Pull up a chair. It's 1951. The linen is crisp, the coffee is strong, and you and I have nowhere to be for at least an hour. This episode is inspired by Part 3 of The Misadventures of Madame J: Chortler on a Train, and three things it made me think about for all of us. Three stylish missions this week: Eat one meal alone. Unhurried. No phone. Order exactly what you want. Slow down for five minutes and pay attention to your surroundings. Notice the stylish clues hiding in plain sight. Write down the rules you've been living by and ask yourself. Which ones are actually serving you? There's also a stylish clue hidden in Part 3. Did you catch it? Come tell me in the comments on Substack. Read Part 3 at: maisongaton.substack.com Connect: Instagram @judithgaton | Substack for weekly essays

Today's Lang Fairy Tale is another Madame d'Aulnoy spectacular, The Golden Branch! So spectacular is this tale, in fact, that it was adapted for the stage as part of James Robinson Planche's 19th century 'fairy extravaganzas', lavishly costumed musical displays of whimsy which must truly have been a joy to behold. But will this be the decider for Martin for or against Madame d'Aulnoy? We discuss the tale, compare it to the other French literary fairy tales we've encountered as part of this project, and explore its subtext. We hope you enjoy the story and the episode, and we will be back on Saturday with another double bill of tales: Dapplegrim, and The Twelve Brothers! If you are unfamiliar with the Lang Fairy Tales, these seminal collections were assembled between 1889 and 1913 by a married couple, folklorists and translators Nora and Andrew Lang, with most of the work done to compile them completed by Nora, also known as Leonora Blanche Alleyne.Assembled and published in 12 colour-coded "Fairy Books," the corpus the Langs put together included 798 fairy tales from across cultures, many of which had never before been translated into English. They were amongst the most influential books of their time, changing the course of children's literature - although they're hardly just for children, and often deal with quite challenging concepts.Today, purchasing a complete set of the Lang Fairy Books in good condition costs over £4,000 ($5,000+).Thankfully, the collections are all out of copyright, meaning that we can now tell these stories, in podcast form, many for the first time, and share them with a global audience, for free. Our plan is to release the stories between main series of Three Ravens, performing them straight (though with plenty of silly voices) letting the tales speak for themselves in all their madcap, sharp-edged, often quite bizarre glory. The only edits we have made are to amend some culturally-insensitive epithets, which typically pertain to ethnicity, with any such edits made by Eleanor Conlon.Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?REGISTER FOR THE TALES OF SOUTHERN ENGLAND TOURVisit our website Join our Patreon Social media channels and sponsors Hosted on Acast.

652. Silent Legacies: How Enlightenment Philosophers Faced Mortality with Joanna Stalnaker

Joanna Stalnaker is a professor of French at Columbia University and also the author of the books The Rest Is Silence: Enlightenment Philosophers Facing Death and The Unfinished Enlightenment: Description in the Age of the Encyclopedia. Greg and Joanna discuss how Enlightenment figures faced death amid disbelief or tempered religious belief. Joanna says scholars have emphasized 18th-century death rituals more than philosophers' personal end-of-life writings, and she links her interest to growing up with atheist philosopher parents to her earlier work on Enlightenment description, and Rousseau's late writings.  Their conversation covers models like Socrates and Montaigne's, public scrutiny of deaths, last rites, and burial, and tensions between posterity and accepting oblivion. They discuss Hume's death and ambivalence about his reception, Diderot's Seneca-inspired reflections and critique of Rousseau's self-presentation, Voltaire's editing of Meslier and correspondence with Madame du Deffand, Buffon's gradual “ossification” view of dying, salons and letters' role in Enlightenment networks and women's participation, posthumous publication, and the value of literary form for understanding embodied philosophy and equanimity toward death. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.* Episode Quotes: On publishing a book against transhumanism 07:19: I published the book [The Rest Is Silence] that, in a certain sense, it's kind of a book against transhumanism or all these attempts to sort of survive, whether it be through technology or whether it be through spreading one's genetic material by having as many babies as possible. There's this—I see, in our current moment, a kind of denial of death through those various phenomena. Sorates is a model of enlightened death  04:53: Socrates is a model in terms of how to die, what one might call an enlightened death; how to die a philosophical death; and how to face death in a courageous manner, in keeping with one's philosophy. And that was a preoccupation for both David Hume and Voltaire. They were very aware that the public was watching their deaths and that there was great interest in how they would die and whether they would recant their beliefs on their deathbeds. They were thinking back to this model of Socrates, I believe. Can you separate philosophy from the way it is written? 39:04: One of the things that I want to insist on in my work is the fact that we need to take literary form and genre and style into account because it's very difficult. The philosophical ideas cannot be extracted from their form, and I, in this particular book  [The Rest Is Silence], was interested in the question of embodiment because my book is really about them attempting, acknowledging their coming deaths but acknowledging that they lived as bodies, as mortal bodies, and attempting to find a way to express that in writing. When the Guardian drops a list of the 100 Greatest Novels in English it's time to drop everything to talk about it. Luckily pod-regular guest, journalist Phil Chaffee and Joseph Dance, host of the Curious Readers podcast, also had views, and were willing to get together on a Sunday evening to share them. You'll hear our hits, our misses, how many we've read, whether we should have read more and much musing on whether a list like this is the way to get people excited about reading. We explore the joys of the sub-lists – the contributor lists – all squirrelled away on a sub-section of the Guardian's website, that arguably provide more excitement and inspiration than the fairly canonical top 100. Which is the best Brontë? Which is the best Austen? Do we age into certain books? If you've read all seven volumes of Proust shouldn't that count for more than one entry? All this and much, much more. Enjoy – this was an absolute delight to make and I hope it makes you smile as much as it did me.Have your say: get in touch on Instagram @bookclubreviewpodcast or email thebookclubreview@gmail.com, or head to our website for full shownotes. Two more tales from the Langs' Red Fairy Book in this episode: The Little Good Mouse and The Three Princesses of Whiteland. The Little Good Mouse is a Madame d'Aulnoy literary fairy tale with questionable morals, dreadful kings and...turkeys? The Three Princesses of Whiteland, on the other hand, is a Norwegian story collected by Asbjornsen and Moe. Its themes are quite familiar from previous tales like Soria Moria Castle and of course East of the Sun and West of the Moon, but it has some pretty original elements too.Afterwards, we discuss and rate the stories, question curious plot twists and inexplicable happenings, and generally appreciate two lesser known entries in the fairy tale canon. We really hope that you enjoy them, and we will speak to you again on Saturday for A Very British Chat with the wonderful David Crowther!

Travels With the Dark: Stories from humans in the “Limit-Experience” is our series concerning real occurrences of human beings when they are brought into or more aptly, up against “limit-experience”, a phrase from French and German philosophers that attempts to describe in the most general way what human beings undergo when they are thrust into situations that push them to their limits and conditions of maximum intensity. While originally this was intended to be a series in the “True Crime” genre  I wondered to myself if subject and theme could extended outward. It might not even only encompass the most negative aspect of human experience.I think the genesis of this two part topic was probably my first viewing of the David Fincher series Mindhunter which is a dramatization and representation of the work of Ann Burgess and John Douglas as they tried to investigate and comprehend the phenomenon of serial killers in our society. This lead me to decide to do an episode on serial murder itself. The preparation for these episodes was for me immense, perhaps greater than any episode I have created on this podcast. It involved multiple sources and books and many cases often of a most unpleasant nature and involved reintroduction to some rather famous cases like Ted Bundy, Rodney Alcala and John Wayne Gacey. Sometimes episodes on our podcast are the invention of others and I think our producer Laurie Strickland was the person who brought up this particular idea. Serial crime is such an outsized topic: for example in one relatively small country alone, France, the discussion of the crimes there comprised an entire episode. In this episode, Mitch and Deb head across the Atlantic and into some of the darkest corners of serial-killer history to unpack three cases that, outside of France and Belgium, rarely get the attention they warrant. Drawing on more than a decade of living in France and going down the rabbit hole of its true-crime archives, Deb brings a perspective shaped by immersion— the kind that only comes from reading between the lines of a country's own media, myths, and collective memory.Starting with Henri Landru, France's very own Bluebeard, a polite, almost forgettable man who turned lonely wartime classifieds into a hunting ground, Mitch and Deb dig into how scarcity, social upheaval, and the chaos of World War I created the perfect backdrop for a predator who didn't look like one, and how Landru managed to make women disappear so thoroughly that even now, the details feel more like rumor than record. From there, things take an even darker turn with Marc Dutroux, a case that still haunts Belgium and shook public trust to its core. Deb and Mitch walk through some of the systemic failures that allowed Dutroux's unimaginable crimes to go on for so long. Finally, they dive into Guy Georges, the Beast of the Bastille, whose reign of terror in 1990s Paris exposed both the limits of early forensic policing and the danger of underestimating someone hiding in plain sight. They discuss how Georges evaded capture for years, the role of emerging DNA technology in finally stopping him, and how fear rippled through a city most often associated with romance, glamour, and dreams. As always, Mitch and Deb go beyond the headlines and into the psychology, the social context, and the uncomfortable truths that lie just beneath the surface. These aren't just stories about killers. They're about the environments that shape them, the blind spots that protect them, and the uneasy realization that evil doesn't always look the way we expect. For Deb and Mitch, true crime isn't about spectacle. It's about understanding how people slip through cracks, how systems fail, and how, if you look closely enough, the warning signs are almost always there from the start.#truecrime #travelswiththedark #aesthetics

Our Lang Fairy Tale for today is another Madame d'Aulnoy story, Princess Rosette. Also known in some places as The King of the Peacocks or The Black and the White Bride, it's packed full of whimsy, but what is it actually about? We get lists of fun foods and wonderful creatures, sojourn with side characters with nothing to do, and end up with a kind of take on The Goose Girl.Considering d'Aulnoy is most known for writing fairy tales for adults, and coined the term 'Fairy Tale' in the first place, perhaps she knew better what ought to go into one. Then again, should you lock your children up in towers for all their lives? Or impulsively decide to marry a ruler of birds? Also, what the heck is a cockchafer?!If you are unfamiliar with the Lang Fairy Tales, these seminal collections were assembled between 1889 and 1913 by a married couple, folklorists and translators Nora and Andrew Lang, with most of the work done to compile them completed by Nora, also known as Leonora Blanche Alleyne.Assembled and published in 12 colour-coded "Fairy Books," the corpus the Langs put together included 798 fairy tales from across cultures, many of which had never before been translated into English. Meet Madame Vesta La Viesta, a trailblazing mystic and self-proclaimed astral traveler who fascinated early 20th-century New York City with her cosmic adventures and spiritual teachings. As a star instructor at Harlem's Occult School of Science, she claimed her spirit could leave her body and explore distant planets. Her otherworldly encounters included extraterrestrial beings, soul-mated couples, and the intimate phenomenon she called the “soul kiss.” Madame Viesta also promoted some unusual beauty rituals, played an unexpected role in the search for a missing plane, and documented her astral revelations in her book People of Other Worlds. Was she a visionary tapping into something beyond our reality, or a master storyteller spinning cosmic mysteries for a curious audience? Watch the video version here. Have ghost stories of your own?
