“Do you like the wild beast-man Krampus? Do you like the giant Yule Cat of Iceland?  The deep of midwinter invites you to settle down by the fire with a seasonal beverage and this darkly folky oracle deck.” Then do we have an oracle deck for you! The Yultide Monsters Oracle by Madame Onca O'Leary. Joining me on this episode is the amazing and superbly talented Madame Onca.  Madame Onca is an artist, writer, and entertainer. She is co-author of the World Spirit Tarot (a RWS-style deck with a focus on inclusivity and empowerment), the Yuletide Monsters Advent Calendar, and other products associated with the world of Krampus.  For the winter season this year, Madame Onca has created the Yuletide Monsters Oracle for Yule-tide/Krampus season. It is currently a Kickstarter project (open until Oct 22, 2023) which is FULLY funded and ready to print.  After Oct. 22, the deck can be ordered at Madame Onca Studios on Etsy. Find out a lot of background about the characters, how the deck works, how the art was created, and more.  An interesting discussion about a really cool deck.  Find Madame Onca on Facebook and Instagram: @madamonca Website: https://theworldspirittarot.com/ For information on the Folly Cove Designers, internet search the term. Today marks the 250th episode for the podcast! Thank you for your patronage to the podcast. Today, we read the story “A Landslide in the Cut.” This story comes to us from the book “The Steam-Shovel Man” and was written by Ralph D. Paine. This topic suggestion came from John in which he referenced the book “Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel,” a book written by Virginia Lee Burton in 1939. I don't know if he read this book recently or not, as we have a copy at home, but I have fond memories of reading that book when I was a kid so a story about steam shovels I will do.   Where you from...What book(s) are you reading? Ramona's not the only one calling aspects of Mike Mulligan into question anymore. Kate and Betsy already tackled Virginia Lee Burton's The Little House, so now the two cover another story of the fast moving world and how it leads to obsolescence. In this tale of "a man obsessed with his steam shovel," they discuss muffs, dabbing, how precisely a steam shovel would work, and the weird placement of the acknowledgement to Dickie Birkinbush mid-book. As we mentioned, Kate and Betsy made a Randolph Caldecott music video about 10 years ago. That second pair of heels? That's Kate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMIjWQQavcY And here is Kate's Kei$ha video. She's one of the mohawked ladies walking behind the singer lady: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXvmSaE0JXA Kate looked up what a "selectman" is. It is, "a member of the local government board of a New England town." Who knew? Kaytee is recording with a special guest co-host this week, Anna Hithersay of The Post Party podcast. Anna is a homeschool mom and was a librarian in a former life, so I think you’ll love our deep dive into choosing great books for your kids (and yourself) at the library. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of the us: a bookish tattoo and a raising readers moment. Next, we discuss our current reads. This week has some thriller, some fairy tale, some romance, some middle grade. Basically, we took quite a few left turns. Our deep dive this week is a conversation with Anna about choosing quality books from the library when the selection is so overwhelming. We also talk about “twaddle” and authors that are sure bets. As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands. A sweeping story of the South and a tiny classic that’s sweet and lovely. Things get off to a bang when Kate immediately throws Betsy off by calling the entire Harry Potter series "YA". After that things get weird. Sure, Goodnight Moon is one of the best known, best loved, most-received-at-baby-showers picture book classics of all time, but does it deserve the acclaim? The sisters discuss its sordid controversies, the book's forgotten ghost, and the danger of anatomically correct udders. Just prior to writing The Little House, Burton actually attempted to write a book that can only be described as far and away ahead of her time. In the late 30s, early 40s she noticed that her nine-year-old son loved his comic books. The answer? Calico the Wonder Horse; or, The Saga of Stewy Slinker was an honest-to-goodness picture book in a comic-book format. As Minders of Make-Believe puts it, the book was a “gallant though futile gesture.” The Little House was made soon thereafter and got itself a Caldecott Medal in 1943, so there you go. - Here's a link to the Children's Books Made Horrific take on Goodnight Moon (you'll see why we didn't read it aloud). http://the-toast.net/2015/05/14/childrens-stories-made-horrific-goodnight-moon/ - By the way, want to hear some proof that children's books have a weird relationship to cow udders?
