The Lost Boys, from the Peter Pan stories, are portrayed in some films to have odd names like 'don't ask' and 'too small'. In Hook, especially, one Lost Boy named 'thud butt' explains his happy thought is his mother. They all seem to portray their happy thoughts as actual memories that seem faded. Isn't it interesting to realise that its that 'happy thought' that can give you the ability to fly away, is really like a fractured memory, and thus they are lost, between worlds, between never growing up and never really remembering.

In March 2015, Fiona Lu showed up at her son Mike Zhao-Beckenridge's school to pick him up, only to find he was missing. Panicked, she called the police, convinced that her ex-husband John Beckenridge, whom Mike adored, had taken him. By the time the authorities stepped in, John and Mike were already on the run. Days later, John's car was discovered at the bottom of a cliff, but there was no sign of either of them. Journalist Michael Wright, co-host of The Lost Boy podcast, explores two possibilities: either Mike and John died in March 2015, or they're still alive today. At the age of 11 in 1985, Salva Dut was separated from his family by the Sudanese civil war. After a decade moving between different refugee camps, and presumed an orphan, Salva was recommended for resettlement in the United States as part of a UN-backed programme to support some 4,000 so-called 'lost boys' who'd been displaced by conflict. Salva settled with a host family in Rochester, New York. But when he was in his late 20s, he found out that his father was in fact still alive. Salva travelled back to Sudan to find him. His father was in a clinic and sick with a waterborne disease. Salva decided to try to bring clean water to his home village. A few years later, he established an NGO, Water for South Sudan, and he returned to his birthplace to drill his first well. Salva Dut is one of Sudan's so-called 'Lost Boys.' Separated from his family at the age of 11 when the civil war reached his village in 1985, Salva walked for weeks to reach safety in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. There, he lived out most of his teenage years, amongst thousands of other orphans. Like most of them, Salva had no idea what had happened to his family. With little adult supervision, the boys developed their own systems of organisation. That was to prove vital when in 1991 they were driven from the camp by a new conflict. Salva was 17 by this point, and he'd become a leader amongst the boys. In total there were 17,000 of them. They set off in groups, first back towards Sudan, then south, towards Kenya. When they emerged from the wilderness after many months, aid workers were astonished to find them still alive. They shared their story with the world. The United Nations recommended almost 4,000 of the Lost Boys for resettlement in the US, and Salva's name was among them. By this point, in his early 20s, Salva had been separated from his family for a decade. A reunion seemed impossible. He would be boarding a flight and leaving the continent of his birth behind. The second part of Salva's story will be broadcast on the next edition of Lives Less OrdinaryPresenter: Mobeen Azhar Producer: Jo ImpeyGet in touch: liveslessordinary@bbc.co.uk or WhatsApp: 0044 330 678 2784

Episode 172: Simple Minds – New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) (1982) - Part 4 In the Northern Hemisphere, it's now officially summertime, and it's also time for Brian and Sarah to wrap up their discussion of the 1982 album from Simple Minds, New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84).  Our hosts find themselves with three more songs on the album to cover, one of which is a single with a video, so there's no shortage of things to talk about with that song. But even the last two tracks on the album generate a lot of discussion from Brian and Sarah.  During the course of the song discussion, a wide variety of topics are brought up, such as: the first Earl of Birkenhead; the perfect setting to kill Green Lantern; the answer to the question “can being completely covered in gold paint kill a person?”; the world's worst museum; a cassette-zine; and the Camp David Peace Accords of 1978. After Brian and Sarah finish discussing the album tracks, it's time for the Extra Credit section. The featured topic is Jim Kerr's side project from 2010: Lostboy! AKA Jim Kerr. Then, to further delay the long-awaited final reviews and ratings of the album, there's a special and exciting announcement from Sarah! Finally, the time comes for Brian and Sarah to deliver their thoughts on the album and their record-adapter ratings. How will this 1982 album—which many consider to be Simple Minds' best work—rank in the eyes of our hosts? All is revealed at the end! We were saddened to learn of Paul Auster's passing on April 30, at the age of 77. In his memory, revisit this interview, which originally ran on November 5, 2021, on the late author's favorite writer: Stephen Crane. Exploding the Canon will return next week. In his decades-long career, the writer Paul Auster has turned his hand to poems, essays, plays, novels, translations, screenplays, memoirs—and now biography. Burning Boy explores the life and work of Stephen Crane, whose short time on earth sputtered out at age 28 from tuberculosis. Like his biographer, Crane, too, spanned genres—poetry, novels, short stories, war reporting, and semi-fictional newspaper “sketches”—striking it big in 1895 with The Red Badge of Courage, which was widely celebrated at the time and is still regarded as his best work. But in Auster's estimation, the rest of Crane's output (and there is a surprising amount of it) is sorely neglected, and the pleasure of Burning Boy lies in reading one of the 19th century's finest writers alongside one of today's. Paul Auster joins the podcast to talk about the task of restoring Stephen Crane to the American canon.Go beyond the episode:Paul Auster's Burning BoyRead Steven G. In this episode, we take a closer look at two of the investigators' suspects: Steve Schafer and John Gilbreath. Witnesses told authorities that Schafer was the leader of a local Satanic group whose members included Shane and Sally, though Schafer says he was never part of the group. Gilbreath is the man who, in 2017, was found to have suspicious evidence in his home, including a lock of hair, a fingernail, and notes about Shane and Sally's murders. While authorities have since found that the DNA from this evidence doesn't match Shane or Sally, Sheriff Nick Hanna says Gilbreath's behavior after the murders—repeatedly claiming to know details about the killings—still arouses suspicion.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Griff. Griff is a U.K. singer-songwriter who cites Jack Antonoff, Imogen Heap, and James Blake as influences. She played only one show supporting her 2019 EP, Mirror Talk, then created the 2021 LP One Foot In Front of The Other in her bedroom during pandemic lockdowns, which shot her to fame. Now, she's readying the release of her latest single, “miss me too,” which was written in between tours. “I booked a little Airbnb and sent my location to Lostboy and Siba, who I co-wrote ‘Black Hole' with,” she says. “We converted the living room of the cottage into a studio and wrote ‘miss me too.' I had been trying to write a song for a while about losing yourself, and missing a past version of yourself that wasn't so broken.” Listen to their conversation on Artist Friendly wherever you listen to podcasts.
