It's two years until the next Winter Olympics at Milan-Cortina in 2026, so we are in a winter sports mood! Milan-Cortina's slidingnovela (where the sliding events will take place) has us curious about bobsled, so Australian bobsledder (bobsleigher?) Breeana Walker joins us to talk monobob. Bree competed at Beijing 2022 in both the two-woman and the monobob, placing 16th and 5th respectively. We've wanted to talk about monobob for a while, and Bree sheds some light on the sport for us, including body weight differences between the two events, why you need different sets of runners, and why they call it the lonely sport. Plus, we get into the costs of sleds and runners--you'll be shocked at how much they can cost. Follow Bree on social @bobsledbree, and check out her YouTube channel and website. Because it's two years until the next Winter Games, there is a bunch of news from Milan-Cortina, not all of it rosy.  The good news: The NHL is back in the Olympics! They've come to an agreement to have pro players compete at 2026 and 2030, and we are here for it! The not-so-good news: The sliding track is one construction project we've been focused on, but there are more construction issues happening that could affect other sports and where some athletes sleep. In Paris 2024 news, French police are investigating the way Paris 2024 CEO Tony Estanguet is paid and whether that is skirting French law in the wrong way. Final spectator numbers for the Opening Ceremony have been announced--and they're quite a bit lower than originally planned. Pride House is looking for volunteers, both in-person and remotely. Find more information here. Tickets for Team NL house are on sale--and it's a pretty good deal! Find them here. Tom's guests on this encore edition of Midday are two authors who have new books — and a special bond. Ann Patchett is the best-selling author of nine novels, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and a recipient of the National Humanities Medal. Her new book, published this past August, is called Tom Lake. Her protagonist is an actress who ultimately lands in a different line of work. It's a tender, warm, and wise, meditation on love and family and memory and the stories that shape us. Lindsay Lynch is a first-time novelist whose debut offering is masterfully shaped. It's a gripping narrative set largely in the pre-war years of Hollywood. It follows the long career trajectory of its protagonist, an actress who, like Ann's central character, also finds a second act, which includes encounters with a sweeping panoply of movie stars and wannabees. It's called Do Tell.  Ann and Lindsay are colleagues at Parnassus Books, the independent bookstore Ann owns in Nashville, Tennessee. Ann's book is one of the most highly anticipated books of the year. For some time now, any book by Ann Patchett will automatically be highly anticipated. Lindsay's book is one of any number of debuts hoping for a little attention, a little buzz, a little shelf space. Two excellent books by two gifted authors who are at two very different places in their writing lives. We begin with Ann Patchett. Lindsay Lynch joins the conversation later in the program. Both connect with us on Zoom from Nashville… Because today's program is pre-recorded, we won't be taking any calls or emails.Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

This week I'm rejoined by Jason Pargin to discuss his new novel, Zoey Is Too Drunk for This Dystopia, and the ways in which the futuristic panopticon he envisions for Zoey and the other citizens of Tabula Ra$a is a little like now, but moreso. We talk for a bit about how book marketing has evolved over the last decade-plus, why TikTok became a must for novelists like himself, and why despite the word “dystopia” being in the title of the book, he doesn't necessarily think of his vision of the near future as a downer.  Unpaid endorsement: I really enjoy Jason's novels (he is also the author of the John Dies at the End series), and the Zoey Ashe books (the first two of which are available on Kindle Unlimited) are pretty compulsively readable, a pleasing melange of ideas and imagery and just enough suspense from moment to moment to activate the “okay, just one more chapter” portion of my brain. Zoey Is Too Drunk for This Dystopia is understandable if you've not read the other books in the series, but you can't go wrong by picking up copies of the previous entries. And if you want a signed copy of his latest, you can get one from Parnassus Books in Nashville, but you have to order by Monday.

Eric Thomas (Congratulations, the Best is Over!) about Ann Patchett, The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, Parnassus Books owned by Ann Patchett, and some other things entirely unrelated to Ann Patchett such as the sequel to the best pickleball movie, what Charles Dickens might've talked about over brunch, and so much more. This episode also features special guest Hunter McLendon (aka shelfbyshelf on Instagram) who joins Jason and Brett to discuss some of his favorite essay collections. R. Eric Thomas is the bestselling author of Here for It: Or, How to Save Your Soul in America, a Lambda Literary Award finalist; and the YA novel Kings of B'more, a Stonewall Honor book. Both books were also featured as Read with Jenna book club picks on Today. He is also a television writer (Apple TV+'s Dickinson, FX's Better Things), a Lambda Literary Award–winning playwright, and the long-running host of the Moth in Philadelphia. For four years, Thomas was a senior staff writer at Elle online, where he wrote the popular “Eric Reads the News” column. @oureric**BOOKS!** Check out the list of books discussed on each episode on our Bookshop page:https://bookshop.org/shop/gaysreading | By purchasing books through this Bookshop link, you can support both Gays Reading and an independent bookstore of your choice!Join our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! PATCHETT PUBLISHES!! That should be big news in the literary world. Ann Patchett has a new book out as of August 1st.  Tom Lake is the title - a novel influenced by COVID as three daughters come home to be with their mother during the pandemic. What do they want to talk about? Her past. And she has a past - having had a romance with a man who went on to become a famous actor. How much do you tell your kids? “I want them to think I was better than I was, and I want to tell them the truth…those two desires do not neatly co-exist.” Ann Patchett is a wonderful writer - one of America's best! She's also a wonderful and amusing talker! And she owns an independent bookstore - Parnassus Books in Nashville. That makes her a perfect guest, we think, for The Book Case. Books mentioned in the podcast: Tom Lake by Ann Patchett The Magician's Assistant by Ann Patchett The Dutch House by Ann Patchett Commonwealth by Ann Patchett These Precious Days by Ann Patchett Bel Canto by Ann Patchett State of Wonder by Ann Patchett Run by Ann Patchett Truth & Beauty: A Friendship by Ann Patchett This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett The Patron Saint of Liars by Ann Patchett The Getaway Car: A Practical Memoir about Writing and Life by Ann Patchett Our Town by Thornton Wilder Absolution by Alice McDermott Do Tell by Lindsay Lynch Learn more about your ad choices. Tom's guests today are two authors who have new books — and a special bond. Ann Patchett is the best-selling author of nine novels, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and a recipient of the National Humanities Medal. Her new book, which will be released tomorrow, is called Tom Lake. Both connect with us on Zoom from Nashville…Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

(As the former executive editor of Cracked dot com, Jason has some experience with this.) Oh, we also talk about his new novel—If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe, out October 18—and why you don't need to read the three previous books in the series to enjoy it. That said: I would recommend reading them! The first, John Dies at the End, is probably the easiest to skip since you can get the basics by watching the movie (streaming now on Hulu) but basics are, well, basic, and you don't want to be Basic, now do you? (You can buy a new copy here and a used copy here). The second, This Book Is Full of Spiders, is my favorite of them, a deft deconstruction of the late-2000s-to-mid-2010s wave of zombie movies, shows, and video games. (New here, used here.) What the Hell Did I Just Read is perhaps the funniest book about depression I've ever read. (New here, used here.) Fave return guest alert! We talked to Mary Laura Philpott in episode 71–#YouandYourBookstore, back when she was a Parnassus Books guru. And then in Episode 150: #NeverReady, when MLP (as we like to call her) launched her first book of essays, I Miss You When I Blink, into the world—and then again, for episode 163 #BookTourReality. And now she’s back with a new book of essays: Bomb Shelter: Love, Time and other Explosives. (Read an excerpt here. And here. And then go order the book here.) The difference? Blink was, as MLP says, a book of essays that, together, became a memoir. Bomb Shelter is a memoir that took on the form of a book of essays—essays that went deeper than those shared in Bomb Shelter, that cut so much closer to the heart and were so much harder to write, and to share. If you’ve been listening for a while, you know I spent five years as an editor with The New York Times—but I still had a lot to learn about helping writers through the process of taking a book from idea to manuscript, and I loved learning it with the Author Accelerator team. What they taught me has changed my approach to editing completely. I didn’t just learn how to help a writer move from one stage of the process to the next—I learned how to help them appreciate how far they’ve come and feel excited about what’s coming next, see their strengths and how they can build on them and trust me to guide them into the hard work that lies ahead. Their conversation spans from topics like their mothers' glamour, the origin story of Ann's bookstore, Parnassus Books, why writers often persevere for far longer than is to be expected in such an uncertain industry, and how this book answers the question, "What did Ann Patchett do during the pandemic?" Ann also answers questions from the event's audience about what genre she finds harder to write, what surprising lessons she's learned during her ten years as a bookseller, and where to find the coat from the title essay about her late friend, Sooki Raphael.Purchase on Amazon or Bookshop.Amazon: https://amzn.to/3cYHhkkBookshop: https://bit.ly/3rluNvq See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
