christmas Carol," bringing continuity and depth to their characters. Robert shares his approach to playing Scrooge, balancing tradition with personal flair, while Jonathan reflects on the joy of returning to the stage after a long hiatus, encouraged by his daughter's involvement in the theater's youth program. Open auditions and a diverse repertoire ensure that new faces are always welcome at WLT. Sara describes the thrill of seeing first-time actors blossom, regardless of their background. The theater's commitment to youth is evident in its robust kids' program, which offers both musicals and straight plays each summer, nurturing the next generation of performers. Behind the Scenes: The Art of Live Theater Transitioning from the spotlight to backstage, the cast reveals the logistical feats required to stage such a production. With a cast of 26 and limited space, every prop and costume change is choreographed to perfection. Jonathan, who chairs the set build, recounts how a single table dictated the entire set layout, underscoring the ingenuity required in community theater. Moreover, the actors discuss the unpredictability and excitement of live performance. Mistakes happen, but trust and camaraderie among the cast ensure that the show always goes on. “It's like playing sports,” Tim observes. “You trust your team to pick up the ball if something goes wrong.” Engaging the Audience—On and Off Stage WLT's intimate setting blurs the line between audience and performer. The cast delights in post-show interactions, whether it's chatting in the lobby or being recognized around town. For many, these moments of connection are as rewarding as the applause. The theater's website and social media channels keep the community informed about upcoming shows, auditions, and volunteer opportunities. As a nonprofit, WLT relies on donations and the dedication of its volunteers to sustain its mission. Looking Ahead As the curtain rises on another season, the cast and crew of Winchester Little Theater invite everyone to experience the magic of "A Christmas Carol." With a blend of tradition, innovation, and heartfelt community spirit, WLT continues to prove that local theater is alive and thriving in Winchester. More than half of U.S. film executives polled in a recent survey said they believe the "traditional cinema experience" has fewer than 20 years remaining as a viable business model. The episode encapsulates a riveting examination of the 1994 film Street Fighter, a cinematic endeavor that has sparked both fervent debate and nostalgic reminiscence within the gaming and film communities. As the podcastronauts, joined by Mr. Ray of the Actual Play podcast 2 Dollar Creature Feature (https://2dollarcreature.carrd.co/), dissect the film's production backstory, uncovering a wealth of anecdotes that shed light on the tumultuous conditions under which the film was created. With Raul Julia's final performance as M. Bison serving as a poignant centerpiece, the discussion navigates through the film's reception, its peculiar narrative choices, and the juxtaposition of laughter and frustration it elicits from audiences. The speakers reflect on the film's campy nature, celebrating its unintentional humor while also scrutinizing its shortcomings in faithfully representing the beloved characters from the game. This thoughtful analysis not only pays homage to the film but also invites listeners to contemplate the broader implications of adaptations in the realm of entertainment.Check out Anomaly on Social Media!www.anomalyfilmfest.comBluesky: @anomalyfilmfestInstagram: @anomalyfilmfestFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/AnomalyFilmFest/Join us for the Anomaly Film Festival November 5-9, 2025 at the Little Theatre in Rochester NY!Mentioned in this episode:Joe Bean Coffee - Coffee that lifts everyone.Use promo code Lunchador for 15% off your order! https://shop.joebeanroasters.comSweet Pea Plant Based KitchenBased in Rochester, NY @sweetpeaplantbased is a plant-powered kitchen creating transformative ways of wellness.
